I'm generally that way, but I always have a team that I prioritize over the other. Im generally also a Sens fan but when they play the Avs, it's Avs all the way.
same ❤️ Avs over anyone if we’re playing them, but i want to see Kadri, and E Rod, and Bo, JT.. i want to see them all do well
(except Matt Duchene. I know it’s overplayed and tired but dude just *irks* me.)
Penguins. I live in PA. Die hard fan of both.
Between the Avs and Pens I’ve been extremely spoiled over the last three plus decades. When one has been in a down period the other has been chasing and winning Cups.
91 92 96 01 09 16 17 and 22.
My hockey fandom has been blessed by Cole Harbour’s finest.
Same. Not exactly sure why...though I have been to the burg and thought it was a great city. Lemieux and Sid probably helped a little too. And Mike Lange.
Lange was fun, especially the goal calls :)
WDVE also did great bits on the Pens and their players in the 90's Some of my family started migrating there around that time and I lived there for 4 years as well. I really enjoyed the vibe. Different, but very genuine.
I was born and grew up in Colorado until I went to high school and we moved to Seattle. I have always been a diehard Avs fan without a second team. When the Kraken joined I tried to take them on as my number 2 to cheer for. That round one playoff series has now made that impossible. I’m a one team man. Hail satan! 🤘🏻
This is not going to go over well, but it’s the Red Wings. I was born in Denver but lived in Michigan during the huge rivalry. Seeing the bench clearing brawls on live TV as a kid made me fall in love with hockey. So even though I tell all of my friends in Michigan fuck the Red Wings almost daily, I secretly root for them to make a good playoff run every year.
Years ago this wouldn't go over will. Now? Meh. They are not the dynasty they used to be. They aren't even in the same conference anymore. I used to despise the redwings. Really just a more meh feeling towards them now.
Even still if it were like it was, still good reasons to like them.
Me too. I wasn't quite old enough to really invest in the nasty part of the feud in the 90s, but I knew that it was damn good hockey (though I still won't defend lemieux), and a fantastic rivalry. I started being a ducks fan from 03 when they swept the wings, then I felt like there wasn't really much bad blood existing. Then we got Todd bertuzzi, and any hatred I had got directed squarely at the Canucks.
I miss the red wings, so sad they're not in the west anymore. Can we trade for the Blackhawks or the preds?
The Avs *are* my second team. I grew up in and around San Jose, but haven't lived there in 7 years. All of my new friends in Colorado are Avs fans, so I would watch games with them and adopted them as my second team.
Islanders. Moved to NYC area entering high school. Went to a game when UBS opened and fell in love with the atmosphere. Place was packed for a shitty Isles vs Flyers game in the middle of January and couldn’t believe they nearly got moved out of Long Island.
The playoff game vs Carolina when they scored 4 unanswered in the 3rd period is third best sports environment I’ve ever been a part of. Only behind the 2007 World Series and CU vs Nebraska last year.
Never got the chance to see a game at Nassau but a couple of long-time Islanders fans I’ve talked to say UBS, while it will never recapture the environment of the old arena, is a good approximation of what it was
It’s a difficult life, but…..bruins. My wife is from Boston, and her brother played hockey so the family got to meet Chara, Bergeron, and Marchand a number of times. Apparently all are great dudes, Marchand even shot around with her brother and signed a jersey for him. From their conversations, he’s apparently a great dude when not actually playing. I guess idk if I’d call it second favorite team, but second most watched team for sure.
She’s turning a leaf and becoming an Avs fan because she’s more in love with Gabe than she is me, but aren’t we all?
Secondary mention for blackhawks. Kane is the player that made me fall in love with hockey.
My list grows longer every time this question comes up.
I was into'd to hockey in the 80s, and my first player crush was SuperMario Lemieux. Followed by Jagr's epic flow. So, the Pens were my first team, until the Nordiques came to Colorado. Since then, Pens 2nd.
But I also kind of like the Sabres (long time admirer of Miroslav Satan, best name in hockey history). Plus now they have Bo.
I'm ok with the Disaster Bros (Flames, Canes, and sometimes Lightning).
And recently, I want the Isles to do well for St Patty.
Also, I can't hate the Devils because they used to be the Rockies (yes, I'm old), AND they adopted our Kermit.
I think a good question would be: is there an Original 6 team that you don't hate?
Not easy to say this… but Vancouver… I’m from Vancouver but moved around a lot so a kid. Always needed my consistent hockey team to cheer for. I didn’t learn about the Bertuzzi/ Moore incident until I became as Avs fan as well.
I live in Vancouver (originally from New Zealand). I wouldn’t say I have a second team, but I take an interest in what the Canucks are up to because I live in Van and it’s all they talk about here. Catch the odd game on TV. Mainly listen to the local sports radio in the hope they might mention the Avs 😂
Avs are my second favorite team (I grew up in New England). I started following them in graduate school almost twenty years ago when they were bad and I've really enjoyed the journey from the wilderness to the mountain top.
Same, new englander living in CO…the Avs are my second team. Interestingly they’ve been my west conference team since 2000, wonder what happened that year?-
20 years ago they definitely weren’t bad. Not making the deep runs like they did previously but they were a playoff-calibre team until, what, 2009? There was that one year in there they missed with 95 points or whatever.
The year I started my program (the 2008-09 season) the Avs were the worst team in the Western Conference and not by a little bit. Bounced in the first round of the playoffs the next season (09-10). Awful the season following that (10-11). Merely mediocre/bad the following season (11-12). Abysmally bad the next (12-13). Great team that exited playoffs far too early my last year in Colorado (13-14).
They weren't a good team on the whole.
Yeah no, that’s true, I guess I’m just disagreeing with your definition of “almost 20 years ago.” Everything you’ve described was at most 15 years ago. Whatever, it doesn’t matter. I’m being a pedant I guess. They were very good in 04, pretty good in 06, and decent in 07 and 08.
Toronto Maple Leafs.
It’s because I like to listen to NHL games and in my opinion, they have the best radio team. Joe Bowen and Jim Ralph. They are hilarious, insightful, superstitious, and total homers. Highly recommend checking them out.
i don’t like the Bruins but upvoting bc of that point about out of market games.
Jesus, i’m back in Denver and it’s a struggle watching games here unless you pay $80/mo for Fubo or Directv
I kinda like the Kings and will root for them when the Avs don't make the playoffs. But if we ever lose a playoff series to them that will probably change.
I really wish Buffalo could make a run cause they deserve it. But I live in CA and my Dad is a ducks fan so I always root for them as well (have been to a bunch of games too of course). Avs all the way though forever
Before the Avs, we had the Denver Grizzlies which was the farm team of the Islanders. The one year they were here they dominted the IHL. Two of their superstars, Palffy & Kasparaitis, went on to be stars in the NHL as the Avs were playing their first season. I loved those Grizzlies players and couldn't abandon how much i enjoyed their time in Denver, which ended in a league championship. The ideal SC matchup for me would be the Islanders v Avalanche and even though I'd be greatly more biased towards wanting the Avs to win, the Isles are team I'd be least disappointed to lose to.
I lived in Tampa for a few years during their rise. That city truly cares for the Bolts and I appreciated that. The Bucs and Marlins were meh. So yea It had been Lightning for a while but as more time passes, I follow them less and less. Have family in Raleigh and Nashville and find myself following the Canes and Perds more now.
also, i’ve always liked Marc Andre Fleury as a goalie but watching the mic’d up clips of him practically begging the ref to let him fight Binnington won him a permanent spot in my heart.
I’m also a Boston Bruins fan. Traces back to when I was a kid. Dad was trying to get us into hockey, so he picked up some jerseys. He got me a Bruins jersey. This was just before the Avs moved to town, so the Bruins were my first team to follow.
Flyers, because I live in Philadelphia and they’re a fun team to watch. They fall under the radar here to an extent so I can go to games for pretty cheap too.
Raised in a Bruins family, adopted the Avs when they moved to town. Still support both equally (even after moving to D.C. and marrying a Caps fan!),when Boston and Colorado play I hope for an OT game and the extra point to whomever needs it more in the standings.
Kraken. I was born and raised in Washington State, and I’ve been wanting a team here ever since I was a kid. There wasn’t one though, but I found the Avs. When we finally got the Kraken though, I couldn’t just abandon the Avs, as I’d been a fan for 15 years already by that point. So now I root for them in a 1A/1B fashion, with the Avs being first!
Born and raised in Edmonton. So Oilers are my 2nd favourite. Been an Avs fan since they moved from Quebec when I was 10. The City is buzzing after the epic comeback so far. I think they finish off the Cats on Monday. They have broken their collective will
Avalanche are actually my 2nd favorite. Been following them since 95-96 with sakic, forsberg, Roy, etc.
Flyers (local team) are unfortunately my favorite lol
Capitals. I have lived in Maryland and Virginia for almost 25 years but Denver’s teams will always have my heart.
Posting this while watching Rox/Nats…
I was a Colorado Rockies fan growing up, then they moved to New Jersey. I continued to follow them seriously until the Avs came into being. Now it’s always Avs first, but I’ve adopted NY Rangers as my second team (I’m in NY a lot and get to see lots of games at MSG) and I recently adopted Edmonton after a whim long weekend spent in Edmonton and being adopted by every local I met there - it was great so.. Go Oilers!!
Avs since I was born, but I be always been kinda partial to the ducks cause I liked their colors and goalhorn lmaaao that’s literally it. Other than that I “kinda” support teams if they have a goalie I like, but that’s only during playoffs if Avs get elimmed
I hate to say it but Capitals. My in laws live just south of DC and I’ll probably taking a job out there soon. I’ve followed Ovi his whole career, and I’ve admittedly been a big fanboy. Once Oshie went to the Caps after St. Louis, that pretty much sealed the deal for me. He is a UND alumni, and we don’t have much to cheer for here in ND, so
Him and Jonathan Toews were pretty much the biggest thing around when I was in High school.
Not a second favorite team, but if the avs weren't playing, I'd watch the Kings, kraken, Golden kights, Ducks games, or any other game that seemed good
For NHL, it's more tolerating other teams than like them. For AHL, I like the Wilds team since it's the only hockey I get in Iowa, and I like Edmontons farm team since I have some friends who work for them. No one's gonna top my Avs, though I will still spitefully rock up to an Iowa Wild game in a Joe Sakic shirt.
Because of my CO/NJ connection it’s the former Rockies. First NHL game I went to when they beat the Rangers at McNichols. Rooted for them until the Avs moved here about the same time I came back.
Sister and her family live in Nashville and my first three live NHL games were there. Also, the first Avs game I saw live was this past season... in Nashville... When Makar had the wonky puck bounce off the backboards and the Preds completed the last minute come from behind win. It still makes me sick to think about.
Otherwise, I was in Denver when the Avs moved there. I was a broncos first fan all my life, but hockey is so much more entertaining. Avs took the number one spot and have never let it go.
Montreal, I follow them more out of necessity than anything. I'm in peak Habs territory so if I want to talk hockey I need a little knowledge on the team.
Born in Boston so my first team was the Bruins. Moved to Colorado in 92 when I was five so when the Avs moved here they instantly became my Western Conference team. Still root for both of them equally.
Hurricanes. I moved to Raleigh in 2004 & bought season tickets the season after the lockout. All they did was win the Stanley Cup that year, on home ice, in front of the loudest and most dialed-in crowd I've ever seen (and I was in the building when the Ray Borque lifted the Cup with the Avs). Moved back to Denver in 2016 and to the extent I pay attention to Eastern Conference hockey anymore, it's the Canes I pay attention to.
I don’t have any second “favorite” teams. However I always want (“root” is to strong if a word) all the original 6 teams to do well because I think it’s good for the league.
One of my best friends growing up was and still is a huge Bruins fan. I hate Boston sports in general but if the Bruins are winning I know he's probably happy
![gif](giphy|X7PCkbUm1LYO5VqbKf)
same Avs since day 1 and will never cheer for any other team to each their own but i think its cringe to have multiple teams
I'm generally that way, but I always have a team that I prioritize over the other. Im generally also a Sens fan but when they play the Avs, it's Avs all the way.
This is the way.
The Colorado Eagles
Buffalo, Islanders.
Because of Byram/Jost and Roy? Or does it run deeper?
Nah, I just like them. I’ve liked the Islanders for awhile now but Buffalo since the Drury/Roy/Afinogenov era
I also had affection for that Drury core. He should have been an Av forever!
avs and sabres only for me 😅
The Colorado Eagles. I tried to like the Kraken when they first came on but we all know what happened there.
Yep. Broncos and Nuggets
If we're going that route, for me it's all of those + the Mammoth. Season ticket holder for them.
Hell yeah go Mammoth!
This is the answer. I'd allow the Rockies, but they'll just never be great, so it's completely understandable to exclude them if you wish.
As long as the Monforts own them, I will not cheer for them
It's so sad we can't just vote for them to sell to an owner(s) that actually want to see the team win.
Avs all day baby
I find myself rooting for former players teams. E Rod on Panthers, Kadri on Flames.
same ❤️ Avs over anyone if we’re playing them, but i want to see Kadri, and E Rod, and Bo, JT.. i want to see them all do well (except Matt Duchene. I know it’s overplayed and tired but dude just *irks* me.)
Hurricanes
Disaster Bros for life. And my aunt lives there and likes them.
Carolina Hurricanes, because disaster buddies.
Depending on how game 7 goes the panthers might also be disaster buddies
😂😂😂
Luleå in SHL and SDHL and HIFK in Naisten Liiga and Liiga
Montreal bc of my wife. Was disappointed we didn’t get the playoff series against them in 2021
I’m surprised I haven’t this one yet but the New Jersey Devils have a soft spot for me
I'm there with you, grew up (and reside in) the Albany area, so a lot of their best generation were River Rats first.
My 2nd favorite team is whoever is playing the Wild
Pens.
Same. Not exactly sure why...though I have been to the burg and thought it was a great city. Lemieux and Sid probably helped a little too. And Mike Lange.

"Well scratch my back with a hacksaw!" I was expecting a post-industrial shithole, but it was the complete opposite. Really nice place.
Sabres. Because I enjoy pain
Colorado Eagles
When the Avs are totally out of the playoffs, then I have a 2nd favorite team.
I was born and grew up in Colorado until I went to high school and we moved to Seattle. I have always been a diehard Avs fan without a second team. When the Kraken joined I tried to take them on as my number 2 to cheer for. That round one playoff series has now made that impossible. I’m a one team man. Hail satan! 🤘🏻

Oh man what I'd give for the Avs and Red Wings to be good at the same time and meet in the cup final.
I follow the islanders but don’t root for them per se.
The Avs *are* my second team. I grew up in and around San Jose, but haven't lived there in 7 years. All of my new friends in Colorado are Avs fans, so I would watch games with them and adopted them as my second team.

Sorry about last year then
The KC Mavericks of the ECHL; no NHL in KC and I damn sure ain’t rooting for the bLoos.

Wild and Ducks. I’m from MN, and I enjoy the suffering
Wild and Avs fan here also!
I was going to say the ducks as well just because of the disney movies. Sad to see that logo go.
I grew up watching the animated show and have been a fan since. Damn Disney marketing…
Not easy to say this… but Vancouver… I’m from Vancouver but moved around a lot so a kid. Always needed my consistent hockey team to cheer for. I didn’t learn about the Bertuzzi/ Moore incident until I became as Avs fan as well.
You can be a Vancouver fan. As long as you're not a bertuzi fan.

Bad 20 years ago? that was their second cu—-oh my fuck I’m old
Sadly I missed that run by 7 years
20 years ago they definitely weren’t bad. Not making the deep runs like they did previously but they were a playoff-calibre team until, what, 2009? There was that one year in there they missed with 95 points or whatever.

The '08 season was 16 years ago and they were awful! Time is weird.
They made the playoffs and won a round! BTW, by 08 I mean 2007-2008.
That was the year before I moved to Colorado though.... And then they only improved after I was gone. But tickets were cheap and the games were fun!
Bruh
You asked! Never ask questions you don't want the answers to! I was born following the Bruins, but I *chose* to follow the Avs.
Fair.
Leafs for proximity, and Capitals for my color analyst cousin.
Pens
The Leafs. My family are all Leafs fans. Thankfully I was saved from a life of misery
Same same
Sabres, Blackhawks, Bruins (family ties, and proximity)
Sabres
My wife is a rangers fan which means I have to be a rangers fan
Ya, the AVS
![gif](giphy|Fa91fHqzvjA5pwgkV3)
Rangers and Sabres. Pat LaFontaine
Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s because I like to listen to NHL games and in my opinion, they have the best radio team. Joe Bowen and Jim Ralph. They are hilarious, insightful, superstitious, and total homers. Highly recommend checking them out.
always been the devils for me, root for them against everyone other than the avs
![gif](giphy|H1YMguVrVeI0Xz5c8v)
I like the Bruins. It's nice to have a secondary team given how much easier it is to watch out of market games without cable
i don’t like the Bruins but upvoting bc of that point about out of market games. Jesus, i’m back in Denver and it’s a struggle watching games here unless you pay $80/mo for Fubo or Directv
Sabres!
I kinda like the Kings and will root for them when the Avs don't make the playoffs. But if we ever lose a playoff series to them that will probably change.
Buffalo, Flyers, but also orgs that struggle, like Yotes/Utah, CBJ, Buffalo again.
I like all of them because I just enjoy watching hockey.
I really wish Buffalo could make a run cause they deserve it. But I live in CA and my Dad is a ducks fan so I always root for them as well (have been to a bunch of games too of course). Avs all the way though forever
There are teams I don't hate to see win
When I was a kid I was fascinated by Alex Ovechkin. So I became an Ovi fan with a little rooting for the Caps on the side.
Before the Avs, we had the Denver Grizzlies which was the farm team of the Islanders. The one year they were here they dominted the IHL. Two of their superstars, Palffy & Kasparaitis, went on to be stars in the NHL as the Avs were playing their first season. also, i’ve always liked Marc Andre Fleury as a goalie but watching the mic’d up clips of him practically begging the ref to let him fight Binnington won him a permanent spot in my heart.
Canes and Flames. Disaster bros.
The Penguins!! And the flames and the sabres. Probably in that order
I’m also a Boston Bruins fan. Traces back to when I was a kid. Dad was trying to get us into hockey, so he picked up some jerseys. He got me a Bruins jersey. This was just before the Avs moved to town, so the Bruins were my first team to follow.
Not bad although when Hall played on the Bruins I hated them
Oilers... I live in Edmonton so yeah.
Incredible work y'all have done this series. Best of luck tomorrow night
Tampa because I've lived here for almost 10 years now. Nevertheless, when we were in the SCF me and my buddy proudly backed our hometown team
Oilers…Majority of my family is from Edmonton.
You hopeful about tomorrow?
I haven’t given up on them yet! They can definitely take it if they wanted to!
Flyers, because I live in Philadelphia and they’re a fun team to watch. They fall under the radar here to an extent so I can go to games for pretty cheap too.
Flyers for me too because I wasn't going to stop watching Forsberg no matter where he went.
Whoever beats whichever team knocks the Avs out of the playoffs
So, the Oilers?
This time
Canucks, avs, red wings. In that order.
Used to be Montreal. Now Colorado might be my second favorite because I’ve lived in Utah for the last 30 years
Raised in a Bruins family, adopted the Avs when they moved to town. Still support both equally (even after moving to D.C. and marrying a Caps fan!),when Boston and Colorado play I hope for an OT game and the extra point to whomever needs it more in the standings.
Let's go Buffalo
For me it’s the Kings. I live in Anaheim and I hate the Ducks with a passion so it’s the Kings.
I have a soft spot for Nashville because my mom used to live there.
Buffalo, Derek Roy played on my OHL team and I followed him for a bit. As well, Drury and Briere played there. So good times
Was born in Chicago but the Av’s/wings rivalry made me a Colorado hockey fan so sorry not sorry Chicago
Mine use to be the Yotes but now I got nothing
Will probably be the Utah Team as I live 30 minutes away from the Delta Center and the tickets are always super affordable and parking is nice.
Avs will always be number 1, but as a Utahn and Utah season ticket holder, I'll have to make Utah my #2.
I was a huge Coyotes fan in addition to the Avs, moving all that love to Utah now. Can't wait to see the boys this season!
Ottawa Senators Buffalo Sabres
Well I was a big fan of the Lubbock Cotton Kings when I was younget
Born and raised in Edmonton. So Oilers are my 2nd favourite. Been an Avs fan since they moved from Quebec when I was 10. The City is buzzing after the epic comeback so far. I think they finish off the Cats on Monday. They have broken their collective will
Blackhawks. Grew up a fan because of my father (not from Colorado). My third team is the Wild. (From up there)
Blackhawks, I'm from Chicago. I've been an Av's Fan since I was a kid.
Ottawa. We don't conflict with them much, and its easy to root for the underdog team in Canada's capital.
Nashville
#2 the blues and #3 the blue jackets.
Personally, the oilers
Avalanche are actually my 2nd favorite. Been following them since 95-96 with sakic, forsberg, Roy, etc. Flyers (local team) are unfortunately my favorite lol
Blackhawks!
Capitals. I have lived in Maryland and Virginia for almost 25 years but Denver’s teams will always have my heart. Posting this while watching Rox/Nats…
Leafs, Habs, Oilers
Colorado Avalanche
I have a few players I semi follow, currently only Brent Burns. Khabibulin back when he played for Phoenix
2nd team I root for ?? The penguins for sure love Crosby and him and Mack are best buds
Preds (I was raised a Predators fan)
The El Paso Rhinos NAHL team 🦏, with my 3rd being their NA3HL team of course
Blackhawks; I grew up in Chicago.
Don’t kill me but I’m from Michigan, Red Wings.
He is a UND alumni, and we don’t have much to cheer for here in ND, so Him and Jonathan Toews were pretty much the biggest thing around when I was in High school.
OTTAWA!!! There's a story. Never been there, and I don't know anyone who has.
Flyers. My step-dad got me into hockey in the first place, and he's from Philly. Still root for our boys in the head-to-head
Considering I'm an Avs fan living in Wisconsin? Fuck no I don't.
Hawks and don’t come after me plz
Not a second favorite team, but if the avs weren't playing, I'd watch the Kings, kraken, Golden kights, Ducks games, or any other game that seemed good
No. But I will cheer for former Avs players I like- Kadri, Bo, etc.
This year it's the Oilers.
I know this is a hot take but I've cheered on the oilers for almost as long as I have the Avs. Could not be more stoked for game 7 tonight
hawks 💯💯
Denver Spurs, followed by the real Colorado Rockies.
Anaheim ducks. They are the reason I started watching hockey and they had/have the best logo ever
found it pretty hard not to cheer for big Z and the Canucks this postseason (also I lived in Vancouver for a few years, a long time ago)
The Jets. Before you get on my case, I live by Winnipeg.
Whoever is playing Toronto that night.
Mn Wild. But I live 20 minutes from the rink. Became a Quebec fan after the Northstars left.
As an Avs fan in Oregon, I also cheer on the Portland Winterhawks.
I’m sorry but Modano stole my heart a long time ago, go stars.
TBL
My wife is a Rangers fan as is the rest of her family and we live in NY, so I root for the Rangers as well as long as the Avs aren’t involved.
One of my best friends growing up was and still is a huge Bruins fan. I hate Boston sports in general but if the Bruins are winning I know he's probably happy
Last year must have been an ouch'ers for him
