Again, itās like they think an explanation will make such a huge difference. Like are there contractors out there going āSorry, donāt work for free. Wait you donāt have money bc you already spent it somewhere else? Ok Iāll come.ā
Yeah it happens all the time. I go at the butcher downstairs to get ribs for my family of 12, I tell him I can't pay coz already had to spend for all the groceries. I'll post on pinterest and he will be fine with that!
Iām still not convinced itās not. He could open, slide over, or remove the door on the bedroom side and make the mirror on the bathroom side double sided.
I'd want one for my bathroom so no one can walk in on me or see me. If people walk into my bedroom all they'll see is a bookcase but I'd know it's a bathroom.
This was my first thought. Why do they want a secret door into the bathroom? I just imagine they have another secret door they used to lock you in. Now youāre going to be trafficked or SA was my first idea.
I'm thinking it's a bathroom that guests use and he doesn't want them to know they could have easy access to his bedroom. I had a friend over once and her kid (10 or 11) had to use the restroom. It seemed to be taking a while, so I went to check, and the kid is going through stuff in my bedroom. (It didn't have a connecting door.) Brat tried to say she was "looking for the bathroom." This was when hubs and I first moved in together & the entire apt may have been around 700 sqf, if that.
I could be totally wrong, but I'm betting it's because he doesn't want anyone tempted to go in his room. Still an ass for expecting someone to work for free. If he's good with someone "learning on the job," he can learn how to do it on his own.
But why is the easy answer to that not just āget a lockā? My sister has a bathroom with a hall entrance and a door into her bedroom. The bedroom door had a knob with no lock. So they just got a knob with a key lock. Problem solved.
Put a piece of wood on the door as backing for the mirror so itās elevated a bit and have the frame covers the hinges without touching them. Looks like the shower is there so no one will really see the edge.
This is free advice from someone who doesnāt know Jack shit. But you get what you pay for lmao
I made my living as a carpenter for many years (but nothing like this) and that was my first thought as well. The idea would probably work, but I can't tell for sure from the pix. The problem that might arise is that the mirror frame would have to be slightly larger than the door to cover the hinges, and it might hit the edge of the shower or wall when opening the door, thus preventing the door from fully opening.
My main question is *why* do you want a "secret" door into your bathroom???
My trainer had someone come into the gym for free boxing lessons for āexposureāā¦.. he had ten times the interactions on his socials than the CB.
If youāre Kim Kardashian or Emily Ratajkowski you can get free stuff as people will use what you promote. If youāre Sandra Tyler from Norwich with 5K followers no one cares.
KK is notorious for not even giving the promised attention lol.
Stingiest CB there is, that one. Lots of celebs are terrible to work with, coming from a professional chef's partner. They give more headaches than traffic...
Here in Southwest Montana, we even told the Kardashians to go fuck themselves. They were looking for free raft trips and etc., and naturally wanted to pay in "exposure."
Iām no carpenter, but couldnāt they just have the hinges on the ābedroom sideā of the door?
Edit: Iād be really pissed off and creeped out if I was pissing and a āsecret doorā suddenly opened up. Would never visit these people again. Bathroom doors need to be visible and lockable.
Why tf do they want to hide that door?? Just put a nice picture on it or that framed mirror. And a very visible lock, so you can shit in peace.
They come off as someone with very little life experience and high expectation of everything should be how they know it in their mind.
They obviously grew up only seeing bathrooms with one entrance/exit and so in the post they are coming off as how obvious it should be that the other door not be seen because in their mind every bathroom looks the same
I believe (with no door installation experience) that hinges on the bedroom side would mean the door would swing into the bedroom, so the mirror couldnāt be made big enough to hide the door frame without blocking the door from opening.
Couldnāt you cover the entire door with a mirror and put a frame around the āsecret doorā on the inside of the bathroom. So if would appear that the frame was part of the mirror, but in reality it would be separated? Does that make sense..?
>Iād be really pissed off and creeped out if I was pissing and a āsecret doorā suddenly opened up.
You might be both pissed off and pissed on, if that happened.
I think you're misinterpreting it. I don't think they are saying that they don't want to pay. I think they're just saying that if somebody doesn't know exactly how to do it and have experience doing it, they don't want to pay for the time it takes someone to figure it out.
Barn door on the bedroom side. That would only work if they had the mirror in the bathroom and the bookshelf in the bedroom. They would just need to add a frame to the mirror to hide itās a doorway and make it blend well
Did it actually list as being not paid? Seems like the sentence about not charging is just referring to someone who hasn't done one before and may take extra time to figure it out/make mistakes, but it would be good experience.
Like they should definitely be paying, but I understand the appeal of an opportunity to gain experience where it will take way longer the first time. And then you can advertise the service and will take less time to do again, but you only got paid for the time it would be taking the 2nd time e.g. not paid for mistakes and time to figure it out but paid for actual installation time.
I'd guess the previous guy was charging by the hour and they didnt like his plan and he said they would have to pay to change it. Which is fair enough.
It seems good to go tbh just put a mirror in front of the hinges. I'd say that was his plan and then OP started asking about the bookcase back and the door won't hold the weight so it would have to be changed.
So, although it wouldn't surprise me if that the person is awful to work for and a cheapskate, I don't think they are necessarily a choosing beggar.
That was my understanding too. My husband and father both were in remodeling/construction work. Sometimes clients have enough money or like your work well enough to pay for you to figure it out on the job. Others want someone who has experience doing it so they donāt have to wait a long time or spend a bunch for it to be redone several times. This goes for non basic work like the āsecret doorā concept or ideas that the client comes up with and is usually like ācan you do/try this?ā Sometimes itās more of a hassle than itās worth to try to do.
Also I donāt think the secret door is to sneak up on people in the bathroom. I think itās more to hide the fact that there is a door there at all. Could be to maintain the aesthetic of the bathroom or keep guests from going into the bedroom.
Yeah. They could have phrased it more clearly, but I read it as "looking for someone that knows how to do this, but also willing to accept someone interested in experimenting and learning, as long as they don't expect me to pay for the learning part."
They were pretty clear they didnāt want to be charged. There is a very small chance that they would offer payment for the supplies, but it looks like they really just want it for free.
Clearly says they want someone with experience OR someone who won't charge for their mistakes and time to figure it out.
I'm sure they would want it for free, but they aren't necessarily suggesting that here
Kitchen and bath designer here.
My guess is that this is a house with 1 bathroom only.
They want to be able to enter the bath directly from their bedroom, but don't want guests to know that.
I don't mind the idea, but it appears that the space constraints make it difficult/impossible to swing the door into the bathroom.
That said, I think mounting a framed mirror on top of the existing setup might work. But you'd definitely have to pay me to figure it out or start from scratch with a different approach.
All my contractors would bid an insane amount _not_ to get this job. PITA pricing.
Edit: Looked at the picture again. Possibly you could tear out the existing frame and then switch the hinge side and swing it into the bathroom? But I'm just a designer, not a carpenter or contractor. So I could be totally wrong.
My grandpa fought in WWII and had a legit secret room coming off of his closet for his old weapons and such. It was the coolest thing! I'm sure it was not cheap to install or even create, and I can't believe some idiot would ever be comfortable asking for this.
Well, you could see the door isnāt even finished properly, I thought the same thing. Itās hard to find a contractor that will even walk in your door for less than 1000.
I love how they say they want someone with experience doing this but they want it for free so they donāt have to pay for the time it takes for the person to figure it outā¦what?! Lol
Seems like they're saying they don't want to pay for someone to learn how to do this and their inevitable mistakes and rework. Doesn't seem like they're saying they don't want to pay anything at all. They definitely aren't very clear about it, though.
The irony is that they are looking for someone with experience then saying they donāt want to pay for the inevitable mistakes they will make. It doesnāt make sense. They are clearly going to be difficult customers on top of cheap.
Who wouldnt want a photo of a hidden door in a super ugly cramped bathroom with scary dusty unfinished tile work for their portfolio after days of free labor????
??? Why not get the invisible hinges then?
I had them on my cabinets in my first house. They were a pain in the ass to work with tho. It looked like the cabinet doors were floating. House was built in the 60's and renovated in the 90's.
It looks like they have most of the work done already. It would be like an hr tops, okay I kid about 4 hrs, diy never goes quick, lol.
Not a carpenter I see.
Itās a days work and starting with new materials. A standard door and jamb wonāt work well. And cabinet door hinges are not meant for full size doors.
There actual hinges heās for this task. They are expensive. The door and jamb need to be custom made to accommodate the swing and hinges.
I harvest built a few secret doors over the years. Itās a days work, cause donāt forget they need to build a custom mirror frame that covers the seams.
Thereās a judge on TV who says the cheap comes out expensive. This person is going to have this work done by someone who is going to experiment and have fun trying and make a total botched job then Iāll have to pay somebody a lot to fix it.
Sorry mate. I misread (half asleep) thinking he wanted either a mirror or a book case on the bedroom side and just wanted the hinges on the bathroom side hidden.
Agreed! Iām not a carpenter just a homestead handyman and the fastest completion Iām seeing is exactly what you saidā a mirror large enough to cover the hinges he doesnāt want to see.
Bam. Good to go.
I don't think they are asking for it to be done for free, just for the carpenter not to charge to practice on them if they don't know they can do it. I can actually relate to this.
The carpenter just needs to google "hidden hinge". They make them exactly for this. Not to excuse the customer or the intended application here - both sound inadvisable
Just lock the door. Disguise the lock instead of the whole door. Take the doorknob off and fill in the hole. The lock is how you open/close the door. Put artwork or towel storage on the bathroom side. If someone asks just say the door was sealed up years ago and it isn't worth the time or money to make functional.
If the door is hidden then the carpenter wouldn't even be working for exposure.
How can you expose that which is hidden...
How do you make it "visable"?
I want someone to do it better for free because I paid someone else to fuck it up first. Great logic.
The previous guy gave up and walked off the jobš
Accept the job, break the glass and say.. āI fucked it upā for funās sake.
Again, itās like they think an explanation will make such a huge difference. Like are there contractors out there going āSorry, donāt work for free. Wait you donāt have money bc you already spent it somewhere else? Ok Iāll come.ā
This is actually a VERY common mentality
Yeah it happens all the time. I go at the butcher downstairs to get ribs for my family of 12, I tell him I can't pay coz already had to spend for all the groceries. I'll post on pinterest and he will be fine with that!
"Hey Butcher man your ribs are gonna get a lot of online traffic btw!"
OnlyRibs
Drooling porn-brain
āUnless I burn them, then itās your faultā.
āi want my money back because i burned the ribsā
But does he make the ribs look like they're not ribs?
Secret bathroom door is quite creepy, actually. Not a fan of that. I want to *know* if there's a possibility of someone walking in on me, thanks
A bathroom door that can't be locked because it has no handle! What an idea.
Also, shallow bookshelf on hinges? Don't slam that door too hard now
This made me cackle
Creepy, yes, but at least went better than I feared... At the beginning I thought it was going to be a secret one way mirror door

This is the most likely answer.
But why is the easy answer to that not just āget a lockā? My sister has a bathroom with a hall entrance and a door into her bedroom. The bedroom door had a knob with no lock. So they just got a knob with a key lock. Problem solved.
Because then you'd get locked out too. Especially with a partner
Not if I have the key. Thatās the point.
It must be exhausting being so paranoid.
Nice penis you've got there. It'd be a shame if anything happened to it...
What the fuck
They told the last guy they wanted visible butts and the moron did something with the door hinges!
My thought exactly.
Put a piece of wood on the door as backing for the mirror so itās elevated a bit and have the frame covers the hinges without touching them. Looks like the shower is there so no one will really see the edge. This is free advice from someone who doesnāt know Jack shit. But you get what you pay for lmao

Because the internet said it was coolā¦.
It almost seems like they want to walk in on people unexpectedly. Creepy af.
That was my idea too, so it must have some merit...also know next to nothing about carpentry
My trainer had someone come into the gym for free boxing lessons for āexposureāā¦.. he had ten times the interactions on his socials than the CB. Oh Iām sureā¦.. but if they do give a shout out it has a proven track record of working. Fyre Festival being a case in point.
Especially if you turn them down!
Here in Southwest Montana, we even told the Kardashians to go fuck themselves. They were looking for free raft trips and etc., and naturally wanted to pay in "exposure."
Good for you guys. Iām tired of celebrity worship.
Free raft trip? Sure thing. While Bob over here helps fit your life jackets, I'll be over here inflating and repeatedly puncturing your raft.
I fully get thatā¦. I think Iād do the same. If I ran a gym or restaurant then Iād go for it. But the business you have is quite specific
I want some butt hinges. I feel like those would come in extremely handy
I want detachable arms. How much more comfortable would it be to sleep on your side without that arm??
This is what I was thinking , what are butt šhinges
Iām no carpenter, but couldnāt they just have the hinges on the ābedroom sideā of the door? Edit: Iād be really pissed off and creeped out if I was pissing and a āsecret doorā suddenly opened up. >Iād be really pissed off and creeped out if I was pissing and a āsecret doorā suddenly opened up. You might be both pissed off and pissed on, if that happened.
Hell, if that happened, Iād piss right back at them. Or if possible crap nā slap.

yeah, i dont think this is a choosing beggars situation, just a 'dont wanna deal without someone who dont know how to do this'
How is anybody supposed to open the door when there is just a mirror as a front?
That's why they need someone experienced with secret doors. Like the people who made the "open sesame " cave
You mount a nearby candle holder and when the candle is removed the door spins around.
Put... The candle... Back!
Barn door on the bedroom side. That would only work if they had the mirror in the bathroom and the bookshelf in the bedroom. They would just need to add a frame to the mirror to hide itās a doorway and make it blend well
I understand. Personally, I find door hinges extremely embarrassing. Pardon my hinges! š³
Especially ābuttā hinges !!
In fact you should pay me for having the opportunity to do such a cool project š¤·š¼āāļø /s

And not just a regular door. It has to be a SECRET DOOR!
The secret door needs a set of candelabra on each side so you have to pull down the right candle in order to open the door.

Why do i feel what he really wants is a two way mirror in the door. And no Carpentar morally would do this.
Imagine sitting on the toilet in their bathroom, when suddenly the mirror comes swinging out at you and somebody comes running out of a bedroom...
Is that a Man bun
Not the āmany of hundredsā to make it sound like they spent a lot of money. So less than a thousand bucks for custom work so a great steal already
Well, you could see the door isnāt even finished properly, I thought the same thing. Itās hard to find a contractor that will even walk in your door for less than 1000.

I'm trying to figure out the purpose of this door.
Tell me you're a serial killer without telling me you're a serial killer.
Sounds more like a āassist me in a kidnapping and hostage crimeā job than anything
Frame the bathroom side as well and glue a mirror to the bedroom side. Bam. Done.
Maybe you're joking, but that'd be the wrong side.
Sorry mate. I misread (half asleep) thinking he wanted either a mirror or a book case on the bedroom side and just wanted the hinges on the bathroom side hidden.
No worries, tbh I think attach a mirror to the bathroom side and potentially job done
Agreed! Iām not a carpenter just a homestead handyman and the fastest completion Iām seeing is exactly what you saidā a mirror large enough to cover the hinges he doesnāt want to see. Bam. Good to go.
Also bam, mirror smashed when the door swings open into the shower, and then blame us!
Wait. Thatās a shower itās next to?
Secretdoortism
What a fucking wanker.
The first mistake you would learn from is to work for free.
Butt hinges
I don't think they are asking for it to be done for free, just for the carpenter not to charge to practice on them if they don't know they can do it. I can actually relate to this.
Nothing creepier than a hidden door inside a bathroom! š¬
"It's a 1 bedroom, zero bath."
Creepy af. What the hell.
It does say that they are looking for someone experienced OR someone to do it for free
The carpenter just needs to google "hidden hinge". They make them exactly for this. Not to excuse the customer or the intended application here - both sound inadvisable
Itās called a piano hinge.
No, a piano hinge is just a very long-barreled hinge. I'm talking about the sort in this product link: https://a.co/d/5H8kdrL
Idiot Wants Pocket Door
Why does he want a "secret door" to appear as a mirror to a BATHROOM.
