I like Kombis, that is horrid. 215k would get you a pretty nice modern RV.

root-doot-doot

It’s ruined, is what it is

chuk2015

For starters a standard combi engine has enough trouble just going up a regular hill, so I doubt this thing would have an original engine

theoriginalzads

Edit: it’s a Subaru engine. https://www.retrorv.com/products/perth-north-wa?_pos=1&_fid=fddf0da1b&_ss=c Seen this ad. Watched long enough that I noticed it had an auto controlled by push buttons. So the transmission isn’t stock so I’d very much say the engine isn’t either. I’m inclined to think maybe it’s a VW (or clone) front end bolted to a different chassis.

Wangdosh

Fully built EJ257?

Apprehensive_You6909

From what I gather they use a subaru transmission too but it's all mounted backwards so the gears are custom made to fix this

someguycalledmatt

From memory (of working on air-cooled VW stuff) there was a company that made a reverse diff for the Subaru gearbox, so the whole unit could just be fabricated into a Kombi. With the 2.5L it worked pretty well, but I feel like the camper back on this is probably asking too much of the n/a engine, let alone the VW chassis.. and god forbid you ever need repairs done in the middle-of-nowhere in your custom VW/Subaru/RV thing 😂

scraverX

Plus the fact they look to be using only the "front" drive section of the AWD OR - something rarer... the box from a front drive only Suby... [https://www.retrorv.com/cdn/shop/files/Retro\_RV\_-\_media\_with\_text\_1500\_x\_1500\_11.jpg?v=1671177622&width=1400](https://www.retrorv.com/cdn/shop/files/Retro_RV_-_media_with_text_1500_x_1500_11.jpg?v=1671177622&width=1400)

carpe_scrotum_

Subaru engine swap

Dr_Dickfart

Head gasket

monsteraguy

Probably a Subaru or a 911 engine

FuzzyCantAim

For that price you’d hope so

-StRaNgEdAyS-

Man... They did that to a splitty...

phdindrip

It was probably 90% rusted out, I doubt they chopped up a nice splitty

confusedham

I’ve seen a few for sale that are cheap, which means it’s only a scam or they are getting reman imitation bodies and sticking them on different chassis

theskywaspink

Usually a split window would fetch a decent price but not when you’ve fucked it this much.

Scott_4560

I actually walked past it about 15 minutes ago and have seen it doing reasonable speeds on the Bruce Hwy.

weightyboy

This vehicle was on "classics for a cause" which is a charity that helps veterans. I think this is the winners trying to flog it on.

cmad182

I thought it looked familiar.

LOW-LIFE_CSR

Oh I thought it still was on Classics for a Cause! They didn’t keep it long ! Edit: just had a look it’s a different one there’s no sleeper over the cab on the CFAC give away

Spicey_Cough2019

"How much do you think this kombi is worth" "Well the kombi is like $40k second hand, maybe whack $60k worth of modifications to it and we'll call it $100k" "$215k it is" "But I sai..." "You heard the man $215k!"

kernpanic

Split window combis are more like 90k on their own now.

LOW-LIFE_CSR

Yeah but you’re only getting a third of one

No-Wonder6102

Have you bought a caravan new lately? The amount of work doesn't really change a lot due to size materials are the close to the smallest bit of the quote. However it doesnt really justify the margin they have on it.

confusedham

I would much rather a couple of Chinese RVs from alibaba for circa 60k. for that price I could also fill them with lots of rectal electro stimulation probes and steam mops that aliexpress says I need. https://preview.redd.it/58qwz5x706uc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13cf565a8d9946858a647844a87cf56d84129ceb

morris0000007

I'm putting my order in now!!! What could go wrong!!!

confusedham

Friend, we can go into business together selling alibaba unregulated campers. Each one comes with your choice of anal electrode stimulator and untested electrical products .

morris0000007

Sounds great!!

jayessmcqueen

It’s ugly as fuck and it’s probably a scam, but it’s possible that it cost them a small fortune to build it and have engineers sign off on it for legal road use. Paying professionals to modify a vehicle is not cheap by any means, plus throw in a new engine (as the standard engine is realistically garbage and massively underpowered), custom interiors, etc etc and it starts to really add up. Not justifying this at all, and I recommend people avoid these “raffles”. But this vehicle all up may have cost them a small fortune to make. If for some reason I stupidly entered this and actually won, first thing I’d do is try and sell it for half as much and buy something actually good.

Spare_Concentrate_23

Scam scam scam.... stay away

plantmanz

It's from Smirnoff so not a scam just a competition

telemeister74

That’s not a ‘75 model, it is a split window kombi - the original type 2 made between 1950 and 67 I think. Those are relatively hard to find ( particularly the Ute version, which is one of the coolest, with the Alpine running a close second for me) and they are very expensive. $150k is not out of the realm of possibility. Personally, putting the camper on the back totally ruins it. If it were a 75 then no way it is $215k unless they went overboard with the resto - easy to do.

spodenki

That's the El Stupido model!

Possible-Carpenter72

Any value that once had has been completely eroded. I hate the Australian way of saying "Valued at". By whom? It's ridiculous that anyone can just say that. I value that at $10k. In fact, I wouldn't want the inconvenience of this monstrosity. These types of promotions should be made to get an independent evaluation.

denistone

So true. Hills, wind, spare parts and fuel consumption would cancel out any valuation based on $ value.

LogicalWindow5570

Hashtag vanlife 🙄

Unhappy-camp3r

Depends on what’s inside but I reckon you could get close to this cost to fully restore, modify and fit out something like this. People do not realise how expensive a full resto is worth even without the modifications. Is it worth it? Fuck no it’s not! You could buy a pretty sweet new rv for that cost that will actually do the speed limit but honestly 200k might not be as far off as you think it is.

Samc66

Ridiculous price.

Bludgell

the T1 splitty in the picture may well be worth 200k. but the scamminess jumps out at me when they say '1975'. the model you see in the picture went out of production in 1967.

Psychlonuclear

Looks like it could fall over if someone sneezes. Also is this another of those "Win this classic car" ads that never seem to run out of classic cars?

Best-Brilliant3314

‘Cos they had to invent a way for a combi to drive without an engine

ChapterGato

retro RV, legitimate conversions. they start with a pretty bad cab and build the rest, all subi, gearbox conversions too, normally not sold as vehicles, must purchase a franchise. look them up, the cars and company are legit, this screenshot is probably a scam. The same company does the kombi kegs too in AU. All franchises. Starting now from complete repro panels and chassis. Not my cup of tea however great engineering.

campbellsimpson

The "Retro RV" badge is probably the least cool part of this already pretty uncool build.

[deleted]

I'm heartbroken by this RV, They have ruined a classic. I don't think it's a scam however, this charity has been doing this a long time, often the prize is a classic car that has been fully restored. If I had 215k I could buy an awesome brand new RV, and I would definitely rather that RV than this one.

PurpleDogAU

You really don't want to see the books on these "charity" raffles. Very charitable to those that run them, ie, the guy who has put a multi-million dollar McLaren into lounge room of the penthouse apartment he bought for many multiple millions. These lotteries are a scam designed to seperate the stupid from their money in the most tax free way possible.

AussieGreaseMonkey

I dont understand the people who defend that dude. Any facebook posts about him are full of people people defending him etc.. The man is a Con artist lmao people just refuse to see it.

[deleted]

This raffle is called "Classics For a Cause" and although people do make money from it and even draw a wage as a result, money does also go to the cause itself. I volunteer my time with elderly people every Thursday, and I have seen elderly war veterans get things from groups that Classics for a Cause supports. Now any raffle could be considered a scam, they will probably sell 2-3 million dollars worth of tickets for a camper worth 215k. Someone will win it, and that someone could be you, but it's gambling and a donation in one, I wouldn't count on actually winning. But that is like any other raffle.

BonezOz

BWS is "giving" one away too. It's not a splitty, but is valued at $141k. Considering that I've seen fully restored splitty Kombi's for over $200k, so a restored and converted one could easily fetch around that amount. As for the OP's post, without context I'd imagine that this competition is a scam.

NeopolitanBonerfart

I imagine that a big part of the valuation would be the uniqueness, and scarcity of it. Is it worth that much on the open market? Probably not, but there may be some people who would be willing to pay a premium for something that is fairly unique. Then again, who knows. Could just be a number they pulled out of the proverbial that they’ve had someone sign off on to justify the price.

droppedmeatpie69

Supply and demand. The supplier is usually just a shop with x amount of staff and can only create x amount per year so they have to run a business and still make profit.

theoriginalzads

Those interested in what this is. This company builds and rents them. This page has some of the specs on them. Subaru engine in the one based in WA. https://www.retrorv.com/products/perth-north-wa?_pos=1&_fid=fddf0da1b&_ss=c

Weary_Patience_7778

It potentially cost them $215k to restore it and get it to that state. The fact that it cost that much, doesn’t make it *worth* that much. For an item to have value, someone needs to be willing to pay. If you don’t have a buyer, it’s worth diddly squat.

morris0000007

And my slightly used Holden cruze is worth $ 350,000!!! You want a ticket??? 5 bucks a ticket or 5 for 20!! Limited tickets! Dm me!!

Earlohim

Actually a fairly reasonable estimate if it is fully restored with no shortcuts but I somehow doubt it. Also it’s a 75 which isn’t as desirable atm. Kombis on [Carsales.com](https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/results?q=%28C.Make.Volkswagen._.Model.Kombi%20Transporter.%29&sort=Price) <~~

dullcoopy

Seen one of these parked near Marrickville - looks quite smart but in no way worth $215k if that’s what they are claiming.

ThatGuyJimFromWork

It's a scam

fuel_altered

Why a scam? Fake winners?

Public-Total-250

This kind of one usually actually has a winner, but the vehicle is a classic case of "looks good from far, but is far from good" and the winners sign a contract saying they can't talk negatively about it.

Public-Total-250

And that massive 'value' is some ridiculously inflated number given to it by... Someone?

fuel_altered

For sure.

Healthy_Fix2164

It’s not really a scam but it’s done under some fairly false pretences, most are marketed as some sort of lottery and most people think they are for a good cause which isn’t the case (just making money for profit. They’ll say only xthousand entries when in reality they count one person buying ten tickets as a “single entry” and the perceived value is blown way out of proportion.

No_Move8238

Split screens stopped in 1968, so that's fishy, but seriously, how is 70hp going to move that bulk and weight at highway speeds. It's a death trap.

oztrailrunner

They have a subaru engine in them. They are all over nsw South coast as hire vehicles for $200 a night, 3 night min.

No_Move8238

OK, they should get along ok then.👍

Key-Birthday-9047

Last year they were only worth $150k apparently. https://classicsforacause.com.au/1971-vw-kombi-camper/

FuzzyCantAim

Inflation is a bitch

Ok_Jellyfish_8848

If you compare those two though. The one valued at 215k has an extra queen bed. Seating for 4 (with seat belts). Is a split windscreen (always worth more) and yeh inflation of probably 30k. There is a bunch for rent nsw south Coast. $2500 for a week. Guess if you can rent it out for even half the year it'd be a money maker

Billyjamesjeff

I’m pretty sure 9/10 of these are scams where the “winner” is always related to the raffle owner.

AnonymousEngineer_

Well kitted our campervans or even caravans can be worth a *lot* of money. Check out how much [this Airstream](https://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/items/details/2019-airstream-international-5-7m-19ft/SSE-AD-16392989/?pageSource=details) is being advertised for, and that isn't even that fancy.

Various-Truck-5115

If i make a sculpture out of wood and then say it's worth 100k. Is it worth a 100k? But I can technically ask what I want for my sculpture. There is a vw combi similar to this in my area. I reckon I could offer 30k for it as it looks hacked together. But, because it's been built this is putting his sculpture price on it.

Gutzstruggler

LDVT60ute

I've seen kombis on carsales, at the most, 40k, never seen an RV kombi. Much prefer the old campervan sort. I don't think these things ever came out like this, unless it's a ute with a slide on camper. I know they made kombi utes. But 1/4 of a million $$$? C'mon!

LDVT60ute

Geez they've shot up in price since I last looked. The one I looked at about a year ago was mint. Maybe I should've bought it lol

Dr_Dickfart

Only an idiot with more money than brains would pay $270,000 for that. Some people just have way too much money and don't know what to do with it so they spend crazy amounts of money on stupid shit.

RobsHemiAustin

Any of you built a car lately...? You might be surprised.
