Hope he is successful but honestly, I’m glad the drama around him is over.

Hup-hamst

Apparently they may be paying him £25k pw. Which is insane and we shouldn’t / couldn’t match

Thefitz5811

Good luck to him but from what I’ve seen, don’t think this is a great loss.

TouchOfSpaz

Quite a selfish player with an inflated ego, shame he couldn’t break through but that attitude isn’t the Celtic way.

PanzerPi

Was he simply not good enough for the first team, or is the pathway from the youth team to first team broken or are both ture?

Various_Attitude8434

I don’t think you can argue that it’s a pathway issue. Fact is, we aren’t really stacked where he wants to play; so if he were really good enough, he’d be able to force his way into the team, just like McGeady and Forrest did.

RyanMcCartney

When was the last time someone broke in and stayed about?… Welsh?

PanzerPi

Fair point om vata, however, who was the last youth player to be given a chance through merit ad not through necessity? I'm Ange first season Montgomery and others got chances but it felt like this was due to the thin squad, and none have cemented that place. Johnston, Welsh, Ralston were the last that I can remember.

Various_Attitude8434

We haven’t had any recently, but that’s because we haven’t produced any recently. It’s not like any of our lads left and proved they were big enough for Celtic. Even the ones that might, like Doak, went to a much bigger club.  You’re going back to when we rejected Robertson for the last time we lost a genuinely class player worthy of the first team. We produce a lot of shite players who were only ever hyped for having been ours.  The ones who have been good enough largely make it into the team. Forrest, Mulgrew, McGregor, McManus, Tierney, Ralston, Maloney, etc.  Robertson is pretty much the only miss this century; and one we missed because of some dumb belief that he was too short to be a fullback.. just as all the best fullbacks of that moment (Cole, Alves, Marcelo, Evra, Lahm) were proven as short if not shorter.

Hup-hamst

This should be copy pasted every time folk moan that we don’t give youth a chance. Truth is we are aiming for a sweet spot of developing players who are 1. good enough for Celtic 2. Not so good they get pulled into other clubs before they can establish themselves here. I don’t know of any players we didn’t give a chance to who turns out to be good enough since Andy Robertson. There’s plenty in category 2 who left for Bayern Munich, England etc and who haven’t made it there either. Doak will likely be an exception.

IIJamzyII

Good luck to him. Ultimately, in basic circumstances it is on the player to force his way into the team and he wasnt successful in doing this under Rodgers or Ange. Seems like there was other politics going on with this saga throughout too. I'm glad its coming to an end.

Hup-hamst

The politics being he wanted a huge wage he could get elsewhere and we decided that as he was leaving not to waste opportunities to part on him.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out👋🏻 was no doubt asking for money that would put him into our top earners and playing time that would be taken up by better players, hatate, orielly mcgregor to name a few even if we were to lose orielly our recruitment in the summer should find a suitable replacement that would actually help us in the champions league

GhostOfKev

He should have got more of a chance last season given how bad all of our wingers are, but also if he is moving to Watford he is perhaps not the superstar some led us to believe.
