Anthony Davis. It's always Davis.

Plane-Ad-2581

Came here to say exactly this. The brow is the only correct answer

Mud3107

If we had another big on roster, I might just take John Wall to have an elite creator and scorer. We don’t so the answer is absolutely AD.

Mundrik

I’m actually leaning Jodie Meeks.

Kyweedlover

I don’t think we can add an offensive piece that would push us to championship level. Adding Davis to a team with 2 conference DPOY’s would make us a top 5 defensive team though.

Mundrik

That is true. The only other option I’d entertain over Davis is Tayshaun Prince. Big time 3&D guy with length. I don’t feel like you could go wrong with either one.

DaoDeDickinson

UK fans are saying AD while Duke fans aren't mentioning Zion? Or the legendary-to-me Elton Brand?

amillert15

Because AD is one of the most unique players to ever play in the modern era. He's both your best player and a glue guy because he doesn't need the ball to produce. He's a stat-sheet stuffer with all-time rim protection. Now, I will say this. For THIS '24-'25 team and offensive system, Cousins, Randle and Big Z would be incredible because of their playmaking. Note: I know it may seem wild to have Z in this convo, but his skill set is custom-made for a zoom offense. Z is at his best at the top of the key, whether it's setting a screen or getting the ball and making a read.

Meanteenbirder

Ryan Davis. It’s always Davis.

Particular-Walk1521

Emeka Okafor

llimllib

Counterpoint: Tyler Olander

Short_Swordsman

We need championship*s* experience

tsgram

Emeka The Rejecta alongside Cling Kong would be amazing

brownlab319

Ray Allen would be amazing.

jeremygraham86

Jake Voshkul

nicknicholasnick

We were robbed of only one year of Cam Spencer

CodenamePeaches

Honestly Christian Vital would be my pick. Dude got robbed of his Shabazz/Kemba moment because of Covid we were 100% making a run in March that year.

brownlab319

There are so many good ones.

buddysnooplolapie

Bill Walton…best championship game ever

gland87

Gorgui Dieng

9liners

Or Montrezl, his energy and momentum were game changers. I like Gorgui though, solid answer.

Ih8Hondas

>Montrezl That dude was so much fun to watch.

9liners

Our amazing asterisk game (fuck Michigan) his dunk at the end of the first half is what propelled us to victory. That and Hancock hitting 3’s like a boss. https://youtu.be/Km7_zQu8Uvo?si=5IX7T0NzIZ8Rny8F

shakey1171

David Thompson.

JCGP110

Absolute legend. He would tear it up

some_azn_dude

Bingo

Yuanhizzle

Probably Ralph Sampson for UVA.

ConsuelaApplebee

Probably?

Strikesuit

Answers 1-10 are Ralph Sampson. Hunter is #11.

PM_me_ur_dookie

Evan Notl3

7Feanor

Hunter is great, but I’d still take BROGDON in the #11 slot behind Sampson

bukakerooster

Salim Stoudemire would be a chef in the modern game

Rxasaurus

Loren Woods or a healthy Michael Dickerson

CoachRyanWalters

Zach Edey

marvin02

That's the obvious choice, but I will always answer Hummel since I wish he actually got a real chance.

roadwaywarrior

Robbie Humble was always a great guy, went to my rival high school and was pretty much the only guy with that had admirable morales and character. Unfortunately he went to two shitty schools ;)

Suicidal_pr1est

Or big dog

burningcervantes

I think I'd go with Glenn Robinson over Edey.

nclawyer822

Big Dog. Glenn was filthy in college.

True-Reference3476

John Wooden as player/assistant coach?

ohitsthedeathstar

Jamal Shead.

mrrobfriendly

What about Hakeem?

counterpointguy

I don’t know who this Hakeem guy is but we had a pretty good player named Akeem in the 80s.

ohitsthedeathstar

We have so much size and good defense down at the 4 and 5 on this team we don’t need more. We need a floor general. If this was the 2022-2023 squad I would’ve said Hakeem. Not even a question.

amillert15

Why not Clyde, then?

Robo_Rameses

Clyde wasn't a PG, and we need that. Shead isn't just a pg. He's a leader. Heart and soul of the team. Everybody would follow his passion.

HOU-1836

Well Reid Gettys does a lot of UH basketball games when we are on ESPN+ and he was the PG of those Phi Slamma Jamma teams. I’m certain I’ve heard him say Shead was better than him.

Absalome

Dwyane Wade, of course.

squeakyshoe89

This feels like the obvious answer, but is there a more important positional need for 24-25? Since we have Kam Jones, isn't a true point guard more important? Like, Dom James or Tyler Kolek?

millertime1419

If I can take this back to last year, I’d add Novak. This year, we do need a PG most, Kolek, Diener, James, or Cadougan

greenandredofmaigheo

If it's PG Butch Lee is probably our top option in history. All due respect to greats like TK, Travis, James, & Miller... Cadougan is a tier below.

Absalome

Dwyane Wade is a Hall of Famer, and one of the best guards of all time. But if you want Dom James you can have him. Same with Kolek.

CantFindMyWallet

I'm pretty confident Wade would be a better PG than James or Kolek anyway.

JustAnotherDay1977

If we’re going strictly based on position, I’m more worried about not having a true power forward. I love Jop’s shooting, but just imagine adding Maurice Lucas or Bo Ellis to this year’s relatively guard heavy team.

patsniff

One Paul Pierce please!

NIceTryTaxMan

Heinrich? A PG who will actually shoot? Paul's a good answer though.

Ok_Judge1874

Wayne Simien. Maybe Collison. And of course Wilt is an option too

NIceTryTaxMan

That Wilt guy was pretty good. I would be interested to see how his game would transfer in this day and age

Impressive-Target699

Dude was skilled and an absolute freak athlete. He'd be a HOFer in any era.

NIceTryTaxMan

Yeah, everything I've read up til now reinforces that. Would just be fun to see

patsniff

I was really considering Kirk but this one was more of a selfish decision because I have no memory of Paul playing for us, I was 2 when he left so it’s one of the things I’ve always wished for.

jayhawk8808

If we go PG, it’s senior year Frank Mason, no question. And I love Hinrich but at PG, I’d take Sherron and Mario before him. We so badly need a lights out 2. Paul would definitely be my pick if we stuck to the backcourt. But if you want to guarantee a title and we get anyone? Bye bye, HD. Hello, Wilt!

NIceTryTaxMan

Yeah, frank was just unstoppable that year. He's very high on my list of all time favorites

tughussle

Or Danny Manning

tughussle

A Paul Piece would be nice yes, but how about a Danny Manning instead?

Glad_Art_6380

How are UNC people answering anything other than Michael Jordan? Michigan State people anything other than Magic Johnson? Kansas - Wilt? Indiana - Isiah? I understand it’s college only but these guys were otherworldly in college too.

lengthy_noodle

UNC's backcourt is extremely crowded, obviously MJ would be an upgrade but for this team specifically we need a dominant big man. Hansbrough, Zeller, or Bryce Johnson would make the biggest difference.

nclawyer822

You are overthinking it. Just add the best player of all time. Bryce Johnson? Seriously?

ttuurrppiinn

Yeah, from an analytics perspective, you probably want to add whoever has the largest gap in some sort of win shares type of metric between the current roster player and your theoretical addition. A fun little wrinkle would be if you have to add the present day version of said player. Funny enough, I think that probably makes Walker Kessler the best addition.

joeh4384

I think you would want to get the best player ever and let whatever current decent player just portal out somewhere else.

IMissReggieEvans

As Bobby Knight said, if you need a center, play Mike at center

TheFakeChiefKeef

I think it’s more fun to discuss people who played in our lifetimes and also to pick players other than some of the greatest of all time

AJB46

Cassius and X deserve their trophy damnit.

crjconsulting

If you’re old like me Magic did play in your lifetime.

Jonesbro

Deron Williams

WhatSheOrder

Deron was the better player, but Dee Brown was the Illini for me growing up.

edgyusernameguy

For this year's squad I would say either him or Cory Bradford.

M52800

I’m having trouble deciding between Fred VanVleet and Cleanthony Early

Dofleini

Ron Baker booty shaker

elingobernable810

While my instinct for this type of question os always Cassius, I got to think a big like Xavier Tillman or heck even Adreian Payne would benefit the team in a more meaningful way.

JuliusCaesar87

Magic Johnson is probably the answer.

elingobernable810

Ah this is very true, I was just thinking in my lifetime.

JuliusCaesar87

What’s funny, I did the same. My immediate thought was “Draymond.” He would bring rebounding, toughness, defense and some offense to help Booker. Then I thought — Magic could start at 1-5 on this team.

Bengjumping

Hasheem Thabeet/Emeka Okafor/Kemba Walker. One of the 3.

ctnovice

Was gonna say, with Tristen gone gotta be Kemba. Would’ve loved to see what Rj Cole coulda done with a sick squad tho

officer_caboose

I like Emeka or Kemba to instantly upgrade their respective positions. Hasheem obviously is a monster on defense, but I'd probably just take Clingan back over him. Already played in Hurleys system and better passer than Hasheem.

mistertireworld

You can instantly upgrade any position out of UConn's history. Diarra is good, but Kemba, Shabazz, George, or Sheffer are an upgrade at the point. Shooting guards? As much as I love Chris Smith, the choice here is whether you prefer Ray or Rip. At the 3? Caron, Donyell, Rudy Gay, even Castle from last year. 4 is probably the position with the least improvement. Best I can think of are Kevin Freeman and Josh Boone. Maybe Hilton Armstrong. That said, the game has changes ober the years and Caron or Donyell could easily play the modern 4. The middle is Okafor, Thabeet, or Kong. Choose your own adventure. Thabeet or Clingan if you want pure intimidation. Okafor if you want a guy who can play a lot of minutes without getting in foul trouble.

Short_Swordsman

At the 4 I’d take 09 Jeff Adrien. 14-10 and he had the aggressive edge we’ve honestly lacked the last few years outside of Hurley. They’d be fun to watch together.

Squirts-Faygojizzer

Genuinely wouldn't take anyone in UConn history at the 4 over Karaban in this system.

mattosgood

Kareem. Easy.

King_Kung

Give me Eric Gordon please

MidAmericanNovelties

I'll take "things I've said" for 200

jaebassist

Herb Jones

Aumissunum

We have a couple Walmart versions of him. We don’t have a Brandon Miller

zferguson

Agreed

MagicWhalesdoExist

I would contend for Colin Sexton. His ability to penetrate in this offense would be gamechanging, and he was a high effort player on defense

Scoob8877

Wilt

Slightball

I think for this years Zag’s squad, I’d have to go Chet Holmgren for stretch and defense.

DaoDeDickinson

Either Chet or Clarke, yeah.

Patrickbeardguy

Since it’s their college level of play, I’d take senior Brandon Clarke over freshman Chet Holmgren every time.

syrianfries

Clarke was so damn fun to watch, he was exceptional

FakeItSALY

BC was my first thought. Just need that type athleticism in the paint.

Slightball

Funny. I twitched towards Clarke too.

WhatSheOrder

Throw in Adam Morrison for the heart/wildcard factor though.

DaoDeDickinson

We are overstacked with wings, Venters back, Ajayi, Yeo... some big guards that could probably not but maybe play at the 3, and Ammo scored 40+ against USF in a close win because he was someone you had to try to hide on defense. Peak Adam Morrison would probably give us a higher offense 3 than Gonzaga has otherwise ever had, or a scorer, period, but for a player to shore up this upcoming season? Ammo would have been way better last season after Hunter Sallis went to Wake Forest and Steele Venters got injured before the opener against Yale.

BearForceDos

Morrison is realistically big enough to play the 4 at the college level and he was absurdly good as a junior. Don't know how anyone could pass on a 6'8 guy that averaged 28 pts on nearly 50% shooting(.605 TS), shot 43% from 3, and 6 rebs.

georgehxnnon

Sabonis, Karnowski, Zach Collins are good options too. Or you could go Sacre or Olynyk.

0010001

Shane Battier.  He can play the 2-4, is a generational defender in the post or perimeter and can score 20 ppg if needed (with good percentage from 3).  He’s a perfect piece no matter what your team’s existing strengths are.  He was 20 years ahead of the curve as a 3+D superstar.    Obviously others like Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, JJ Redick, or Jay Williams would be huge but Shane is just the perfect player for modern basketball.

bgrad

I agree with everything you wrote, I’m still taking Grant Hill if I’m a Duke fan

Sea-Presentation5686

Cherokee Parks is the only answer

HappyHenry68

But not for this year's Duke team. I love Proctor but I would replace him with one of our great point guards. Hurley or Jay Williams or Kyrie or Tre Jones. I think I would go Jay Williams. NPOY. Elite scorer. He would be devastating alongside Flagg, Maluach, Proctor and the gang.

wahfingwah

JWill is who I was thinking of. Scoring machine, plus a good distributor who can get everyone involved.

Slightball

Good choice!

DaoDeDickinson

>generational defender in the post or perimeter and can score 20 ppg if needed (with good percentage from 3) >college level play, not NBA talent growth Zion, dude... down the stretch he was 40+% from 3 and people, especially Zion, should not and are not hopefully giving up on Zion in the NBA... Also, Elton Brand?

0010001

> down the stretch he was 40+% from 3  Which is nice, but Shane shot 42% from 3 for his career on much higher volume.    And I’m getting Shane’s legendary leadership, which would be key for a team relying on freshmen and transfers. And Shane’s a much better defender; Zion could make the spectacular defensive play, but often gambled to do so.  Shane could do spectacular things while not compromising his defensive positioning.

HoopOnPoop

The answer is almost always Juan Dixon. It's even moreso now having spent last season watching the most pathetic shooting team I've ever witnessed. I want his leadership and toughness, but I also want his jumper.

MoxieSocks805

Len Bias may have a word

TGIBriday

This Arizona team’s biggest unknown is backup PG so I’ll say Jason Terry from 97/98

antofthesky

Terry over Bibby as a pure PG?

BearForceDos

Terrence Shannon Jr.

Slightball

Innocent!!

Visual-Cockroach-548

Doug. Watching him and Kalk together would be something. Would love to see Mo Watson with this squad too.

axisofawsome

Kyle Korver?

Lord_Kaplooie

There's a very good argument that the inside out game Creighton plays would be insane with a Korver-Kalk combo. If defenses collapse on Kalk, Korver hits the three every time. If they stay home, Kalk eats. BUT, Douglas is a more 1:1 fit to Baylor, and fills the hole that Scheierman leaves on the current team. And also, it's fuckin' McBuckets yo.

Visual-Cockroach-548

^ what they said. Korver on this squad would be epic too, no doubt.

Otterman2006

Sir, I root for Nebraska. There is no one such player

bearcatgary

Kenyon Martin (although I should be committed for turning down Oscar Robertson’s 33.7/14.1/7.3 senior year)

Slightball

Lol

Seeumleeum

Devin Carter/Braydon Hobbs 😔 (#thereturn 😔)

funlol3

I was go Eric Murdock or Marvin Barnes

Schned6

To make it more interesting than just choosing T, Johnson, or May… give me John Henson. Just need that finisher that is a relentless beast on the glass and on defense.

watchmego65

Give me Rasheed Wallace

bappypawedotter

SHEEEEEEEEEEEED! But jokes aside, Sheed would thrive in our offense. A solid 35% 3pt shooter who can guard 1-5, pass from anywhere, can receive passes from anywhere, and just get nasty in the post.

JL_Adv

Frank Kaminsky

vindictivejazz

Big Country

pylesofwood

Him or Tony Allen

Champizzle11

He was so good, that final four run was fun to watch.

SpacingOnAUsername

Keith Van Horn

CryptoFuturo

Quincy Douby on this years team and we likely go undefeated.

Kimber80

Patrick Ewing

NoAssistance7492

Corey Beck '93-'94.

paxcolt

This will probably always be my answer.

LebronJamesFranco

I like this, feels like it’s always Portis/corliss/joe Johnson getting thrown out for us

kstate-miamidolphin

As much as people are gonna say Beasley, I gotta go with my heart and bring back Pullen or walker

MyAnswerIsMaybe

Zach Edey But tbh, we need a more modern system if we want to win a championship against a team on the level of UConn. So I would go with Glenn Robinson or Robbie Hummel so we can have a definitive 4 while TKR gets to run the 5.

A320neo

Just getting Edey back would give us a better chance than any other past Purdue player. UConn turned out to be one of the best college teams of the last 25 years and peaked at the perfect time, if we had played any other team I think they would've pulled it off.

Particular-Walk1521

If you’re bringing back Edey I’m bringing back emeka okafor and it’s UConn by 20 again

Slightball

Peak, healthy Hummel was good for all college fans

runliftcount

Peak, healthy sportscaster Hummel is still good for all college fans imo

cyclon3warning

Royce White

mrpalmmer

Nice choice but I think Fizer would round us out with the dominate inside presence.

PowerfulSquirrel4

Has to be Psycho T for us, especially given our current roster construction

easymoneysniper3_

Drew Timme

AllOkJumpmaster

Obi Toppin please and thanks

ZwtD

Easy answer is Edey 23/24 but my heart says CBoogie aka Carsen Edwards 18/19

Capable_Text3948

Bryson Williams: Kansas’ worst nightmare

succulentlysimple

Ekpe Udoh. I would bet most Baylor fans would pick someone off the 2021 team, but looking at the roster now, the way to best put the team in contention is defense and rim protection. There are of a couple of really good bigs for Scott Drew who could do this (Motley, Acy, Jefferson) but none fit this need better than Ekpe Udoh. May have been Drew’s first major impact transfer.

TheMightyJD

Yeah, I genuinely don’t think this squad needs help 1-3. Need a dominant big and we’re cooking.

Hynch

Tyler Zeller

lowes18

Johnell Davis or Vlad Goldin lol

amad97

Jordan Bell probably for next years team. Or Dillon Brooks

syrianfries

That year with Jordan bell was such a fun run you guys had

Clear-Garage-4828

Dayton. Obi Toppin

HuntmasterReinholt

Gary Payton

AtlJayhawk

Russell Robinson. Phenomenal leader.

polkadoywatermelon

I’ll take Kevin Durant

Halvey15

DeJuan Blair was a monster in 09, but I don’t know if his game would translate today, especially at his height. I guess Steven Adams? Even though he didn’t do a whole lot in college, we just need a semi productive big.

SmoothBrain3333

I like be Niang but it’s gotta be Fizer for this team we got.

iJon_v2

It’s a toughie (I know), but I’m going MJ.

-xXDominusXx-

Honestly i feel like Tyler Hansbrough is the only right answer with our lack of a real center atm

Bent_Stiffy

Post season Malik Newman.

Agent865

Allan Houston or Bernard King

mitchapalooza43

Chris Lofton.. I don’t care what our team needs are this will always be my answer.

shermanhill

It’s weird that ISU has so many options. But I *think* I’m gonna say Matt Thomas. He was pretty good on defense, and I definitely don’t think he’d have trouble buying into Otz’s effort requirements. But this team has been desperate for true 3 threats to spread the floor on offense, and Matt’s the best we ever had. But like we also had Hornacek, Sullivan, Naz, and Fred. Maybe Fizer? If you could bottle whatever was going on with Lafester Rhodes for that game against Iowa I don’t think you could stop them. For a team w/o a natty Iowa State sure has a lot of good players in its past.

rodrigo_i

Brunson is welcome back anytime.

danktuna4

Jalen Brunson. Not having a good ball handling point guard since Gillespie left has been miserable.

whyneedaname77

I thought someone would have said Wright.

Kibster3

Corliss Williamson

hbgwhite

Hello? I'd like one Kawhi Leonard please!

jcorn111

The cop out answer is Hakeem but outside of him Dejon Jarreau he impacted every part of the game in a positive way ![gif](giphy|fe0z6QPC84ZaYmNA9p|downsized)

AlarmingInk1674

Magic or Draymond would cook with msu rn

nclawyer822

Tim Duncan.

tyreezyreed

Outside of Wilt (the obvious answer), I'd probably go with Frank Mason. I really miss having a PG who can score. And, I mean, he's Frank fuckin' Mason.

darthtater123

Gimme Brandon Rush

omni1000

Jimmer Fredette

coogs35

Hey buddy he’s ours, you got plenty of superstars to pick from.

Jonny_Qball

Absolutely no one player is making this year’s squad championship material. We would need the whole ass Fab 5.

jppope

Can we make up history? In an alternative universe where players are required to stay for 3 years I'd take Joel Embid.

Flopsyjackson

We have Wilt Chamberlain if you want a center lol. Actually I’m quite sure any answer other than Wilt (even if we were set at center) would be wrong.

F-As-In-Murphy

I’d like to see what a 4th year Cleanthony Early would have looked like with the rest of our squad.

JustALittleNightcap

Okafor '04

LuckyStax

Nick Fazekas

Pandiosity_24601

Devin Harris and the offspring of Derrick White and Chauncey Billups

Apprehensive-Sir-411

even George Mikan wouldn’t make us contenders

quackhorse

Kenyon Martin

busche916

Josh Nebo, the opponent squads would never get a rebound again.

speedy_delivery

Of course it's Jerry. RIP.

Upper_Trust103

Championship year Sean May without a doubt

Meanteenbirder

I would normally say Anthony Lamb, but uhhh…

YellowHammerDown

This one is spicy, but Dakota Mathias. By his senior year he was not only a lights out shooter but he organized the defense like a Mike linebacker, and was a half decent individual defender in his own right. Zach is the obvious choice for many many reasons.
