Indeed they are. Having the correct ph levels in your soil can make a world of difference. The red clay soil that can be found in some southern US states is naturally acidic.
I want to visit Japan so badly but I also feel like I’m just going to want to buy all the things and send them home. Between plants and sanrio I would be about ready to just rent a shipping container to send it all home
I don’t think you’d be able to bring plants home just at will while visiting, you’d have to work with someone who imports plants into your country. Between the phytosanitary certificates and them having to be shipped bare rooted, the process is several years long and really expensive
Not every country has the same rules and restrictive import policies we do. It wouldn't be as big a deal if they lived in Europe... But a container is a terrible idea.... Lol talk about dead on arrival if you don't know what you are doing lol.
If you are hell bound on importing and you are in Europe Lodder bonsai can likely help you out, as far as I know they are the biggest importer in Europe. But honestly just visit them with pockets full of cash because they already have thousands of Japanese import trees in their warehouse
I see how that they are show winners and such. There are a lot of very nice random market trees in Japan for low prices. I was more making a joke that they are certainly less than US. Prices not really stating an actual price.
I would have coffee or tea with this tree every day for a month for sure, the color and character the blossoms is "unique". That so few leaves can support such a show, and that base. everything just wins for me, not classic but "perfect"
I think the point is that you'd have to be a serious bonsai practitioner to even consider purchasing it, and for the seller to consider selling, bc these types of trees are decades-long investments and you don't want a n00b to just buy it for kicks. In which case, if you are a bonsai master, you should already know about how much it is worth.
Bonsai in Japan are much more reasonably priced because there’s so much material floating around in the market over there, but importing costs to other countries and mark ups mean that Japanese bonsai anywhere else are normally many times more expensive than if they were purchased locally.
No. 4 says ¥180,000 = £930 or $1160.00
Edit 5, 6 and 7 seem to be prize winners, they’ve got the club’s division and the selection (prize?) on it, and 7 seems to be a less prestigious selection or sth (sorry I read Japanese but I don’t understand exactly what they are talking about)
Last day of that flea market was the 15th. Sorry. But here’s a guide to all the flea markets in Tokyo coming up. https://fmfm.jp/event/?area_id=102&pref_id=13&startyear=2024&startmonth=5&startday=17&endyear=2024&endmonth=6&endday=16&shop-type=0&same-time-event=0&coupon=0&category=0&limit=20#monthUnk
It's in Ueno park(wich it's stunning by the way), close to the main entrance of the zoo, you can't miss it, it's a whole bunch of different shops. I hoped it's still gonna be there in a week, it was incredible. Yeah many tools available as well.
Market? It looks like an Azalea Expo x)
Yeah true, but it was actually in a market with many other shops around
Oh i see thanks 😭
My azaleas bloom out but not like this, maybe I need to fertilize more. I have some of these same cultivars but they don’t bloom out as nicely.
When I used to live in the Carolinas, I could get Azalea results like this.
They’re acid lovers, I’m gonna try Miracid next spring.
Indeed they are. Having the correct ph levels in your soil can make a world of difference. The red clay soil that can be found in some southern US states is naturally acidic.
It’s because of the pine needles.
We are missing one thing, we are not japanese 😅 it's one of those crafts that they just do better than most
Being integrated in bonsai culture must make learning easier!
This

Pots and tools though...
A million times easier haha

Right, Europe’s able to access the Japanese market a lot easier than us in the states & hey if you pack the pots well enough then it could work!

What about seeds? Ive been planning to get my friend in Japan to send seeds for herbs, plants, and maybe trees
There are ways....its not too kosher... but there are ways. I do not condone that activity, but...there are ways.
Yeah, like people from other countries with much less strict import laws buying up a ton of Japanese bonsai to resell to other countries
I meant as in american, buying and bringing them to America
Yeah I was so tempted to buy all kind of tools and pots, but no space in the luggage
Stunning
I bet they were all less than $100 USD.
I bet none of them are less than 100 usd
I see how that they are show winners and such. There are a lot of very nice random market trees in Japan for low prices. I was more making a joke that they are certainly less than US. Prices not really stating an actual price.
i know it's not the nicest one but that last one, I am in love with.
It was one of my favourite too!

that slab of burl as a base dosen't suck either
what would be the price for the one with the tickest trunk
I have no clue, I red somewhere that is bad manner to ask for prices of this kind of specimen so I didn't dare 😅
How do you buy it then just let them randomly run ur credit card?

Ahh good explanation!

I’d fix this my just moving permanently 😜 I would do it in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose.

Edit: I am not used to having to wear glasses. No 3 says 一万二千円 12,000 yen or about 90 USD.
??? No. 4 says 18万円 では?
Yes sorry. Need to put on glasses.
What a beaut!
These are amazing! Thanks for sharing
Props on the excellent photos 👍
Thanks!
Gorgeously beautiful
I really like 1 and 8
Those are great! What market did you take these at and were any tools sold as well? Will be in Tokyo next week

I want everyone of those…
Exactly that
Broooooooo😱
What’s the bonsai of the second picture? It just feels unreal
It's so weird, it's still an azalea with exposed roots, I love that style
oh the flowers 😍😍😍😍😍
Is #1 and #4 crab apple?
Where in Tokyo was this? I’m visiting in a couple weeks and would love to see some trees!
In ueno park, just behind the main station, close to the main entrance of the zoo, absolutely worth a visit even if you don't find the market.
Amazing thanks!
Gorgeous trees but I thought liverwort wasn’t good for bonsai?
spectacular! what a dream it would be to have grown one of these
They are stunning 😍
Uprooted plants = Bonsai 😁👌
It’s a style called exposed root. It captures something called Wabi-Sabi.
Yep. I like how they applied it to shrubs as well.
