It’s more boring than a blank piece of paper 😄 my dad got a random call from someone saying he was writing a book about Douwe Egberts’ family and it included an extensive family tree from him until modern day. And we were part of that.
We got something similar to that as we share our name with a famous company, My dad was asked if he would help fund some random guy’s research into how wonderful our ancestors were and everything they had done for the local area. Guy went into great detail on how he would big up my dad for his help with financing the book.
Dad told him to contact the CEO of said company because his brother handles this sort of thing (side note my dad is not related to the CEO or has any clue who they are)
Never heard anything more about it, or saw a book.
Good idea for a scam though as if my mom had answered the phone she would have invested 😂
Goddamn, u/pragmaticcircus! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice right, but he springs this serious GOURMET shit on us!
u/pragmaticcircus doesn't need you to tell them how fucking good their coffee is, okay? They're the one who buys it. They know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping she buys SHIT. They buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when they drink it they want to taste it. But you know what's on their mind right now? It AIN'T the coffee in their kitchen...
Hi mate, this post is against the lighthearted and open nature of the sub.
Rule 2: Don't be Aggressive | Pointlessly Argumentative | Creepy
We're here for people to have fun in. If you're just here to start a stupid reddit slap fight you're in the wrong place. We have a zero tolerance rule in place for racism or hate speech.
If you have any questions, feel free to shoot us a modmail.
That was the only one I could stomach as a Dane growing up on drip fed.
Edit: £6.50 is insane though. I can get 800g of decent ground coffee (red douwe Egberts aka Merrild) for that price.
Vile stuff.
I feel freeze dried coffee has moved on a lot since that was the posh option.
I recommend gold blend but the powdered one not the granules. Don't stir it too much and kill the creme that forms.
I'm the same, hate Douwe Egberts. My favourite used to be Blend 37 but they discontinued it a few years ago. Now it's Alta Rica and I have a nice filter coffee on a Sunday morning as a treat.
Came to say this. I mostly have ground coffee but when I was out and about a lot I kept a jar of the purple L'or in my van as a backup. So much better than the other instant coffee I've had!
If by LOR purple you mean the Vigoroso, I couldn’t agree anymore. I’m a pure coffee snob and don’t like instant often, but that’s genuinely top tier for an instant. u/tokiisaur please give it a go!
You're in a tesco, honestly their own brand gold roast is good enough.
Without going full James Hoffman, instant coffee has a low ceiling, so don't go to expensive.
This is fair,
But honestly, and it might break Hoffman law, you can get ground coffee and a French press from poundland (my local poundland sells illy grounds for 2.50 and a French press for 3) for only £1/2 more than most name brand instant and whilst you'll get less cups if you follow his or any others guides for brewing you'll get way more value out of that.
P.s I'm a fan of illy instant
Unthinkingly, I alway just assumed it was the French who called it the 'French press'. Now I think about it they probably use a French word for it!
Update: Wow, I am dumb. 'Cafetière' IS the French word for it. Am I the only one this thick?
Just a reminder that coffee is completely subjective and there’s 0 objectivity in what makes a good coffee good or a bad coffee bad (unless you literally just burn it). If you buy Tesco value and enjoy it that’s just as valid as someone paying £20 a cup for coffee a monkey has shit out.
As you’ve brought him up, here’s a video of him blind taste testing pretty much every instant coffee on the market - https://youtu.be/8cIqLvJz8VM?si=K7nKNtAeqZIwyWXl
And if anyone cant be arsed to watch, the winner was this - https://wearelittles.com/products/colombian-premium-instant-coffee
It's interesting that he prefers all the columbian instant coffees on average. Columbian coffee tends to be more sweeter, chocolatey, caramel flavours which probably translates better in instant as they're less complex.
I think of Columbian coffees as good relaxing coffees and if you want the taste of chocolate.
James Hoffman popped up in my algorithm recently and I’ve now got both a V60 and an Aeropress. Been an interesting journey learning about not instant coffee!
Second this, if you don't mind spending £4.50 a jar, the Latin American Roast is superb. When it's on offer it's normally knocked down to £3 which is an absolute steal for the quality
Literally all of the brands in this picture are owned by either Nestle (Azera, Nescafe), Mondelez (Douwe Egberts, L'Or, Kenco) Kraft Heinz (Mellow Birds, Maxwell House) or Coca Cola (Costa). The only exception would be the tesco own label stuff.
As much as I agree with the sentiment of "fuck nestle", unless you're buying all your food and drinks from small, independent local suppliers, and especially if you're buying big brand name items, you are basically guaranteed to be buying brands owned by one of these massive global conglomerate companies.
Someone bought it in our office and it became my favourite but a few colleagues absolutely can't stand it. Divisive indeed but at least we get to enjoy it :D
Azera is bitter and crap. I would rather drink the Aldi stuff. Douwe Egberts Gold is good though.
Avoid Azera and Nescafe (cos Nestlé killed millions of children)
I bought the powdered one by mistake a few months ago, after decades of buying granules.
I didn’t even realise there was powder version. I can believe how much nicer it is. Never going back to granules.
L’Or but not for that fuckin price. I think it’s cheaper in sainsburys with a nectar card, like £5. I also like sainsburys own brand. Not a coffee connoisseur, but azera is terrible even to my unrefined palate. It also doesn’t last as long compared to the others? A jar can last me a month or so but azera gets hard and stuck together in that time.
My partner works for Co-op. Due to thefts they emptied a load of jars and kept the empties on the shelf; but they couldn't keep the coffee so she ended up with TEN jars of the stuff in a tupperware in a drawer at home. It lasted like 4 months at least.
If you want a very, very nice instant coffee then you should get Kenco Millicano. It's just such a nice, smooth coffee with a much richer taste than other instants. It's an always buy for me to keep in the cupboard when I can't be arsed making a cup of coffee from proper beans.
I wish there was boycotting technology out there. A website where people can declare that they are boycotting a company. Maybe even link it up to your cards so that something beeps if you try to spend money on a product??
If the companies can't see explicitly that a million customers are boycotting them, sadly they don't care. It's not enough to hit their profits if they can't see the dent.
Depends. It works for me because I'm not knowingly and willingly financing child slavery and baby murder .
Does it harm their profits? Unlikely. But it helps my soul
Bud Light suffered a significant hit after the whole trans influencer debacle. I'm not sure this one is fully resolved, due to the highly tribal political climate it involved.
Kelloggs too suffered a boycott, after their CEO suggested poor people could consider 'eating cereal for lunch'. This was effective for a month or two, but seems to have been fairly short-lived.
Ultimately these boycotts never result in meaningful change long-term. Once the social media bandwaggoners realise theyre not getting attention from it anymore, they forget their fake rage and just go back to their their normal buying habits.
I feel like theres probably some famous examples I'm forgetting though
I definitely agree in spirit, unfortunately, it’s very difficult in practice. Not only for Nestle, but for all of the bad companies out there.
Look at the shelf here alone:
Nescafé - Nestle
Kenco and L’Or - Mondelez
Costa - The Coca Cola Company
I see the Drink Me Dirty Chai Latte has snuck into the picture. Wouldn’t recommend as an instant coffee, but it’s lovely!
If ‘instant’ can be loosely categorised as ‘coffee right now requiring zero other implements’ I’d recommend the Kenco Duo range every time but that’s not pictured. From the images, Kenco Millicano.
I've tried a number of different brands over the years.
Am particularly liking "Percol" now.
They do a number of different blends but their "Colombian" (rated 3) is good during the day. After dinner I use their "Espresso Noir" (rated 6) which is powdered as opposed to granules.
Not found in all supermarkets though :(
If youre making it for someone you dont like go the red nescafe or kenco. If you dont like tasting your coffee but enjoy the dusty sensation of fine sand go azera. If you dont mind coffee being a bit bland but passable (it is instant aftet all) then gold blend is the best bet.
if I had to pick any of those it'd be douwe egberts gold, then kenco smooth. then bin off the rest. fresh coffee is better but if you only need instant then they're the best of this bunch.
bonus edit, douwe egberts has the same parent company to the instant coffee I get from sweden called Gevalia. if anyone here gets to try it, go for it. for instant it's pretty damn good.
This might sound snobbish but would seriously recommend getting a french press and pre-ground coffee - it doesn’t take too much longer to brew and it’s so much better than instant
I find it doesn't take much longer to make but it's the cleaning it out before you can make another cup that's a bit of a faff. I'll use my French press at home but have instant at work.
To add some extra snobbishness, the aeropress is great for using at work and is very easy to clean.
Might make you look like a wanker depending on your coworkers though.
My colleagues have an electric moka pot that you plug in like a kettle.
It never occurred to me that they existed but it's a game changer for places with very dire coffee.
Second this. Back when I was in an office I’d just rinse it after each use, then take it home on Friday for a wash.
I’m an iOS developer so already look like a hipster wanker, so no issues there. Went the full hog and got a little manual bean grinder so it’s always fresh ground.
And because it looks like a faff there’s never any risk of being included in having to make a brew for everyone in the office.
Have you tried an aeropress? I use an espresso machine at home but for work/camping it's Aeropress all the way as you can just pop the coffee puck out and move on with your life!
I’m aware of what he said, but I’m also giving a reasonable alternative for OP or anyone else browsing who might benefit from the info like I did when I was still drinking instant coffee. Relax 🫡
This is Reddit. Someone will comment on your comment taking it a step even further. Then a few more comments later and OP is being bashed for not owning a hut in deep rural Brazil overlooking his own personal coffee bean plantation.
I hate Nestle as much as the next sane person but I really like the Alta Rica blend. I keep trying other stuff because I don’t want to be their customer but it really seems to sing with my taste buds so I end up going back to it.
Guess I need to do more experimentation.
I get a brand called cafe direct from ocado. Not sure what shops might carry it. They are actually fair trade and taste delicious, even the decaf is nice.
Speaking as a half-Javanese guy, I genuinely can't taste much difference between top-grade luxury stuff that's been through all the "proper" processes, and Tesco Value instant decaff. Whatever's cheapest works for me.
Top shelf Douwe Egberts
Smell proof jar is handy for reusing as well
Pot heads out!
Now who say it was for pot👍
It ain’t smell proof I’m afraid
Not when *you* are the smelly one
Let me know when you find a jar big enough for me
I mostly reuse mine to house my egbert refills
Douwe Egberts Pure Gold is top shelf and top tier 👌🏻
My only claim to family fame is that I am (quite far down the line) related to Douwe Egberts.
Spill the beans....
It’s more boring than a blank piece of paper 😄 my dad got a random call from someone saying he was writing a book about Douwe Egberts’ family and it included an extensive family tree from him until modern day. And we were part of that.

Has to be the gold one
Vile stuff. I feel freeze dried coffee has moved on a lot since that was the posh option. I recommend gold blend but the powdered one not the granules. Don't stir it too much and kill the creme that forms.
Could not agree more on Douwe Egbert. Can’t stand it. Good blend all the way. Alta Rica is my favourite.

Creme from instant? Gtfo
You never had Azera? Silver tub with orange top
That's the good shit tbh
Truly the choice of champions
I prefer gravy granules over my roast dinner.
Not only have you managed to sink every aircraft carrier and battleship that you've sailed on, now you've gone and knackered a gravy boat!
Was not expecting to see an Only Fools reference here. Hats off to you! He who dares, wins.
The purple LOR intense
Yes just never at full price!
Pick it up at B&M!
Exactly what we do. started to buy in bulk because it is not always available.
I don't know if it's intentional but when I pour a cup it has a really nice orange smell to it.
You're in a tesco, honestly their own brand gold roast is good enough. Without going full James Hoffman, instant coffee has a low ceiling, so don't go to expensive.

P.s I'm a fan of illy instant
*Cafetière, surely? French press is what the Americans call it! *Playful teasing on my part*
TIL they are the same thing 😄
Unthinkingly, I alway just assumed it was the French who called it the 'French press'. Now I think about it they probably use a French word for it! Update: Wow, I am dumb. 'Cafetière' IS the French word for it. Am I the only one this thick?
I think the influence of both American coffee culture, Americanisms, and hipsters are to blame there, not you!
You need some coffee
I did! but my caveman brain struggled to spell Cafetiere and forgot Google existed.
Sounds like we need to get you a coffee!

Slippery slope, you’ll be grinding your own beans, have opinions on gooseneck kettles and a shelf for your glassware in a month or two.
Oh dear Lord, you just described me
Just don't buy the stockwell & co one. I genuinely think it might be cut with bovril.
Lovely jumper you have there
Thank you, need a lovely jumper to match my unexpectedly high production values!
Clipper. Can’t see if it’s there because I’m old and blind but it’s the nicest IMO.
Second this, if you don't mind spending £4.50 a jar, the Latin American Roast is superb. When it's on offer it's normally knocked down to £3 which is an absolute steal for the quality
Clipper or cafe direct because I think they’re both still fairtrade certified?
Yes, Clipper! Their instant decaf is also a decaffeinated with water and CO₂ rather than organic solvents.
Azera all the way, nothing else comes close. But only when on a deal. The decaf version tastes more or less the same too, if that's your thing.
The perky blenders one is the best imho if you can get it
I thought wtf have the peaky blinders got to do with this 😂
Obligatory r/fucknestle

The aldi version is pretty good as well!
But not the Lidl one. Don't go near the Lidl version.
Im a big fan of it. But my wife hates it. Seems divisive for some reason but i love how smooth it is vs others.
Someone bought it in our office and it became my favourite but a few colleagues absolutely can't stand it. Divisive indeed but at least we get to enjoy it :D
r/fucknestle
I agree. It is my favourite one I have tried, but I don't buy it because r/fucknestle
Yeah but it's still the best instant coffee
r/Fucknestle
Nope r/fucknestle
Have a read of r/fucknestle and educate yourself. Don’t support them.
You know that's the one solid theme I've got from these replies. Feels like I need an alternative....
Azera is bitter and crap. I would rather drink the Aldi stuff. Douwe Egberts Gold is good though. Avoid Azera and Nescafe (cos Nestlé killed millions of children)
To be fair I genuinely love Azera. I just don't drink it because, you know, nestle. Their problem was never making good product, it was the ethics.
Gold blend but the one that's powdered not granules. Honestly it's better than the azera.
Is there a difference between powder and granules? I’ve never tried the powdered one.
I bought the powdered one by mistake a few months ago, after decades of buying granules. I didn’t even realise there was powder version. I can believe how much nicer it is. Never going back to granules.
Azera has finely crushed ground coffee in it too, along with instant coffee. It's why it tastes better than the others.
Gold Blend Smooth. Left side of the second bottom shelf in pic 2 No other instant coffee comes close.
I get the espresso version just above it but same deal
The Lidl own brand version of the Azera is much better imo and almost half the price too!
This is the only correct answer
L’Or but not for that fuckin price. I think it’s cheaper in sainsburys with a nectar card, like £5. I also like sainsburys own brand. Not a coffee connoisseur, but azera is terrible even to my unrefined palate. It also doesn’t last as long compared to the others? A jar can last me a month or so but azera gets hard and stuck together in that time.
Definitely the Dowe Egbert for me. I get the big £12 jars from B&M
My partner works for Co-op. Due to thefts they emptied a load of jars and kept the empties on the shelf; but they couldn't keep the coffee so she ended up with TEN jars of the stuff in a tupperware in a drawer at home. It lasted like 4 months at least.
You drank ten jars worth of coffee in 4 months?!
I second this, Douwe Egberts is pretty much the only coffee I drink at home.
If you want a very, very nice instant coffee then you should get Kenco Millicano. It's just such a nice, smooth coffee with a much richer taste than other instants. It's an always buy for me to keep in the cupboard when I can't be arsed making a cup of coffee from proper beans.
Kenco rich
I like Kenco Smooth, honestly. I'm a bit basic 😂 (red Kenco label)
Kenco Red is a good cuppa when you need it, basic but good.
Not too bitter, but has a nice depth to it. Perfect for a quick morning coffee.
Kencos great, it might be basic but definitely better than most of what's here.
Totally agree! Kenco is not basic in my opinion at all. I think it is smooth and not bitter or acidic. And Douwe Egbert.
This & Douwe Egberts are all I can enjoy nowadays. All the other brands have turned into claggy hot chocolate or bitter smokey crud.
I knew that I was dull but first time I'm learning that I'm also basic. I love me some Kenko red!
[Lavazza Prontissimo](https://www.lavazza.co.uk/en/instant-coffee/prontissimo-intenso) is my work night shift treat. Fuck the basic Nescaff supplied.
Don’t get anything by Nescafé (Nestle) literally the most evil company in the world
If you looked into it, you might find Nestle own them all (Don’t look, just in case)
They don’t own Douwe Egberts.
Yet.
Yup, sadly boycotting Nestle is next to impossible.
And its not really achieved anything since it started in 1977.
I boycott nestle, just for my own morals
Mmm, it gets you some upvotes whenever you post "Fuck Nestle" so I wouldn't say it hasn't completely achieved *anything*
Has boycotting large scale multi million pound companies ever worked?
I wish there was boycotting technology out there. A website where people can declare that they are boycotting a company. Maybe even link it up to your cards so that something beeps if you try to spend money on a product?? If the companies can't see explicitly that a million customers are boycotting them, sadly they don't care. It's not enough to hit their profits if they can't see the dent.

I definitely agree in spirit, unfortunately, it’s very difficult in practice. Not only for Nestle, but for all of the bad companies out there. Look at the shelf here alone: Nescafé - Nestle Kenco and L’Or - Mondelez Costa - The Coca Cola Company

Ha they used to do one called Rocket Fuel with guarana in it…like a code red bull type thing
tesco gold
If youre making it for someone you dont like go the red nescafe or kenco. If you dont like tasting your coffee but enjoy the dusty sensation of fine sand go azera. If you dont mind coffee being a bit bland but passable (it is instant aftet all) then gold blend is the best bet.

Azera intenso. L'or (tin). Azera. Millicano. L'or (impossible glass lid). But nestle concerns are real.
Azera Americano for me
Look at Mr moneybags over here! 🤣
It's pretty much ALWAYS on some sort of offer in Morrisons.
This might sound snobbish but would seriously recommend getting a french press and pre-ground coffee - it doesn’t take too much longer to brew and it’s so much better than instant

I managed to get v60s to catch on at one workplace. Everybody brought in little capsules of ground coffee haha
Second this. Back when I was in an office I’d just rinse it after each use, then take it home on Friday for a wash. I’m an iOS developer so already look like a hipster wanker, so no issues there. 100% Aeropress is the way to go for work, almost zero cleanup
Not snobbish. Perfectly reasonable. Just mildly upsetting how far down the comments this is.
Have you tried an aeropress? I use an espresso machine at home but for work/camping it's Aeropress all the way as you can just pop the coffee puck out and move on with your life!
Popping the puck is the best bit!
Indeed! Which made it even more painful watching my brother pull out the plunger after making a coffee at Glasto...
Just rinse it all under the tap. Big wash every now and then.
Yeah me too. We're not awful slobs are we? This seems to work fine.
80/20 principle 😎👉👉
Glad I'm not the only one who does this.
I just rinse it, should I be doing something else?
No interest in taste. I drink coffee solely for the caffeine. However, I noticed my acid reflux is far better since moving from instant to ground.
M&S Peruvian coffee in a French press is the bollocks
Or a V60 as it's elite
He said instant, don't change the brief.
I’m aware of what he said, but I’m also giving a reasonable alternative for OP or anyone else browsing who might benefit from the info like I did when I was still drinking instant coffee. Relax 🫡

Lor intense
This is our usual go to, too. There might be better, but I can never complain about it
I drink the Douwe Egberts gold. Haven’t tried a lot of the others so can’t say if it’s better.
Douwe Egberts
Whatever you buy, dissolve the dose of coffee in cold water (1/2tbsp) first then add the boiling water. It tastes significantly better that way.
Dowe Egberts, 4 strength. One of the nicest, though I've been reduced to Nescafé gold at work recently
Lor intense
L'Or Classique
I had Kenco Millicano a while back and it was acceptable.
I like Kenco Rich (blue label)... from whoever is cheapest...
Aldi own brand.
I'm drinking my pre bed coffee, a cup of "Specially Selected Colombian Instant Coffee Strength No 4" from aldi It's much nicer than the name brand.
Please explain the pre bed coffee situation
I drink that one too.
Douwe Egberts every time
Good coffee, I just resent the 190g jars. Shrinkflation!
I hate Nestle as much as the next sane person but I really like the Alta Rica blend. I keep trying other stuff because I don’t want to be their customer but it really seems to sing with my taste buds so I end up going back to it. Guess I need to do more experimentation.
Wow can’t believe mellow birds is still a thing!
Obligatory r/fucknestle. Now go and brew a cuppa.
Kemco from Iceland.
WTAF is Mellow Birds?
It's coffee for people who don't like coffee. Very weak.
L'or intense is fine.
Second picture, bottom right-ish - Tesco Finest Costa Rican is my go-to instant coffee
Douwe Egberts dark is our usual coffee. OH drinks it every day, I have about one cup a year (I'm a tea drinker)
L'Or Artiste – their new powdered coffee. It's superb imo.
I get a brand called cafe direct from ocado. Not sure what shops might carry it. They are actually fair trade and taste delicious, even the decaf is nice.
Cafe Direct Mayan Gold is class!
Azera is by far my favourite, I'd honestly take it over any coffee
Speaking as a half-Javanese guy, I genuinely can't taste much difference between top-grade luxury stuff that's been through all the "proper" processes, and Tesco Value instant decaff. Whatever's cheapest works for me.
So we not saying Stockwell?? (Then)
Douwe Ebert dark roast or Nescafé Gold intense are my go too. Depends on which is on offer.
None. Get the coffee bags 😍
Aldi's/Lidl's version of Nescafe Gold.
Think maybe I’d give the Tesco finest intenso micro ground no 4 a try.
L''OR intense, 2 teaspoons. Azera is pretty good as well. I can't find anything else that I like.
Kenco millicano is my favourite at the moment
Nescafe Azera Americana in a different class methinks…
azera Americano all the way
Necafe alta rica thanks
Whatever is the cheapest tbh, all taste fine by my standards
Nescafé Gold Espresso.
If you’re having to buy instant, buy in small jars. They go stale so quickly.
Sounds like you don't drink enough coffee haha
None . None taste like real ground coffee. I second a cafeteria and ground beans .
A whole cafeteria for a cup of coffee? Check out mr fancy pants here.
I like kenko blue. Funny how the eco pack work out more expensive than the glass jars
