Federal HST

Opioidal

I run 147, you?

User_Anon_0001

124

MowMdown

124 +P

Handyfoot_Legfingers

Same dawg! It slaps.

Jimmy-Pesto-Jr

150 gr

Opioidal

I did just assume 9mm huh

gobingi

Federal actually does seem to make 150 grain 9mm hst, but I don’t know why one would buy it over 147 grain unless it runs better https://bulkmunitions.com/9mm-150-gr-hst-jhp-federal-premium-p9hst5s-200-rounds/

spcngo

They make a 150 for micro and sub compacts

nyatalyn

somehow the 3 extra grains and probably a difference in bullet geometry makes it a hell of a lot better in subcompact barrels. nothing has better expansion. it's a shame they seem to have discontinued it along with their other micro hsts in 38, those were also phenomenal.

BannedAgain-573

Hst of any grain is impossible to find at the local shops.

Opioidal

Wow I really learn a lot on this sub. You guys rock

GucciusCeasar

Second this. Or gold dot 135s. I default to these 2 without a second thought

Inevitable-Sleep-907

There's a reason many professionals are issued hst

dsmdylan

Same with Gold Dots. I carry Gold Dot G2 124s when I can find them and HST 124s are my #2.

PrimaryAd9613

Contracts………

Link-Slow

Do some research, HST in many many third party tests performs better than the competition. Also, the bullet is crimped and sealed much better. I had constant issues with Hornady bullets sinking into the brass. I've never had an HST budge on me.

AHansen83

Hornady stays sinking into the brass

Link-Slow

Most annoying shit ever especially for how much they cost.

Inevitable-Sleep-907

Given for performance......... With all the options both from federal and other companies hst was selected

PrimaryAd9613

Department of defense is all in on these after their testing Superior to hollow points per their report Current times

Pepe__Le__PewPew

All day everyday. I said it in another thread, but I shot probably a thousand rounds of the 124 grain through my glock 19.4 and I have not had a single failure. It is excessively proven ammo.

WANYK47

Do you have to order it online? I want to load HST as well but it seems to not be available in my area or gun stores just aren't carrying it. I can find Hornady American Gunner which is what I'm using for now, and Critical Defense and Sig V Crown (which I've thought about).

alltheblues

Order online, in the 50 round LE boxes for best price. Cabelas near me usually has some. Academy gets some in store every once in a while too.

Siegelski

Check out www.ammoseek.com. You'll find much better deals there than academy and cabelas.

alltheblues

I did say buy online in 50 round LE boxes for best price…. He did also express interest in stores that carry it

TheShrpDrssedShooter

You gotta buy in bulk to really make a difference. Buying 50rds at a time is costly. They get you with the shipping. This is one of the best deals I've found. https://www.flipammo.com/products/federal-premium-ammunition-5753-cec80524-bc3a-45ff-9b79-8dce51d2bcbc

zachman0308

Sig V Crown would be my choice out of the 3 that are locally available to you, but you'd still be better off ordering a few hundred rounds of HST and call it a day

intensetbug

Exactly, if it didn't pass the piss test I don't want it

MajorDinesol

I saw them silver coated ones? For you know.. other beings

Hereforyou100

Nickel not silver

Jack_Shid

Federal HST's or Speer Gold Dots.

_goodoledays_

It really is this simple.

Pure-Pessimism

Carry both of these in separate mags for my 9mm. underwood in my .380 and .38.

anlwydc

Wtf are you me

fuymfgfom

Hornady critical duty.

Graab187

This is what I carry.

Careless_Yoghurt_512

This guy knows what’s up ^

Jhawk386

Whatever is on sale lol

Altruistic_Ad_4953

115g Hornady critical defense -- yes aware of the setback concern. I check every time i load or unload, and I shoot the top round regularly

TomatoTheToolMan

I've had Critical Defense for two years now, and never seen any setback issues. I genuinely do not know how people have so many issues with this.

Altruistic_Ad_4953

I so far have had none. But I'm vigilant because I keep seeing reddit posts lol

FranticWaffleMaker

Same, my shield doesn’t have any issue but I won’t seat anything more than once in my Lcp.

Kealel

I've had multiple boxes of CD ammo for my bedside 9mm (PPQ M2). If I have it in the chamber more than twice, it starts setting back. I keep buying it because I love how easily it cycles, even if set back far enough that it would pass as .380! I take it to the range long before I let it get that bad now.

No-Aerie395

I keep an eye on mine as I had one round begin to set back, so I removed it and always check closely now. Was only the one round for me though

JimMarch

Same here. The sights on my Taurus G3c are regulated for 115gr ammo.  Of all the 115s I've tried the critical defense is by far the most accurate.

CancerousSnake

The thing about Critical defense I like is they have the ring that goes around the bullet so you can see when it’s been set back even the smallest bit and it’s time to use a new rounds

sambonidriver

124gr Gold Dot

bigshotsuspence

Underwood 68gr Xtreme Defender Platinum Edition

ThoriumG

Underwood Xtreme Defender 90gr.

edventure_2025

Is that the solid copper projectile? If so that's what I carry as well.

ThoriumG

One of them. There's also the Xtreme Penetrator. I got a couple of boxes of those to play around with on the range, if I ever get time to get to that side of my property.

edventure_2025

I dream about being able to walk into my yard and shoot. Damn suburbs get cranky about that.

ThoriumG

Getting out of the burbs was one of the best decisions I ever made.

GMEthLoopring

I use 68gr +p

BubbleHead87

ditto

wooly88

I carry this to. Any concerns with over penetration?

ThoriumG

That's something I've thought about with every load I've used. Other side of the coin is under penetration when it comes to clothing in colder weather, less of a concern but still there. I've done some Paul Harrell style tests of my own and I'm fairly comfortable with my choice.

R_Shackleford01

People are still sleeping on those rounds, when they may actually be better than hollow points. For the nonbelievers, see page 32/33 of this joint agency test. https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=31110&d=1538934056 Edit: G9 rounds are similar and seem just as nasty.

SteveHamlin1

Wow! Superb resource - this is an excellent, detailed, professional report on defensive pistol ammunition. Top-quality reference material to download and save. It's about the design priorities, and a number of test results, of different defensive pistol calibers and bullets - by caliber and by bullet type (i.e. review of calibers by bullet type, and review of bullet-types by caliber) Great background on terminal performance, wounding & incapacitation, ballistics, review of prior tests, ammunition types, calibers, testing methodology (gel, barriers, animal tissue // assement of penetration, reliability, barrier performance, wound cavity), charts of ammunition tested, results & discussion by bullet type, results & discussion by caliber. Highlighting of which calibers are most successful with which bullet types (it varies, but 9mm=fast solid copper, 45=heavy hollow point). This, along with Lucky Gunner's self-defense pistol ammunition tests, should be widely known - excellent resources. (backup link: [https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=31110&d=1538934056](https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=31110&d=1538934056) )

FlapJacked1

Yep these! I use the 68gr but same same

rjames06

Liberty is garbage ammo. HST or Speer Gold dot is the golden standard

WestSide75

HST and Gold Dot are two of the better-performing rounds, but they’re not some official “golden standard.” That’s just online hive-mind. Critical Duty, Critical Defense, and V-Crown perform similarly. EDIT: Its hilarious to watch the hive-mind crowd throw a temper tantrum when one suggests that there are viable defensive rounds outside of HST and Gold Dot. What a bunch of tools.

Kenneth_Pickett

It is hilarious people will spend 10 minutes on an internet forum and think they know absolutely everything because they read a repeated opinion of a few strangers, who may be 13 years old for all they know. The same people who have 8 gizmos bolted to their gun at all times. Petrified to go to a grocery store with less than 68 rounds of ammo. Getting a little off topic with my rant but im waiting for the EDC carry posts that include an extra human being just in case they see Bin Laden at Dollar General and need covering fire.

TrifleEmotional4843

A high percentage of the largest law enforcement agencies use Gold Dots and HST. Their may not be a gold standard, but those agencies spend millions of dollars on testing and choose those rounds for a reason.

terpenepros

In the lucky gunner tests Hst 124 +p had 32% larger expansion diameter then 115 gr critical defense, and even higher % against 135gr critical duty +p and regular, I feel like that performance increase is too high to call it similar, not that critical defense/duty won't get the job done, I personally carry it along with hst.

WestSide75

Personally, I’d rather go with the round that penetrates closer to 12” than 18” for defensive carry ammo. And I also don’t like to shoot +p ammo in my handguns because, as you said, regular pressure ammo will also get the job done. So why put the excess wear and tear on my components while training? There are multiple factors to consider when selecting a defensive round and some people rank them differently. What I look at in the gel tests is (1) which rounds consistently expand well and (2) which rounds consistently penetrate well enough but don’t over-penetrate. Using those criteria, it’s easy to see which brands/weights will work well enough and what will not work nearly as well. Parsing beyond that seems pointless to me because shot placement is the overriding factor at that point.

BarGreggsby

I'm with you on +p. More is not always better. Why would I want more recoil for the same wound?

[deleted]

Underwood

Holiday_Tourist1441

Hst

Olewarrior34

Wife and I both carry critical defense, I also have some 365 crown v in my sig

Responsible-Size-491

Is the 365 crown designed specifically for the 365? Or is it just a name they gave it

Olewarrior34

Supposedly it was designed just for it

WestSide75

Sig’s web site says that it was designed for short-barrel pistols, but they undoubtedly tested it heavily using one or more of their 365 models.

400HPMustang

Hornady Critical Defense in my P365 and Critical Duty in my P226 or 1911.

[deleted]

Always federal HST or federal punch.

MagsOnin

Im using the Winchester Silvertip JHP 147 grain… accurate and never failed when I shoot them in the range…

Responsible-Size-491

No, it’s a 100% copper projectile.

gnawledgeispowr

Gold Dot in my 9. Underwood Extreme Defender in my LCP Max.

OldTatoosh

I run Underwood Extreme Defender in my .380 though there is a mag full of Hornady Critical Defense in my fanny pack. I used to carry Federal HydroShock for my .45 ACP, but the recoil is a bit much so I am shifting to standard pressure Speer Gold Dot. My .32 ACP Seecamp is getting spruced up at the factory. I will run some tests but I hope to carry the Underwood in it as well. Sadly, my Walther P22Q doesn’t like 22lr Punch. It was going to be my wife’s house gun, but I have been pretty disappointed with the Walther on a number of levels and wonder why I bought it! It does function okay with CCI fodder, so it is shootable. Otherwise it would be up for sale on Gun Broker!

AverageJun

Speer gold dot

DannyBones00

There’s basically three options. Gold Dot, Federal HST, and Hornady Critical Duty/Critical Defense. Generally in that order. There’s a handful of others that are semi acceptable. Sig Sauer V Crown. Any of Winchesters various self defense loadings like Ranger T, PDX1 or whatever they call it now. But these are definitely a step below everything else. Liberty is garbage. Unproven. Unreliable. Doesn’t penetrate deep enough. I wouldn’t bet my life on it at all. CCW is about increasing your odds of survival, so carry ammo with a proven track record.

mallgrabmongopush

I love those Sig V-Crown rounds, I stocked up on a bunch of them a few years ago when they were the only plentiful option.

Sorerightwrist

Critical duty > critical defense Only due to the defense being prone bad seating

DannyBones00

I agree. I always list them together but honestly I almost feel like Critical Defense belongs in that second tier. It’s at the bottom end of “adequate” on the penetration scale.

AM-64

Winchester Ranger Series ammo is law enforcement ammo, not normally available for regular folks. It's quality stuff, far better than lots of other ammo. Hornady Critical Duty and Critical Defense are also both different rounds with different bullets.

DannyBones00

Is it? I have some I got from a LGS a while back. 😂 Haven’t run it yet because I didn’t see where I could get it online. Guess that explains it. 😂

[deleted]

Speer gold dot.

Ericbc7

In some jurisdictions where hollow points are not allowed, I like an fmj, flat point like Win service grade 115 (very snappy). For heavier bullets, any fmj with a flat point.

VengeancePali501

How’s the point of impact with those? Usually seen the 50 grain 9mm not align even close to the sights at moderate ranges.

pbsmash

Underwood, Underwood, and Underwood. Which actual round depends on the gun and where I'm going with it.

Virtual_Produce_9975

Hoplophilia

147gr +P GD. [sic]

Significant_Bass9663

Critical defense.

Ok_Painter_286

Federal HST

Jaded-Row-1707

Not those. Use to carry them in my Shield+ and loved the lightweight factor + they sounded cool as fuck. However, after watching some ballistic gel tests they literally act like grenades. They blow up the second they hit soft tissue and have disappointing penetration. A nasty round but not something I would count on when there's simply more reliable options. You do you tho, you'll never have to worry about over penetration and it's definitely devastating enough to take someone out of the fight. I'll try and link the video I watched below if I can find it, it's been a while.

Jaded-Row-1707

https://youtu.be/nyLVu_3pOO4?si=FkRc6gE1DqawJ21_ Not the video I was orginally thinking of but it's Paul Harrel so I still recommend

nac286

Upvote for Paul

_WEG_

Right now I’m carrying Sig HP’s in my Shield .45

Superb_Equipment_681

Federal 9BP-LE. I'll switch to HST or Winchester Ranger LE when that runs out.

RileyK_10

Hornady critical defense(NJ)

Kerwynn

Using a .45 1911… usually Hornady critical duty. But I’ve been experimenting with the Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman and working on getting their CCW line as well. I find myself less in the city and more outside near or in the mountains as of late though.

Responsible-Size-491

I have a 1911 in .45 that I love shooting but have no idea what to carry with it.

WestSide75

115 gr Hornady Critical Defense for my P365 147 gr HST for my full-size home defense pistol

ImHereForLifeAdvice

Underwood 230gr +P, but still researching other 45acp options. When I carried 9mm, it was 124gr HSTs or Rangers.

Federal 115gr Hi-Shock JHP if I’m carrying the 9mm and 185gr Hornady Critical Defense if I’m carrying the .45. Sometimes though I’ll carry 230gr +P JHP by Federal or Hornady rounds in the .45 as I really like how they perform.

To this day I cannot understand why people with no experience think they know better than actual professionals who never select boutique rounds for good reason.

Thordor15

G9 external hollow points or Hornady Critical Defense/Duty.

mild123

Under wood

Stiffy4Freedom

Under appreciated. I carry Underwood and almost everything I CCW. Liberty is awesome too, but Underwood is just consistent as all hell.

octopush

My CCW instructor was FBI SWAT trainer for 20 years and gave us the lengthy rundown of why it is best to go with whatever the current FBI barrier blind testing winner. For the past few years that has been the Hornady Critical Duty (or Defense if your pistol isn’t rated for +p) round. The critical duty rounds have been picked consistent number of times in recent history. So I run Duty ammo even tho it’s more expensive due to Defense propensity to compress after a few times in the chamber.

NarwhalN00dleSquash

Quality ammo (Speer Gold Dots or HST depending on what's in stock) Definitely not meme ammo like this

Responsible-Size-491

Here’s Paul Harrell testing the ammo https://youtu.be/nyLVu_3pOO4?si=rVh-oAEgxXW1Mbad

Boogaloogaloogalooo

Paul harrel admits his tests arent scientiffic and are for "entertainment purposes only" I love the guy, too, and have been a viewer for years. But his videos cannot be used as evidence

fungi2bwith

Currently Barnes TAC XPD 115g +p, usually HST

JSD05

Do with this what you will. I have Hornady Critical Defense right now, but may switch to HST. https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#9mm

Inevitable-Sleep-907

HST or hornady critical

Wuoffan1

Right now just Federal Classic JHP, they're cheap and I've put enough through my gun to know they're reliable. I plan to get some HSTs soon

mallgrabmongopush

At the moment it’s Hornady Critical Defense 115gr

[deleted]

Norma monolithic holopoints or Sig v crown 115 grain

Mindless-Internal-54

Currently I’m using Hst or gold dots for 9mm, gold dots for 380, golden sabers for 38spcl, critical defense for 357mag, sig vcrown for 10mm and HST for 45acp. For the house, 62gr gold dots in 223.

Federal 124 gr. HST. I've been carrying a full size with the standard pressure stuff but got a few boxes of +P for my subcompacts. I'll probably gradually phase that into my stash as I use up the older standard loads, just to have one common ammo for all my "serious" 9mms.
