Underwear is a weird one. You can't try it on or return it and sizes always seem to fluctuate between brands so a lot of people do that thing where they take it out the box and hold it over themselves to see if the size looks about right. Used to see it loads when I worked in retail.
This feels like more the answer than feeling the material. Only because I’ve done it myself, especially TK Maxx. I always try to go for the Calvin Kleins but if they don’t have the size/shape I like I’ll check the other brands. Hate a too tight waistband!
Recently saw a lass sorting all the boxes out all neat - first time I've seen any sense of order in that department, must be like painting the Forth Bridge!
You made me shout “what the fuck” when reading your comment.
I thought you were implying they try them on properly and put them back. Thankfully I realised my assumption was wrong
I work retail and I promise you people will still open the boxes even if there's samples available. The only way to stop it is to have boxes that can't be opened without scissors.
For something you can’t return and are buying half a dozen of, it’s not unreasonable to not want to gamble. With those multi—item hangers at least you can see the whole thing.
Unrelated but one cashier said to me ‘just to let you know you can’t return these’ and i said “thats ok I tried them on in the changing rooms they fit perfectly”.
She wasn’t amused
You know how you can't try them on? We all know that. Nobody would try. That would be insane.
Well, TK Maxx doesn't actually stop you. Enjoy never buying pants there again.
As someone who orders boxers online, why would I need to? I know if theyre branded they’re going to be tight and compress my balls and cock. If they’re cheap they’re going to let me balls and cock hang down out of them.
If I've shit my pants I need a quick switcheroo, but I don't need all 3. So I swap the ones I'm wearing for the ones in a box. I assume they then discount these.
Same with cosmetics, I wish they would put everything in those plastic boxes that can’t be opened. I get you need to see the lipstick shade or the eyeshadow colours but you can just google swatches, but people will try it on the backs of their unwashed filthy hands, decide they don’t like it then put it back. Great now nobody wants it.
I tend to notice it a lot with packaged women's underwear in most shops. Primark especially is the worst. Got some a while back and they were not only wildly the wrong size inside, they weren't even the same style as the ones on the packet plus it also had the wrong price sticker so I got charged 50p more. It was a fun return...
People will take out the colours they don't want and swap it with colours they want.
Or they try to mix brands (as in put expensive ones in the cheaper box).
I used to work there. We had to put a security pin through one pair of boxers and the box itself, and also try them on before putting them on the shop floor
Former employee: a lot of the time the people doing deliveries will open the box in order to security tag them. It’s tough out there nowadays so so many random items are required to be security tagged! Even if they’re a hardly noticeable tag, they’ll still probably be done
A coming together of an item that people like to take out of the box and an item where the proportion of the stock tK maxx get in will be warehouse/store damage boxes in the first place.
The few times I’ve ever gone to a TK Minimum my first thought when walking in has always been “have they just been burgled?” because that what it always looks like.
I work in a clothes store... I wish i could tell you... I have spent countless hours repackaging underwear... They wont listen to us when we say, please have examples somewhere, it makes everyone's life easier both colleague and customer 😭
The boxes are usually tagged with a security pin, but most of the time the pin doesn’t go through all 3 shorts, so that’s where I come in to take out the loose pants and pocket them for myself. Profit.
Wow I went to TKMaxx yesterday for the first time in years and thought exactly the same thing. What’s it called when you think a thing and then it happens?
You can't get a true idea of the taste through the box.
Pointless wasting a feed on unsoiled wildpants
I'm putting "Unsoiled Wildpants" on the list of names for a punk album.
Or the smell
You’re doing it wrong. You can only suck moisture out of used undies.

Well done on using the appropriate nomenclature.
Could paint the third bridge in my sleep tbh
Everyone knows the etiquette is to only do that with one box per size, and then buy a different box.
You made me shout “what the fuck” when reading your comment. I thought you were implying they try them on properly and put them back. Thankfully I realised my assumption was wrong
I'd like to believe that one of the people you saw doing what you described was actually Superman.
I recently bought some French Connection, Adidas and Ellesse boxers. All medium. The Adidas ones are tiny. I gave them to my 13 year old son.
So why not just have samples in each size, rather than 50 boxes being opened
I work retail and I promise you people will still open the boxes even if there's samples available. The only way to stop it is to have boxes that can't be opened without scissors.
So I'll have to bring scissors to shop?
No, they have some in the homeware section you can use.
But you'll need scissors to open them.
Have you been to TK Maxx? They don't necessarily get stock in every size, let alone enough to have dedicated samples. It's cheaper for a reason.
Spot on. They don't seem to realise it's an outlet store, very small or very tall/big people must love shopping there! Choice for days..

It's to feel the material? I've always just assumed it was people nicking them.
You caught me. Instead of washing my boxers I just replace them at the shop I bought them from
At least you put the used pairs in the open boxes, I suppose.
"suppose" makes an ASS out of U and ME
>"suppose" makes an ASS out of U and ME Thanks for that clever wordplay, u/samthemoron.
Maybe you’re right- but loads of the boxes yesterday were full, it was just the top pair that was crumpled and stuffed back in
Ah could well be that then, or just to see what they look like completely rather than just going by a box picture.
You know how you can't try them on? We all know that. Nobody would try. That would be insane. Well, TK Maxx doesn't actually stop you. Enjoy never buying pants there again.
Of course it's to feel the material, do you just buy underwear without knowing if the fabric is comfy or not?
Yeah I always buy the same kind, I've never checked the material tbh.
As someone who orders boxers online, why would I need to? I know if theyre branded they’re going to be tight and compress my balls and cock. If they’re cheap they’re going to let me balls and cock hang down out of them.

One time I was very lucky to find all 3 had shit in them so I basically only paid 50p for the box
See it as a positive. You paid 50p for 3 soiled underpants. They could go for a lot more on the right places of the internet.
This made me cry hahah
this-guy-shits
Tk max is where logic and decorum go to die.
Poetic
Could be putting a security tag in the box. Certainly seen them tag the box and go through the pants too.
Former employee, this is indeed the right answer
This is the right answer
Maybe they wanted a brief look? I'll see myself out
Get out

So you can actually see the length and size. The model is not really a good example
The model appears to have good length and size.
It’s like primark, the feral ones dgaf

I'm always looking for unopened ones it's a struggle 😩
Since you can't return it, it's more to try and judge the size better. They're not always the same.
Maybe they ended up in tk max coz they had been opened?
I used to work there. We had to put a security pin through one pair of boxers and the box itself, and also try them on before putting them on the shop floor
The serious answer is to put security tags on the pants not just the box. I used to work there.
The phrase 'communal feeler' just feels so wrong
Scratch and sniff.... obviously
How else am I going to sniff them?
Sorry
Either so people can see length and size and stuff, or so they can swap the one ugly design for a sensible one from another pack.
Sometimes you need to test the fly to make sure you can get your tackle through the opening
They allow you try on for size and comfort.
They won't smell themselves.
Because a few people steal a pair or two while leaving the rest
I buy my boxers from MandM sports. Cheaper than TK Max an a much better selection.
I thought tk maxx opened them to put the security tag on them??
It's because I like to try them all on first.
A means to ‘cut down’ on plastic in doing away with any seals and extra packaging?
Former employee: a lot of the time the people doing deliveries will open the box in order to security tag them. It’s tough out there nowadays so so many random items are required to be security tagged! Even if they’re a hardly noticeable tag, they’ll still probably be done
Underpants gnomes hun.
They put a two piece tag in there which goes through the cardboard.
A coming together of an item that people like to take out of the box and an item where the proportion of the stock tK maxx get in will be warehouse/store damage boxes in the first place.
I bring my old ones and do a swaparoo
The shape, some are very short. CK have loads of different shapes and lengths.
The few times I’ve ever gone to a TK Minimum my first thought when walking in has always been “have they just been burgled?” because that what it always looks like.
I need to check how wedgy resistant they are and test the sweaty bollock maneuvererability.
I work in a clothes store... I wish i could tell you... I have spent countless hours repackaging underwear... They wont listen to us when we say, please have examples somewhere, it makes everyone's life easier both colleague and customer 😭

Been used to wipe there arse
Someone tried it on over the trousers to see if they can fly
Always get consent before using the communal feeler
do they put an alarm tag thing in the bottom of the box so people don't nick them?
Some people will stick an extra pair in a pack of three. So then you have to check each box to see if yours has one missing. Also, sniff test them..
Me, I’m people
Customers opening the box to tell what's inside.
They're checking to see if there really is a pair in the box.
Wow I went to TKMaxx yesterday for the first time in years and thought exactly the same thing. What’s it called when you think a thing and then it happens?
Women sniffing them out
Give it a good sniff and find out
