The Fall

Richard Dawson
Edit: Here’s a taste of Richard Dawson if you haven’t heard anything of his: [Two Halves](https://youtu.be/NkSvn23fbAg?si=d6x8ohdEE75Egz8_)
Good call on The Bonzo's. There's a good Viv Stanshall biography called Ginger Geezer, if you're interested. I only put the Bonzo's on occasionally but it's really the definitive sound of unfiltered daftness for daft's sake.
The Fall is a must for all humans (& most other living things) from any where /when.
Why no mention of Throbbibg Gristle, seems odd to only mention GPO/PTV. Also for the uninitiated TG & PTV can be extremely transgressive (child murder, gore, nazi imagery etc) is ultra NSFW & not for thosebof a delicate sensibility.
If the aim is just for pop-novelty songs a la Wurzels then Shutleworths alter-ego Jilted John is a good call as is HMHB.
Also Bernard Cribbins - https://youtu.be/r5XX9LX2es4
& not to mention The Laughing Gnome by obscure no-hoper David Jones 😉
John Shuttleworth is one of those acts that I struggle to see how anyone finds him entertaining. I’m a big comedy fan and can usually get that people find someone entertaining that I don’t, but I genuinely feel like I’m missing something with him because I just can’t see it at all.
I had a quick Google because I had no idea, but turns out:
> From 1979 to 1984, Dunn starred as Charlie "Grandad" Quick in a children's television show titled Grandad, although the series did not use the song as the theme tune.
Hah! This reminds me of the link between inane children's TV in the UK and simultaneously the celebration of the heroin culture in the alt arts Manhatten scene. . . . .
Bassist Herbie Flowers wrote the 'Grandad' tune for Clive Dunn and also the legendary bass line of "Walk on thd Wild Side" for Lou Reed.
Older redditors may remember this bit of musical doggerel that I appear to be hanging on to:
"If you've got a song,
He'll conduct and sing along (boop-de-boop)
Playing the pianer
In the strangest manner
The words are right but the tune's all wrong"
Pum-te-pum... "It's grandad - Charlie Quick!"
Played by Clive Dunn, the youngest member of the Dad's Army cast, doing broadly the same bit for a child audience.
Who's that walking down the street? Bandy legs, educated feet. Happy smile, now ain't that sweet, it's Grandad, Charlie Quick.
Written by Bob Block, who also did Rentaghost.
I saw them at Teesside Poly… They played to a backing cassette and when they finished they rewound it and played the exact same set again! Double your money’s worth.
The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, a smorgasbord of spiffing songs:
Intro Outro
The Canyons of Your Mind - including the GOAT guitar solo.
Bernard Cribbins - Right Said Fred
This'll probably get lost in the weeds, but I used to work with a guy called Robin Holland. He was a drummer for a band The Very Things who were delightfully weird but definitely obscure.

The Goodies.
Tony Hawks had a comedy hit in the 80s called Stutter Rap. In the 00s someone bet he couldn't have another top 20 hit. He wrote about it in One Hit Wonderland.
Listen with headphones. The lyrics are brilliantly British.

Delighted to see this at #2 on the list. Hardcore gangsta rappers from Newport. What’s not to like. Also, Maggot is now a financial advisor.

Two Halves is such a class song, evokes such strong feelings and I've never even been in a football team

Good shout on Psychic TV. The Orchids might be one of the most beautiful songs
Richard Dawson is my favourite songwriter of the last 20 years. Every song is brilliant and takes me somewhere new.

I had a cassette tape with this and other gems on it growing up. Jake the Peg and Grandad come to mind.
Obviously we don't talk about Jake the Peg any more, but was that the theme tune to the tv show Grandad?
I had a quick Google because I had no idea, but turns out: > From 1979 to 1984, Dunn starred as Charlie "Grandad" Quick in a children's television show titled Grandad, although the series did not use the song as the theme tune.

Ian Lavendar was 24 on Dad's Army. Clive Dunn? 19. Had a very hard paper round growing up.
I think i had the same tape. It also had on it I'm a Pink Toothbrush and My Boomerang Won't Come Back.
Don't think we're allowed to mention Jake the Peg anymore as Rolf was a wrong un.
