I agree with her decisions, I like the contrast. Everything the same color would have looked too matchy-matchy.
Anyways, you did really amazing work, it looks fantastic!
Nobody else seems to agree with your wife so I'm chiming in lol
I like the dark stain a lot better, it raises the eye off the floor and towards the features, that combined with the white walls makes the room look bigger. Natural wood floors are cool in isolation but if I'm in a bathroom that's not what I am interested in. It'll also protect the floor which is pretty essential in bathrooms.
She was 100% correct imo, the light wood looked like it had mould in the context of a bathroom. Outside of the bathroom the light wood / black grain look would have been fine, but it looks grim in the bathroom so I'm 100% on board with making it darker.
What an incredible upgrade! Really nicely done. I'm with your wife on the stain, the darker floor sets off the natural wood of the other furniture nicely. Love the plants too!
I could have been worse. I once bought a house that weirdly had brand new sheet vinyl flooring laid down in a small box room.
It was not until; we moved in we noticed a stink in that room and I lifted the vinyl. Lets just say we found out the previous owners they kept the family dog locked in that room all day while they were out at work 😒
You could not get a playing card between the floorboards due to the shit that had compacted between them!
Full hazmat gear and some weeks later all floorboards removed and new ones laid down.
Ours is the same. Victorian house and it's a converted third bedroom.
Rather that than having a downstairs bathroom like the neighbours. Their third bedroom is barely big enough to fit a bed in anyway. Would've made a much better bathroom than the single storey flat roofed 'lean to', that would've originally been the outhouses.
We use one as a garden shed, and the other as a 'laundry'. Saves so much space in the kitchen not having to fit the washing machine (and tumble dryer, although we barely us that) in there too.
They were originally the outside loo and the coal shed, going by the amount of clinker we found in one of them when we first bought the house, and the cistern brackets on the wall of the other one.
The coal shed was torn down by the previous owner, but he left the outhouse up. It was taking up too much space in the back “garden”, so I took it down too.
We were nighttime toilet training recently. We are using a child toilet seat with a step, as we have a younger son too who can’t reach to pee standing up, so at night the seat is on, and the older one sits to pee. One time the older one gets up, drowsily stumbles over to the bathroom, gets up on the little step, pulls down his underpants - _forgets to sit down as super sleepy_ - and just unleashes a torrent of piss all over the bathroom while still standing. Thank god for the tiled floor!
Duravit stark 6ltr con-sealed cistern dual flush with damped hinges. Every toilet releases spray, it’s the main reason towel rails rust at toilet level if they are close to one.
Exactly this; it'll look great for the ol' Instagram, but after a year he'll be looking to put tiles down. Could've just used the subfloor for its' intended purpose and saved all that pain!
I love it, looks great, I was kinda hoping the big sink would stay and get some wood surrounds though, it seems sinks have gotten so small you end up touching some part of it while washing your hands these days.
Edit: would like to say the new sink looks nice too though!
The problem with the old sink was the double taps. They barely stuck out over the basin, so everything was hitting the sides just to get wet. And I hated going back and forth between the two just to rinse my hands.
Oh yeah that would annoy me too! I think we had one just like that in my art class back in school around 2008.
I do miss big sinks though, however the new one looks like a nice balance between width and depth.
This one is a decent size actually. I honestly was expecting it to be a little smaller because I bought it online, and you can never really trust the pictures.
Oh god yeah we bought some sinks for our workplace and they are half the size we were expecting them to be, can't even get your hands in to wash without touching the bottom of the sink!
They should have checked the measurements really lol.
I'm going to go against the grain (pun intended) and say that I like the dark wood stain. I'm planning on doing the same to my front room this Summer. Any advice, insights or tips much appreciated.
Advice: don’t! These will have been original period floorboards that now just look like something out of a B&Q catalog. I’d rather people pull up the floorboards and sell them to fund a new floor than do this to them.
Looks great, the floor definitely doesn’t go though, it worked perfectly before staining imo, it’s very dark compared to all of the light wood and white. Real wood floors always seems like a risk with how good modern fake wood floors are, one leak or inconsistent pisser and you may have an issue.
Had anxiety when I saw the toilet roll basket to the right side of the toilet in the penultimate picture. Glad to see it got moved when the sink was done. Room looks great, well done.
I was loving it until the dark stain went on haha, I've got 4 big rooms to do this to in the coming months - did you hire the big sander and edger to do this?
I was so worried that sink was going to remain there, thank god for the last picture!
Looks great btw, must have been a laborious job, but looks worth it!
I’d recaulk around the base of the toilet to clean up the spots the stain got on it. Give it a nice clean finish. Otherwise well done and the space looks great!
Ah I see! Ok noted, thanks. Not that I'll ever do this but at least I know what I can use. My interior design brain likes to remember this boring shite lol
The toilet seat needs to be a closer shade to the final finish of the flooring, it stands out like a sore thumb. I'd have stained the sink unit as well, my gay ass can't deal with the clashing shades.
The seat is actually darker than in the pictures. My wife wanted the sink unit and the dresser opposite the sink to be a lighter color. She was afraid it would be too much dark wood.
I’d definitely shit there.
I thought the first picture was the result 😅
Perfect office space OP
Looks nice, but the natural wood colour went better with the mirror!
Thanks. I thought it looked better with the natural wood too, but the wife wanted the dark wood stain. Gotta keep her happy.
I foresee a load of sanding in your future...
Or they could get a new mirror...
Or a new wife.
She got the mirror and shelf that color to contrast the dark floor.
I agree with her decisions, I like the contrast. Everything the same color would have looked too matchy-matchy. Anyways, you did really amazing work, it looks fantastic!
Aye, but she ever changes her mind and wants them to match I'd go for new mirror over sanding down the floor!
I won’t be sanding the floor again.
Nobody else seems to agree with your wife so I'm chiming in lol I like the dark stain a lot better, it raises the eye off the floor and towards the features, that combined with the white walls makes the room look bigger. Natural wood floors are cool in isolation but if I'm in a bathroom that's not what I am interested in. It'll also protect the floor which is pretty essential in bathrooms.
You can protect the floor without colouring it, so that's neither here nor there.
Chiming in. I agree with her as well. The 'natural' look doesn't look nice and rustic. It looks like 'we're still waiting for the tilers to come'.
I agree but maybe they could stain that wood to match? That could be a good idea
If you’re wondering why the dark stain, the wife wanted it. I was fine with the natural wood finish but I have to keep her happy.
Redo the shelf and mirror with the dark stain one day while she’s away long enough for it to dry. See how long it takes her to notice once she’s back.
I prefer the dark stain finish too.
When you say "dark stain"...?
The ugly dark brown floor
Good choice from the wife. The natural wood looks unfinished and honestly not very nice.
Agreed. Just makes me think of a mate who couldn’t be bothered to finish his renovation’s house
She was 100% correct imo, the light wood looked like it had mould in the context of a bathroom. Outside of the bathroom the light wood / black grain look would have been fine, but it looks grim in the bathroom so I'm 100% on board with making it darker.
Just pop some bleach down the loo mate. Oh you mean the floor...
What an incredible upgrade! Really nicely done. I'm with your wife on the stain, the darker floor sets off the natural wood of the other furniture nicely. Love the plants too!
Thank you. My daughter was afraid to walk on the floor before we stained it. She thought she was going to get a foot full of splinters. 😂
Agreed I think the before looks unfinished. Absolutely adore the new sink
Excellent work, a fine place to plop!
LOL I only initially noticed the first photo and thought "WTF. He is a having laugh!" then I saw the rest. Well done, good job.
I forgot to take a picture of the sheet of vinyl flooring that my mother in law had put down on top of all that hideousness.
I could have been worse. I once bought a house that weirdly had brand new sheet vinyl flooring laid down in a small box room. It was not until; we moved in we noticed a stink in that room and I lifted the vinyl. Full hazmat gear and some weeks later all floorboards removed and new ones laid down.
That sounds terrible. Glad I didn’t have that experience.
The toilet roll is on the holder the right way round so it's a 10/10 from me.
😂
Nice work! Dark wood better!!!
Tastefully rustic! Looks great!
This looks like a living room with a bathroom theme. I’m trying to decide if that’s good or not 🤔
We get comments all the time about the size. Even the plumber who installed the sink said our bathroom is bigger than any of his bedrooms.
I’ve rented flats smaller than that bathroom.
I knocked down the outhouse last summer. We were using it for storage.

Not a great idea having a wood floor in the bathroom.
And if youve a son like mine who pisses everywhere but the bog, that floors gonna take a beating!
Haha that was my first thought!
We were nighttime toilet training recently. We are using a child toilet seat with a step, as we have a younger son too who can’t reach to pee standing up, so at night the seat is on, and the older one sits to pee. Mines 12 - so it gets no better
That’s why we pee pee sitting down (controversial opinion in the UK I know!)
Came here to say the same. Water will seep through the gaps. Tiles are best.
Absolutely. People are obsessed with floor boards, but they are actually subfloor.
You can save the sanding dust to mix and colour a caulking paste that is spread to fill the joints and gaps. Worth a Google.
That looks awful
Won't that cause problems with expansion though?
I was thinking that. I hope OP sealed it all properly or he's gonna have a bad day if anything ever leaks.
Absolutely, even the spray from the flush will cause damp areas around the toilet, let alone the mis directed piss.
Bloody hell, what type of toilet do you have?
Duravit stark 6ltr con-sealed cistern dual flush with damped hinges. Every toilet releases spray, it’s the main reason towel rails rust at toilet level if they are close to one.
Exactly this; it'll look great for the ol' Instagram, but after a year he'll be looking to put tiles down. Could've just used the subfloor for its' intended purpose and saved all that pain!
All that to ruin it with dark stain
That’s what the wife wanted.
Ruined is harsh, but I preferred the lighter look. Still a satisfying job.
It’s nice but I much preferred it prior to the paint. Good job though!
I love it, looks great, I was kinda hoping the big sink would stay and get some wood surrounds though, it seems sinks have gotten so small you end up touching some part of it while washing your hands these days. Edit: would like to say the new sink looks nice too though!

I checked, double and triple checked before buying. But even then, you never really know.
Oh yep you never know anymore these days haha. I have definitely bought things that were smaller than advertised.
I'm going to go against the grain (pun intended) and say that I like the dark wood stain. I'm planning on doing the same to my front room this Summer. Any advice, insights or tips much appreciated.
If you’re planning on using a sander for the floor, wear a mask and be prepared for a lot of cleaning up after.
Advice: don’t! These will have been original period floorboards that now just look like something out of a B&Q catalog. I’d rather people pull up the floorboards and sell them to fund a new floor than do this to them.
Looks great, a nice place to read the shampoo bottle while you’re backing one out. Love a sanded floor, great to expose them big old boards
beautiful! was definitly worth the effort!
Thank you
This bathroom is huge. It’s like bedroom sized
Looks great, the floor definitely doesn’t go though, it worked perfectly before staining imo, it’s very dark compared to all of the light wood and white. Real wood floors always seems like a risk with how good modern fake wood floors are, one leak or inconsistent pisser and you may have an issue.
Where did you get the shelf supports from, did it come with the wood too? They are very nice and not seen them before
My wife bought it online. It came with the brackets and the wood.
Nice
Had anxiety when I saw the toilet roll basket to the right side of the toilet in the penultimate picture. Glad to see it got moved when the sink was done. Room looks great, well done.
Thank you
I was loving it until the dark stain went on haha, I've got 4 big rooms to do this to in the coming months - did you hire the big sander and edger to do this?
I bought a belt sander from homebase. I already had a smaller sander that I used on the edges.
Great job OPs!
Thanks
you saved the sandings to mik with a semi flex woodglue to block the joints and gaps yes?
That's lookin top notch mate, good work!
Thank you
Fantastic
Thank you 😊
Great job! 👏 🤩
Thanks
Looks really good!
Thank you
That’s looks absolutely amazing!
Thank you
Love the dark stain. What’s the brand or type?
It was B&Qs own.
That is brilliant, very jealous and inspired.
Thank you. Hopefully more inspired than jealous though.
Ah that looks amazing mate, well done! I've got the exact same in my bedroom that I need to do, did you use a belt sander to get that original finish?
Thank you. I used a belt sander for most of it, and a small sander for the edges.
You could have a game of cricket in that space
Yeah I’ll give you this. I would have a sit down wee here
Nice
Gonna have some bangin shites in there
Nice work fella
Thank you
No wonder you’re happy with that - it looks super. 10/10.
I was so worried that sink was going to remain there, thank god for the last picture! Looks great btw, must have been a laborious job, but looks worth it!
Removing the old tiles and all the glue was the most tedious part of it all.
I’d recaulk around the base of the toilet to clean up the spots the stain got on it. Give it a nice clean finish. Otherwise well done and the space looks great!
Great work 👍 I like the dark staining
Did you get an asbestos test on those tiles and the bitumen? Especially if you sanded the floor boards after…
I agree - saw those tiles and immediately thought asbestos. Nice floor, but not worth the health risks.
No.
Oh
It looked shit, then it looked good, then it looked shit again.
😂
Nooo! Why do people keep on doing this? That wooden floor was a wonderful colour, the new is awful and depressing.
It’s what the wife wanted.
definitely not for me personally, looks like you're waiting on having the lino installed
Definitely should NOT have stained the floor. The natural look is so much better.
What about the gaps in the floorboards? How does one cover these up? I'm an arachnophobe! Lovely job though.
Some of the wider gaps I didn’t fill. The smaller ones I used wood putty/filler.
Ah I see! Ok noted, thanks. Not that I'll ever do this but at least I know what I can use. My interior design brain likes to remember this boring shite lol
Looks great. But that hand towel is basically in the toilet. Move it to the other side of the sink.
Honestly, it looked lovely before the dark wood stain. All that lovely patina hidden again. Sorry OP.
I hate to be that guy but number 5 looked better imo
Nice work but sorry..have to agree with others ..I would of kept the natural wood colour !
Cracking job but have to say I was looking forward to seeing the floor clear varnished and shocked at the very dark stain.
You should of told her about the flooring if she was concerned about dark wood 🤣 Happy wife, Happy life I guess and all that.
Looks shit
Just checking you put sound proofing under the floorboards?
Nope, you can hear every squeak and fart (and maybe more) from below.
