Village has better quality, flavours, and no controversy. If MBM has 1,000,000 haters I'm one of them. If MBM has 1 hater, I'm that one. If MBM has 0 haters, I'm dead
Sounds like a real cunt. Village all the way. It's like what happened with Without Papers in Inglewood. Great food but the guy was an absolute shit sack.
Fair about the controversy, but village often over-churns their ice cream losing some of the smoothness that should exist in something made with cream and not milk.
Village is inferior. The ice cream is richer and creamier at MBM. Village ice cream is comparatively icy tasting. Also, the flavours are more creative and inspired at MBM.
I’m confused by that- I know two people who have worked for MBM and both said he was a great guy and a pleasure to work for, one of whom is still friends with him even after leaving the job once graduated
You know where he gets his “creativity and inspiration” from?
https://preview.redd.it/9x7i1t8lw79d1.jpeg?width=1257&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8899472092020dfde60d7775718bc21cfa4e846a
So I’m a chocolate ice cream die-hard, and I swear Village’s chocolate ice cream has absolutely no chocolate flavour. And believe me, I’ve had it 5-6 times. It just tastes like frozen milk to me.
So that’s part of the weakness of Village ice cream because they get all their ice cream base made in BC and shipped over. When it’s over, they add the flavouring. A true chocolate ice cream should have a chocolate base, not a white generic one with chocolate added
Yes! Meanwhile, the valhrona chocolate at MBM is to DIE for. That’s where I see a clear distinction between the two places… besides that, I think there’s positives and negatives on each side to where they’re pretty even
Milk has become our go-to for ice cream when we are out since they started running it out of the music school on 4th St. Glad they have their own location now and that more people are finding them.
Village is good ice cream, but Made by Marcus is richer tasting and they have unique flavors. As others have pointed out, the chocolate flavors at Village taste like ice milk.
I usually go the Village location on 10 Ave because the wait isn't usually too bad, unlike the 17 Ave location for Made by Marcus, but I don't get chocolate.
Village.
I'm WAITING for their Nutella Latte to come back. I will buy a chest freezer and stock up.
I have both in my neighborhood with MBM closer to my home and I walk right past to go to Village.
Question for all the Village people in the thread: What flavor compares to MBM blueberry lemon curd? I want some tang to my thang and the few times I've tried Village, I didn't land on a flavor that I loved. I'm always up for trying again though!
MBM has better flavors for me (Espresso Pretzel Toffee / Lemon Curd Blueberry, specifically).
Luke's Drug Mart for Flavour of the Month locations in Killarney and Bridgeland $2 for kids in a cup, and I think $4-$4.50 for adults. It's a lot of ice cream for the price and is always soo good
Tried cookie monster in Parlour last week. It was ok, as I just like ice cream with strong milk flavours, this one I tried can not satisfy me. Comparing with village and MBM, their ice cream has strong milk flavour and better texture.
The MBM Sea Salt & Goat Milk Caramel is GOATED, I can’t think of a Village flavour that comes close. Don’t get me wrong, I still like Village and go more often since it’s closer.
Did a market analysis and compared basically every ice cream manufacturer in the city.
I do think that Marcus has the best ice cream in terms of general quality.
But he’s also not a great dude. He’s not a good person and he might have gotten into the business solely to make money, but his formulation is 10/10
I found him super passionate about ice cream when I met him at his og location early in his run, but I've heard he's far less nice than I had picked up.
I gotta know more (aside from his side hussle as a mouse breeder), do tell.
Btw im still a MBM fan in terms of flavour. Village just kinda has the texture of store-bought whereas MBM makes the sweet creme. Also, my lactose intollerance is less tollerant of MBM (but my heart wont let him go), confirming my suspicion that its bettwr quality haha
Village. MBM uses a cashew base for a lot of their vegan flavours, which doesn’t work in my life. Village’s vegan options are the best of the best and this is a hill I will die on.
MBM vegan flavours are sad. It’s the type of thing that you’d get as a vegan if you’re with non vegan friends and you want to fit in, and they all decide to go to MBM.
Village vegan ice cream on the other hand is actual gourmet ice cream that I go out of my way to get.
Real. Recently with the warmer weather their Choco dipped churro is something I think about a lot. Truly the tastiest flavour of any sweet treat I've ever had.
I like Village. The Two Hills Earl Grey is my favourite staple, but the lemon meringue they had this month was amazing.
Parlour is also nice once in a while, and Amato Gelato's an OG staple. Plus they have durian ice cream, which was my mom's favourite before she couldn't have dairy anymore.
[here’s one thing](https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/s/MVp1LPhJX9)
A lot of the employees who have come forward with info have done it in the comments of their instagram posts which get deleted. A bunch came forward with google reviews as well and they managed to get most if not all of them removed as well.
I like Village. They seem to have better quality and ingredients with good basic flavors and some neat seasonal ones, almost all of which of the ones I've tried, I've liked.
MBM has more...unique flavors, but I find that I don't actually like many of them.
Yeah. They try to be too fancy at the expense of being good, much like Hoopla donuts IMO.
I also think their ice cream is too sweet.
Village’s salted caramel ice cream might be the best thing I’ve ever tasted.
I love Village. I don’t usually buy pints of icecream for home but their Earl Grey and P&S coffee changed that. They also seem to have a better texture to me?
I have mad beef with Village because I interviewed for one of their ice cream maker positions and they just ghosted me after. Like I made the effort to go to your stupid store in person to interview, you could at least send me an email saying I wasn't selected for the next round.
But that's a personal beef. Also I didn't like the idea of making the equivalent of under three ice cream cones an hour in pay lmao.
Agree. Billy sent his friends after me on yelp, and I received a private message, after I wrote a bad review when they first opened many years ago. It was tacky, and they used a slur. All because I was complaining about their lack of customer service after 4 visits in a row. (Not gonna go into detail here)
But I will never visit the place because of that. They are banned in my house.
I hate Luke's as a business.. :/ I don't like that my scripts were handed to the baristas to give to me, and that they don't even check who is grabbing the meds. As someone who takes ADHD meds, I had to move my pharmacy to where random can't just peek at my name and tell the barista they're me.
So the controversy is real. And apparently the only good flavors at mbm are the lemon blueberry curd and the goat milk.. but man that goat milk is UNIQUELY goat milkey. I felt like I was eating my goat milk soap lol.
I’m fine with either honestly. Marcus has better regular default flavors, but their seasonal flavors had been underwhelming (though definitely adventurous) and Village does them better. Village also has superior dairy free options so that’s where we usually end up going
I vote Marcus and Village the same. I live a block away from Marcus so we usually go there vs driving to Village. If I'm going to drive, I'll go to Milk on Center Street as I really like it there and the owner is very pleasant and nice.
I vote for neither because I'm allergic to eggs and both have eggs. I know there are vegan options, but I can get better vegan ice cream at the grocery store...
Or just buy egg free ice cream like Foot Hills or Chapman's!
Village 100%.
Single source dairy means the lactic sugars actually taste like something. It’s hyper premium.
Marcus is good, but that’s it just good.
Ice cream isn’t just the carrier of a flavour, it should be treated as the feature that just happens to have another flavour added.
Am I the only one who thinks Made By Marcus makes weird flavours ?? Lanvander Basil Earwax. Cantaloupe Hot Chili Brisket. I don’t get it. Team Village all the way
As a dairy free ice cream eater, I prefer village, but the made by Marcus sorbets, especially the soft serve ones, are really good. Village dairy free flavours are better and more creative imo, more flavour, creamier.
I’m on team Village. I love their sundaes!
Village has better quality, flavours, and no controversy. If MBM has 1,000,000 haters I'm one of them. If MBM has 1 hater, I'm that one. If MBM has 0 haters, I'm dead
What’s the controversy with Marcus?
[here’s your tea](https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/s/3yWceO4As4) it pours down the thread
Hey Thats Me!
And me!
Sounds like a real cunt. Village all the way. It's like what happened with Without Papers in Inglewood. Great food but the guy was an absolute shit sack.
Fair about the controversy, but village often over-churns their ice cream losing some of the smoothness that should exist in something made with cream and not milk.
If I have to hate something then I want to hate it like you do. Salute.
I’ve heard nothing but good things from people that have worked there. There’s just 3 accounts on here that keep trashing MBM.
FOH? BoH? And just 3? You may want to count again
Former employee?
Me too! Just because of that thread. It's just not acceptable
Village is inferior. The ice cream is richer and creamier at MBM. Village ice cream is comparatively icy tasting. Also, the flavours are more creative and inspired at MBM.
I see your point but refuse to support Marcus with the accusations of how he treats his employees
Interested in knowing more about this. Got any sources?
I’m confused by that- I know two people who have worked for MBM and both said he was a great guy and a pleasure to work for, one of whom is still friends with him even after leaving the job once graduated

They don’t make it all in house??
That's weird to say the least.
I think they may be getting the base made by dairy farm and ice creamery, D Dutchman.
As a consumer, you would think they would, but they don’t
Agree I don’t like their chocolate
Yes! Meanwhile, the valhrona chocolate at MBM is to DIE for. That’s where I see a clear distinction between the two places… besides that, I think there’s positives and negatives on each side to where they’re pretty even
The MBM Sea Salt & Goat Milk Caramel is the best ice cream I've ever had.
Agreed but in general I’m a village guy
100% I felt something spiritually when I tried it the first time
Blueberry lemon curd at MBM is bomb
It's the only flavor I've gotten from there because I need it every time I see it lol
100%
that’s the only one i’ve tried from MBM and it was pretty damn good. sucks he treats his workers like shit, as i’m finding out
Ice cream has a better texture at MBM (Made By Mice)
It’s thanks to the toppings, I mean the droppings. Best mice cream in town.
Ratatouille is a legit chef tho
Yo check out Milk on Centre St it's better than them both
Thank you for saying this! Love Milk, and the owners are nice. Their mango sticky rice is AMAZING
I’ve had so many ice crystals in the ice cream from Milk. I love their flavours but I’ve found a lot of it unpalatable with its texture.
I agree. I want to like Milk more but the texture of their ice cream needs a lot of work. I found it also left an oily film in my mouth.
Second this
The Dunkaroos ice cream is dangerous. I throw the lid away when I open it
I got that + white rabbit candy and it was a nostalgiabomb in my mouth
lol this just shows how everyone’s tastes are so different because I wasn’t at all impressed with milk’s quality or the dunkaroos flavour
Agreed, it’s amazing
Milk has become our go-to for ice cream when we are out since they started running it out of the music school on 4th St. Glad they have their own location now and that more people are finding them.
+1, owners super nice and location is super nice for a walk/sit around crescent heights.
They have great flavours but the texture is inconsistent for me. Sometimes it feels like part shaved ice
It’s good but they have had AHS orders against them.
For new ceilings, which was rectified. Not all AHS citations are concerning
Probably for not wiping your seat after you left.
Parlour in East Village has the best ice cream in calgary imo
Great... Another ice cream joint I need to try...
Village is good ice cream, but Made by Marcus is richer tasting and they have unique flavors. As others have pointed out, the chocolate flavors at Village taste like ice milk. You might like their honey berry flavour.
Made by Marcus and it’s not even close. Blueberry Lemon curd!
Yes
Luke's Drug Mart for Flavour of the Month locations in Killarney and Bridgeland $2 for kids in a cup, and I think $4-$4.50 for adults. It's a lot of ice cream for the price and is always soo good
I love soft serve! Therefore I love Luke's ❤️
That was not the question
But it is the answer
Village all the way
I will ride hard for Village forever
How about Parlour?
This needs to be higher, their base is incredible.
Do they have soft serve?
Tried cookie monster in Parlour last week. It was ok, as I just like ice cream with strong milk flavours, this one I tried can not satisfy me. Comparing with village and MBM, their ice cream has strong milk flavour and better texture.
Cookie Monster was such a massive disappointment imo. Texture was just way off. It made me a strong one and done with Parlour.
The MBM Sea Salt & Goat Milk Caramel is GOATED, I can’t think of a Village flavour that comes close. Don’t get me wrong, I still like Village and go more often since it’s closer.
To me village’s crème brûlée is elite. Only knock is that it’s a seasonal flavour
I commented on this thread shit talking the goat milk ice cream lol. I'm glad some people like it so it doesn't get thrown in the trash.
gotta go malt chocolate honeycomb at marcus.
THIS 100%. Malted Chocolate Honeycomb might be my favourite ice cream flavour of all time.
Me and the wife likes the salted caramel and malted chocolate combo. Either position is good
Almost always village. Made by Marcus sometimes goes too experimental on the flavours and it doesn't work out.
Did a market analysis and compared basically every ice cream manufacturer in the city. I do think that Marcus has the best ice cream in terms of general quality. But he’s also not a great dude. He’s not a good person and he might have gotten into the business solely to make money, but his formulation is 10/10

Village. Creme Brulee. Oh my god.
Both are great, but have found that MBM scoops more generously, and you can do the single split scoop.
Both
Village. MBM uses a cashew base for a lot of their vegan flavours, which doesn’t work in my life. Village’s vegan options are the best of the best and this is a hill I will die on.
I 100% agree. I will go to Village specifically for the Vegan options and I ain’t Vegan, and I love dairy.
Thanks for this info! I am allergic to cashews. I’ll avoid MBM.
Village > MBM. Simpler, more normal and palatable flavours that are also richer/creamier.
Village by far, Marcus’s lactose free options when I had them did not agree with me. (There are dozens of us lactose folks, DOZENS!)
This, I want to love MBM but I can’t eat it lol. Village always has great vegan options for those of us with the skill issue of digesting milk.
For those saying abbeys, Abby is just as trashy as Marcus and Righteous Gelato when it comes to how badly she treats staff.
Wait, the Righteous guy is a D?
He's the worst of them. Long documented too.
[here’s one thing](https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/s/MVp1LPhJX9) A lot of the employees who have come forward with info have done it in the comments of their instagram posts which get deleted. Oh my gosh, wow, what a failure in every step of the way of handling this
I love the Mint Grasshopper Pie at MBM. Soooo gooood.
Where's the third one aka my favorite ice cream Shoppe?
The comment I was looking for. The OG yyc ice cream shop
Village lol
My favourite at MBM is Marcona Almond Ganache and at Village they have seasonal(?) Oaxacan chili ice cream. I will sit at the fence.
Village, all the live long DAY! 🫶🏻
#ClanMcKays
Noto gelato ‘s mango sorbet is out of this world
Would also jump on Noto, their mocha Gelato is unbelievable
MBM because I can get 2 flavours in 1 scoop (half of each). Village is BS
Kids double at Village is the way to go 👍
I like Village.
MBM ice cream is much smoother and their flavours are great..
Both give me diarrhea
Made by Marcus. Love the lemon blueberry.
MBM, and it’s not that close. Richer flavour. Love them both though.
IDK man - I really tried to like Village but holy oof their sea salt caramel has is more like just salt... that salt level is too damn high!
Why do I have to choose?

Village Ice Cream!!!!
I love Village. I don’t usually buy pints of icecream for home but their Earl Grey and P&S coffee changed that. They also seem to have a better texture to me?

Costco ice cream, best $3 cone around
I have mad beef with Village because I interviewed for one of their ice cream maker positions and they just ghosted me after. That's totally unprofessional of that manager. Granted they probably had like a hundred applicants, but still.
Hey they did the same to me for the same position!
Village but find their flavour selection lacking lately, but maybe that’s just me!
I mean… Village has good ice cream and even makes flavours for my doggos… I love my doggos more than anything
Mackays?
Question - do they have soft serve?
Village all the way!
Dairy Queen lol
That's ice milk, we're talking ice cream.
Village and that dang earl grey ice cream will forever own my soul
Village all day
Pass. I’ll go to Milk every time, small locally owned family store and the ladies who run it are simply fantastic.
i built MBM on 17th.... mmmmmmmmmm
1 dollar McD's cone
Village is better for me, especially when they have seasonal ice creams with cake bits in them.
Parlour
I like Sweet Tooth because I like Thai rolled ice cream
Third option: Lukes Drug Mart https://preview.redd.it/avdv75csi89d1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=996ff60c8140893a1cfec8531094fa12ec919fb3
Luke's?
I hate Luke's as a business.. :/ I don't like that my scripts were handed to the baristas to give to me, and that they don't even check who is grabbing the meds. As someone who takes ADHD meds, I had to move my pharmacy to where random can't just peek at my name and tell the barista they're me.
Fair. I like the ice cream, but I can't say much for their service.
They couldn't have come up with some less innocuous imagery to get the point across? Flames vs Oilers? Glorifying 2 brutal gangs it's ridiculous.
The one with the shorter line.
village has had the same flavors for the last 10 years. Made by Marcus is higher quality.
Neither… I’m driving to Cochrane for Mackays
So the controversy is real. And apparently the only good flavors at mbm are the lemon blueberry curd and the goat milk.. but man that goat milk is UNIQUELY goat milkey. I felt like I was eating my goat milk soap lol.
I would love to see a dark cherry ice cream without an added addition and the same thing with peach
Question - does Village ice cream have any soft serve flavours and if yes, that aren't vanilla or chocolate?
Village always has ice flecks and barely any flavor so MBM for me!
S'up blood
Wut up blood!
None. I would go for Holy Shakes.
Village! One of the people on the pints is me!
I vote for neither because I'm allergic to eggs and both have eggs. I know there are vegan options, but I can get better vegan ice cream at the grocery store... Or just buy egg free ice cream like Foot Hills or Chapman's!
Village hands down. Marcus is innovative but so many are hit or miss. Village is by far always a hit.
Village forever.
Village
Village
I have never had either of these how do they compare to mackays or foothills creamery?
I prefer Village, but share in the hate for Marcus. Their stuff is alright, I just think Village is better.
neither, mines pretty great.
Village for more classy flavours, Marcus for funky stuff
Village 100%. Single source dairy means the lactic sugars actually taste like something. It’s hyper premium. Marcus is good, but that’s it just good. Ice cream isn’t just the carrier of a flavour, it should be treated as the feature that just happens to have another flavour added.
Pick a side who you want to be better at murder... select... and expect a call from the police at your door
Am I the only one who thinks Made By Marcus makes weird flavours ?? Lanvander Basil Earwax. Cantaloupe Hot Chili Brisket. I don’t get it. Team Village all the way
MBM on piru
Surprised it’s not just Mackays in Cochrane, cause you city folk seem to love coming to line up around the block for it.
As a dairy free ice cream eater, I prefer village, but the made by Marcus sorbets, especially the soft serve ones, are really good. Village dairy free flavours are better and more creative imo, more flavour, creamier.
Village all the way haha

Neither. Dutchman uses better cows less stomach irritation
3rd option: Marble Slab Creamery
MBM!
Village. Made by Marcus has some odd flavours
Made by Marcus is a flaming dumpster fire compared to Village and every flavour is hot garbage. Blue til I die.
Lemon curd blueberry is amazing
I got a milkshake from made by marcus and it was terrible, maybe i need to try village
Village between the 2, but I like Abey’s more
