Letter paper is in the imperial system. The A4 is kinda like the metric system, used all over the globe.
Letter paper is 8.5x11, 11x17 inches. A4 is in centimeters.
I can't wait for people to start complaining that everything is in km and kg instead of miles and lbs.
In any case, here's a [fun video about A4 paper](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUF5esTscZI) (and its derivative sizes) for anyone interested in why it's the international standard.
"Hey, what do you think, should we use Celsius like the whole international community, which uses as reference the pure water freezing and boiling points at sea level and 1atm?"
"Nah, let's keep the scale a dude invented in the 18th century by measuring a mystery brine solution."
Don't even get me started [with this fuckery](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/sketchup/original/3X/0/c/0cdb85235af6fac916e8392c4c9153dfd1fed8ae.jpeg).
It's US/Canada who are the outlier who use letter size. A4 is the international standard everywhere else.
You won't find letter size paper anywhere in Europe either. Nobody ever heard of it.

Letter size is the standard for the US, most of other places have as standard A4. That said, you can find all sorts of paper sizes in Brazil in stores. Most printers can also be adjusted to print in letter size.
It seems people commenting are fairly young... Us oldies are used to Letter (Carta) size and A4. Mostly A4 but Letter used to be a standard as well back in the day. I also remember using Papel Ofício a lot. It was 14 inches long (that's what she said).
there's A0 to A6 sizes

you can but in 'Grafica' or Art shops

i wanted to learn about A4 paper, not to have an existencial crysis
I can’t believe you all use celsius. Wtf

The examples shown by the link itself are A4 size, not US letter size. Edit: I'm wrong, misread the size.
8.5 in = 216 mm 11 in = 279 mm both brands available on this link are this size
You're right, my bad. I somehow misread it as 21x297. Funny how the digits are transposed.
Just... why?!

Stop complaining and just change your Word standard to A4.

Yeah, we don't use that American bullshit
I remember letter size in the 1990s… Then A4… Then almost no paper anymore.
Sure. Fanfold continuous sheets for dot matrix printers are commonly letter-sized.
It's simple. We don't use inches.
Yes we do... its called letter paper or Carta (letter in english).
Brazil does have letter sized paper. Larger stationery stores are most likely to sell it.

I'm an old person myself but I can't remember any situation that using "letter" size paper is vital.
I could be wrong, but those cute little stationery pieces used to be that size.
Yeah... 🤔 But I think it's time to let it go.
For me it was a mix, many places still used what was called Letter or Legal format, but it was changing fast for A4.

Is just you
There used to be "carta", don't know if it's the same size you describe
