If they were deployed left and they went right and the left princess tower was still alive and the right lrincess tower is not then it would go as the. Game caculates the left princess tower to be closer than the king tower only works on troops that are spawned in the lane where the princess tower a is still alive doesnt work when both princess towers are alive tho
Simply put, it's a bug in targeting/pathing priority with special movement troops.
Also, It's hard to say without access to the source code.
When a troop spawns on the field it will always path to the side in which it was spawned. So if it spawns on a Left side tile, the troop will path to the left.
The second part is targeting. A troop will target any enemy troop in its sight range and in the correct state(flying/ground). I say within its range because princes will target things MUCH farther away from herself then let's say Larry. Once a troop targets another troop it will change its pathing from left/right spawn placement and instead start its way on the shortest path to the enemy troop. Then if the troop your troop is attacking dies it will retarget the next troop in range or start pathing based on what left/right tile its standing on.
The behavior your seeing is a bug in pathing that only happens with troops with leaps/dashes/pushbacks and when 1 Princess tower is destroyed(at least in my exp). This bug is easily recreatable with bandit. Given the above criteria.
So basically you placed MK and it spawned on a Left side tile.
It leped over to the right. Afterward pathing is all borked because of the leap and the game uses its last confirmed good location to path. Which happened to be to the left.

I absolutely hate the new Mega knight jump time. It's way more difficult to defend now, just jumps from one to another and even my inferno tower loses a lot nowadays.
There was a non mandatory patch years ago for this. It may just be a thing now, but awhile ago there was a patch that let players choose whether they wanted their troops to go back to original lane placed or continue wherever they get pulled.

Bug(? maybe intentional feature) that probably has to do with the leap, ig it still thinks it's closer to the left path. Sometimes if dart gob is placed near middle you'll see it move towards the opposite lane to defend against troops, and then return to its original lane, so I imagine this is a similar AI quirk

If one tower is down then it will go along the lane where you initially placed it if it is the closest tower.
