I say no to grip safeties across the board, especially for carry

Yodootz

I wouldn't buy a grip safety for anything *but* carry. It's the only time it's useful.

phillybob232

I just don’t trust that under pressure I’m *definitely* going to get it to disengage

Yodootz

I can understand that fear. The grip safety on the XD-M elite is a bit larger than on my XDS, and I'm not sure if it requires a firmer grip to disengage. On the XDS it's SO easy to depress and so far down from the beavertail that I cannot find a way to grip the gun that doesn't disengage it. I've had my wife and several new shooters try it out, and before I correct their grip they do everything from low grips to tea-cupping it. It goes bang everytime. I'm personally more afraid of a stray coat string in my holster that I can't see than I am of the grip safety.

th3m00se

I have the XD-M Elite 3.8 in 10mm. Solid piece. I don't shoot it as much as the grip length turned out to be a little small in my hand in practice (though I've got some extended mags on the way to help with that). If they're still offering it, make sure to get the free optics plate from SA (should be a flyer in the box to request it from their site) and save yourself a couple bucks. Allegedly SA had a problem in some of their lines where the grip safety was getting stuck and was a pain to fix, but I've not experienced it personally on this or my older full size XD-M. YMMV. I'd say at $350 to send it and have fun.

RedOwl97

I have carried an XDm compact 45 for years (not the elite model). It has very soft recoil and is a good match for my hand. Over many thousands of rounds I have only had one issue. The trigger pull started to get “gummy.” The root cause was a build up of carbon in the striker channel. Once I cleaned that out every thing worked fine.

RepresentativeHuge79

That's basically the xdm 3.8 compact - with an optics cut. The xdm 3.8 compact, was actually my first pistol. I actually sold this gun for a S&W m&p. My major issue with these xdms is the grip safety, that locks the slide if it isn't depresed. There are cases of that sear for the grip safety breaking under hard use, and sealing a live round in the chamber. The only way to fix that is to ship it back to Springfield, with a loaded round in the chamber, to have them drill it open. The guns are decent. But the way they did their grip safety, is a massive safety concern

mjedmazga

It's with an optics cut, an improved trigger, and +1 extra round flush fit magazines compared to the Gen 1/3.8 Compact. My second carry gun was also the 3.8 Compact, and I put several thousand rounds through it, and went through several defensive pistol classes. I've heard all the complaints and theories about the grip safety being a failure point but never experienced it or know anyone who did. It's a decent gun and the weight of the slide makes it a great shooter - even rookie shooters at the range really enjoyed shooting it, and were able to shoot much better groups with it compared to a similarly sized "Glock 19" (for me, a p80c, since I don't actually technically own any Glocks at this time). Regardless, in .45 ACP or 10mm, I would say the Elite makes sense, if you are not already invested in a different platform and want something concealable. I would not be concerned about the issues with the grip safety at all. It's less than ideal but the odds of a failure are certainly quite low, similar to any other stoppage failure on any other platform, imo, Glock or Sig. Springfield/HS Produkt is phasing these out so keep that in mind when it comes to spring/replacement part availability.

RepresentativeHuge79

Are you sure about that trigger claim? Because the trigger looks exactly like the gen 1 xdm compact i had. It looks like the only difference is the optics cut, flared mag well, an slightly larger magazine

mjedmazga

Yes, I am sure. All the XDm Elites came with what Springfield called their META trigger, which they claimed was an improvement over the triggers in the original XDm models. If you believe the triggers look exactly the same, then you are mistaken and I would consider checking again, because not only are the triggers not the same, but they also do not look the same, either.

BarryHalls

IIRC the grip safety also wears fairly quickly and relies on a TINY hair spring. These can cause it to either fail to engage or fail to disengage. I like the concept of a grip safety, but the implementation in this and other cases has been undesirable.

RepresentativeHuge79

Exactly why i sold mine. The chance of my slide locking up with a live round in the chamber- was a no go

SwaySh0t

Underated gun. Better out of the box sights and trigger than a Glock30 at a better price point. it did feelsnappier than a Glock 30 but that’s all perception. People just bandwagon hate Springfield for complying with some anti 2A stuff yet forget smith and Wesson did the same shit. Springfield makes great products and have been on fire lately with hellion, hellcat, and echelon.

BarryHalls

I had serious criticisms of the XDs when they were the same price as Glock, but at nearly half the price of current gen Glocks AND optics ready in a sub compact 45 (which Glock still doesn't offer!) the Springfield is much more attractive. In short many moons ago I was a fan of grip safeties, but after having to fix a few I am much less a fan, but they are for some people, and the extractor could be more robust, but they have certainly proven themselves on the whole. I'd replace the grip safety spring and inspect that it engages/disengages properly, and replace the extractor every 10k rounds. You'll need to make or buy a tool for the extractor. I would find one to shoot and shoot the Glock 30. The XDS45 vs the Glock 36, the XDS45 is a handful, but the 36 is a MONSTER. The Glock 30 and 30S are a handful, but not brutal. I haven't shot an XD in subcompact 45. The 30S and 36 benefit from an increased power recoil spring. That super light slide comes back at the speed of light. I am married to the 45 acp and married to Glock, but Glock hasn't done much to advance their 45 acp offerings since I bought mine 10 years ago, and it seems Springfield has.

nastygirl11b

I have this gun and like it a lot Also has 13 round mag options

Yodootz

I carry an XDS with a grip safety. I love the grip safety for carry. First of all, the gun hasn't malfunctioned ever and I have roughly 2500 rounds through it. I can't imagine how shitty your grip would need to be for the grip safety to be ANY sort of issue. However, it does make me feel a lot better when holstering. Thumb on the back of the slide ensures the grip safety isn't being depressed, and having that extra layer of protection against a trigger snag discharge brings me peace of mind. Gun guys will hate on you because of SA's "anti 2a" shit. They're reliable firearms and nobody will tell you differently.

Mindless-Internal-54

I have the elite compact in 10mm and really like it. The magwell got taken off right away tho, with my large hands it doesn’t sit in a good spot. And my pinky is barely on the factory magazine baseplate when firing, so I got some Pearce extensions for all my mags. Can get either the +0 or +1 extension to keep the capacity same as the factory mag. And it’ll come with two flat base plates but I’d rather have my pinky on the grip. For me the only downside is the super limited choices for holsters. I do like the basic muddy River tactical kydex iwb, using soft loops. And that’s how I carry it aiwb. When holster shopping you DO have to make sure you’re making sure it’s compatible with the elite model due to the ambi slide stop. You find the huge holster selection like you do with Glocks/m&p’s.

ninjaxams4

Shot a buddies full size 9mm xdm last year, I didn’t like it at all. Had a weird recoil impulse and the ergonomics were goofy to me.

Lucky-Safe-9504

Lol this brings me back to my XDM days yes I owned the 5.25in precision elite one I sold it for a Glock 34 I did carry it I didn’t like the grip safety. It always made me think it’ll fail you have to press it to run the slide as well
..never again

Slugnutty2

Had it, Liked it, no complaints from mine. Only reason I traded it was there is an issue that CAN but may not ever happen where you lose grip contact with the back strap safety in the middle of the extraction cycle that will necessitate the gun going back to SA which in turn they send it back to Croatia for repair. I've never seen it happen but there are "reputable" trainers that have spoken about this both online and in podcasts that "have seen it first person" during classes. I'll leave it up to you to decide if it the outside possibility of it ever happening to you warrants passing on the purchase. The XDs also suffers the same issue of lock up.

onone456evoii

I had one in 10mm, not .45 but can share my experience. Pros: Nice sights Slim Grip safety is unobtrusive Ambi controls are nice Easier takedown than a Glock Cons: Grip is slippery Bore axis is high so recoil is more pronounced I eventually sold it since the recoil in 10mm was so punishing. I bought a Glock 29, and even though it doesn’t carry nearly as well, it shoots better for me.

VengeancePali501

The best 45 carry pistols are the m&p shield in 45, glock 30 gen 4. XDs are not great.

[deleted]

don’t do it

bandito1121

I don’t have any experience with this firearm but I know it’s ugly and I know I wouldn’t give Springfield any of my dollars after they went anti 2a

otxmyn

how did they go anti 2a?

First of all, let the record reflect: two world wars Secondly, 10 round magazine restricted states. The defense rests, your Honor.
