My newish 2022 iPad did this often. One way around is opening the app offline then connecting by toggling airplane off then on once the app loads. Another is to close the app and reopen. Last if that doesn’t work. Make sure you’re logged into game center or android equivalent write down your player id. And remove app and reinstall. Mine was up to a 17g update which is more than the game and all its content

Nope only happened on my old phone which couldn't handle it.
My phone needed an update. That solved it.
