I’d just use white gas personally.

That makes me sad that will be used. It’s gone decades in that condition. However, it’s not mine, and it could have a worser fate. The correct fuel is standard Coleman camp fuel sold at Walmart or elsewhere. You can also use gasoline, although gasoline doesn’t store that well if you aren’t frequently using the stove.

I agree, OP, you might find a collector here or on CCF that might make it worth it for you to trade for something that isn’t unfired.

The good news here is that I take care of my stuff and so it will be used as intended and well looked after. I asked about how these two items came to exist in this condition and was told that the seller picked it up as part of an estate sale and that she was told the owner purchased them to use "in case of emergency". I would guess such an emergency would be an extended power outage (which I have personally experienced (8 days)). I've done some searching and found a vendor of Coleman camp fuel about 25 minutes away so although it sounds like the white gas would work fine I'm going to pick up a gallon of the Coleman fuel and save my white gas for my backpacking stove. I really appreciate everyone's help with this! For anyone who may be interested in such things I paid $250 ( USD $182) for both. This was a LOT more money than many others for sale (even nicely reconditioned ones), but I'm hoping to get 30 years out of it (probably all the time I have left) and it sounded like this model was well-built.

Use it. But use white gas only. Let the collectors be collectors- ENJOY that workhorse. It’s so beautiful. I’ve been really liking the Lodge griddles. They fit right over those and keep it pretty clean- although there’s always a splattering, the griddle makes it pretty harmless. That’s a great score. I’d be going through it and lighting it up!! CHEERS!

Why didn’t you just buy new at that price point?

Miguel-odon

Counterpoint: it was built to be used.

Nice. 75 year old stove and a 50 year old lantern, both unused and unfired condition. I wouldn’t use gas from the pump in these, they’ll work much better with Coleman fuel or the similar Crown camp fuel. You could also use your MSR fuel I am sure. To me it’s not worth using cheaper pump gas and gumming the insides. A couple nice quality gas powered appliances that should last a lifetime.

Just to add, I have a few unfired Coleman items that I can’t bare to use. But I’m also a collector and have lots and lots of items to use and play with.

Amazing find. I have a similar 425 with the cylindrical brass fount as well from circa 1948. Took it apart and cleaned it up and replaced the check valve and it runs like a champ. I’m not into shelf queens, so I say use it! (I also recommend only using white gas).

amayer3

I’ll give you $20 for it!

Amazing!

White gas is basically naphtha. I'd use white gas. Obligatory: never fueled? Why, was something wrong with it?
