That same situation happened with Thomas Harris. He didn't want to write another Hannibal Lecter book but they were going to make a prequel with or without him. So he vomited out Hannibal Rising. I didn't know about this when I read it. I was a huge fan of the Lecter books so bought it around it's release... But I just couldn't finish it, it was really bad.
Ok well it was still a bad movie. She didn't do herself any favors by making it like she did. Maybe if the Wachowskis had made better movies after the Matrix series (which, tbh, the sequels weren't all that great), then ... maybe she could have gotten away with it. Exploring the Matrix universe in a similar vein to Animatrix would be amazing. I think the Neo storyline has well run its course. Tell me more about the war, the architect, the oracle. Explore the other characters. I would eat that up.

Matrix Explained does a great job of gaslighting you into believing that 2 and 3 were actually good movies. If nothing else, it seems like a lot of thought was put into them. They just weren't very. . . Fun.
I feel the same way about Revolutions. The bane fight scene is more tense and more dramatic than anything in Reloaded and has actual consequences. The Sunlight breakthrough scene is otherwordly. The final fight is peak in terms of special effects. Reloaded spent too much time avoiding the plot for me to appreciate anything but the soundtrack.
This is the mindset that people need to adopt.
Hollywood is never going to stop making shitty sequels or remakes. Just enjoy the movies you enjoy and ignore the rest.

I just finished rewatching the trilogy before watching the 4th one last weekend. The 4th was... absolutely terrible. Worst movie I've ever seen. What in the 50 first dates did I watch? And what a disney movie ending that was! Zero payoff! I've heard some theories that say all this was intentional and was satire. If that's the case, I think it failed even at that. But, I can't really take that theory seriously when they did establish a new crew and share some details about the state of things now. Doesn't fit the tone of the "the whole thing is satire!" arguments. I could see the beginning for sure though.
If they make a 5th one, I think they should leave Neo and Trinity out of it unless they really find a way to nail it. They should have died legends. I'd be interested in a new crew, even the same crew from the 4th. There's still plenty of interesting things to explore in the matrix universe.
