I think it’s Steve Kline. If you look at the tip of his nose and compare it to other Steve Kline photos, it looks like him.
When I first saw your photo, I immediately thought Steve Kline. Although his hat is awfully clean. lol.
Maybe your photo isn’t really 2005? Or maybe he was there for a 2004 NL championship ceremony or something?
[Box Score of Game played on Friday, July 15, 2005 at Busch Stadium II (baseball-almanac.com)](https://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=200507150SLN)
This was Pujols only walk off in 2005 - bottom of 13th. Seems like that would be something OP would remember?
He had 2x in 2004 at Busch, so that seems more likely (and Klein was on the roster.)
Pujols hit a walk off homer against Houston in this game in 2003: [https://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=200309200SLN](https://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=200309200SLN) So it seems like you got all the facts right, just wrong year.
I talked to my mom about this photo yesterday. Made sure the year was right and it was. Last summer of Busch. I’ve thought it was Kline for years until I did some research.
If that’s not Steve Kline, then it’s his clone. No disrespect to your mom, but I think she’s mistaken regarding the year.
Edit: I just went through the 2005 Cards roster on BREF, and there wasn’t anyone who I thought looked like the player pictured.
I think everybody agrees it is Steve Kline. So if it is 2005, the only explanation I can think of is he was there for something to do with the 2004 NL Championship.
My personal opinion is this picture is earlier than 2005. You might have been at the July 2005 game. But the picture was probably taken at an earlier game.
I did a game where fans got to line up around the field and shake hands with the players before the game. That was in 2001, I believe, just in case you could be way off. Kline was definitely on the team then, and the most memorable part was McGwire getting ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the third inning. But it doesn't sound like you are way off.
Just to check yourself, I feel like we should be focusing more on the patch on the sleeve with a 25 on it. It looks like a commemorative patch. They won the WS in 1982, and so they might have done a 25th anniversary season in 2006, but that's too late to be Kline.
My gut when I saw this is that it hard to be pre-2005. And it does look like Leo Messi, and comparing to internet images of Kline, I can see it.
That’s clearly a McGwire 25 hat the OP is wearing, not an official Cardinals patch or anything. Perhaps a giveaway of some kind? It even looks like there could be a “61” (or something) sublimated in the #25. There was a cottage industry of garbage McGwire merchandise in the late 90s though.
Ohhhhh man, he is bending down to take a picture with a kid. So this is no evidence at all. All this time I thought he was crouching into teammates and that that was a sleeve coming to an end before baring the arm.
And oh, I had the McGwire and Sosa watches sold by JC Penney that I was sure would be worth a million dollars by now.
I was also trying to figure out the patch. Is there any chance that 5 is actually a 0 and this is 2002?
Edit: You can see the same hat [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnYdu0OfAms&t=7085s) in this game footage.
> I was also trying to figure out the patch.
I think what looks like Kline's sleeve patch is actually the hat that OP was wearing. Like a McGwire/#25 hat or something like that.
I don't know. You and I both see a 5. It looks like it curls up and stops at the bottom left and then the right side looks like the right side of a 5. I would entertain a 3 and it being a player commemoration, but I cannot think of a major Cardinal with a 23 for a number who would have been honored.
Could the patch be a 25 for McGwire and a smaller 65 inside of it? He hit 65 in '99, so they could have done a patch in 2000. But: (A) Why would they do that for a guy who had already broken the record with a higher total? (B) Kline didn't join until 2001.
Is it possible you went to different games in different years and this picture was taken on a different day even though you attended the Pujols walkoff game (which I also did!)? I also don't think they used this hat style anymore by 2005. They had moved to a finer mesh on the BP hats by then that didn't have these giant holes.
I am 100% certain this is the game I was at. Playing Houston at home in July with a Pujols walkoff. I’ve spent lots of time on baseball reference making sure.
I just thought about how I no longer could remember what Steve Kline's mug looked like anymore yesterday; all I could picture was something similar to Morris lol..
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
That’s Steve Kline. I met him a handful of times from like 2001-2003 (and got his autograph more than once!) Was super nice and always happy to interact with the fans. Hat is suspiciously clean though!
Steve Kline was the best with fans. Signed balls outside in the parking lot after game, stood and chit chatted with fans before and after games. Even let me try his glove on once. One of my favorites.
Thank you all for the help!! I realized my mom and I were wrong and this was a game from 2003. Thanks for everyone who called me out on it, nice or not. I feel silly for thinking it was the wrong game for so long lol

That’s a *young* Steve Kline with an older New Era meshy batting practice cap on. I would bet just about anything this is from the 2001-2003 era.

I’ve checked 2003 and 2004 and there weren’t any walkoffs against Houston so it has to be this game

He signed a ball for me everytime I went to a game, great guy, he loved the fans
Yes

It is Kline lol why are people second guessing
Your mom is wrong bub

Steve Klein. 100%. While not showcased in this photo, he had an infamous “dirty hat”
That hat had AIDS.
I remember the dirty hat promo they had
Steve Kline. Filthy slider. Filthy hat.
Kline* please learn
>"[Kline\* please learn](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/021/665/DpQ9YJl.png)"
Nah I’m tired of “Schildt” and “McGuire” etc. Learn to spell already.
Lighten up, Francis
Ha that's great But he prefers psycho
Nah it’s been years of dumbass Cards fans, tired of it. Learn to spell
I honestly thought Shildt had a ‘c’ in his name. TIL
Who remembers the Steve Kline giveaway hat? Fake stains and no button.
I stood in line around the walkways of Busch Memorial with my sister for over an hour to get that signed!
Actually still have mine.
I was at that game. Too old for the giveaway, but it was hilarious seeing how popular it was.
Wish I could find one to buy online. He was a gem.
My first reaction was Steve Kline. It was pretty instant.
I'm surprised how clean his hat is!
HEY!, it’s Enrico Palazzo!
Enrico Palazzo Enrico Palazzo Enrico Palazzo
That's Steve Kline
Wasn’t Steve Kline the one that flipped tony larussa off?
Y’all need to learn how to spell “Kline” lol
Clein?
Clyne
That’s Lionel Messi
Close. It’s Kobe Bryant.
I thought Steve Kline immediately
Look for the missing button on his cap to be sure

They definitely had the hat for a number of years, didn't they? I can picture McGwire in that, even in his heyday.
Yeah but the mesh was only from like the late nineties to 2003ish iirc. The same style of hat in 2005 was solid fabric.
[https://patchcollection.com/collections/st-louis-cardinals](https://patchcollection.com/collections/st-louis-cardinals) And this has led me nowhere.

Is it a digital photo? If so, you can check the date if you know how.
Absolutely Steve Klein
Kline*
Well I guess I’m old. Kline was so fun to watch.
His hat is so clean
Daniel Murphy

Pretty sure that is my Uncle Stewart.
It’s Kline but there’s also a slight resemblance to newly elected Cardinals HOFer Matt Morris
If you post the entire photo, we might have a better shot at the date. Any other players could help, ballpark features, scoreboards, etc.
It’s Kline. If you visit the cardinals museum, you’ll see his swampy looking hat
Cardinal 2005 40 man roster https://baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/roster.php?y=2005&t=SLN
That's gotta be the cleanest his hat as ever been.
Looks a little like Alan Benes.
Definitely Steve Kline
That’s Steve Kline. I met him a handful of times from like 2001-2003 (and got his autograph more than once!) Was super nice and always happy to interact with the fans. Hat is suspiciously clean though!
Hat looks too clean to be Steve Kline.
Steve Kline was the best with fans. Signed balls outside in the parking lot after game, stood and chit chatted with fans before and after games. Even let me try his glove on once. One of my favorites.

Eli Manning
You beat me to it, lol.
That’s Quin Gon Jin
7/15/05 was a Friday, not a Sunday. Someone has their dates wrong.
Did you read the parenthesis
Regardless that is Steve Kline, so someone has their dates wrong.
