Gemma Chan, Awkwafina and Lana Condor are unfortunately the only ones I recognize and how sad is that...speaks to how few East Asians there are in entertainment. But I could see Gemma playing a perfect Sophie, Plus shes British. But too fucking famous. I dont think one goes from Marvel to Bton.
Oh no no. I dont want this for her either. I dont want her to go from Marvel to Bton. I want her to get Oscar winning, Bafta winning work, critically acclaimed work, not small role in one season of Bton type work.
I dont want her career to be like Michelle Yeoh largely ignored and then success in middle age as seems to be the case for a lot of East Asian actors. Bton would definitely be a downgrade and I dont want that for her.
Yeah they are wasting this incredibly talented, Oxford and Drama Center educated actress's talent on roles like Shelly in Dont worry Darling. But thats Hollywood for ya. It goes for predictable in casting when it could go for unexpected.
HBO recently announced that they are making a Crazy Rich Asians tv series! There's rumors that it could focus on Astrid (Gemma's character) but of course those aren't confirmed.
I'm so excited for anything from that franchise though!
Also OMG, I completely missed Katie Leung...Shame on my Harry Potter street cred. She is sooo soooo cute. I loved her in HP. And pretty and Sophie like. Love. That poor girl went through the gauntlet with Cho Chang casting way back with bullying and shizz.. And also why do I think it is her...because she did an interview with a podcast just 2 days back discussing HP. Hmmm
Yeah Awkwafina doesnt fit the role. She has a particular style..its very very unique and specific like Adam Sandler or Arnold Schwerzanager or Jean Claude Van Damme or Jack Nicolson or Jennifer Aniston or Lisa Kudrow etc etc. They are specific actors. As is Awakwadina. She can be entertaining though and I have seen that range but Sophie and a British accent-nah!
Love Eva! I would consider her but wasn’t sure if she’s busy lately.

I’m Desi and I remember they said that they had a whole episode specifically on Inej’s background and her heritage and I immediately started mourning something I didnt know I wanted.
Apparently they had an episode focusing on each Crow specifically and I’m always going to be angry that we lost the show because it really was perfect casting

I don’t wanna burst any bubbles, but I don’t think they’re gonna go for actresses who don’t have somewhat British sounding accents. So no American or Korean actresses. They’re gonna try to pick someone with a British accent or something close to it. So I feel like a lot of actresses pictured aren’t gonna be Sophie.
There are a tonne of actors who do accents of their non-home country well. Renee Zellwegger as a brilliant Bridget Jones that even British people loved is just one example.
Agreed — that’s why I’m thinking it will probably be someone like Jessie Mei Lee. She’s already been in a Netflix show (Shadow and Bone) and she is English!
At first I was excited about this news but then I started wondering about how much screen time they’ll actually have. I wish that Sophie had been introduced earlier because they’ve been shortchanging the couples time together after S1. Now I’m worried they’ll speed through the Benophie romance and it’ll be like Polin where we wind up annoyed by how little time they spend together. No way they introduce Sophie in S4 and then extend the romance into S5. I really hope they listen to viewers complaints and give the couple more time together!!!
Well, yes, people will complain no matter what happens. But everyone complaining about Polin forgot about Kanthony so it's really a matter of perspective.
So many of these actresses are Americans and not British/English, lol, so why include them... The show has made it clear they're really only hiring Brits.
**Edit to Add:** And I don't think any of the three Korean actresses can speak English fluently enough at the moment to tackle on such a big project *and* put on a historically accurate English accent on top of it.

I think since she doesn’t speak it the accent would be easier to learn. But timing would be problematic however I don’t care much for Benedict and she would draw me back in if it were possible
Speaking English fluently is one thing, being able to put on a believable accent is a different thing. I am fluent in English, but since I am not from the US, I have an accent when I speak English from where I'm from. I try speaking with an American and/or British accent (which I love!) but it does not sound authentic at all 😂 I suppose one could get classes to speak in a certain accent but it takes time and on top of that in this case, she isn't even good in English, which means she also has to learn to speak English fluently in a very short amount of time.
I vote London Thor, she plays the female version of Jordan Li, a superhero that is bi-gender / fluid and can switch between being a boy or being a girl on Gen V - The spinoff series of the Boys.
I love the Korean actors you threw in this selection but I am assuming whoever is cast needs to be able to speak fluently in English with a British accent. For example, I don't think Sung Jung So-min's is fluent enough for this although I would love seeing her in this! She is my bias 😍 so is Lana Condor. And omg, Katie Leung! Yes please!
Jung So Min was great on Alchemy of Souls, however I am not sure I can imagine her in a British regency era drama. Especially next to Benedict of the show. But she's a great actress nonetheless, it was nice to see her name.

I would die if it was Kim Tae Ri but I doubt her image would fit Bridgerton. I love love love her but they are probably going to get a new & upcoming British actress of Asian descent instead of someone who is a big name in their respective countries.
I agree. As much as I would love to see a known actress, I have a feeling they will get someone new, which is fine as long as their face and acting fits the role. Although, I really wouldn't mind them choosing a somewhat known but haven't had many (big) roles opportunities yet even though they have been acting for a few years, if that makes sense?
Oh yeah makes sense! Many of the Bridgerton cast already have had various forms of acting experiences for a while like Nicola C. and Jonathan B. so they are most likely going to that route. Getting an actress with a pronounced British accent is probably going to be their top priority so that rules out may korean actresses like Tae Ri :(

Natasha Liu Bordizzo has always been my pick for an East Asian Sophie. Not sure if it could happen because she's Australian and they only seem to hire British actors, but if she could pull off the accent I'm sure she'd be an amazing fit for the role.
JESSIE JESSIE JESSIE she would be a perfect Sophie plus she's just so lovable as a person. Yk maybe we'll get Ben Barnes cameo since they're inseparable 😌
I am so desperate to know who has been cast for Sophie (since I think "emily" is sophie and I think by now she's probably cast) because we KNOW all the other main love interests. They've all been cast...now it's just Sophie left (outside of Gregory and Hyacinth but seasons seven and eight feel a long way away). I just want to know who she is, so I can picture all the love interests clearly in my head.
Plus, I am not south asian myself but I adore how this show celebrates racial diversity, so I can't wait to see who they cast in this role. I beyond excited.
There are some **great** selections I see here, but I'd be lying if I said I *kinda hope* they'd stick with casting those who are from UK, ~~and I say this as an American~~ (unless they're really good at doing an English accent ofc). Katie Leung would be cool since she's from Scotland, but I'd also love Jessie Mei Li, Jessica Henwick and Jemma Moore, who are British. Natasha Liu Bordizzo I know from the Netflix show The Society, although she's Australian, I wouldn't be opposed to her either. That may be biased of me though xD

I haven’t read the books, so I only have the vaguest idea who this character is, but I’d fricking love if Stephanie Hsu was cast and her character got to interact with Eloise. I think both actresses are hilarious and I’d love to see them play off each other.
I was super happy when I read the news about this. Finally, an East Asian character that has more than a few lines throughout the show! Can't wait to see who gets casted.
I would throw in Malese Jow into the mix but she looks too mixed (half Chinese and part Cherokee) so she might not be suitable for what they are looking for looks-wise.
My only hope is that she'll be full Asian instead of mixed. There are thousands of full Asian ladies who can speak English fluently; let's not choose a biracial Asian.
If they do cast Gemma (which I sadly don't think they will), I will forgive every monstrosity they've done to Bridgerton and will be hyping the new season up like never before lmao

I think Katie is a good choice because it could tie Francesca in Scotland with Benedict’s story.

she is not a good actress, she fits a very narrow niche playing her persona yes.

No, I don't think so! Phoebe was 24 when she filmed season one and if Minnie were cast, she'd be either 22 or 23 when filming, so basically the same.

Unrelated but if “Emily” is indeed Sophie, did they change Sophie’s name? Or is “Emily” the alias she’ll use?
Just an alias for casting calls. Once they get the part, they’ll reveal the real name. They did this for Michaela (Molly) and John (James).
Casting and filming rarely happens under public names. If they publicly say sophie, everybody and their mother will audition.

I would die if it was Kim Tae Ri but I doubt her image would fit Bridgerton. I love love love her but they are probably going to get a new & upcoming British actress of Asian descent instead of someone who is a big name in their respective countries.
I agree. As much as I would love to see a known actress, I have a feeling they will get someone new, which is fine as long as their face and acting fits the role. Although, I really wouldn't mind them choosing a somewhat known but haven't had many (big) roles opportunities yet even though they have been acting for a few years, if that makes sense?
Oh yeah makes sense! Many of the Bridgerton cast already have had various forms of acting experiences for a while like Nicola C. and Jonathan B. so they are most likely going to that route. Getting an actress with a pronounced British accent is probably going to be their top priority so that rules out may korean actresses like Tae Ri :(

Natasha Liu Bordizzo has always been my pick for an East Asian Sophie. Not sure if it could happen because she's Australian and they only seem to hire British actors, but if she could pull off the accent I'm sure she'd be an amazing fit for the role.

I am so desperate to know who has been cast for Sophie (since I think "emily" is sophie and I think by now she's probably cast) because we KNOW all the other main love interests. They've all been cast...now it's just Sophie left (outside of Gregory and Hyacinth but seasons seven and eight feel a long way away). I just want to know who she is, so I can picture all the love interests clearly in my head. Plus, I am not south asian myself but I adore how this show celebrates racial diversity, so I can't wait to see who they cast in this role. I beyond excited.
There are some **great** selections I see here, but I'd be lying if I said I *kinda hope* they'd stick with casting those who are from UK, ~~and I say this as an American~~ (unless they're really good at doing an English accent ofc). Katie Leung would be cool since she's from Scotland, but I'd also love Jessie Mei Li, Jessica Henwick and Jemma Moore, who are British. Natasha Liu Bordizzo I know from the Netflix show The Society, although she's Australian, I wouldn't be opposed to her either. That may be biased of me though xD

I haven’t read the books, so I only have the vaguest idea who this character is, but I’d fricking love if Stephanie Hsu was cast and her character got to interact with Eloise. I think both actresses are hilarious and I’d love to see them play off each other.

I would throw in Malese Jow into the mix but she looks too mixed (half Chinese and part Cherokee) so she might not be suitable for what they are looking for looks-wise.
