No_Joke_9079

I was looking for "Ma."

Master-Collection488

Don't call him that! He's Admiral Ackbar, and he deserves our respect as a leading member of the Rebel Alliance.

AutomaticGrab8359

It's a trap!

rogozh1n

I was picturing Ma Fratelli.

No_Joke_9079

I was picturing Ma Kettle.

ShenmueFan1

New rule!! Started April 8th, 2024, it's required to have Costco membership to order something from the food court. The change is part of Costco's efforts to ensure that the benefits and pricing of their services are exclusive to members only.

more_beans_mrtaggart

Been the case in the UK for the last 5 years.

Elcustardo

Never been checked at my local for membership.

more_beans_mrtaggart

Can’t get in the exit. They check for cards/membership.

Oakroscoe

It’s dependent upon the individual Costco. Also, a lot of the Southern California costcos have their food courts outside.

TheLadder330

Some in Florida. Ours is outside, but it’s mostly kiosk ordering and you need to scan your membership to order. Edit: wrote same, meant Some in Florida.

310410celleng

Altamonte Springs Costco food court is outside and all ordering or at least most ordering is done via a kiosk which makes you scan your membership. I get why some folks are a bit upset, it is outside, not in the store, as such it seems open to the general public and for years and years, they were happy to sell to the general public (or at least didn't check). I was buying a slice of pizza (I am member) and two cops pulled up to grab a slice. Neither was a member and both were surprised that they now needed to be members to buy food now. Another member scanned their membership for them and they got their slices. They happened to sit next to me and we chatted for a minute, they have been buying slices there since the Costco opened and neither was ever a member. One of the cops said he was going to talk to his wife about joining as they don't like BJs which his wife gets for free through her employer.

VaguelyShingled

That last paragraph…

ShowMeAllTheThingz

I want you to know, I upvoted your comment, but that took it from 69 to 70, so obviously it has to go back to 69.

ringaling11

My Costcos food court in Estero is inside and I was just there last week. The kiosk didn’t ask for my membership. Maybe it’s a slow rollout.

PhoenixRisingToday

Inside most everyone has already shown their cards.

eneka

They started enforcing it at SoCal locations too. Need to scan membership first at self checkout kiosks too

ericcartman624

Makes sense. Why should someone not paying a relatively cheap membership fee get the benefits of a subsidized hot dog and soda? The prices have remain unchanged since the mid 80s.

aaronrez

Just need to say “here for the pharmacy” to get in without a membership

PM_MeYourAvocados

Locations requiring memberships at the food court have scanners.

snackies

Given that their food court is a loss leader for them… I’m shocked this wasn’t already a rule. I bet it’s barely enforced. But they realized probably after hundreds of orders that this lady wasn’t a member and cut her off. I used to work 1 minute from a Costco. Cheapest and best lunches I’ve ever had. And it never gets old honestly.

CokeNSalsa

That’s a lady?

LenguaTacoConQueso

OP forgot an “n” on the title.

CokeNSalsa

Yes, but I was responding to @snackies who said “But they realized probably after hundreds of orders that **this lady** wasn’t a member and cut her off.” So, after OP and this person stated the person is a female, I figured I’d ask.

BigMcLargeHuge-

Prob a bot

River1stick

I did, and honestly I'm glad I did. There have been so many funny jokes because of my typo

ledgerdemaine

Thats no lady, thats his wife

synapticdecay

Dude looks like a lady? Cruised into a bar on the shore? Her picture graced the grime on the door? -AS

NWMom66

That’s no lady…

thgof2pac

Shopping at costco is a loss leader for me.

aknomnoms

It’s part of their system now — you have to scan your membership card before ordering. The ones near me have completely done away with taking orders at the windows too. Because you order off a computer, you’re forced to scan your membership card to proceed with placing and paying for the order. You just walk up to the window to show them your receipt and they hand you the food. I don’t know if their registers are now programmed like that too so the employees couldn’t bypass it even if they wanted to. If this dude asked politely, I’m sure someone in line would’ve let him use their card. But being a douche and making a scene usually doesn’t give people the warm and fuzzies about helping you out.

funnyfarm299

The amount of labor it takes to check the member IDs at food court was probably more than the amount of money they were losing selling to non-members. Now that food courts use self-checkout it's easy for corporate to flip a switch and make the member scan their own card.

Whatisatoaster

I thought I read somewhere that they actually don't lose any money on the food

PM_MeYourAvocados

70% of food courts make a profit on average. This is after ALL is added in such as pay, benefits, shrink, electric, gas, etc

noCure4Suicide

All these people talking about “loss leaders”, as if Costco doesn’t know how to squeeze profits from a hot dog. It’s hilarious really. Of course they make profit - $1.5 for a hot dog? that’s pretty much all profit.

IShipHazzo

Eh, once you factor in the employee wages, equipment maintenance, etc IDK if it's still "pretty much all profit."

megamanxoxo

Hot dogs and pizza slices would get pretty old pretty quickly

Amos_Dad

It's not optional anymore. The registers are now the same as the ones inside the store. It won't even be able to start a transaction without a membership card being scanned first. We've had them for a few years. It was kind of rough when we first rolled it out, but now it's just the way it is. It's rare to have someone get really upset about it.

enginedown

san diego locations (at least the ones i frequent) have been enforcing this since 2020

VentriTV

Crazy fucker could have just asked someone to buy it for him, but something tells me he doesn’t understand the concept of asking for help.

[deleted]

[удалено]

certciv

I mean, sure I'd buy a dude a hotdog and soda if they asked, but not after going nuts. Those food court workers bust their butts, and deserver courtesy and respect not abuse.

ConfidentMongoose874

I actually saw someone so this. He got 1 no and then a yes right after. He was polite, though.

YogurtclosetDull2380

"Psst, hey man could you buy me a hotdog, man! *Scratches arm fiendishly* I just a need a hotdog, man, c'mon man!"

aakaase

Still not true in the Twin Cities (MN). No card scanners at the kiosks. Anyone with a Visa card can order food court stuff.

LocalRepSucks

Most places have food court inside require a membership to get inside the store. This incident is most likely a California location where food courts are outside. However terminals require a card or flash a card at cash line

discerniblecricket

Not all in California have outdoor ones. But yeah some just started having the card scan requirement.

Azozel

Also in MN and you don't need a card if you go in through the exit door which is where the food court is located.

Ok_Act4459

At my local Costco it’s very easy to walk in exit

ipswitch_

I get it but that SUCKS for the workers that are going to have to deal with that. They're going to have months of angry people without memberships trying to order.

PhoenixRisingToday

Exactly. I hope at least the outdoor locations have a large sign explaining it before people get close enough to order. Not everyone will read it of course.

kpofasho1987

I just assumed you always needed a membership to do anything in Costco since they check right at the entrance and all that. What a ridiculous thing to get upset about and I'm sure if you're wanting Costco food that much that a membership would be well worth it. Also I'm sure he probably passed signs that stated this policy changing but thought "rules don't apply for me" with how he is acting and taking it out on a poor employee that had zero to do with the new policy. Can't stand when those that are just doing there job get unnecessary shit from entitled pricks

[deleted]

Oooh that’s good to know. I was about to say you don’t need a membership. Goddamn food court is still too packed and bring back the combo pizza!

Medium-Parsnip-4238

The combo pizza 😭 I miss it so much

crazyk4952

This is not universally enforced. I just purchased a pizza today at the Costco food court. I did not scan my membership card.

particle409

I'd imagine a lot of Costco warehouses aren't in places people will go to *just* for lunch. They're not worried about a few people coming in, but other locations may have a real problem.

TheMatt561

But how do they get in without showing membership?

CutthroatTeaser

It’s not difficult. Say you’re going to the pharmacy or heading to membership services.

noncongruent

And in some USA states the same applies for alcohol purchases.

Rough_Medium2878

It’s not a new rule. Been a thing since 2020-2021

NoLand4936

I didn’t know that wasn’t the rule before. I thought you always had to have a membership.

Sesemebun

The issaquah location and a few around it have started using card scanners at the entrance too. When I was younger and didn’t have a car I would pretend to be people kid and walk in behind them to get food. Can’t do that anymore I guess.

Slytherin23

Mine doesn't have membership card readers at the kiosk at all, unless that's coming soon.

TequilaAndWeed

Oh shit that’s the guy who was upset over what credit cards were accepted, actually cancelled membership, and then learning actions have consequences

River1stick

I'm going to need an explanation lol. I turned up after he already started yelling. I didn't capture him yelling at another customer to shut the fuck up. He did also mention he was going to court over this.

newaccount721

Damn he was yelling at randos too?

River1stick

Yes, the other customer had a kid too. That is about when I arrived. I assume the other customer asked him to stop yelling at the employee, and in turn got yelled at with his young son.

TequilaAndWeed

99% it’s not the guy from the other day, but he threw a similar fit in the comments. [Waaaa they wouldn’t take my card](https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/s/Io22UY1J1K)

85percentthatbitch

Just not Food Court.

lonelygalexy

Fr? Do you have a link to a post about this?

TequilaAndWeed

I shit thee not. Appears his profile may have been deleted. [Witness the meltdown](https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/s/Io22UY1J1K)

DMercenary

Lmao that one guy commenting with an image of a big ol' sign.

NotYourNat

Damn, imagine deleting your profile because of a Costco post lol

TequilaAndWeed

He was downvoted to oblivion over one comment he made … think it was -175 or something at one point. It may have been when he called the rest of us corporate bootlickers or some nonsense.

NotYourNat

He should’ve said the hot dogs aren’t even that good to really hit a nerve 😂

Old-Nefariousness556

-213 as of a few minutes ago.

justauryon

That poster really needed to untwist their panties. It’s 2024 & literally, most folks have a couple of different forms of payment. I.e. Mastercard, Visa, etc. & Costco does accept Mastercard debit. If their whole day is RuiNeD over a minor inconvenience, they need an adult to explain how the world works 😂

Old-Nefariousness556

Eh, I can understand being annoyed if you only brought the one card, especially if you aren't close to your Costco. It's quite a trek for many people. But it's still his fault, and there is a difference between being annoyed and behaving like that dude did.

Oakroscoe

How long has it been since they switched to visa? At least six or seven years.

Stunning-Test1848

What’s funny is he bought that flannel from Costco too.

john_jdm

Yeah, yell at the employee at the food court 'cause it's their fault and they have all the power. /s

OkStatistician7523

I hate when people do this!!!

Pimpy_Longstocking

Someone get Walmart Iggy Pop a hot dog

HawkeyeinDC

Sir, that’s a Kirkland brand flannel! 😘

YeshuasBananaHammock

And the real Mr. Pop is a very friendly feller.

APsWhoopinRoom

Probably because he's high AF

YeshuasBananaHammock

Cmon, he just wants to be your dog

Alive-Carrot107

At that point, they should close the little garage door until he’s gone

LNLV

I’m fascinated by the fact that they have those clear bank teller dividers! None of my costcos have that, it’s just a counter.

Alive-Carrot107

Really? I’ve never been to a Costco food court that hasn’t had them! Where are you from?

LNLV

What?! That’s crazy, I’ve lived in 4 states since having a Costco membership and none of them had the plexiglass windows! I’m currently in Colorado, it’s just a counter, you order from the kiosk then wait around the counter while they call out ticket numbers and set out food. It’s kind of like a food place in a stadium except nobody is in line bc they’ve all ordered from the self serve machines and you just jump forward when your number is called.

up2knitgood

This is an outdoor foodcourt location. All the outdoor ones I've seen are like this, but the indoor are just a counter.

DuchessOfCelery

Tall dude in scrub pants: "Goddammit I gotta get back to the ER and saving lives and fishing shit outta people's assholes already. Lemme get my damn hotdog."

OkStatistician7523

I was thinking that!! Hahaha he had no time for this BS

canon12

I don't care if he was a member or not but he should have been removed from the store immediately.

TequilaAndWeed

More fun if it were Ma going off like that … but damn regardless

H3llm0nt

Ma! The meatloaf!

TequilaAndWeed

Dammit. Now I wanna watch that movie and have meatloaf.

impostershop

Whose Ma is he anyway

_EustaceBagge

I feel bad for the food court employees. They deal with all of us including the dredges of society upfront.

tristansensei

“Ma, this is a Costco.”

NotARealWombat

Where was this? Never seen a food court corner with security windows like that at a costco before in any state I've been.

River1stick

Marina del rey, california. They open up the big windows if you order a whole pizza, otherwise you get your food through the little one. Maybe because the food court is outside, it also prevents bugs

viviolay

Oh crap, that’s my Costco. And not surprised 🙄

HI_l0la

Costco food courts in Hawaii are all outside and they all have those windows.

NotARealWombat

Oh outside makes sense... now that I think about it, I think I've seen one in California that the food court was at the entrance facing out.

wickedlabia

The only Costco in HI I’ve been too is the one Ewa Beach/Kapolei and they actually had there food court indoors!

Pchanman

Most of the California Costco's I have been to have similar looking windows

slut4burritos

Yea it’s a California thing. I’ve heard they started doing it out here because people were pulling out guns or something, that’s why they installed the bulletproof glass.

ThrowAwayAccount8334

Get these fucks out of my Costco.

ChrisinOrangeCounty

In California (not sure about other areas), we have many food courts that are outside. The lines were always huge. Now a membership is required, it really cuts down the crowds. Still busy but nowhere what it was prior to the rule.

Party_Ebb9672

Loser

D3ltaa88

Those hot dogs are reserved for us member bro, get a membership ya bum!!!!!!

CraigTennant1962

He doesn’t look like my ma.

mrwootwo

The food court is crowded enough. If members are waiting for service then it makes sense to enforce the rules.

specialk604

I'm glad that they started enforcing the membership requirement to order food. My go-to Costco food court was so busy that I didn't even bother, but once they started asking people to scan their card at the exit to get into the food court, it stopped a lot of people without memberships from entering.

Bondominator

Pull up your pants

YouDontExistt

He needs to be banned from civilization.

QuillTheQueer

Big timeout for sure

ChuckBass_08

At my local Costco you have to pre pay on the register located in the food court which requires you to scan your membership. Avoids this problem

Silentt_86

Imagine being this bent out of shape over a glizzy

TwistedBamboozler

Have you ever had one? I kind of get it /s

CanineAnaconda

I wouldn’t want to belong to a club that had him as a member.

HalfPointFive

What about a fight club?

DevylBearHawkTur10n

We DON'T TALK ABOUT fight club🤬!

eltanin_33

Dude this pressed over not getting cheap weiners

Any-Long-83

Speaking as a member, either join or get out of line. He has only himself to blame for waiting 20 minutes.

Supernova805

His face says 40 but the way he wears his pants says 18 and the way he acts says baby

ggarcia109

I don't want to pay for the membership, I just want the benefits that come with it.

Master-Collection488

I'm embarrassed to see all of the disrespect being paid to Admiral Ackbar here. He's done a lot of great things for the Rebel Alliance, if he says "It's all a trap!" I'm willing to listen to him. And whatever Mon Calamari hatchlings he's recently given birth to.

CrissBliss

Poor guy behind the counter. It’s not like the cashier is in charge of the rules of Costco.

Up-Your-Glass

The $1.50 hot dog deal brings out the passion in people!

Chewy85

What an entitled piece of shit

seattlereign001

A membership is $99. If you cannot afford it, you cheap fuck, get wrecked.

AliGreen13sCPSworker

Why would you be in a members only club without a membership anyway?! Move along sir goodbye

Reputation-Final

Food court needs to have the floor electrified. So when someone does this t hey can just press a button with the area they are standing on and make them no longer part of the gene pool

UncleNedisDead

I’m fine with a trap door that opens with the push of a button and drops them below ground. NEXT!

Reputation-Final

Drop into a tank filled with sharks with freakin' lazer beams attached to their heads

evilanimator1138

Costco Rancors and the “below ground” area is not to be spoken of. You agreed to this when you signed up for your membership. Now that everybody knows, Costco Rancors be eating tonight.

heeheehoho2023

Springboard that shoots them to the closest Walmart

EntrepreneurLucky222

At the Costcos near me in OC, CA you have to scan your membership and order off of a kiosk then take your receipt to the counter after standing in line. I always see people upset after waiting in the long line just to find out they had to go through the kiosk first. There is a window at the end though for the members that only have cash and can't pay with card on the kiosk.

River1stick

That is exactly how this is set up in the vid, as this is also in socal. That was the cash line.

pb_and_lemon_curd

I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it I'm about to lose control and I think I like it I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I want you to stay out of my Costco without a membership

chaddgar

Now watch my sister as she points you to the exit!

TequilaAndWeed

That guy was doing his own neutron dance

Njtotx3

Ma! Don't do that!

DifficultyHour4999

You guys need your cash register and food staff behind plexiglass? I now see why... brutal.

River1stick

I think it might be because this food court is outside, so it may be mostly to prevent bugs.

DifficultyHour4999

Makes sense... still came in handy

etherealhooplah

Some people haven’t been punched and it shows

River1stick

Obviously the title was meant to be 'man refused service', but I'm loving all the jokes spawned by my typo.

lewisfairchild

I was looking for ma for a long time 😂

ToxicGems

Everyone just standing there watching him abuse the worker

AbaloneBoth4503

Funny how it's always middle aged white people doing this shit, the entitlement is mind blowing

Im_Ashe_Man

That's me ma!

PhotoJoeCA

Who's ma is that?

bupped

Sad to see no one intervening. I couldn't live with myself knowing I just let someone get yelled at like that.

teacherslashassassin

Why do I get a feeling that it gets good after the video cuts off?

Imispellalot2

How did he make it that far into the store? Typically, they check for membership cards at the entrance.

OOIIOOIIOOIIOO

At all of the Costcos near me in SoCal the food court is outside.

Impossible_Town3351

https://preview.redd.it/gqu0zalug5bd1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c50ddd188867cc6002966d38b43f866070e17b8f

NotThat1guy

You can thank TikTok and Reels for causing Costco to tighten up and require more membership checks.

Send_More_Bears

r/boomersbeingfools

Lainarlej

Why do people think yelling at someone is going to get them what they want?

MaxPower836

This guy was at Jan 6 for sure

Rojo37x

Guess who he's voting for in November...

AfrezzaJunkie

It's cause the guys black lol

gigitee

This is my local Costco as well. If you think this guy is bad, check out my post a few weeks back about the apple guy...

reluctant-rheubarb

All these "men" here and no one could stand up for the employee getting abused?

Javeyn

Yeah I dont wanna get shot over a hot dog. This is America, and that "lead headed boomer" looks like he's waiting for an excuse to exercise his "2nd amendment rights"

dr_jch18

Oh yeah.. that little teenager behind the counter selling hotdogs is on a HUGE power trip... "NO HOTDOG FOR YOU!!"

[deleted]

newaccount721

Yeah I think Texas law prohibits needing membership for alcohol too

Low-Opportunity2249

In CT they changed it. You used to not have to show your card till a year or so ago.

Top-Suggestion-7085

CA liquor law may prevent Costco from requiring membership to buy booze. For example, one cannot return a bottle of liquor, beer, wine due to these same laws.

LNLV

I think in some (all maybe?) states the pharmacy is open to the public, but that’s it as far as I know in my state.

tucrahman

Ugh. Hope he goes to Sam's.

peter303_

In Sheridan Colorado Costco, food is ordered from a screen with valid membership card.

Grouchy-Play-4726

Funny watching babies having a meltdown.

-SasnaTsrer-

Is this in van Nuys I think I seen this guy before lol

Tim-in-CA

But, Ma rights!

sundvl13

You want to go to war Balakè?!

nogoodnickgames

Sounds like Bret Hart bitching about Bill Goldberg

iTokeOldMan

In Mexico the food court tablets require you to scan your membership before you can order. They should just make that change in the US

onlyAlcibiades

Hangry and hostile

stonercyclist

Is this in Culver City, CA?

CryptographerHot4636

Good!

viviolay

Is it me or is that guy claiming he’s getting help cause “this guy’s black!” I haven’t seen a comment mention it so I’m wondering if I’m hearing things

newaccount721

He is claiming the black guy is allowed to order due to being black. He is creating some bizarre conspiracy theory as opposed to the fact black dude just has a Costco membership card

viviolay

Okay - I wasn’t sure if all the comments were just ignoring the casual racism or if I was hearing things. Thanks for letting me know I’m not losing it.

Jimmyjohnssucks

Damn I didn’t know that was new rule. Honestly it was nice going to Costco after school as a kid and grabbing an affordable bite.

slogive1

Fruit loop there.

Donald96792

You needed a membership at the Hawaii locations for at least a few years now. The other ones I’ve been to in the USA haven’t had to scan membership though.

Stardust_Particle

Take his photo from a security camera to decline membership if he applies for it.

SecureAd1100

Love that old mate in the scrubs stepped in to help. No one deserves that amount of abuse! And if he was a member and acted like that I would hope that his membership would be terminated! Our local Costco doesn’t check membership at the food court counter but you can’t get in unless you are a member or with someone who is…

sogregarious

Why is it always the older generation of the lighter skin

Fine-Touch-6037

Just go to Sam's. You can order from their food station without a membership, still.

Whatsuptodaytomorrow

Nope They scan the sams club card on ur phone before they punch in the order at the food court

Vairman

someone needs a hug.
