I don’t think Teven is getting extended this offseason barring him taking a pretty team friendly deal. The second to last paragraph shows why I don’t think he gets paid this offseason.
He’s great when healthy but can’t stay healthy and I think Poles will want him to prove he can play a full season (or at least 15 games) before he offers an extension that’s good for both sides.
IIRC there were lingering issues regarding his back.
That hasn't really been a problem in the NFL - he tends to get injured but it seems to be a variety of injuries versus one nagging injury.
Yeah this. I think if he plays at least 15 games and is a pro bowl caliber Guard then I can see it. But even still Poles didnt draft him and he’s missed 20 games the last three seasons. Then theres Kiran A, if he shows promise they may feel like he makes a suitable replacement. I like Teven but as of now I wouldnt give him big money either.
I feel like Kiran is slated to play tackle, though he could kick inside if that puts our 5 best lineman on the field, but isn’t the longterm vision to be he’s eventually a starting tackle for us when he’s ready?
Best case he’s a tackle, worst he’s line depth. He has the physical traits best used at tackle. I believe he had some of the longest arms in the draft.
If you have to pay Teven, plus a high priced backup for the 1/3 of the year he's guaranteed to miss, that has to be priced into his contract.
Truthfully if you can find someone almost as good as Teven, you should just let them start all year and not waste money paying Teven.
Finding someone almost as good as Teven is the hard part though. Good, young OL talent doesn’t hit FA often. You can find 1 of the 2, but not both often. And when you do find it, you pay through the nose.
Exactly. He might be our best lineman, I mean hopefully Wright ends up being that in the next couple years, but if you're going to play half a season it's hard to pay him much especially for more than 1 year prove it deals.
On the flip side, if I were him, I'd be looking for the biggest long-term bag possible regardless of the team because he could be a ticking time bomb. He's good enough, I bet someone will pay him okay even if he plays 10 games this year. Good linemen aren't easy to find.
Amen, dude.
Personally? I've always felt like he needs to keep his feet a little closer to the ground.
If you make your team sag, you got no swag. You're just a poser.
I think that's why the Bears haven't signed him to an extension. For this team, it's not only about being another body OR even just having talent. This regime is big on character . . . the man in the helmet. This might be a do or die season for him. In the end he will influence the decision the Bears have to make.
He needs to stop acting so goofy. Or else he'll take that helmet off at the end of the season and never put it on again.
I’m honestly not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but NFL the average NFL Olineman plays in around 89% of the total games. Jenkins has played 31 of 51 possible games in his career. That’s just under under 61%. He is far below average when it comes to availability.
No he really isn’t. Yeah lineman do get hurt more often but even then Teven has missed more time than your average lineman. He’s hasn’t played more than 11 games in 3 years and to add on to what the other person said, just look at our division to see that’s not normal.
Graham Glasgow has only played less than less than 13 once in 8 years and Jonah Johnson hasn’t played less than 12 in his 4 years for the lions.
Elgton Jenkins has only played less than 14 once in 6 years and their other guards only been a starter for 1 year and played 12 for the pack.
Dalton Risner has played at least 15 all 5 years of his career and Ed Ingram has played 15 and 17 in his 2 years for the Vikings.
All our divisions guards have played more games their “injuried” years than Teven has at any point of his career.
Difference JJ has proven he's elite. So yeah he might miss some games but he is a difference maker on the field. I stan for Teven but realistically he hasn't done enough yet to look past the injury problem
I mean for the most part Jaylon was a lock down corner who just didn’t get turnovers this year he went for it and showed he can not only lockdown a receiver but take the ball away. I would’ve paid him regardless but you wanted to see those takeaways.
This is going to be a really tricky negotiation. Teven Jenkins is a beast, but the best ability for an OL is availability and he's missed long stretches every year of his career.
Do you, as the GM, approach him and offer 70% of the market rate for a quality starting NFL guard because he's available for 70% of the games at best (thus far)? Do you, as Teven's agent, accept that?
I think this is the rare instance where if I’m Jenkins, I want to wait another year and prove that I’m worth top dollar. If he plays well then SOMEONE will pay him, whether it’s the Bears or another team who might even give him another shot at playing tackle in that scenario.
Honestly I think they will waiting and Jenkins will be resigned. How much he gets paid is going to depend on how many games he plays. If the bears are good he won’t want to go anywhere. And if I’m the bears, I don’t want a guy that plays as a top 10 guard to just walk away. I’d prefer to roster him if possible and continue to draft and develop. Whether he plays 8 games or a full season I have a feeling he’s going to be really good when available.
Agents & players will always try to secure the bag asap so I imagine they’re asking for that top money rn from the bears then if Teven stays healthy, they’ll up that price for the bears & leverage the market against us.
Risky thing for us is we already put money into Nate Davis & Teven is a different kind of high risk player.
As a Dolphins fan who pays a bunch of attention to you guys, Jenkins feels like your Armstead. Great when he plays (Armstead is a Top 3 LT when he’s healthy), but he’s healthy for like 10 games a season, plays in 13-14. And every time he comes off the field, every time he’s just a liiiiittle slow to get up, you hold your breath.
Is Jenkins worth a second contract? Yeah, he’s good enough. But the best ability is availability, and so far he just hasn’t been available enough to be worth top money.
Breaking News: Frequently injured player on the last year of their rookie deal wants a new contract with more money, but the team wants him to prove he can stay healthy first.
Tevin should not be suprised he has to play most of this season's games to get a new deal haha
I like Teven Jenkins...a lot...That said, this is a wise move. Teven Jenkins has to prove he can play a season without getting hurt if he wants to be paid. If I'm the Bears, I'd wait until the end of the year to see how this year plays out. As much as I like him, it doesn't make sense to pay him big money when you're just not sure if he's going to be available to play.
This really isn't a big deal. The bears staff are still looking at free agents and are trying to evaluate the players so yeah kinda makes sense that the bears aren't interested right now
Because you don’t get what you don’t ask for. There is zero downside for him asking. If anything it goes like this
“Hey I want an extension for xxxxxxx dollars”
“Uhhhh no. We like the way you play a lot but you have to be healthy for a whole season and we can’t commit that kind of money for somebody who doesn’t play.”
“Got it. Thanks….we agree when I play I’m worth the money. Talk to you after this season when I play every game”
“Pretending he has leverage” is like the most hilariously cynical way to look at this possible lol. I think the kid likes being here and he wants us to be the ones to pay him.
This is the same Jimmy Butler / Jaylen Johnson contract situation.
Guy just needs to go ball out this year.
There’s no way either party will agree right now to a deal. It’s almost not even worth discussing.
He shouldn’t get an extension until he proves he can stay healthy. Love Teven and he’s a great player but he misses too much time to give big money to until he proves otherwise.
He's played about ten games per season since he got here, I get that he wants security but he's the definition of a "prove it" player right now. No one is shelling out big money for a guard who barely plays half the season
I mean, just make the contract performance based. If he gets injured/doesnt perform then he wont make his quotas and his salary will adjust accordingly.
His loyalty is crazy to me. It feels like every year the Bears openly treat him like he’s a problem and his response is to want to stick around longer. I would think he want to go somewhere else as soon as he could
As much as I love Tev, he needs to prove he can stay on the field. The best ability is availability and he's been hurt a lot.
Definitely one of the best G's in the league when he plays, would be great if we could figure out a deal.
Man we really need to see Teven stay healthy and I hope he does because this line is going to be a priority next fa/draft especially without him. We’re projected to have about 7.6 mil in cap space after rookie signings. Maybe we do some restructuring but that’s not much cap to sign anyone significant but I’m not sure if there’s anyone too high end to pick up off FA anyways.
Stay healthy then. He's got fantastic talent but he's made of glass. I wouldn't offer an extension either. You get paid what you're worth. Being hurt half the games every year is worth less than zero.
Pay the man, one of my favorite current players, the passion and ability is evident, Olin Kreutz type mentality, IMO, and the way he went after anyone that pulled a cheap shot on JF was inspiring! The man loves playing football and is a true Chicago Bear!
“We reached out, but nothing is on the table,” Jenkins said.
He should know by now; Eberflus: "Nothing's on the table, nothing's off the table."
Jenkins: "I want my salary to go up!"
'Flus: "I don't know, what's up yours?"
Teven is a stud but can't get over the back issues. Even with that, he's the second best Olineman we have behind Wright. I would offer him a team friendly deal.
This feels a little like the Jakob Johnson situation. We could lock him up now for a reasonable price, but if he balls out and has a near pro bowl season for all 17 games, it’s going to cost the Bears a lot more to keep him. I know Jakob had more leverage and played a more premium position, but it feels similar. I think I am ok with them making him prove he can stay healthy.
2021 is not a fair stat as he was a rookie and was a rotating piece until later half of the year when he actually started to play. 2022 and 2023 are justified.
"Breaking News: Local NFL Team is having second thoughts about extending an NFL Player who has played less than half the NFL games he is eligible to play in due to said player having a shit ton of injuries, more at 11."
Peak journalism right here
I don’t think Teven is getting extended this offseason barring him taking a pretty team friendly deal. The second to last paragraph shows why I don’t think he gets paid this offseason. He’s great when healthy but can’t stay healthy and I think Poles will want him to prove he can play a full season (or at least 15 games) before he offers an extension that’s good for both sides.
Wasn’t this the reason teams passed on him during his draft class in the first place
IIRC there were lingering issues regarding his back. That hasn't really been a problem in the NFL - he tends to get injured but it seems to be a variety of injuries versus one nagging injury.
True, but it's often connected that compensating for one weak body part causes issues with the rest of the body.
Back + short arms gave question about his ability to stick at tackle
Yeah this. I think if he plays at least 15 games and is a pro bowl caliber Guard then I can see it. But even still Poles didnt draft him and he’s missed 20 games the last three seasons. I wasnt aware. Whats the plan for Braxton is he moving inside ideally or a potential cut down the line?
If you have to pay Teven, plus a high priced backup for the 1/3 of the year he's guaranteed to miss, that has to be priced into his contract. Truthfully if you can find someone almost as good as Teven, you should just let them start all year and not waste money paying Teven.

When healthy, Tev is easily our best lineman.
I think Wright is better but I love Tev’s nastiness. Hopefully with his injury history, we get a deal that works well for both the team and Tev.
Amen, dude. Personally? I've always felt like he needs to keep his feet a little closer to the ground. If you make your team sag, you got no swag. You're just a poser. There's basically no reason for the Bears to negotiate in good faith with the franchise tag in play.
Almost certainly has back issues. Not good long term.
Not many O linemen stay healthy for a 12.. Wait no, 14.. Nope. A 17 game season. It's corporate propaganda. He's a normal player, health wise.
I’m honestly not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but NFL the average NFL Olineman plays in around 89% of the total games. Jenkins has played 31 of 51 possible games in his career. That’s just under under 61%. He is far below average when it comes to availability.

Difference JJ has proven he's elite. So yeah he might miss some games but he is a difference maker on the field. I stan for Teven but realistically he hasn't done enough yet to look past the injury problem
And JJ’s injury concerns aren’t a fucked up neck. I love Teven and hope he can pull it together, but neck injuries are always brutal.
Jaylen was a top 3 corner in the nfl last year….
[удалено]
That’s fair, but I think he’ll fair better than Kyle fuller.
Arguing for Teven Jenkins by putting down Jaylon Johnson is some of the most unhinged offseason talk I can truthfully remember.
I mean for the most part Jaylon was a lock down corner who just didn’t get turnovers this year he went for it and showed he can not only lockdown a receiver but take the ball away. I would’ve paid him regardless but you wanted to see those takeaways.
I too would like my employer to give me more money.
[удалено]
Your employer would like to see how this season goes before considering you for a pay increase.
How much guaranteed money did you ask for? They may have cap concerns
Dude reminds me of Kyle Long. Amazing talent, has the ability to be a perennial Pro-Bowler, but just can not stay healthy.
That’s a fact.

Bro is easily the best player on the line currently, only Wright do I see having the talent to become better
Really? All I remember was him being constantly injured and then getting absolutely demolished in the last week of the season
His performance in the Packers game was beyond pathetic
Looked like a cut in that game And here he is saying he didn’t get an offer. Lmao.
The line played like shit in both games against the Pack, so idk if that’s the games we wanna use for those 5 guys lmaoo
He plays the whole year, then maybe. Otherwise, Poles is letting him walk and that’s the right thing to do.
This is the same Jimmy Butler / Jaylen Johnson contract situation. Guy just needs to go ball out this year. There’s no way either party will agree right now to a deal. It’s almost not even worth discussing.
but he decorated that Christmas really well though
IF he can stay healthy the contract will write itself.
He needs to prove he can stay healthy and perform for another season if he wants a long-term extension this early.
Stay healthy and then you can get a nice payday. But Tev hasn't been able to stay healthy at all so why would the Bears commit to him??
He'd have to play the whole season or like 90 percent of it without injury to overcome that reputation I'd imagine
He shouldn’t get an extension until he proves he can stay healthy. Love Teven and he’s a great player but he misses too much time to give big money to until he proves otherwise.

Play 95% of the games this year, and I'm sure Poles will pull out the checkbook

2021 6games 2022 13games 2023 12games Eloy Jimenez is that you??? as soon as he gets the bag. he's going back on the injured list. guarantee it.
2021 is not a fair stat as he was a rookie and was a rotating piece until later half of the year when he actually started to play. 2022 and 2023 are justified.
He was a first round pick doesn’t that mean the team has a 5th year option?
2nd, so really if not wanting to offer anytime soon. Trade, tag or let walk.
Oh ok that makes sense then
We should re-sign him, even if he’s unhealthy he won’t hamper the team. We know if he is playing he’s above average.
I could see something happening mid-season if he shows up and dominates consistently.
I dont think they should make an offer this offseason. He’s in prove it mode, needs to play at least 15 games this year.
"Breaking News: Local NFL Team is having second thoughts about extending an NFL Player who has played less than half the NFL games he is eligible to play in due to said player having a shit ton of injuries, more at 11." Peak journalism right here
I absolutely love Jenkins when he is on the field. If he can play 15 games we should extend him at 80-90% market rate imo
If he plays 15+ games he's not going to sign at a discount to market rate.
