Razor blade. I work in the mirror industry and this is how we clean sharpie, sticker goo, paint, etc. off mirrors. Brand new flat razor blade (like from a fox cutter not a leg shaving razor)

fe__maiden

A fox cutter is just rude

xerces-blue1834

I didn’t even realize it was a typo until your comment. Like oh, yeah, a fox cutter, OF COURSE. Why didn’t I think of that.

PussayGlamore

It’s for the fox who bit that british guy while he was defending it

cactusqro

Yeah, I spray painted the wood frame of a mirror without taping it off at all. Paint overspray was all over the mirror. Just a few minutes with a razor blade and it was all gone. I considered that easier than taping it off lol.

unclejrslaserbeams

>I work in the mirror industry Let me ask you something Is the mirror industry where you always thought you'd...see yourself?

A6000user

I can't see what you did there.

sflesch

Try a razor blade from a fox cutter.

brushfireboar

I have been reflecting on this

14ktgoldscw

This is the vampire right here, Van Helsing

clevergurlie

I love redditt

exlaks

I heard it's difficult to break the glass ceiling.

sik_dik

it's a great career for mental health. it's the nature of the job to allow people the time to reflect

Roddy_Piper2000

Perhaps they should reflect on what the future may hold.

fig_art

you probably know this but others may not, if you want to remove sharpie from hard surfaces, color over with dry erase marker then wipe off

joecoolblows

Good God. Every mother of a child from toddler to age sixteen needs to discover this sub. My kids have all left the nest, but, Oh, Man! The things I could have used you guys for! You guys are so impressive!

lonelystrawberry_7

Dying to hear more about the mirror industry

VealOfFortune

Would like to piggyback on this... #0000 Steel Wool It's safe for glass and has yet to fail me for ~1000 details

HotRodHomebody

also awesome for real chrome on real steel. Nothing like it. Then apply wax afterward to retain the luster. Pop open a beer and stare at it and enjoy it.

SupplementalAssInsur

Kristi, is that you?

gay_flatulent

Why would you cut the poor fox???

Deepstatedingleberry

Please don’t cut foxs

Hakc5

Do not use toilet bowl cleaner. It will corrode the mirror.

wozattacks

Do not use toilet bowl cleaner on things that aren’t toilet bowls!

DucklingInARaincoat

Jokes on you, I don’t even use the toilet.

WhyIsntLifeEasy

Okay Zuckerberg

plantsandpizza

People have toilets?

daffy_duck233

Where else are they gonna get water?

VacationAromatic6899

Dont drink

bluejaysrule1993

Does it really matter at this point the mirror is clearly ruined

brutussdad

They've gotten expensive in recent years and being glass everything should come off eventually

KillerHack23

Use a dry erase marker over the top of it and then clean it. Using a fresh marker will reactive the original marker.

semistrictlybusiness

This is what I do on my whiteboard when I accidentally use permanent marker. Works fine on a whiteboard, so imagine it's the same for a mirror. I do this a lot

Downtown_Snow4445

It says they tried that in the post

aquagrl

!!!!

Death_By_Dreaming_23

I use this stuff when the markers have dried on the white board. I also let it soak for a bit too.

Handleton

I've had more luck at times by filling the board with fresh dry erase writing and then erasing.

nor_cal_woolgrower

This sounds like fun actually

dannydaddydevito

I just cleaned my entire stained whiteboard (not very big but still) by coloring the whole thing with a black dry erase marker and letting that sit for like 10 minutes, then wiping with a microfiber towel. All of the pink, green, and blue stains came right off. The expo cleaner didn’t even budge those stains.

Smiley007

😮‍💨 I always had the most trouble with black staining even with short amount of time on the board, so you scared me there but I’m glad it worked for you!!! (I’ve found green to work the best in my cases)

The_Ghost_Dragon

You let it sit for 10 minutes?! That kind of bravery deserves a medal.

Red302

Personally I wouldn’t risk letting it dry, but this nearly always works.

jo0oley0

This is the right answer. Sales rep at Steelcase said this is the way to get magic marker off dry-erase whiteboards. I'm sure it would work on glass too.

j48u

This is it. It will work on permanent marker on a dry erase board. Obviously you only have to go over the part you want to get off, which in the case of the mirror is just the writing. I've never considered filling up an entire board, but I suppose you could do that if the entire board is dirty and can't be cleaned normally.

MomTo3LilPigs

Yes, this works.

Mundane_Pie_6481

This is the answer. Write over the old writing, let sit 15 min, spray with expo cleaning spray. Sigh in relief

CrookedTangerine

This is a trick we use for film slates, works like a charm every time (we use it on sharpie too!)

jollybeanovo

Might be able to do the trick people use with cleaning supplies on cookware— put the stuff on and put steam wrap over it to keep it from drying out. May or may not work because of the mirror being upright.

CardboardCutoutFieri

Put paper towel down against mirror. Spray til soaked through. Now itll soak the stain without worry of the liquid just drizzling down

The_Ghost_Dragon

I never remember this hack when I need it. Saving your comment to remind myself; fully knowing I look through my saved things once a year and it'll likely not be when I need this hack. Alas.

floralcurtains

It's not dry erase marker though, so unfortunately I don't see this doing anything more than alcohol or windex did. (Then again might as well try everything)

lumpyspacesam

Expo makes wet erase markers too. Remember projectors in classrooms?

EvolZippo

I remember that they had to be wiped off the transparency while the ink was still wet or it needed to be sprayed with something and wiped off. And god, did those projectors get hot.

serendipitypug

Yes but those were not used on whiteboards and this is a bottle of whiteboard care.

Bplus-at-best

Weird question but have you tried oil?

emericktheevil

Or WD40?

mistyeyed1

This is the answer

fivedollardresses

Also came here to comment WD40

GreenStrong

Black gold, Texas tea.

M2LBB2016

Successful_Moment_91

Swimmin’ pools and movie stars!

SweetHomeWherever

Cee-ment pond!

Harlequin2021

Lemon oil, specifically, should work for this

cactusqro

Maybe after their Bible reading session they can slap some leftover lube on the mirror.

Cheap_Apartment8667

This too especially Mineral Oil

strangebutalsogood

What type of alcohol have you tried? 99% isopropyl alcohol should absolutely remove that like it's nothing. If that doesn't work, a magic eraser or a paste of baking soda buffed in small circles should scrub it off abrasively.

notjustaphage

100% this. We have some of these to label samples at my work, and we also use a ton of 70% isopropanol on everything. Isopropanol completely removes the vis-a-vis, so we have special markers that hold up to the alcohol.

Moaning-Squirtle

70% iPrOH is usually for disinfecting surfaces. Definitely go for 100% as the water is normally going to make organics less soluble. However, the fact that alcohol has not worked is a little weird.

Nap292

It was probably rubbing alcohol or first aid stuff at a low percentage.

Cixin97

Vis-a-vis?

Round-Jackfruit-280

Marker brand

dorky2

The preeminent brand of wet erase markers.

Rowlandum

As a chemist who writes on glassware with markers all the time I can confidently say isopropyl alcohol will not remove all inks easily. The solvent of choice for this is acetone

TmanGvl

If you can’t find 99% isopropyl, go to liquor store and find grain alcohol that’s 190 proof (95% ethyl alcohol). It’ll do the work.

EgrcAA

Yes, either isopropanol or ethanol will work, even if it's 70-80%. Rubbing alcohol is 70% isopropanol and available anywhere. When I worked in a lab, even Sharpie permanent markers were no match for 95% alcohol that we used all the time. With 70%, you need to wipe a little harder but it still got it off.

Just_Chuckk

I came here to say this. It'll take sharpie off of a lot of surfaces too.

k10locken

Fingernail polish remover?

Powerful-Employer-20

Maybe they just slapped some Corona beer on it and called it a day

VariationNo5419

I think either of these should work. Try one or both in an inconspicuous spot first and wait 24 hours to make sure it doesn't damage the mirror - especially if you're renting.

BuildingArtistic4644

I'd try a razor blade before the magic eraser

sadwife3000

100% this. I’ve removed markers from so many surfaces (including my children lol) just using hand sanitizer (which is mostly alcohol). I just leave it on and come back to wipe it off. 99% of the time it comes off straight away. When it doesn’t I just reapply and keep doing that until it’s gone

sashikku

I knew “read the Bible” was a euphemism lmao

ClandestineDisco

My daughter and her boyfriend would “go to Sonic” at night during the summer when they were back from college. Wife told me that she thought that was a euphemism, so we would always snicker and give each other the side eye when they told us. Fast forward to the fall and I took her car for an oil change. Found many Sonic Blizzard receipts from summer evenings.

PMmeifyourepooping

I smoked hella weed alongside sonic trips so there’s a chance it wasn’t sexual but was otherwise unseemly 😅

Handleton

They even left a paper trail to trick you. Is there no level these youths will sink to?

Skyblewize

Ha! Sonic doesn't even serve blizzards! They call them blasts! Blizzards are from dairy queen! Now you know they faked the receipts!

KellyJoyCuntBunny

It just has that feel to it, doesn’t it‽ A friend of mine used to “go feed the ducks” with his girlfriend.

shes_a_space_station

I called my mom once while I was staying at my dad’s for the summer. I was … 16? She didn’t answer. When she called back, she said, “sorry, we were … walking … the cats.” And I died and now a ghost is typing this comment.

sashikku

My ex and I said we were gonna “go play Madden” lmao

BritestRainbow

My husband and I "make sandwiches."

Herr_Schulz_3000

I'd wish I had not read it.

Fcknsmn

Oh god. For years my husband and I told his family that we "have to go shopping" almost every time at family meetings. Because we had to go shopping. Now I think they thought we meant something entirely else.

Herr_Schulz_3000

Didn't you hear them snicker?

Fcknsmn

I thought they were just making fun of us because it was ridiculous. Oh well.

Herr_Schulz_3000

They were just kidding. We make many jokes when (and just because) the opportunity is there. "Yes, go ""shopping"", we know the truth, haha."

otterfashionshow

i want a church girl who goes to church AND READS HER BYYEEBULLL

Zestyclose_Media_548

I use shaving foam on my table at work ( I work with children ) it gets off marker , paint , Grime etc etc - first they make letters in the foam and then I clean the table .

olivejuice-

Yeah once i tried to erase a vis-a-vis marker with soap and it only came off with water lol

Delicious_Slide_6883

Looked through the list of things you’ve tried. What about Windex? Maybe ammonia will do it?

No_Bite2714

I have done this on my own mirrors and although it takes a little “elbow grease”, Windex has always done the trick for me.

tessajanuary

Yes, Windex/ammonia is definitely the answer here!

MorphedMoxie

Nail polish remover? 100% Acetone? Unless you already tried that. Hope it comes off eventually!

Moaning-Squirtle

Acetone is the solvent of choice in organic chemistry labs for cleaning.

Phenomenal_Kat_

This. We mark on paint cans, glass, the benchtop, all the things, all the time. Acetone takes it right off.

Whatahackur

I think this is a great idea for what a normal household would have on hand. I was thinking lacquer thinner but most people wouldn’t just have it laying around

strobukm

100% acetone will work.

SavingsSquare2649

Definitely this. At work I have to use sharpie to write onto glass slides. Sometimes mistakes are made and a quick wipe with acetone removes it like it was never there! (Also handily have a bottle of acetone to mount filters to the slide)

queenofhelium

This is my vote too!

ThotsforTaterTots

The real question is: how was the sandwich?

ash12689

Try hairspray. My 2nd grade teacher wrote on the overhead projector (dating myself here 😅) with a Vis a Vis once and the only thing that got it off was cheap aerosol hairspray.

Ralewing

I worked in a grocery store before upc codes and scanners. We stamped the prices on the can in ink and changed the prices with Aquanet hairspray.

Sea-Advantage-7443

I am also recommending hairspray. Also, try writing over it in another dry erase marker then wiping it off immediately.

TheOtherKatiz

I was thinking the "write over with dry erase" option too. If you use a sharpie on a dry erase board, this trick works pretty darn well.

sproutsandnapkins

Ah those days… feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at once. Cheers!

tmesisno

Funny story, I messed up your sandwich. But it is still edible. A __ need a salad to the meal. Salad dressing is with your tuna. We ran out of small containers. ☺️ ♥️ Your fianceé that how you spell it? Let's read the Bible when you get back from work. Best I could read with the double image.

Angry-Eater

“Added” a salad

brewerybridetobe

Call the pen brand’s customer service line.

UnVanced

First person to suggest this. Actually might try this

AustEastTX

None of the people have mentioned the right answer Anyone that is a corporate trainer knows the answer because our whiteboards routinely got destroyed. #Hand sanitizer is the correct and easiest answer

OtterSnoqualmie

Or non-bleach cleanup wipes. College student and former Corp trainer also checking in.

eggelemental

They already said they tried alcohol, which is the ingredient that makes hand sanitizer work.

AustEastTX

Hmmm I should clarify it’s the gel kind. The gel has a little cling effect. I’d say there is a difference. I have used this method like 200 times I don’t even think about it. It’s the automatic go-to. I bet they have hand sanitizer on hand…every home has it now days.

UrMomsaHoeHoeHoe

But hand sanitizer will linger much much longer than rubbing alcohol…

olivejuice-

It’s not dry erase marker. It’s like the markers used on projectors. They’re meant to be washed with water

FaZeButtCrackZ

try saying Bloody Mary 3 times in the mirror. spin around a few times, smash the mirror, and then legend has it that..unm... the spirit of Bloody Mary will appear with a brand new mirror from Home Depot

NuncProFunc

Is this a fog-proof mirror or a mirror with a fog resistant film? My suspicion is that there's a thin sheet of plastic over the mirror that is stained, and that's why none of these other solutions are working for you.

Shadofel

Color over it with a dry erase and then wipe it off as if removing dry erase marker. This works on regular sharpy as well, believe it or not.

Donglynog

They said they tried that in this post

Shadofel

Oh dang. If that doesn't work it might be new mirror time.

pelicants

THIS!!!! This has gotten sharpie off so many surfaces for me.

Impecible_pompadour

Acetone will remove it. Use sparingly. Like just put some on a towel and then wipe the areas.

DrScogs

Long ago I used to work summers in the writing instrument division of Newell (Sharpie, Expo, Paper-mate) and was semi-attached to customer service for most of that. I would call them before trying any other solvents that might damage the mirror. They were always very nice. Vis-a-vis wet should really have been able to be removed from a non-permeable surface with just water. The only thing I would possibly try before calling is hot water and hold it there for a minute or two before wiping.

cloud_watcher

Fingernail polish remover

Oldassrollerskater

Must be acetone NOT non-acetone

cassiopeia18

Try acetone nail polish removal. You can put acetone in makeup cotton pad and leave it there on mirror for few minutes.

OtterSnoqualmie

K. Before you accidentally make napalm... Wet cleanup wipes, the non-bleach ones, are often good for this soft of thing.

grimiskitty

Ok and what have you both learned from this life experience for future you to remember my sweets?

grayslippers

whats the brand and type of marker that was used? maybe magic eraser

UnVanced

https://preview.redd.it/h4se52sxgazc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=53ca0a469ed0ebc5d8769567821462fdfb0057ad

grayslippers

Most people are suggesting alcohol and acetone but you said alcohol didnt really work, so I'm going to reccomend trying something oily to try and dissolve it before wiping it off. also magic erasers :p

UnVanced

Expo Vis-à-Vis Wet Erase

noyogapants

Going to sound weird but try wd 40. Or any oil. Then use dish soap to get the oil off. This one really has me stumped!

sombrero_mala

The Expo website says: Wet erase markers contain water-soluble dyes and are intended for acetate, film or non-porous laminated surfaces. Wet erase markers can only be removed with a damp tissue or cloth. Maybe you can remove by scrubbing with water and a cloth?

EsmeWeatherpolish

OP tried that and it didn’t work.

Youllalwaysbgarbage

Call the company

cactus2over

Did water not work? It is wet erase.

New_Chard9548

I think in their original post they said a damp cloth didn't work

pandorixca

Hand sanitizer? It gets permanent marker off things. But gosh, I hope you can get it soon. That sucks big time.

AustEastTX

Yup. I posted this and then saw your comment. Ex-corporate trainer and there is nothing on the earth as easy as hand sanitizer for this job. I’ve done it countless times.

babydoobie

Next time, use paper to write each other messages 🫠

OldLeatherPumpkin

Or like… send a text message

PlusPolicy408

Windex. Windex. Windex.

Covfefe0719

Trying spraying sunscreen on it! Worked when my toddler got ahold of a Sharpie.

acidrayne42

If you know the manufacturer you can try to contact them for advice. They may even have something on their website.

wait_4_iit

Mr Clean eraser.

UltramicroscopicCalf

Magic eraser? Not sure if that would damage a mirror but worth a gentle try maybe?

-indo-

I'm leaving this sub due to the lack of competent responses. Embarrassing. Get a razor blade. Spray mirror with Windex. Hold blade at angle and remove marker. Good bye.

BubblebreathDragon

Not going to lie. Your comment is refreshing. 95% of commenters aren't even reading what OP already said they tried. And then others are commenting on adjacent solutions that use the same ingredient that OP already tried. The rest are just repeating the same thing over and over and over because WHY CHECK TO SEE IF IT'S ALREADY BEEN SUGGESTED???

spookydoc1

Could use a flat razor blade (like the kind to scrape stickers off). Would go slowly and gently.

commanderklit

goo gone or goof off

anonymouse3891

If all else fails you could try a glass polishing level grit of sandpaper perhaps

anonymouse3891

Oh and back in the day when we had CDs, if it was scratched up and needed a buffing I would rub it with toothpaste because it has a very small amount of grit that will polish it.

ali94553

Yes - have used toothpaste in the past for sharpie permanent marker on furniture. Worked like magic!

pmsmiley

There is a product DE-SOL-IT, oil based. I used it on lots of stuff but never a mirror. Most of time it was permanent marker.

Federal-Laugh9575

Maybe dawn mixed with vinegar? It works on hard water. Use a scrubber that won’t scratch like scrub daddy and put some elbow grease in.

hula48

Acetone, krud cutter graffiti remover, or denatured alcohol

Like1RandomDude

Goo gone get it Walgreens or target.

nickhansel01

Nail polish remover with acetone

Accomplished-Ad7339

Mr. Clean magic eraser

aucme

Acetone… it’s glass it will be fine.

lectra70

Lots of ideas already, but something I’ve used on weird stuff before is De-Solv-it Contractor’s Solvent. Like Goo Gone but somehow better. Ace has it, or Amazon.

Cheap_Apartment8667

Try using Goo Gone and a thin blade like a razor blade on a scraper be careful and use gloves!

Pure_Cat849

How about a Mr clean magic eraser?

wildcatlady74

Magic eraser, hell it’s worth a shot

Moaning-Squirtle

If alcohol does not work, you should try kerosene. It's less polar than alcohol and water, so if it's not water soluble, it tends to do quite well.

HezFez238

Use Bioderma Micellar Water (blue). No joke.

racerbs1

Ammonia free glass cleaner and 00 fines steel wool

Whole_Perception_886

95% rubbing alcohol. Not the Walmart stuff for cleaning cuts. You can find it on Amazon. You can also try nail polish remover or mineral spirits anywhere that sells paint.

Tech109

Did you try strong rubbing alcohol, like 91%? That worked for me once to get permanent marker off a whiteboard.

Character-Bee7726

I keep a can of lynx deodorant in the garage for removing marker pen from stuff I'm working on.

nimfty

Dude! That tough armor case you have on really did its job well!!

baulsaak

Try "super" or "ultra" fine steel wool. Steel wool comes in different coarseness grades, and the one you want is grade 0000 (quadruple zero). It is used by professionals to clean and even polish glass.

ipv89

Probably won’t see this but you could try a glass polish

mr_human_man

Have you tried writing over it with a easily erasable marker then sipping both of them off?

Quote__Unquote

Love the facepalm from the fiancée 😂
