Lots of Daphne in these comments. I just blew through Rebecca and My cousin Rachel. Maybe Jamaica Inn is next!

Tess of the D’Urbervilles

ComplainFactory

This is Thomas Hardy's vibe. Earlier stuff is happier endings. Later stuff is better though.

cozycthulu

From these pics I'd go with Far From the Madding Crowd

SaintPhebe

Came here to recommend this one.

Lmfaooliliana_

Okay wait!! Empty Theater is a beautifully written book based on the lives of the empress of Austria and her cousin Ludwig of Bavaria. The author paints a vivid picture of the despair, luxury and the complex lives they both lived. This book was one of the first that got me back into reading. It is a deeply emotional and funny story that truly has you feeling connected to the characters. I’ve been waiting to recommend this one!

Lmfaooliliana_

Also note that the two main characters experience tragedy in relationships separately^

SliceRevolutionary79

Ooh I may have to read this one!

Lmfaooliliana_

I really loved it !!

nosleepforthedreamer

Oh wow, finally a new recommendation!!

“The Moor”, Laurie R. King Honourable Mention: “the Secret Garden”, Frances Hodges Burnett (a young adult book yes, but I think it’s even better as an adult).

Obvious answer but anything by Jane Austen is precisely this vibe (typing this as I watch Pride & Prejudice 2005)

The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno Garcia

Electrical-Eye-2544

I think the Buccaneers by Edith Wharton gave me these vibes with romance a bit. It’s not as eerie as the Brontë sisters but it’s still kind of classically tragic I feel. People might disagree 😂
