Yep, if I see mould on bread like that, that loaf is done. I'd rather do without. Also, I'm pretty sure this is how "The Last of Us" started, so no thanks.
Yeah the surface fuzz is just the fruiting body that emerges to spread spores. It means the actual mold has spread within the bread and already occupies the volume of the bread in a fine network of mycelium strands and fibers.
The problem here is if you’re allergic to penicillin this could be bad even cooked or toasted. Otherwise it may not make you sick but just be aware that the bread is propagated with fungus on the inside.
Can confirm.
Allergic to penicillin here and ate a piece of bread that unbeknownst to me had those mycelium strands and fibers. About 3-4 hours later, I was having a full-blown allergic reaction with hives, itching, and tightening of my throat. God bless Benadryl.
Fuck moldy bread.
If u see mold, its late, throw out unless is cheese, molded breads they make a interconnected chain under that mold you wont see, so its best to throw until the loaf is fully mold free and then some to be safe.
>unless is cheese
to clarify hard cheese.
Soft cheeses if there's mold its a goner.
ie. Parmesan with mold? Just cut off the bit with the mold with some extra to make sure its not spread.
Even cheddar you can do it as well.
Cottage Cheese with mold? Dump it.
I'm the same. Ex used to try and trick me which just meant I never trusted him. Also the other day I discovered a moldy peach, threw it out then washed the last one very well. Went to take a bite and I could smell the mold. Told myself I was being daft and took a bite. Blegh! It tasted like mold too. I was sad.
Yeah putting water on food doesn’t get rid of mold or bacteria sadly. Some people still think that but from years of working kitchens and my microbio classes taught me that.
Brown for first course, white for pudding. Brown is savoury, white's the treat. Of course I'm the one who's laughing because I actually love brown toast.
All kidding aside, you need to be really careful with mold. If it’s the bad kind, like on bread, you can’t just heat it and make it safe. You might kill the mold but the toxins it might have created are still there.
Yeah, it's pretty much anything hard is okay, because the mould hasn't spread that far. But still cut off a good bit around, because fungus doesn't come to the surface until it's spread a decent amount.
That's not correct though, that's only the colonies of mould that have gotten big enough to see with the naked eye. The entire loaf will be full of spores and smaller colonies.
Yeah its because by the time you can see the mould, that means its spread a fair amount already. If you're with people who're immunocompromised or similar, don't risk it, some people only got to make the mistake once.
For real. I learned from the BBC documentary on spores, mold and fungi (yes, I know how to party) that if you can see mold on bread, the mold you can’t see can cause significant damage to your liver.
Like how grapefruit is delicious if you simply coat it in sugar first. Then make sure to discard any grapefruit that isn't coated in sugar. Voila! Healthy snack!
I just lay out sticks of celery face up, and pour dressing into the “boats”, and just drink that, toss the celery.
Can’t figure out why I’m gaining weight tho
Hahaha. Just lash a tin of beans and sprinkle of cheese on top and you won’t be able to tell the difference between the two… and have a far better meal at the same time
Oh... it can do. When I was in student halls the toaster in the kitchen had a "frozen bread" button, and it worked like magic, you couldn't tell the difference between fresh and frozen. I wish I'd made a note of what make and model it was. I would have totally bought one on ebay by now.
No, it's the opposite. What to see is essentially a sex organ spreading spores. The real fungus is underneath the bread, or the ground for toadstools etc
the mycelium is really the main body of the fungus, the fuzzy stuff on top is where they release their spores to reproduce. mold, mushrooms, etc. are basically the genitals of fungi. they're all total exhibitionists.
Cutting off moldy parts of cheese is okay, as long as you cut it off a good bit away (and think in 3D space!) from the visible mold. At least an inch (2.5 cm) to be safe, but generally the harder the cheese, the less margin you need to give.
Sir are you suggesting the incredulous notion that it's not a good idea to consume moldy food and that OP is in fact, pardon my scientific terminology, "fucking nuts"?
Is anyone else reading the rest of this thread? It’s unhinged lol.
I can’t believe how many people are in this thread saying it’s okay to eat mold and that any government agency telling you it can be dangerous is “political correctness”.
This is legitimately one of the dumbest threads I’ve ever read on Reddit.
Edit: looks like the mold eaters are downvoting me now lmao.

Not safe to eat mouldy bread. The mould will be spread further than the visible bits https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/can-you-eat-bread-mold#discarding
Edit: if you enjoy eating mouldy bread then continue doing so, just don't complain if you do get ill.
Well, I fully understand that the mould spore you see as a blue blob on the surface of the bread is just the tip of the iceberg and that mould is well established in the bread by this point. no matter what you cut off you will end up eating mould.
What I would like to know, what are the actual health drawbacks of eacting that mould.
Would that not be penicillium mould? so with a bit of jigery pokery could be turned into crude penicillin? Sure, you aint doing that in your kitchen, but what's so bad about consuming that mould, what issues will it cause?
I mean, we all eat mouldy cheese, why is mouldy bread so bad?
Actually, I don't because stilton tastes like somebody ate my foot and shat it back out onto a plate but you get my point.
By mouldy cheese i’m going to assume you mean “blue cheese” and not just “any old cheese that has gone mouldy”. You still should be very careful around the latter, and probably just throw away any soft cheese.
The mould itself is usually not the problem. The problem is that mould produces a variety of toxic substances called “mycotoxins”. The variety of mould found in blue cheese has been specifically cultivated to *not* produce mycotoxins. What you’re doing is like comparing going ice skating on a lake vs ice skating in an ice rink. One of them has been designed, by humans, to be safer so you won’t fall through some weaker ice and drown.
Mycotoxins have a very wide range of health risk depending on the type, concentration, and person. Nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal problems, etc, all the way up to things like lung damage, or even cancer.
My dude. That toast is infested with bacteria and fungus. Those bits are the ones you can see. You even toasted the fungus to get it warmed up and ready to release spores. 2023 and mf's out here eating like it's medieval England. I need a lie down after looking at that so best of luck.
Bread mould is aerial and sporadic, it's never safe to eat bread if any of the other pieces in the bag have mould.
Sorry to say but you've literally ingested mould there
Exactly! I see everyone talking about health implications but... can nobody around here taste and smell it before it even gets to this stage?! The smell and taste of it is gross when it's gone bad and it's usually quite obvious to me before it's even showing up as mould.
Sometimes that smell and taste show up before the best before date too and I just can't eat it, even toasted, if that happens because it's a massive tell-tale that it's gone/going bad. My husband will eat it happily even though a day or so later it'll be riddled with blue spots.
Eugh, hell no. Any sign of mould on anything and it's straight in the bin.
I just freeze bread as soon as I buy it, and just get out the slices I need when I need them. Toast from frozen or defrost in microwave for a sarny.
The mold you see is only the reproductive side of the mold, the mycelium (which you would probably be able to see, it should look like white strands) spreads a lot further out inside of the breaf than just the visible part of the mold and can spread to diffrent slices if they are in contact with eachother, also, once you can see the mold that also means it's releasing spores, so the mold could be at any part of the bread.
For the same reason visible mould is bad for you. You’re eating a live fungus which can spread spores in your lungs, liver, colon, wherever it passes through. You can become very very ill. Visible or not makes no difference.
There are some species of mould that produce mycotoxins as they grow. The part that you see is just the part with the spores, the main body of the fungus is embedded throughout the bread, meaning that those mycotoxins would also be throughout the bread. Without genetic testing, you have no way to know whether your fungus is a dangerous species or a safe one. So just in case, throw it out.
It is not weird but partly stupid. Microscopic roots spread through the whole slice/loaf, so you are still eating mould.
Not all moulds will make you ill, but some can definitely harm a human.
You.... cut it off after toasting it?
Cremation
Kill it with fire.
Cast it in the fyre!
Fuck you Elrond
Destroy it!
... no
ISILDURRRR!
Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
Looks like that's what they did
Title was misleading... Mould wasn't cut off bread
What if he cut the bread and then toasted the individual pieces? Didn't think of that now did you
That would be croutons
I love Reddit exclusively for people like you
Not sure I’d wanna risk the rest of it, at that point. Op playing fast and loose.
Fast and loose is what his shit will be like after eating that.
Yep, if I see mould on bread like that, that loaf is done. I'd rather do without. Also, I'm pretty sure this is how "The Last of Us" started, so no thanks.

Ok so mouldy bread. Fuck not eat. Understood.
Instructions unclear, dick stuck in toaster!
And that, kids, is how we invented the hot dog.
i would in such a case own 99% frozen bread. Just thaw before eating. Would that work? Or do you limit bread?
If u see mold, its late, throw out unless is cheese, molded breads they make a interconnected chain under that mold you wont see, so its best to throw until the loaf is fully mold free and then some to be safe.
>unless is cheese to clarify hard cheese. Soft cheeses if there's mold its a goner. ie. Parmesan with mold? Just cut off the bit with the mold with some extra to make sure its not spread. Even cheddar you can do it as well. Cottage Cheese with mold? Dump it.

For feta or worse.

I was hoping the second peach would be fine. It looked it and had no mold on it but ugh that taste is unmistakable
Had to scroll way too far to find this comment!
Warm spores are tasty spores!
Top comment for me lol
Not toasted, incinerated!
The decision to only remove the mould *after* toasting it is an interesting one

Boil it, mash it, stick it in a stew?
What did Stew have to say about that?
Po-tay-toes!

Right, Corrigan.
Been cheeky though, gone for two slices of dessert.
Shit the bed

Toast - hard Bread - soft I see zero problems with OPs approach
ah, thats why he toasted it first, to make it hard.
Can I try this instead of viagra?
That's not correct though, that's only the colonies of mould that have gotten big enough to see with the naked eye. The entire loaf will be full of spores and smaller colonies.
The link places bread in the do not eat column
the spores are everywhere anyway, that's how the mold appeared, I'm more concerned with the growing fungus that produces aflatoxins etc
It's still spread and likely full of spores but not visible to the eye
As someone who’s had the worst kind of food poisoning when in Japan once….take no chances at all
I got terrible food poisoning in Cambodia which still gives me some trouble, years later.
That'll be the tapeworm you haven't discovered yet.
I had it from chicken one campylobacteriosis. I was shitting and vomiting for a week straight.
Shit. I always cut the mould off bread. Still alive though, so that’s a negative
Yeah, so not bread then. But if I toast it first, does that now count as a hard food?
My mum used to try to get me to cut around it but the rest of the bread just never tasted right to me.
I find it weird you didn't cut it off before toasting it...
Out of sight, out of mind.
Out of sight, in the stomach
I have a question: why did you toast it before you cut the mould off?
He seasons the toaster with mould spores
Fancy mushrooms with toast
Just freeze it before it gets to that stage
Pop the loaf in the freezer straight after bring it back from the shop.
I can’t believe all the people on here who seem to think that toast from frozen bread is as good as normal toast, it’s not, it never tastes as good.
The trick is to use enough butter that that's all you taste
Like how grapefruit is delicious if you simply coat it in sugar first. Then make sure to discard any grapefruit that isn't coated in sugar. Voila! Healthy snack!
I see you too are familiar with the "salad is merely a vehicle for delivering salad dressing" school of thought

Who ISN'T of this school of thought?
Also the "chicken nuggets are sauce spoons" school
Tastes better than moldy bread.
It's fucking toast, not Wagu beef. Who cares if its slightly not as good.
Hahaha. Just lash a tin of beans and sprinkle of cheese on top and you won’t be able to tell the difference between the two… and have a far better meal at the same time
Toast has a limited palate exactly. Just a carrier for other things. If u want good toast, make your own bread.
Spoken like a person that never toasted their bread just right
as a single person I freeze the loaf and eat it throughout the month. I never noticed a difference.
Oh... it can do. When I was in student halls the toaster in the kitchen had a "frozen bread" button, and it worked like magic, you couldn't tell the difference between fresh and frozen. I wish I'd made a note of what make and model it was. I would have totally bought one on ebay by now.
Doesn’t every toaster have a defrost option?
This is me. Previously frozen, toasted from frozen, or even from the fridge... It just changes things.
I reckon toast tastes *better* when it’s from frozen bread.
Same, if you use good, thick bread it ends up with a nice golden crispy outside with a soft, hot inside
If you can see mould, there’s already mould growing throughout the bread - cutting it off doesn’t really help.
Exactly. The mold has "roots" essentially.

No one gonna draw attention to the two bits of cremated bread with cappuccino froth spread on them?
OP hasn't confirmed which bit they are eating, maybe they don't like burnt toast.
I'm not surprised that someone who torches their bread to ash would also eat mould sandwiches.
Looks like not very much peanut butter and butter as well
its weird to do it so late in the process.
Are you not watching The Last of us?
There's only one course of action. The Indonesian Government must bomb his house to prevent the spread!
I’m not endorsing this action, but 12 people have. I’m just saying…

Ah, it's like when it only causes cancer in California.
Technically this is right but not all mould is the same. Some are unpleasant and sum can cause foodborne illness.
Get a new loaf
Someone told me that visible mould is like the flowers of a plant and you just can't see the rest of the mould plant...
This is the best, easiest to understand comment.
This. And also worth noting that it’s not the mould itself that’s harmful. It’s the mycotoxins it (already) produced throughout the bread.
Not safe. Back in the day, it was common practice due to money and lack of understanding, these days we know it to be unsafe to do so.
Well, I fully understand that the mould spore you see as a blue blob on the surface of the bread is just the tip of the iceberg and that mould is well established in the bread by this point. no matter what you cut off you will end up eating mould. Some of you really concern me
Gross unless you’re having issues financially- but still. No. That’s not safe.
Even if you have financial issues, you are going to give yourself more with eating mouldy bread.
Dead people don’t have any issues.
Well it just passes thw financial burden on to someone else.
Not if the other person also eats mouldy bread.
You may have hit upon the solution to our ongoing societal woes. But we're gonna need a lot of bread.
Check the tescos bin, but that's usually fresh maybe let it sit a week.
Gross, very gross…not gonna lie….
Exactly! I see everyone talking about health implications but... can nobody around here taste and smell it before it even gets to this stage?! I think I just threw up a little
Apparently not good to eat mouldy bread, whole things contaminated. We just can't see it yet
There’s some wrong un’s on this sub
What you see is just the tip of the iceberg
Someone give me the skinny on why invisible mould is bad for you. Not saying it isn't, would just be interested to know the science.
I had the same question. Just looked it up and seems there's a link to liver cancer.
That escalated quickly
That's fucking vile
I know, who fucking cremates toast like that.
It is not weird but partly stupid. Microscopic roots spread through the whole slice/loaf, so you are still eating mould. Not all moulds will make you ill, but some can definitely harm a human.
