Certain types of trees attract flies, they actually act as pollinators. We have some Japanese tree lilacs on our block and they always have swarms of flies near the flowers. These are super common street trees, they might be what you’re experiencing. Once the flowering stage is over the flies will go away, it’s not forever :) If you go to the NYC tree map you will probably find exactly which types of trees are causing the fly party! https://tree-map.nycgovparks.org

TIL there's a tree map! Wish I had this when I was taking walks after lockdown.

galaxiids

I don’t know what’s up with some of these replies, but I think I know what you’re talking about specifically. I see them on a street I walk down every day. They’re small swarms of flies that look bigger than gnats, and I only see them underneath specific trees on that street. I thought it was interesting too because they’re always in the exact same spot every day. I figure it’s just their habitat.

ouchwtfomg

lmfao yo… cmon now but also yes

GhibertiMadeAKey

They like to hang out in the shade just like anyone else.

lemming-leader12

weirdest helicopter post ever

confused_trout

What is it with you people? There are fucking bugs, there are rats, trash AND crime and holy shit even a helicopter now and then. Does everything this mundane need a fucking brain trust meeting post?

Advanced-Wallaby9808

i love that this subreddit is rediscovering 'outside' one element at a time.

47k

People move here then want everything perfect and their way soooo weird

confused_trout

It is fuckin weird

bridgehamton

What is with you for stating the obvious and fighting against the issues in our neighborhood. If you want old bushwick then move to brownsville but no one wants rats, trash, and crime in where they live.

confused_trout

It’s fucking flies not a crack epidemic

bridgehamton

I was replying to your comment since you were triggered by flies.

Yehann

Bushwick overall is a pretty nice neighborhood. You come across as very pampered.

Forti4o

Old bushwick? Bushwick always gonna be bushwick bro, dont get it twisted. If you dont want trash, rats or crime, just move to the suburbs

bridgehamton

Sorry to break it to you but neighborhoods change. Upper east side used to have rats and trash but it got resolved. Same is going to happen with Bushwick. It takes our collective effort to get it done.

Forti4o

Rats never gonna leave nyc. And yes neighborhoods change, but dont forget the foundation of it all. Its still here so respect it. Bushwick aint gonna be this safe haven unless all the gentrifies move everybody out. So sorry to break it you

Nestman12

Nah he’s fine

Realistic_Plan1241

“Our neighborhood” hope you was born and raised in bushwick saying that

Pretend-Flower-1204

I think he’s just tired of these posts. Like a swarm of flies near a park is normal lol or helicopters and trash in a densely populated area

okeo_

I’ve noticed the same thing, unlike what some people are saying they definitely are around specific trees - not just in Brooklyn but all over the city. They’re most likely fungus gnats caused by excessive moisture around the roots. Best way to deal with them would be improved drainage around the trees, which unfortunately is unlikely to happen. Otherwise, insecticide at the base of the tree could help. I’ve thought about spreading a non-toxic one around the tree beds on my block.

SergeantBananiel

Yeah. The park had trees and grass of course there’s gonna be more bugs. It’s called being outside the fucking house

Affectionate-Law6315

Wait until the spiders fall out of trees and the birds poop on you. Welcome to New York

olihoproh

Bro flies swarm everywhere. It's what flies do. Don't over think it

nebesaurus

Aphids I think. They were really bad last year too. Fuckin with my petunias

The91outsider

MaxPower208

You definitely must be new here

Flat-Landscape-6564

I ask and am curious if this is a trash issue or if it’s to do with certain trees or something else?

SirGavBelcher

no. Gnats are very common especially around humidity and summer time where there's trees. if you go to other parks like Central Park or Prospect or Van Cortlandt Park there's SO many during summer time. when it's cold they die off and fuck off. NYC in general has a lot of natural bug life! That's why they added the bugs/insects section to the Natural History Museum

Flat-Landscape-6564

Thank you! That makes a lot of sense

aWildDeveloperAppear

File it under a “going outside issue because I’m a nervous loser” in your Goggle docs or Exsell.

Forti4o

💀

lemondsun

I think it’s the trees

aWildDeveloperAppear

Stop feeding this stupid bullshit.

Active-Knee1357

People move to places that have garbage and flies but complain about garbage and flies. 😁

no_ordinary_bish

Yeah it’s from all the dog shit people don’t pick up

BostonSucksatHockey

Bugs in NYC? You don't say. I got a dozen bites yesterday. So I put on some anti itch cream and got on with my life.

ShanghaiChef

Yes. Open your mouth real wide as you walk through!

nyclovesme

Beezlebub was seen in the MH bathroom last weekend.

magikarpsan

I believe it’s the trees

Mayhemii

Oh yeah, I always notice swarms of flies around trees. Think they’re sick?
