+1 for a Lexus

Dylanc431

GS450H, sit in traffic in the complete serenity of electric mode, but when you mash the go pedal you still have a V6 at your disposal. Incredibly comfy seats, great sound systems, I'm sure the newer ones have carplay/android Auto but even the older ones can be retrofitted Honestly, even in my IS, I don't complain about being stuck in traffic.

abtx

Can confirm

KEEPCARLM

The GS450h would be the perfect car if it wasn't so ugly

Dylanc431

Can't see it from the inside!

KEEPCARLM

True enough! Just a shame as the is300h in the right colour and trim (fsport) looks awesome. I will admit the gs in GSF or Fsport trim looks decent, but the other trim levels scream old man car so loud

Dylanc431

I actually don't really notice the difference between Fsport and my Luxury trim, other than the wheels and painted calipers. And obviously the LFA style dash The electric blue colour they do is fantastic though EDIT - I think the official name is Ultra Sonic blue

Ok-Fox-9286

Lexus NX in top spec has the comfiest seats I've ever sat in. Otherwise a car that has the ability to drive, stop and steer in traffic. Think some audis have it, tesla certainly does. I know you don't like touchscreens but they are the best you can get, light years ahead of the shit systems you get in VW, skoda, MG, citroen etc.

privateTortoise

You could do all you listed in an '07 Honda Legend. It also can drive along A roads and Motorways on its own though the bosses at Honda made it so you have to make slight adjustments to the steering wheel. Its a brilliant system on top of a very comfortable car with little road or wind noise. Honda being Honda didn't make a big deal out of its abilities and thus sold in very small numbers over here. The engine and gearbox are under stressed, awd and though soft suspension it holds on rather well and not too much body roll when pushed hard. Unfortunately today its hard to find many for sale though they'll easily do 250k so as long as the service schedule has been maintained to Hondas specs they are a great, bargain barge for long distance work.

useittilitbreaks

I had a ride in a Legend once. Felt about as un-Japanese as it could get - massive V6 and lazy automatic but a very nice barge.

privateTortoise

I throughly enjoyed my outing in one and when you get to grips with its awd set up they can be pushed quite hard before all the electronics kick in and dull it all down. Alas I live in the sticks and with tall hedges, narrow lanes and doris in range rovers it would have needed the sides repainting every month. So bought a low mileage Accord coupe V6 and even though that liked to drink petrol, dull and detached to drive is one of only two cars I regret selling. In that I could drive from Kent to the lake district and feel fresh as a daisy when I arrived and was just as quiet and comfy as the Legend.

hachi2JZ

I went through a brief Legend phase before I got my licence lol, there's a handful around the country for not very much money which is neat https://www.theparking-cars.co.uk/#!/used-cars/honda-legend.html

privateTortoise

I did go hunting after my first post here and the only last gen that looks worth getting is the one in Scotland but suspect that'll be a bit rusty underneath. The other uk ones seem to have a few electrical gremlins which could end up costing over a grand to sort. The cars have a system that raises and tilts the front bonnet to make it safer for pedestrians and if that goes wrong or suffers a bump its not cheap to repair. These days I just make do with a company can as there hasn't been that many cars in the last 15 years that make me think of owning one. Far to heavy, detached to drive or cost silly money with an interior resembling a tarts boudoir.

hachi2JZ

thats the pedestrians' problem and not mine šŸ™ƒ I agree that I wouldn't want to be trying to fix an iffy one though, S-Class levels of tech in a rarer car doesn't sound fun

privateTortoise

I'm in total agreement over the pedestrian lark, the amount who can't even look away from their phone when crossing is effing ridiculous. Had someone step infront of me at a crossing when the lights were green when I was on my motorbike. Thankfully I was only doing about 15mph and all he suffered was a ripped suit and he had the gaul to insist I pay for a new one. The prick took it to court and the judge wasn't happy and I ended up getting everything on the lhs of my bike that had any blemished replaced via his wallet. And on top of that this numpties suit was 3k lol.

hachi2JZ

That's borderline natural selection. At least the court have him (what should be) a proper wake-up call. In my area it's mostly high school kids that have the self-preservation (and academic ability) of lemmings.

privateTortoise

This was some city wanker in docklands and so there was a couple cctv cameras that picked it up. I don't know how I didn't laugh when he presented and showed it happening from 3 separate cameras. This fuckwit was so deluded he thought he would win the case and didn't even employ a solicitor. Then again my solicitor wasn't much better as he was employed by my insurance company and was probably his 2nd day on the job. I knew it was going to work out OK when the judge whilst looking at the paperwork asked me if my bike was a V twin. No one else seemed to pick that up but for me it was him saying that he knows his bikes.

hachi2JZ

Reminds me of that guy who drove the length of the country in a record time, mostly 100mph+, and getting a judge who'd been to the nurburgring in a court case that was eventually thrown out (but on a smaller scale, of course, and you genuinely weren't at fault in this one lol ĀÆā \ā _ā (ā ćƒ„ā )ā _ā /ā ĀÆ)

Pericombobulator

My old guvnor ran these. We went out in it somewhere and I had to comment that it was the most comfortable car I had ever been in.

privateTortoise

Honda can and do build tremendous cars but haven't the first idea about marketing. Granted the last Legend wasn't a looker but for anyone not wanting German it was a solid alternative.

Pericombobulator

He had two in succession. He could easily have afforded something Germanic. He did respond that there was no obsession with low profile tyres or sports suspension.

privateTortoise

I get why modern cars have low profile and it's mainly due to the size of body panels for safety reasons and they have to fit larger wheels so the cars proportions still look fine. As we all know it fucks up ride quality and performance in the same way a teenager chucks 19" rims on a civic. These days with oversized wheels and most buying suv type cars just shows how out of touch and brainwashed they are. It is possible to have a very comfortable ride with low profile tyres but only Alpina do it, and even then if you need a new damper its around Ā£4k per corner šŸ˜®

Pericombobulator

You can still put smaller wheels on large cars. The Police put 17" on their 530d pursuit cars. They just look out of proportion and a bit lost in the wheel arches. I have 19" on my 335D. I do have the adaptive dampers, but the rude over typical UK roads could still be poor. I replaced the runflats, which has improved things.

privateTortoise

Certainly. Sounds like your rubber is the same as the M3 with a 35 side wall. I had runflats on a pd150 golf in 02 and hated them. Also had to beef up the engine mounts due to a little ecu/intercooler fettling so had to try ans get some comfort back in to the Golf. I'd never get runflats again after that.

Bryntinphotog

I didn't find my top spec NX more comfortable than most, yes nice place to be but the seats weren't particularly plush. Old school Saab seats were way more armchair'esq

Cool-Caterpillar-630

No doubt about that

CarbonHybrid

Lexus without a shadow of a doubt. Couldnā€™t imagine doing my 2hrs commuting in anything else.

B1unt420

I close my eyes every night and dream Lexus release an estate šŸ˜‚

WanderingAlchemist

Definitely worse things to be stuck in than a Jag XJ. Like just sitting in your lounge on the M25

zzkj

Love mine. A sublime place to be. I'm going to miss it when I move on.

HAZZ3R1

An XF is pretty good too!

yorkshiresun

Exactly how I described my xjs and my esses šŸ˜Š

DontVetoRockets

My XC90 is ridiculously comfy and just a very pleasant place to spend time, stick some music or a podcast on and even traffic doesn't disturb my zen.

Sausagedogknows

Iā€™ve got to hand it to Volvo, I have an XC70 and itā€™s fantastic. Iā€™ve got an auto, so stop start traffic is a doddle, it cruises effortlessly at motorway speeds, delivers pretty good fuel economy and is quite simply the comfiest car Iā€™ve ever owned.

DontVetoRockets

Mine has the pilot assist function so it basically drives itself as well. I did London to Manchester the other day without touching a pedal post starting off!

HandwrittenHysteria

Has the infotainment improved on Volvoā€™s at all? The one in the XC40 wasnā€™t very responsive when it first came out

Space-manatee

The Volvo sensus based one is fine (apart from the sat nav is a bit crap) The android based one, post 2020 had issues but I think they are mostly sorted

TryingToFindLeaks

Never found a satnav better than Waze anyway!

DontVetoRockets

The speaker system is brilliant, mine has an Android infotainment system which is still a bit clunky but Spotify works perfectly which is all I really need

adviseribex

Youā€™re not allowed to suggest cars larger than a Fiat 500 on Reddit, people will get angry /s

beavertownneckoil

I had an '06 s40. Still the comfiest seats I've been in. I had done 8hr drives for a week straight one time, not an iota of a numb bum

mturner1993

Would argue (not that I would necessarily buy one and ignoring all the reliability stuff) the range rovers with acoustic glass and noise cancelling headrests. Hybrid for the stop start traffic jams as well.

NortonBurns

I used to do 1000 miles a week in an old \[07\] Merc E280 estate. Comfy as heck. Leather, air, retrofit CarPlay for the big screen. 3L V6 for the oomph.

MrFriendlyPlayZ

Loved my one too, hell of a car

Cptnemouk

Had a 07 Eclass AMG spec for a week while my car was getting fixed. I found it really uncomfortable and couldn't wait to get rid.

D-Hex

AMG Spec stick stupid tyres on them and make them ride harder

Cptnemouk

The ride wasn't too bad. It's the seats and leg room( got quite long legs). Not blaming the car just wasn't suitable for me. I did have an 21 plate amg spec b class last month and because the seat was a bit higher up I found that car really comfortable.

D-Hex

Those are better. The 07 were really not up to spec. The 21 plate is the W213? Those are very nice

Steelhorse91

Merc E Class with ā€œcomfort contourā€ massage seats. Massage either moves up and down your back, or you can just set it on your lower back, thereā€™s loads of adjustable air pockets in the seats to get the fit just right, and I think the air con actually blows through the perf leather.

Federal_Goose4545

I have an e class with the above options and itā€™s so nice. Ive got adaptive cruise also which makes it nice in slow traffic

BoutiqueKymX2account

Everyone will hate me because apparently they are illegal in this sub, but my Range Rover sport is extremely comfortable, literally an arm chair with leg room and head room, heated seats, air con, glass roof, Bang and Olson sound system. Kids love dvd player and play station in the back. Itā€™s a 2014

Breakwaterbot

People hate on Range Rovers in this sub but they're usually people that have never actually owned one. They are so God damn comfy and luxurious to drive.

useittilitbreaks

Or sat in one. I wouldn't want to foot the bill for owning one but I agree with you on how comfy they are, particularly as a back seat passenger. Even people carriers feel cramped compared to a Rangie in the back.

Breakwaterbot

Yeah, they're second to none when it comes to comfort.

Expensive_Tart511

Iā€™ve had the middle seat in a 2018 Autobiography thatā€™s not comfy. But in this pricing territory I suppose the solution is to simply buy an additional Range Rover for >4 passengers.

Pericombobulator

When they work they are lovely. They just have a deserved reputation for unreliability. My CO's Velar is in the garage currently, maybe needing a new engine.

7148675309

Thatā€™s the same with any car though isnā€™t itā€¦. Everyoneā€™s raging jealousy.

CarbonHybrid

Nah my dad was a JLR tech (division of the AA) after he left Lexus and theyā€™re the worst cars ever. Genuinely some shocking and surprising things to be called out for. He went and fixed Lily Allenā€™s Range Rover, brand new from factory, overheating because the radiator fans had not been plugged in. You simply donā€™t get that shit with anything other than JLR. Thatā€™s just the factory issues, they are plagued with problems, anyone who says otherwise is either lying or theyā€™ve genuinely found a diamond in a HUGE sea of rough.

Breakwaterbot

We're not arguing reliability here, we know they can be shocking. But they are still very comfy to sit in.

yorkshiresun

Shagwar

s_hothi

I recommend Merc S class. S350 has plenty over and character yet super comfy and spacious.

OpenJelly1437

I had about 28 cars so far.( XF, S class ,Superbs ,Mercedes CLS,Porsche Cayenne,Tesla Y ,Infiniti QX ,Cadillac CTS/Escalade etc) Most comfy car i've riden in was a Audi Q7 on air suspension. But as a personal car,the Jaguar XF was super comfortable on long 10hr+ trips. 2017 Honda CRV was the worst. Volvos are slow boats with programmed-in acceleration lag for some reason and infotainment systems are lacking, including the XC90.

RuthBaderBelieveIt

Yeah was going to recommend the Q7 as well absolute dream for long journeys the start stop cruise control is great in traffic as well. It's also very quiet for a non eV though we have the petrol diesel might be different. Doesnt exactly meet the no touchscreen requirements of op though as even the climate control is a touch screen

Hot-Red-Take

How would you rate all your cars?

AtillaThePundit

Probably 1 to 28

ojthomas2015

Damn you, take my up vote!

Hot-Red-Take

Plot twist might do a countdown from 28-1ā€¦

OpenJelly1437

The cars i miss the most : [1.Ford](http://1.Ford) Mustang Ecoboost (mega high taxes in my country so I had to get the 4cyl) [2.Jaguar](http://2.Jaguar) XF 3.0 Supercharged 3.Cadillac Escalade 6.2 4.Mercedes S320cdi 5.Current car : Tesla Model Y dual motor 550hp.Crazy fast, crazy economical to run but it does lack ....excitment. I'll skip to nr 28 .Honda Civic 2.2 ictdi hatchback, overall bad to drive

19Ben80

If itā€™s not a luxury car like a Rolls Royce then Iā€™d pick a big Volvo, great seats and ride

mattyprice4004

I regularly sit in traffic in my 2009 530d - itā€™s pretty damn comfy but not a patch on my old Rover 75. Those big comfy armchairs are yet to be beaten, and Iā€™ve owned a rather large array of cars (including 2x VW Phaetons)

Silvabane

Lexus ES 300h by far. IS 300h is good on a budget though.

NakedPatrick

Itā€™s going to be the large German saloons mostly isnā€™t it, so 7 series, a8, s class. A large Lexus is also going to be lovely and can imagine the Volvos are nice places to be.

Emotional-Start7994

I'd agree. Audi A7 is a very comfortable car and is at home on the motorway. They also have comfort seats as an optional extra which are even comfier

Cptnemouk

My Citroen C4 grand picasso may be a shit box. But it's the comfiest car I've driven. Plus it's got a fridge in the dash to keep my drinks cold šŸ¤£

Forward_Artist_6244

Most comfortable car I've owned has been a Citroen XantiaĀ

Individual-Titty780

I have a 630d GT xdrive with the comfort seats. Very nice and the same as the 7 series.

Additional-Second630

Full fat Range Rover

Whole-Award2092

Volvos have a good reputation for really comfy seats.

MrTechRelated

I drive so many different vehicles as part of my business and whenever I have a Volvo come into my stock I am always impressed by their comfortable seats throughout the range. My personal car is a V90 so I may be slightly biasedā€¦

broken-neurons

Recently had the pleasure of driving a V60 with full driver assist across the UK and Europe as a hire car. Was like driving a sofa. Would buy one immediately if I could afford it.

dinger1971

Range rover especially with massager on

DangerShart

In my Tesla I can sit in complete silence with no vibrations while my car drives itself. Seat isn't the most comfortable but there are other EVs with better seats.Ā  Couldn't go back to a petrol car if I had to sit in traffic a lot.Ā

VeeBeeMt

Auto pilot makes sitting in traffic very easy

yolo_snail

I love the Nissan Leaf for sitting in traffic, the Tekna model has ProPilot which is the self driving shite and as long as the road markings are clear, it's pretty good. Has the Bose sound system which is fairly good and I find the seats really comfortable. One annoyance is you have to give the accelerator a little tap, or push the button on the steering wheel to get it going again once it's stopped, but I'm guessing that's a safety feature and on other cars as well?

DangerShart

The Tesla starts moving by itself, all you have to do is touch the steering wheel every 30 seconds or so to prove you're still awake but, and I don't condone this, there are cheat devices available that will do that for you.Ā

aplkm

Only problem with the Tesla is that when it does move off by itself it thinks it's in a street race or something and goes way too hard on the acceleration. I don't know why they can't tone it down.

Mag01uk

Itā€™s like it instantly wants to get up to the speed limit not realising that itā€™s in a traffic jam šŸ˜‚

yolo_snail

Yeah, the Leaf also has a fit if you don't touch the wheel, not sure whether it's a weight sensor like the Tesla or a capacitive sensor like some other cars. Tbh, I don't trust it enough to take my hands off the wheel, so it's a moot point anyway!

WarchiefZekeYeager

Do you never genuinely get bored of sitting in complete silence though? I think especially with the minimalistic interior of teslas Iā€™d find it hard not to go clinically insane.

DangerShart

It does have a sound system you know, a pretty good one too.

Nicebutdimbo

My car before the Tesla was an Aston Martin. Do I miss the sound, sometimes yes. Do I miss it in traffic, definitely not. Also donā€™t miss people winding down their window asking me to rev the engine.

RaconBang

You've heard of music?

DanRan88

Crawling in traffic in an EV is significantly less shit IMO. Even the drone of a decent auto box gets old when youā€™ve had electric.

Fluffy_Space_Bunny

Every Model 3 Iā€™ve ever sat in must have been the worst on the production line then because theyā€™ve all sounded like theyā€™re going to fall apart. Theyā€™ve got the worst rattling plastics Iā€™ve ever come across.

RageInvader

Folk need to remember that because EV's are much quieter than ICE the small creeks and noises seem louder.

Fluffy_Space_Bunny

Thatā€™s not what it is at all, itā€™s just that theyā€™re cheap cars that arenā€™t well made.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DangerShart

Yeah there's more luxurious EVs. An EQs or I7 would obviously better but for double the price.

Jealous-Honeydew-142

You know there is this thing called start / stop. I also sit in silence with my petrol engine off. Without crippling range anxiety.

Comfortable_Force_41

Anything Electric. I work in Trafford park and have to navigate rush hour once a week, luckily. Rush hour used to give me palpitations, sat their idling for no good reason, now I don't give a shit whilst those around me are tearing their hair out

corpjones

Assuming you mean for fuel consumption right?

AccurateChemistry283

I think weā€™ve reached peak car brain if the question is now which car is the best to spend time in but not going anywhere

HandwrittenHysteria

Modern life is hell mate, what can I say?

AccurateChemistry283

Haha fair point

moonski

also the answer is obvs a Rolls

Bhenny_5

Assuming youā€™re at a standstill Iā€™d say Ioniq 5 a campervan where you can flip the seats round and youā€™re instantly in your home away from home. Seriously though, without any extensive experience Iā€™d have to say that any luxury limousine would be my choice. I sat in a 7 series a few years back and I couldnā€™t believe how comfortable the seats were!

pm_me_your_amphibian

My Lexus rx400h was like sitting in a sofa.

Aldred309uk

A mercedes with adaptive cruise control? I don't know about the cars but the trucks work from 0 to 56mph. When traffic stops, the truck stops. When traffic sets off again, tap the accelerator, and it just follows the traffic ahead. All you need to do is pay attention and keep it between the lines. Takes the stress out of stop start traffic!

YooniqUzerNaim

Volvo. Anything Volvo, especially an early naughties XC90

Welshbuilder67

Try a Volvo

Digital-Sushi

Oh my god I hated that commute so much. Did Bolton to Cheadle for about 6 years.. So for this I bought a mondeo titanium x It's like a massive armchair that was cheap to d run and insure, had heated and air conditioned big leather seats and although might be the most snobby badge on it was absolutely bang on.

HandwrittenHysteria

Thatā€™s around about the commute Iā€™ll be doing (but to the old Trafford cricket ground) so Iā€™ll defo take it into consideration. What year model?

Digital-Sushi

I think mine was last of the third gen approx 2014 I think. But I know the 4th gen was just as comfy as my dad had one for ages. To be fair to it, by the time I got rid it had done 90k most of it stop start in that traffic and it never put a foot wrong.

Brickworkse

Just FYI, though I agree and have always loved Ford, my recent brush with a Ford Powershift automatic has put me off them for life. It was on its third rebuild at 70k miles. OP said he wanted automatic, so for me, Ford is a no-go.

FinbarrSaunders69

Mates experience was the same.

77GoldenTails

Volvo V90 CC. Gives plenty of space, comfy seats and wonā€™t come with wafer thin tyres. Get a B engine variant and itā€™ll give diesel economy and hybrid pick up from rest. Inscription spec or similar will have ventilated seats. (Canā€™t remember if the CC does the trim levels like that)

RV_X8

I think an EV is best suited for this if you have access to home charging. Best one is Tesla Model 3 standard or long range depending on the miles you drive. Example: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202407021357739

purrcthrowa

I had a Mercedes ML420. That was very comfy. It didn't quite make traffic jams a pleasure, but it was close.

Correct_Detail3725

Peugeot 504.

Commentdeletedbymods

Mercedes c300 estate for me, nice bit of kit to sit in

Archtects

Ngl mine is super comfy and really quite for traffic. Itā€™s first car I have had with heated seats to. But then a bed of nails would be more comfy than the last 3 cars I owned

docbrown85

Hasn't the Citroen C5 always been king for this?

greenmx5vanjie

With the hydro suspension, that and the C6 are going to take the win for ride

Balily

Bmw 520d touring, Hard to find a more comfortable car imo

OkFinger2630

My BMW 5 series is very comfy. Iā€™ve been stuck for few hours without feeling any discomfort. On motorways, itā€™s super stable yet sporty.

Aaron703

A motorbike. My commute would easily be 2 hours in a car, bike makes it 45 mins.

WeaponsGradeWeasel

The answer to that problem is a bike.

RafflesEsq

I dunno, I think Iā€™d rather sit in an old Lada than have a bike saddle working its way up my arse if Iā€™m going to be stationary in traffic anyway.

WeaponsGradeWeasel

A) a motorbike seat is a lot bigger than a pushbike seat B) if you're on a bike, why would you be sitting in traffic?

FinbarrSaunders69

Not sure my weapon of choice for motorway driving (assuming he's not going to be static the whole time) would be a motorbike, but each to their own :)

freefallade

Lane splitting.

Smart_Joke3740

Underrated comment. Although anecdotally, as a fellow rider, Iā€™ve noticed 80%+ of motorbikes barely filter anymore, vs the exact opposite as recently as 5 years ago.

DesignerButterfly362

Any reason for that that you can think of?

BigFluff_LittleFluff

Skoda Superb, VW Arteon, Volvo (any flavour really), S-class...

HandwrittenHysteria

Arteon is a good shout. Loved that car but they were impossible to get hold of new

Wild_Ad_6464

Throw caution to the wind and go for the W12 Phaeton!

BigFluff_LittleFluff

Loads kicking about 2nd hand now though.

kennyblowsme

Get yourself an 80ā€™s Peugeot 505 Family estate 7 seater. Itā€™s like your favourite armchair from yer living room

ThorburnJ

My old Subaru Forester had ridiculously comfy armchairs for seats.Ā  Fuel consumption was awful though.Ā

Numerous-Paint4123

I feel you're pain, used to do a daily 30 mile stretch on m60/62 in a clio rs trophy which was ermm fun.. Bit of a rogue one but new ford mondeos are unbelievably comfortable, like two armchairs in the front. Not amazingly equipt or particularly interesting to drive but very very comfy..

CatBroiler

Budget?

HandwrittenHysteria

Iā€™d tap out at Ā£400 p/m with a lease. Not sure about used as Iā€™d have to figure out how to finance it

CatBroiler

At the high end, it's Lexus ES300h. You're Ā£50 or so off leasing a new one, but you could PCP a used one for Ā£400. You probably won't be able to get a top-spec Takumi, so you're looking at a 2019 or 2020 approved used standard 300h or a F-Sport. F-Sports tend to be better equipped cars, but the standard 300h does have smaller wheels (18" vs 19"). [Example](https://used.lexus.co.uk/approved-used/lexus-es-saloon-2-5-300h-f-sport-e-cvt-euro-6-s-s-4dr-jthb21b1702034289?___SID=U#) Used, starting from a couple grand and going up, would be: Citroen C6 or VW Phaeton (both 3.0 diesel), Lexus GS450h/300h (4th gen 2012+, 3.5/2.5 Hybrid, both quite rare) or BMW 5 Series GT (2.0 or 3.0 Diesel, it's a 7 series hatch rather than a 5 series chassis/interior wise). I've seen Lexus IS300h being mentioned, and it's a very good value choice that can do most things well, but you do get more comfort with the GS/ES. Interior space in particular is compormised with the IS. I'd also be pretty picky about tyres, you want either a Touring tyre like Bridgestone Turanza 6 and Goodyear EffGrip Performance 2, or a softer UHP like Goodyear Asym 6 and Advan Fleva V701. Any UUHP or run-flats in particular should be binned immediately, along with ditch-finders that used car dealers tend to put on.

CatBroiler

I'd probably add the Toyota Prius PHV as a honorable mention, it's not luxurious, but it's a relatively new car that's got 15s with 65 profile tyres, combined with relatively soft springs, it absolutely absorbs road imperfections. Combine that with the large amount of glass in the interior, that was one of the most relaxing cars I've ever driven. It also does pretty good MPGs too, if you charge the battery to full once and let it self-maintain, 70-80 with an A-road commute. Pure electric range is about 30 miles.

cigsncider

one of those old rollers that can be picked up for a few grand

Red-Tom

Iā€™ve no car to suggest, but best of luck with the M60. I will see you out there. Youā€™re probably aware, but if this job offers flexitime, work around rush hour times.

HandwrittenHysteria

Once upon a time I used to drive Bolton to Stockport. Thatā€™s the reason I have no hair now

Southern-Orchid-1786

Is park & ride an option to miss out the hour of gridlock?

TheSkywriter

Honestly, for me the comfiest car to be stuck in traffic in is one that Iā€™m emotionally invested in. Iā€™ve driven easily more plush cars than what I do own and Iā€™d still prefer to be stuck in traffic in my E46/Legacy. I even enjoyed my old MR2 Roadster despite it being very spartan inside. Helps that all of them had decent lumbar support though. Though if Iā€™m to make a more thread appropriate suggestion, maybe a F12 6 Series?

RED888IT

Ahhhhhh the old junction 13 where traffic is at a standstill everyday for no apparent reason.

Strange_Champion_937

I had a Daimler Super V8 long wheelbase a few years back and that thing was fucking comfortable. Good luck keeping one on the road though.

Geofferz

Convertible. If its sunny you're no longer in traffic, you're tanning! Maybe one with massage, heated/cooled seats, and adaptic cc. Don't know if they exist but convertible for sure.

juanito_f90

My 28 year old Volvo 960. Itā€™s comfier than my lounge furniture.

BigJDizzleMaNizzles

Volvo V90. Perfect commuter car. Fast, comfy AF, roomy. Lovely.

JeetKuneNo

I'm an avid fan of the ioniq hybrid. I found it great for commuting.

tedkravitz617

Personally if it was my own car and I was doing that stretch I'd stay away from a diesel. You might do lots of miles in totality, but an hour of crawling traffic, particularly when the engine isn't up to temp will likely cause issues. Had a 320d years back and had numerous issues with the EGR valve and occasionally DPF. Garage put it down to the hour+ of my life I was wasting daily sat at the Kearsley spur crawling onto the M60 to get into town. Hybrid or even full EV if you're doing sub 200 miles per day and can charge at home. Echo the thoughts around Volvo - lovely place to sit (and you can watch YouTube on the infotainment screen if you're genuinely not moving). The S60 is a lovely looking thing if you want to stay away from SUVs.

Mean_Wheel1393

Merc E300h would do the trick.

BarryF123

Old Volvo, or if you can find one a Peugeot 405.

Whitedrvid

Bentley Continental R with a driver in fromt and you in the back. Hoof difficult can it be?

Seymourdough

I do the same drive as OP and had a IS300h itā€™s a great car, will definitely do the trick. Iā€™ve also had a Rav 4 (5th Gen) Nice comfy seats, good driving position plenty of space, traffic jam assist (stops, starts and steers itself in traffic) is a game-changer!! 50+mpg easy from that 2.5 hybrid, would highly recommend. Toyota/Lexus aside id be looking at a something from Volvo or Mercedes.

dragonmermaid4

I can't speak for every car but my Tesla Model 3 is pretty great. When I'm stuck in traffic I just turn on auto steer and it does all the crappy slow traffic driving for me and I can relax.

Impressive_Chart_153

Rolls Royce are pretty comfortable.

randem_mandem

I recently got a Merc GLC 2020 and have spent upwards of 10 hours stuck in traffic in the last couple of weeks and cannot fault it. Seat is comfy and has 1million adjustment options plus heating, sound system is great, air con keeps everything nicely ambient - honestly nicer to sit on than my sofa. Automatic isnā€™t perfect but is good enough it doesnā€™t trouble me. Would recommend.

Jamescg1972

Didnā€™t find the Ford edge that comfy. My wife said the CRV we had before the edge was better for long periods.

Untraveled

Same situation where I had to cover half of the M60 through rush hour, initially had a 2015 Polo which I got tired of, got a BMW G20 3 Series and it was the world of difference, I couldnā€™t wait to be stuck in traffic!

Jitsu_apocalypse

Lexus, Jaguar, Volvo

Mag01uk

Tesla. Self driving means you donā€™t have to do anything whilst in the traffic, sit back and listen to your music or whatever

moonlittidals

definitely bias towards lexus but another +1 for them! my lexus nx is by a million miles the comfiest and also the most enjoyable drive iā€™ve ever experienced. everything about it is luxury, comfort and well designed

effinG123

BMW with technology package (with driver assist professional) and comfort package. Had this on a 5 and 7 series and learned to enjoy stop start traffic. Drives itself while you chill out. Can also get it on the 3 series.. You may prefer a hybrid which will crawl silently on electric mode.

anon_77_

Lexus ES!!

elliomitch

VW Phaeton

freefallade

I've recently got an xc90 t8 and it's by far the nicest place to sit I've ever owned. Comfy, spacious. Good sound system and air-conditioning. Nice and high so can usually see what's going on clearly. Plug in hybrid too so can run entirely electric for all my daily school drop off, shopping, walking dog to woods etc.

B1unt420

I never thought Iā€™d say this. I got a courtesy car while my A6 is having some work done and they gave me a Mazda CX-5, Iā€™m genuinely mind blown how good the features, the drive itself and how comfortable the car is to be in. It ticks your easy controls box as it is a touch screen but I havenā€™t touched it once (it basically has the same system as older Audiā€™s and BMWā€™s with the single wheel that rotates next to your gear stick) Heads-up display which is really good. Theyā€™re hybrids. Has all the new features like lane moving notification, adaptive cruise control so will make your motorway miles easy enough!

Far_Procedure_1918

In the back of a 2006 maybach 62

takesthebiscuit

Jeez I feel for you, I had 3 years commuting Crewe to Salford it was horrible The train was my choice of luxury when I was fed up of the car

joost00719

Probably the passenger seat mate

nitrojunky24

Car with the best adaptive cruise that can actually come to complete stop and take off with you having to touch a thing

HandwrittenHysteria

Sooooā€¦

CarpeCyprinidae

With extensive queueing you definitely need a hybrid system The situation where an engine is running for extended time at tickover is bad for the vehicle lifetime - you've got minimal oil pressure, which is bad for wear, temperature constantly cycling from 88C to 102C when the cooling fan kicks in is not great for the oil lifespan, and the cooling system cycling between sub-100C and 100+C means the hydrostatic pressures on the radiators, pipes and gaskets are also pulsating on and off, which is bad for their longevity Better by far to do this section crawling along on a small electric motor, using no power when stationary, engine off and accumulating no wear and making no excess heat at all

Foxcub94

Volvo S80 D4 manual. The best car I've ever owned. I have a 65 plate one with higher mileage, a bit rough around the edges, basic look/body spec to it too. Plus a 2016 Focus ST and I'm considering chopping in both to get a top spec S80 and be done with cars for a while. (bought a house yay...)

Howard1981

I love Rover 75 Connoisseur SE, I have upgraded the Highline navigation system with a digital TV tuner so itā€™s perfect.

Open_Bug_4196

I havenā€™t driven it but I say the Lexus RZ450e is likely to be in the podium without going to the rolls Royce etc, given the good ride quality of Lexus + being electric

Coops92

Any Volvo with adaptive cruise control would be a winner for me. They generally have great seats.

WaitForItLegenDairy

+1 for the Lexus....or S-class Merc or a 7-series Beemer..... Designed for "captains of industry" so bells, whistles, trimmings, and a very comfortable place to sit as one of the great unwashed going fecking nowhere in the traffic

Jellybeans12345678

Mercedes maybach gls

Imaginary-Coach-6968

Tesla M3

MykeyB118

BMW 7 series. I've been in Jags and Lexus and the 7 beats them all. By miles. I could sit in that car all day and get out feeling as fresh as when I got in. Omg I miss the comfort of that car.

Smanderson117

2001-2006 Volvo S60 leather seats are the best armchairs I've ever commuted in

SirTrick6639

Any car with stop/go traffic jam assist with steering assist. Itā€™s so much less tiring being stuck in traffic when the car is driving itself for you. Rented a new Passat plug in hybrid with those features recently, it made my commute a dream

SurrealAle

Get yourself a Toyota Alphard... Big, spacious, luxury automatic, hybrid option. Coming from a happy owner, it's my answer for anyone's car needs šŸ˜‚

Keycuk

I think an alphard will be my next car, just annoying that hardly any of them have cruise control

SurrealAle

Mine came with an aftermarket cruise control, it's OK though a bit laggy, I do miss adaptive cruise control from my previous car

Keycuk

Iā€™m gonna hunt for a 3.5v6 vellfire with cruise

iMatthew1990

Now this is going to sound strange. But many eons ago I had a Renault megane. The big butt boot version, you know the one. It was a dynamique spec and had armrests and honestly the most comfortable chair Iā€™ve ever sat in. Everything else about it was pure dog waste. Like so poor, Put me off French cars for life . But those seats were magnifique! Not that this will help what youā€™re asking I just thought Iā€™d share that.

ditpditp

Sack off the traffic and get Maxi Scooter like the Suzuki Burgman, Yamaha Tmax, or Honda ADV.

SlowRs

Range Rover. I can drive for 20+ hours straight and get out feeling alright at the other end.

useittilitbreaks

Something automatic. And yes, itā€™s as bad or worse than you think itā€™ll be. My advice, from someone who did this and then underestimated just how bad the commute would be: donā€™t, unless itā€™s a prestigious job or thereā€™s the option to change your start/finish times, or wfh for a lot of the time. Edit: just to add insult to injury if itā€™s a 9-5 youā€™ll be stuck in traffic closer to 2 hours daily as it can easily take 30 minutes just to get from Trafford to the m602 slip in the evening rush.

HandwrittenHysteria

Yeah I know what youā€™re saying. I used to commute Bolton to Stockport for four years pre-covid and nearly had a nervous breakdown at one point. Iā€™m kind of being swayed by the money but itā€™s probably clouding how stupid the move is. I have an interview next week so I can cull it then if need be

DrRajMussalah

V70/S80/XC90 are hard to beat
