All speculation, especially the one that happened last night. The post were never suppose to be there to begin with. Other states with way more and successful HOV implementations don’t have posts. The ones on 75 was a constant source of collisions. Years of data back that up. Removing the posts is a good thing. They should have better signage to let inattentive drivers know the ramp is coming up.

swamp_donkey89

The posts are terrible. I always hated when a disable car was in that lane and you would have to feel like you were fucking your car up to leave that lane because of it.

Kathw13

I was attacked by one of those posts. Randomly hit my car.

dfwpopo

Not driving drunk also prevents fatalities like that wreck...

MC_ScattCatt

I agree. However, drunk drivers will find a way to injure others no matter how much protection is in place.

AbueloOdin

Maybe if we provided ample alternatives to driving while drunk, that would help. For example, I can stumble to a nearby bar and crawl back from one.  Thus my proposal: a corner bar for every neighborhood!

boldjoy0050

That's why I almost never go out to drink here. You have to drive everywhere and then when you get there pay for parking and worry about whether your car will be safe. Uber is an option but I've had trouble getting Ubers from some places and often times there's a surge so a 20min Uber ends up being $45.

AwakenTheAegis

You don’t have to be an asshole every day of the week.

Specialist_Listen495

It’s crazy driving that causes these wrecks on 75. Passed two wrecks in the last two days in my Allen to Richardson commute that had to have been fatal ones. Early morning when almost no traffic. Seems like the light traffic allows the weaving in and out with some people going 65 and others going 85 that you see the most accidents.

Sight_Distance

That corridor needs to be reconstructed. It’s designed for slower than posted speed, has narrow shoulders, narrow lanes, and poor stopping sight distance around curves and over hills. It’s also way over capacity today and will only get worse. The pylons didn’t do anything really. They were constantly being hit, and they weren’t effective since many drivers would just change lanes between them.

omar_strollin

The changes you’re advocating for would cause the reckless driving to worsen. Wide streets encourage speeding

Sight_Distance

The statistics show otherwise. The most dangerous roadways are the ones that do not meet minimum freeway design criteria. On a freeway in Dallas, people are going to drive 75 80 on average. This one is designed for around 55.

omar_strollin

Source?

Sight_Distance

Just google search for causes of unsafe freeways. One of the top is construction zones, which inherently use reduced design criteria. ASHTO also does countless studies to determine appropriate criteria, so there’s tons of data. If you’re bored and want to dig in to specifics, do a deep dive into Crash Modification Factors. You can look at specific criteria and various studies that were done on each that outlines their impact. Years and years of data - it’s what governs Civil Engineering for transportation projects.

Lyuseefur

They are spending billions on the 635 - and it’s a nightmare to drive right now. Please don’t let them anywhere near the 75. I dread the nightmare that is to come. Just fix the HOV madness with some paint and call it good for now. Insane drivers will be everywhere until we can get self driving cars working properly.

Sight_Distance

Growing pains are a part of urban living. Unfortunately, kicking the can is what got us to this situation. This corridor should have been improved years ago. It takes many years to plan - design - NEPA - construct a project, during that time traffic doesn’t get better.

playballer

I avoid 75 north of 635, the way people drive is next level even by DFW standards.

SensualOilyDischarge

None of that is the fault of the posts, that’s just stupid motherfuckers behind the wheel. The entire time I lived in AZ I got to see what’s real HOV lane solution looked like. Just another lane on the far left of the highway with diamonds painted on it. No barriers and, amazingly, no problems with spontaneous crashes or hoards of people misusing the HOV lane. Crazy how treating people like adults works.

cataphoresis

Same way in Georgia.

Soggy-Bedroom-3673

We didn't have the HOV posts originally. Can't recall when they were added exactly but they didn't exist while I was growing up here, and when I started driving. There were an attempt to address people abusing the lane by dipping into it to get around a slow spot of traffic, but it was always a half assed attempt because they made them the type you can drive over if need be -- so of course the type of asshole that's going to abuse the lane is going to be willing to trample over the plastic sticks and continue doing so.

cactusflinthead

They aren't coming back either. Better get used to it  https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/txdot-to-remove-pylon-barriers-on-highway-75-as-work-begins-to-overhaul-hov-lanes/3479377/

IranianLawyer

The crash in that article was at 2am, fam. I doubt it was HOV related.

slope93

Those posts didn’t stop half of the shitty drivers from weaving in and out. Let alone having to leave because someone in the HOV got in a wreck already. Removing them is still the best decision

Anon_Bourbon

I was gonna say that part of 75 has literally always had that issue. 8a on any given morning you'd have a line of trucks blowing over the poles to merge at the last second.

bademployeesarebad

There were constant wrecks in the same location with the barriers in place. My favorite was when people would come to a complete stop in the HOV there to wait for a traffic break to leave the HOV across the pylons.

belindasmith2112

Not a Huge Mistake-!!! I don’t know one large or even small city that has these outdated and highly dangerous barriers- Removing them actually saves lives since EMERGENCY Units can get to people faster by allowing drivers to exit the HOV lanes.

Educational-Ruin9992

Should turn that divider in a giant metal catcher’s mitt. Run a hydrant out there, easy pick up and cleanup.

redemem

Those poles sucked ass and caused several accidents or near accidents and traffic issues pretty much every day. These accidents near that area are happening because drivers are idiots trying to exit that HOV lane at the last second, not because there's no longer those useless poles. Source: I commute on 75 several days a week.

Whole_Blacksmith3160

I always called the post, whiskers.

Cold_Customer898

This thread is a huge mistake
