Nah, not really. I prefer jewel cases 100% but a digi pack won’t stop me from buying an album. I do hate to see artists overprice them, it’s nice when they’re just a cost effective way of selling music but when they’re being used to wring out extra profit via a cheaper product it kinda peeves me.

NuggetWarrior09

I would personally never buy a Digipack if the release has a jewel case version

brealytrent

My only gripe to jewel cases are they are so fragile. A digipack doesn't get shattered by movers.

NuggetWarrior09

Far easier to replace a jewel case though

allT0rqu3

Really? They are very hard to get in New Zealand. Those you can get are thinner, flimsy buggers.

wa27

Next time you're at an estate sale, buy the whole box of classical music CDs for $5 and strip them for the cases.

Merryner

I’ve got digipacks with built-in jewels to hold the cd that are shattered. Will never be right, and I’m getting into arts and crafts to fix the fuckers. Then there’s the super-tight card sleeves that I have to try and prise the disc out without tearing the card or mauling the disc. I have to sleeve my rare digipacks to protect from shelf-wear and dust. I want jewel cases and fatboxes. There should be an international standard. I’m writing to the UN, this is a travesty.

theretrogamerbay

Yeah that's how digipaks are supposed to be, else it's a sleeve. Fuck sleeves

RevolutionaryRough96

Take up less space too

princevegeta951

Absolutely same. Every time I buy a new album and it comes in a digipak I am disappointed. When I bought Theatre of Pain (Motley Crue) recently expecting a jewel case and it came in a digipak,I took off the shrink wrap and the fucking cardboard tore on the corner. Like, seriously?

Jamirquai_J_Spunkle

It’s Motley Crue. Even the packaging is substandard bullshit.

binglepeen

Like I said, I prefer jewel cases. But I’m totally fine with the alternative if it’s my only option.

Mediocre_Comfort8737

same, unless theres an exclusive version of it

EricRShelton

Uh-oh. That might mean *I’m the weirdo*! I bought Jon Bon Jovi’s solo album Destination Anywhere ages ago and I think it was my first digipak. I thought it was kinda cool, actually. Anyhow, I recently re-purchased the album in my rebuilding effort and it was a jewel case; I can’t describe my disappointment. Now, I’m still not sure if I prefer a Digipak or if it was the nostalgia hit but… I’ll willingly buy them.

hockeyboi78

Jewels cases are the best, but Digipaks at least have the tray so you don’t have to scrape out the CD like you do with a cardboard sleeve

TheOnCcyborg

I despise them, they age poorly, specially white ones.

Halloween_Mark

This is my biggest gripe! They just won’t live long if you’re actually using them

Brustler

Very good point

Emergency_Error8631

AND some of them store the disc the same way as the booklet, so every time you take it out it scratches the disc i hate them so much

rosevilleguy

I swear this same thing gets posted at least once a week.

ohgood

There’s only so many things to discuss amongst CD collectors…

llewotheno

i hope a new method of storing CD's get devised so we can hate on something else

SkipSpenceIsGod

I swear your same answer gets posted once a week followed by my same reply…..because I know I’ve said this exact statement 5/6 times over the last few years. 🤗

Merryner

Twice. But it unites us in hatred for cardboard, we shall overcome.

loophunter

i used to not care as much, but after seeing how they look after a few years of light use i try to avoid them if possible. also, what's really annoying to me is when i see an album i want at the record store, and the digipack is so squeezed by the shrink wrap that i can see the digipack folded in a way that already looks damaged \[looking at you sgt peppers digipack at local record store\]

twzoneq

Or when they put the used price sticker on the cover itself, NOT the shrink wrap 😡

RaggedMountainMan

Jewel cases are far superior. Especially the nice heavy feeling ones.

Halloween_Mark

Those old 80-90s CD jewel cases!

llewotheno

80's jewel cases feel indestructible

pabl0escarg0t

I’m fine with them but hate the ones that are just cardboard sleeves with a passion

orbeinYT

New Metallica CDs are digipacks and when you open them, they stay open and it takes a bit of effort to close them, which is fucking annoying.

sixtrine

jewel cases are infinitely better imo

kath2833

Yes, especially ones where it’s hard & damaging to get the disc out. And since the main appeal is the artwork, you’d have to get a replacement if the artwork is damaged unlike jewel cases that are easily swapped

NormalUpstandingGuy

Nope. I just had to adapt to caring for them differently than my jewel cases. By which I mean I’ve put them all in resealable plastic dust covers.

TakavaNirhii

Digipaks are fine. Digisleeves, however, just feel cheap, and the lack of a tray means you have to scuff the CD every time you take it out.

lonelygem

the paper straws of cd packaging

krimzonBlackstar

underrated comment

thebreak22

I used to hate them with a burning passion (to the point where I would forgo special editions of an album if it came in digipak, and settle for the regular version in jewel case,) but as I've been spending less and less time looking at artwork and reading booklets, I now just hate them moderately.

Kakotov

They are not to my liking, there are actually some that barely come with the CD and nothing else, it is horrible.

willpb

Yep! If there's a jewel case version I'd rather import that than get the digipak. If there's no other option fine, but it's terrible.

Ninja-Trix

I like Digipacks for 1-2 disc sets but once you start adding more discs it doesn’t fit in a CD rack anymore and it takes up more space than the discs should be taking up. Still a helluva lot better than those cardboard sleeves where the disc can just slide out and roll to the floor and whilst you’re stepping back to avoid stepping in it you end up stepping on it anyway and loosing yourself a brand new CD whilst also cutting yourself and getting blood on your rug that you have to go clean before it stains but you don’t have any blood cleaner so you’re searching frantically for a blooding cleaning recipe, all whilst hopping around the kitchen with one foot to not worsen the cut foot and to make the cleaner ASAP only to realize the carpet is already stained and the blood just doesn’t come out without using so much cleaner that you just make yourself ill and have breathing problems that night as you keep your CDs in you bedroom and it smells like harsh cleaning chemicals but having a closed door spikes you anxiety so you just don’t get good sleep and spend the next day groggy and the universe decides to give you one more “FUCK YOU” as you stub your toe on the dining room table. Not that that ever happened to me…

No_Pie4638

Oddly specific…![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)

twzoneq

The Digipack Saga: Volume One 🤣

djauralsects

No. Digi-packs are my preference. Modern sleeves with the cheaper card stock aren't great, but the old-school digi-packs with the plastic tray are the best.

PCScrubLord

I recently got the Stones' London Years Singles Collection SACD and the digipak is something to behold, beautifully crafted artwork and the booklet is stapled to one panel. Just feels like a quality piece.

sonicsean899

Yeah. They don't stack as well and don't fit in CD displays

goblingreen67

Yes, they look awesome but get ruined and messed up really fucking fast

hahaimveryfunny

they look weird on my shelf, but i dont really mind. i can still see the label and thats all i really care about

-zumi

It's personal preference, though jewel cases do have objective plus points. Nobody is asking for vinyl in giant jewel cases, card formats just needs looking after more, it's ok for anyone not to want to have to do that (not to say those people won't look after their jewels). I get the argument with the plastic trays, though I never had a breakage and have glued one the glue hadn't held. I own mostly jewels but like digis, unless there's a good reason not to buy the version, brickwalled etc, if I started a band with a digi I like to buy them all on that or jewel vice versa if possible. Digibooks are my favorite possibly over jewels, size consistency is an issue though, but sturdier edges. Digisleeves are a bit rubbish won't buy unless no choice, I put the disc in a slim case and put both in a poly bag.

weirdojace

I prefer jewel cases personally. Digipaks can look cool for multi-disc sets though. I run a label and digipaks actually aren't cheaper to do than jewel cases. So there's that, too. I really hate card-sleeves/card wallets though. I wanna have a spine on the packaging, dammit.

Creepy_Program_5572

Yes! I refuse to buy digipack unless after a year or so it's become clear that it's the only print of an album. I now know to buy the international CD to get a jewel case.

halford2069

yep always prefer jewel case

Dark_Shroud

I hate them. * I can't stack them with the rest of my CDs. * They wear far easier than Jewel cases, so they don't last. * I have to put them in plastic bags/sleeves so they don't get ruined. My brother left several of our old CDs from the 90s on a shelf in our mother's basement. The ones in jewel cases are in perfect condition. The two Digipacks were starting to fall apart.

naomisunderlondon

i prefer jewel cases because they always fit in my rack but i dont mind tbh

choadly77

No, I like em. They feel more like a little album to me. But I've had my CDs in big storage box the past 6 years or so and all the digi-packs have gotten a bit worn and damaged from bouncing around during moves so that sucks.

bernmont2016

> But I've had my CDs in big storage box the past 6 years or so and all the digi-packs have gotten a bit worn and damaged from bouncing around during moves Use smaller boxes for your CDs, and fill all empty space in the box (even small gaps) with some kind of packing material.

GrandUnhappy9211

I like the idea. Some look cool. But they're too fragile. What's the point of having a cool box if it's easily damaged? I have a few white ones that turned dingy looking, and I don't even smoke. And quite a few with tears or dings.

Nonabrow

Nah they're fine. Digisleeves on the other hand 🤮

GravyBoatBuccaneer

Seems like this question has become the weekly karma farm harvest here.

ohgood

I collect music, not discs/cases per se. I’ve gotten many albums that I love and had been seeking for a long time in digipacks at dirt cheap prices. As long as I can listen to it and the disc doesn’t skip, it can come in a paper bag for all I care

No_Pie4638

They do save on plastic going to the landfill. I shudder when I think of all the broken jewel cases I have thrown in the garbage. It does suck when digipaks get damaged so I feel you.

YeetusFelitas

i like digipacks much better than jewel cases but the thin cardboard ones kinda suck yea. digipacks and digibooks for the win tho

godisdead11111

yuh

TheDiamondAxe7523

I like a nice digipack, not a shitty cheap one that feels like it's gonna fall apart. My copies of Musicology and 3121 by Prince are both digipacks and are great, my copy of The Rainbow Children is pretty lame however.

Noise_Loop

Yes

amergigolo1

I got plenty of spares and just put the cd in them.

MrGoat747

I don't hate them but I prefer jewel cases though I have one which is just a cardboard sleeve and that's what I hate not like gatefold type cases

bonobo_34

Yes

fritzkoenig

Sure they can be made with less or no plastic, but my biggest pet peeve with them is that they leave the cover artwork vulnerable to damage and wear. Jewel cases can scratch and chip all they want. You can just replace them and have the paper stuff intact. You cannot do that with digipaks. Since I only really use the CDs I bought once and have them for display purposes otherwise (or in case my digital copies are lost), I don‘t mind digipaks *that* much unless they‘re already thrashed.

deadmanstar60

I used to until I had to start buying new CDs online. If I buy a new release from Amazon (I know) that has a jewel case most of the time it shows up smashed. I have extra jewel cases but the digi cased CDs are always intact when they show up.

baetwas

I hate the Vitalogy digipak.

tg981

I like the ones that are packaged like mini vinyls, depending on how you store them, they can be a pain to store though.

keshaboy

Do u mean digipacks or do you mean ecopacks/mini LP’s

Technical_Half_1016

Like the carboard Cd cases

Straight_Direction73

Not particularly, though I much prefer the ones with plastic trays to hold the disc as opposed to ones where the disc just slides into a slot in the packaging. What I DO hate is buying this type of packaging used, as no one hardly ever seems to keep theirs in the same immaculate condition that I hold standard to my collection.

TastyBurger122

I love Digipaks. Card Sleeves I despise though, but it wont stop me if thats the only option for a release

billy-gnosis

Took me forever to find a Metallica St Anger jewelcase version with the bonus DVD…should come soon!! -Billy Gnosis

Low-Local-9391

Only if they're [this inconvenient](https://www.dba.dk/the-knife-shaking-the/id-1028976466/), they can be a nightmare to get the booklet out of.

ambitous_kitcat

Will be faking a jewel case for it.

TylerMcCrackerJacker

Yes. It's a good way on making me want to skip out on buying it, unless it's like $3 and I see it in person

ChromeDestiny

My gripe is they're prone to ring wear the same as cardboard covers for vinyl.

Spinodingus

I'll take a digipak over a really flimsy jewel case, but heavier jewel cases still reign supreme.

RandomTyp

no

Glen-Belt

Especially when they're made incorrectly. My copy of the latest Pearl Jam album, I'm not sure what's up with it, whether they cut the cardboard too small or something, but that cd is entombed in there. I've not been able to take the disc out, for fear of ripping the case apart in the process.

SpearheadBraun

Jewel cases all day every day

llewotheno

i think digipak's are better than jewel cases because it's far easier to remove and reattach their booklet. i also think digipak's let me see far more of its presentation compared to a regular jewel case

Pristine_Put6089

Those are my favourite

nickynick92

Digipacks are fine, digisleeves need to stop though.

you-dont-have-eyes

I actually like them better. Looks like a mini vinyl.

martinkjr

I buy both to be honest but digipacks will wear with age

doomus_rlc

I only really hate them when the teeth break lol

theretrogamerbay

I'll gladly take a digipak, they are kinda nice. Sleeves are where I tap out

Idontmatter69420

yea i hate them, i have a couple that i do admit feel great and high quality but in the long run know they just aint gonna last as long as i also collect old video games and most the boxed stuff i have has some sort of damage to the box

ballcleaning

Don’t hate them, they’re pretty good. Aside from Jewel cases being my favorite, digi-pack is fine.

mmaiden81

I dont hate it but with time the edges starts to get some wear and tear damage no matter how good care you take. I have a few that are almost 30 years old and have some minor wear and tear.

Splashadian

I prefer them actually

Common_Commercial775

I'll always go with jewel cases they hold up better in my opinion digipaks start too get.worn out too easily and ya miss out on linear notes.Just find your not getting your moneys worth with digipaks

DoctorMeww

Digi paks are shitty but digi sleeves..... 🤜💿💥 (I fucking hate them)

noz_0450

Yes, but also no. Some of them are quite unique in their packaging and I do like that, so no. But because of that they all differ in size so have to be stacked separately from the regular cases, so also yes.

raymate

Fine if it’s a CD Single. If it’s a full album then no that’s just a cop out. I want a full jewel case for an album.

Flyjunkie69

No, I have no issues with digipaks. They rely on less petroleum products and the CD is exactly the same as a jewel case will provide you.

AdMelodic4471

They’re okay but they suck trying to put them in my CD organizer because the top flap always gets stuck in the damn shelf on top of it

depstunts

Me. Hate them for sure.

HeavyMetalRoadTrip

I don't mind digipak but what I can't stand are the cardboard sleeves that all the bands seem to be using nowadays. Cd is scratched the second you pull it out of the package.

lendmeflight

I hate how the cardboard wears out and they start looking like shit on the spine.

Danook09

They’re fine by me, because it still has some plastic inside I just HATE Digisleeves

Apprehensive_Sir7738

Yes, i literally left my emergency on planet earth copy on its own for a month in storage and i havent touched it and the disc is now SCRATCHED and the corners of the case are DULLED and it PISSES ME OFF

Bradboy

Nah love em, they look and feel a lot nicer than jewelcases, plus fuck plastic etc.

kro85

I honestly don't mind them. It gives the artwork more clarity not being behind a plastic cover imo

Technical_Half_1016

My bad didnt know it got posted alot. just joined the community. sorry

G65434-2_II

Np. Sometimes it just feels like there's at least one such post on the sub's front page every single day... :D But then again, the dislike for them is understandable, it definitely got its clear downsides.

SkipSpenceIsGod

I use to prefer a regular case for ruggedness but I’m not done little shitty 16yo anymore who treats their music like garbage. Now, I like digipacks because they look so much nicer.

Sour_Haze

I don’t save the outside packaging anyway. So digipaks are good for recycle.

piepants2001

Wait, so you keep the disc and throw away the case?

Sour_Haze

Yup. I keep my CDs in those binder thingys Takes up so much less space. And easy to find a specific CD.
