They don't carry pistol or "assault rifle" (5.56mm) ammo anymore. That changed a year or so ago. Only hunting rifle ammo and shotshells now.
Edit: and rimfire obviously
So have I...
but it's now their policy to not allow it.
All Walmarts should have a sign in the entranceway by now, and IF an employee chooses to say something trespassing law comes into effect if you don't listen.
Apparently it has some legal basis in giving them the policy backed right to call 911 unannounced if they see a gun. Whether they choose to do so is based on the local area, your demeanor and so on.
In my state open carry is very common in the rural areas but not in the suburbs and cities. So I see it near where I am but have heard of Walmart employees making a fuss in some of the larger places.
Ours just have signs that ask for you to "kindly refrain from open carrying".
They don't enforce it at all here (and all they can do is ask people to leave and trespass them if they don't, which would be too much work).
That's what they have out at all the Walmarts. Most employees aren't going to do anything but their policy allows any employee to call 911 if desired now. So if they see a gun and it scares them for any reason they can call
All it will take is a Karen or two or someone who is anti gun and some poor person will have a police confrontation without any forwarning.
Never said people don't do it.
They do it near me too.
But Walmart did make it part of their policy now, regardless of whether it is being enforced or not.
That is funny.
I've never understood why people don't just use a holster.
I mean, even a hoodrat, gang banger should be able to appreciate a gun that doesn't go flying across the ground when you forget to hold your pants up.
Not sure why you got downvoted?
I prob got downvoted because of lack of clarification, so i’ll eat that one. I think having a gun partially in a waistband is considered concealed, so if you don’t have a permit then that’s where the whole illegal part comes in. In Louisiana at least. Take that with a grain of salt tho
I've just accepted it at this point lmao redditors don't like to use words for some reason. Like if I'm wrong Id rather they tell me why, its not like I'm being braindead on purpose lmao. Just a case of misinformation from the CCW class I took, although a situation that'd never apply to me because I carry AIWB so I never bothered to really look in it that deep.
Confirmed it's a regional thing.
Some stores still sell handgun ammo (rural areas mainly), most stores sell just about every common rifle caliber other than .556 along with shotshell and rimfire, the rest have no ammo at all and usually no firearm related products as well (urban areas)
During the pandemic, when ammo was scarce and they enacted a 3 box/day limit, they commonly had .22LR, .308/7.62 M80, and 350 Legend. I was lucky enough to snag limits 2x per day in most stores because of shift changes and their lack of record keeping.
Source: I sub contract to a WM vendor and have worked in over 600 different stores.
Used to work for them, it was a result of a larger mass shooting in Texas (2019 I think) they decided to re structure to avoid flak from , well you know. So that's why most locations will carry pretty much rimfire and scatter gun shells and area dependent most non 556 rifle cartridges.
Walmart stopped selling ammunition that can be used in semiautomatic rifles and handguns after a 2019 shooting at one of its stores in El Paso, Texas, killed 23 people.
It's a good place to get fluids and filters for your vehicles, plus things like car batteries, windshield wipers, brake cleaner, etc.
Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic Engine Oil 5 Quart:
Autzone: 37.99
Wally World: 26.44
Group 124R car battery (700 CCA, 3 year warranty, both manufactured by Johnson Controls)
Autozone: 209.99
Wally World: 139.84
My Walmart still carries .308, lots of 30-30, buck slugs and field loads, oddball calibers no one really uses around here like 243, 25-06. 22mag and 22Lr. My dad bought my first shotgun from Walmart, a single action .410
Haven't been in a while but around October I went with my wife and out of interest checked. It was mostly just shotgun shells, some .22lr ammo, and maybe a few boxes of 9mm FMJ.
I know mine only sells hunting calibers now. For rifles and shotgun. No pistol/revolver calibers and no standard AR calibers. Its been that way for years now though. First they stopped selling shotguns and rifles after the columbine shooting ( I am not even near columbine but what ever) then in more recent years the previously mentioned hunting ammo only switch.
Personally with them being anti 2A I only buy ammo there as a last resort. I’d rather it sit there and them loose money on it.
Availability varied by location to location before that. The gun/ammo is also a higher effort to profit ratio than most Walmarts like to deal with if they don’t have an strong enough customer base expecting it, while also being in lower crime areas too I’m guessing.
They have a basic selection of mainly hunting ammo. I don’t really buy anything from there because there are plenty of cheaper options I can buy locally or order online from companies that actually support the 2A.
I was in getting my oil changed a few months back and asked them if they still sold ammo.
The two workers who seemed like they were probably 2a positive told me: “we stopped selling ammo after the mass shooting in the Walmart in Texas”.
I believe there was another shooting at a Walmart in Virginia after that, but I recall the Texas one was when they removed guns and ammo

Seconded... They also made it a corporate wide policy to not allow open carry for anyone but Leo.
Ah yes that will stop an attack. “Sir you can’t bring that in here!”
Yup. Stupid decisions. I take it as yet another tick in the pro column for conceal carry.
They don’t care about stopping attacks. They care about avoiding a lawsuit lol. Anyone who’s a victim will sue any and everyone to get paid.
Really? I've seen like 6 people open carrying at Walmart in the past year lol
So have I... but it's now their policy to not allow it. People open carry at the Walmart by me all the time. They're idiots but they do it and nobody cares. And I live in a very blue part of the state.
Never said people don't do it. They do it near me too. But Walmart did make it part of their policy now, regardless of whether it is being enforced or not.
that’s funny, i saw a guy in there with a gun in his waistband the other day. which i’m pretty sure is also illegal in my state 💀
That is funny. I've never understood why people don't just use a holster. I mean, even a hoodrat, gang banger should be able to appreciate a gun that doesn't go flying across the ground when you forget to hold your pants up. Not sure why you got downvoted?

Iwb is concealed. I read it more as tucked into a waistband with no holster. Still don't know why they downvoted u

That was actually more than a year ago. It was leading up to the big push for the 2020 election. The assault ammo ban at walmart was even pre covid.
Don't let them know you can shoot .22lr out of a pistol or .308 out of an AR platform
Na I literally saw 9mm for sale in a WM in Flagstaff over the weekend lol. It’s a regional or city thing

Same. Huntington WV. 9mm and 5.56 for sale.
Oh no, if only someone were to tell them about the history of each cartridge they carry and what gun they were originally manufactured for lol.
Lots of Walmarts still carry .223
Broke faux militia fudds in pajamas w one shoe on
They stopped way before the pandemic. They did it as a point to show how anti-gun they are.
As I stated originally, we used to get boxes of 9mm at Walmart before the plandemic.
All my Walmart has is 22 and shotgun shells
Used to work for them, it was a result of a larger mass shooting in Texas (2019 I think) they decided to re structure to avoid flak from , well you know. So that's why most locations will carry pretty much rimfire and scatter gun shells and area dependent most non 556 rifle cartridges.
[This is the correct answer.](https://edition.cnn.com/2019/09/03/business/walmart-ends-handgun-ammo-sales/)
Here in north central GA it’s only rifle calibers (excluding .223 and 5.56), shotgun ammo, and rimfire.
Nothing. Thanks Illinois.
In SoCal, they don’t even stock any sort of ammo at all anymore. Use to be my go to for super cheap range ammo
Where the hell have you been?
At the mercy of assholes who are too fucking lazy to fight for God-given freedom. Anyway, WHAT ABOUT YOU!?!?!?!??!?!
They still sell 350 legend. I guess nobody told them it fits nicely into an AR, lol.
People still go to walmart?
Not me. Haven't for a few years. Even with two of them that are both within 15 minutes from home.
Walmart stopped selling ammunition that can be used in semiautomatic rifles and handguns after a 2019 shooting at one of its stores in El Paso, Texas, killed 23 people.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been in a Walmart. Looks like the last reason I would ever set foot there is gone.

I live in comifornia…so just a bunch of weirdo smash and grab dudes.

Nothing. They all closed here.
NERF guns!
Honestly haven’t checked since Covid, always kinda assumed the prices would continue to suck
Availability varied by location to location before that. The gun/ammo is also a higher effort to profit ratio than most Walmarts like to deal with if they don’t have an strong enough customer base expecting it, while also being in lower crime areas too I’m guessing.
Mine sells a small selection on .177 bbs

I stopped buying from them well before that when I couldn’t get anyone to unlock the shelves. Walmart customer service is terrible.
