I have so many opinions about the show, but one thing I can say is that a true fan should’ve written the show. It had so much potential but the ego of the show runner kind of ruined it. I liked the first season the best, after Larry died it went downhill quickly.

Weird-Awareness3377

Did you ever go on the fan fiction site, return to southfork? The people who wrote that should’ve written the reboot

Appropriate_Cover_84

Tbh the actors were good but it felt more loose ,they missed out on opportunity like swap john ross who like Bobby and Christopher is more like jr, how Bobby handle his son compared to Jr. Bring jenna in to it with lucas who like Gary, tension it brings to Bobby and Anna marriage. Recast pam briefly who everyone learns is dying and revelation that she had a daughter named Eleanor who turns out be Bobby daughter. John ross sister turns out be kathrine daughter from Jr who called Rebecca. Gary son ( Bobby) brings his new wife to Southfolk who called pam ( Easter egg from oringal series) and plus she cliff daughter. They could bring in margaret who is lawyer, Bessie who married to punk Anderson grandson. James comes back with Debra lyn and their clan of children ready fight . Cally and Jr son comes into and is gay and has forbidden love with carter mckay grandson ( like Bobby & pam). The Ewings could have a new feud with carter mckay grandchildren.

RickWest495

That’s a lot in there. But I like they you tied it all to the characters of the original show and brought in some modern themes. Good job.

Weird-Awareness3377

At the very least, I think it would have been best if Victoria principal would agree to a recurring role. Like Ken Kercheval except not keep her in one room the whole time like he was in the prison cell. He probably just wants to do the show part time. She could’ve appeared in three or four episode per year, with a purpose, to create some conflict, perhaps having a personality change after her accident and maybe not being so goody-goody. But it would’ve been good to have her presence on the series. Whether it was Victoria principal or recast, I think Pam was in the central character. without her I just was never the

Appropriate_Cover_84

Ohh pam could same brain damage after accident reason why she not as clean cut. Apart from Jr she was second important character ,she was the link

[deleted]

It was clear that Cidre never watched the original series and had no understanding of the characters beyond some extreme Wikipedia level basics. The 20 years in between were never fully fleshed out and it was obvious. Way too many things were counter to canon from the original series - she created her own show loosely based on the original. You can’t do that with a saga like Dallas and call it a continuation. The later years and the two reunion movies might not have been great (JR Returns wasn’t bad but WOTE was a disaster) but just disregarding the movies and playing fast and loose with so much from the second half of the original series was bad. Plus, who were half the damn people they showed every week? They did a terrible job making me care about the new characters. It was a total shame

RickWest495

I totally agree. They already had the dream season to forget. Did Pam come back to life dream the movies too? She should have taken all the facts and built a story from there.

Weird-Awareness3377

They never confirmed that Pam died. She told Cliff she was dying. And we saw her talk to her doctor about it. But remember, Katherine Wentworth was seen leaving her hospital room, and then had power of attorney. So she could’ve hired a doctor to tell Pam she was dying, etc. And the movie sucked so bad that I’m actually glad they ignored the plots from them. They were absolutely ridiculous. They reminded me more of the Dukes of Hazzard than the original Dallas. In fact, once Larry Hagman took over as coexecutive producer, the show became a lot more campy and almost half comedy. I understand why he was trying to go for that because it seemed like the prime time soap was dying at the time. And he had experience as a comedic actor. Maybe he thought it was a niche market that they should try. But I think that was another thing that ruined the show. It was just too campy be at the end

RickWest495

In the sequel, they confirmed that Pam died in 1989 from pancreatic cancer. I think the original show hoped they could lure her back. Then the producers of the sequel tried everything to lure her back. They finally wrote in her death when it became clear that she wasn’t coming back. But imagine the press they would have received if she did appear in the sequel.

Weird-Awareness3377

Yes, but they did that whole road herring storyline making us think she was alive. Only to end a very anti-climactic there with that. I think they were actually trying to get VP to reappear at least on recurring basis or considering recast. It was all a big disappointment. If you’re talking about the movies after the first run of the series, I’m glad to ignore those because they were ridiculous

CockroachMediocre346

I always thought a good twist make John Ross like Bobby and Christopher like JR watch Bobby struggle that his son was do much like his brother that it used to scare him

DingoNo4205

I thought the same thing, especially since Christopher’s birth parents were nasty humans. It would have been so much more interesting.

Weird-Awareness3377

Cynthia Cidre must never have watched the original series. Why create so many new characters? And why bring back such a minor characters that nobody cared about in the first place, like Tracy McKay? Not only that, she was a recast! There were plenty of preestablished next generation characters on the original series that should have been used. All of them would’ve been anywhere from their 20s to their 40s, the perfect age range. They include: Charley Wade, James Richard Beaumont, J.R. Beaumont Jr, Margaret Krebs, Lucas Wade Krebs, Cally & JR’s son. It is highly likely that JR could have fathered a child with Mandy Winger. Lucy could easily have had a baby with Mitch who could’ve been somewhere in their teens or early 20s. The only established next generation characters that were used with John Ross, Christopher, and Pamela Rebecca Barnes. Another issue is the Ramos family. Everyone knows that Raul and Theresa were the main staff at Southfork. We never knew their last name, to the best of my recollection, so it could have been Ramos. But Cynthia decided to make Maria Ramos their housekeeper and forget about Raul and Theresa. Why not just have made them the Ramos family, and then Elena could’ve been their daughter? It didn’t add up. Why I have Gary and Val guest star? Dallas enough learning sever ties after the dream season. They were absolutely useless on there. It was an insult to the viewers and to Steve Kanaly, Charlene Tilton, Audrey Landers (except for one episode), and any other legacy actors when they were used as a little more than props or extras. Charlene got one good scene, otherwise she was basically an extra. Victoria principal’s refusal to reprise her role as Pam was very disappointing to most people, and in my opinion, very insensitive on her part. She was able to have the career she did selling her cosmetics and books because of her notoriety in Dallas. They were offering her a recurring role, she should’ve taken it. Or else they should’ve recast. Margaret Michaels did an excellent job playing her in the season premiere of the 1987-88 season, as well as lookalike Jeanne O’Brien in six episodes later. Jaclyn Smith could’ve been a good choice also. I hate the way they toyed with us about her possibly being alive and then ending that plot abruptly. Using the actual inside of the real Southfork instead of a set was a bad idea. People remember what the house looked like in the original series. They could have used the downstairs in the real South work, and the difference is could’ve been explained with a remodel. The upstairs looked nothing like what we knew from the original series. The bedrooms were absolutely tiny and completely unbelievable. Why was Cliff Barnes kept in a Mexican prison and only showing in a handful of episodes? That was an insult to Ken Kercheval and to the viewers. If he only wanted a part-time role, they could’ve given him a more exciting, interesting thing to do them sit in dingy cell. Another option to bring him back Victoria principal or recasting Pam could have been to bring April back. We never did see the body, and it could’ve been that she was being held hostage by Susan Lucci’s character all these years. She could’ve returned and that would’ve definitely start of drama between Bobby and Annie. I did like the character of Ann, and I think Brenda strong was an excellent addition to the cast. One of the only good choices Cynthia made. She killed the shower. And the series finale, with Christophers car blowing up and then presumed dead was a terrible insult to everybody who ever watch that series. Basically almost ruined the legacy of the entire show. I can’t believe they couldn’t even give us a two hour movie wrapped up and resolve some things. What a tragedy because it could’ve been so good. There were some great fanfiction years ago. A site called return to SouthFork. The people who wrote for that so it should’ve been hired to be the executive producers and rotors for the reboot, it probably would’ve been a much greater success

SuperKarateMonkeyDC

Everything you mentioned is 100% accurate. I just don’t understand what they were trying to do. This shows IP was huge, but they decided to ignore a lot of it. It really seems as though the producers did not know the original show at all. Cynthia Cidre then steered this show into a Mexican mob show. So odd. David Jacobs was all in as a consultant, but Cidre and company simply ignored him. He created the show! How do you not take him up on his offer?! (https://www.showbiz411.com/2012/06/12/looming-dallas-disaster-how-shows-creator-was-cut-out-of-reboot). Cliff Barnes acting so out of character. Plus he adopted a kid who then became is right hand man…. What!? Utterly ridiculous.

Weird-Awareness3377

Totally preposterous. At first I thought it was lame of Victoria principal not to at least do some recurring appearances but I think she made the right decision after all

RickWest495

I agree with every single thing you wrote. Great analysis.

Weird-Awareness3377

Watched the season finale of season eight, then skipped season nine, and watched the premiere of season 10 this evening. They did a great job except for allowing some actors to grow their hair out more. Washing this way I was like the dream was simply the last scene of the last episode of season eight. I recommend watching the series again and skipping the dream season. Lol. Such a shame that Cynthia ruined the reboot! I would rather have had Angelica Nero and Matt Cantrell been on the show than some of the characters she created lol

RickWest495

I skipped the dream season also. The only characters I noticed changing were John Ross and Christopher. Obviously the actors grew. But both were so good that I am glad they didn’t replace them.

Weird-Awareness3377

Exactly. In my opinion, it was not only Victoria principal’s departure, but the way they wrote him off the show, that ruined it. Pam never would’ve left Christopher and Bobby simply because she has scars and burns.

[deleted]

Quite honestly, in hindsight, the way Katzman and company handled Victoria’s 1987 departure really destroyed Dallas in every incarnation. The last four seasons never were up to snuff, the reunion movies were weak (JRR being far superior to WOTE), and the 2012 reboot suffered immensely from continuing to build upon the BS that the writers did with Pam after VP left in 1987. Pam would have never abandoned Bobby and Christopher. NEVER. Nothing at all in the 1986-87 season would indicate it, let alone the whole 9 years of Pam we witnessed. They were already 9 or 10 (depending on how you want to count) years into the show at that point and should have simply killed her in the accident. VP was steadfast that she wasn’t returning and although Patrick said the same, by that point there really was no purpose in stringing the situation out how they did.

Weird-Awareness3377

I agree completely. They should’ve recast Pam. Margaret Michael’s did an excellent job and I was very disappointed when Jeanne O’Brien turned out not to be Pam. The only saving grace for the last several seasons and I mean maybe the two seasons after VPs departure, to me, was Sheree J. Wilson’s her chemistry with Patrick Duffy. I had the honor and privilege of interviewing her silver years ago. She is such a sweetheart

[deleted]

Count me as an April supporter too. I actually thought her and Bobby made sense. But Pam should’ve been killed off to eliminate the specter of Pam that hung over the show in those later years as well as the reunions and 2012 series. It was the main loose end for the audience that impacted everything including Bobby’s future relationships. I would NEVER have killed off April. What an absolute stupid short sighted thing to do. And shoehorning Susan Lucci into that stupid story. And all those episodes in Paris. It was everything that Dallas should’ve never been.

Weird-Awareness3377

Here’s the interview I did with Sheree back in 2014: https://open.spotify.com/episode/70wHsvYDNV3rlVSYLcFDbl?si=xs9NAcXLS2awEH4cd5fQ0g Ignore the opening commercial in Spanish. I have no idea why that is

Weird-Awareness3377

Sheree knew it was the last season and was going to go on maternity leave, and was only scheduled to do 10 episodes. They ended up killing her off in the fifth episode which was her idea. Then she appeared as a ghost in the others. Knowing it was the end of the series, she wanted a memorable death scene. I think it one soap opera digest award for best death scene ever at that point in time. And the interview I do with her, she said she regretted it in the show came back. But then I told her my idea that we never did see the body and itself, so they could’ve always brought her back. She liked it. She and Brenda strong are good friends and she liked the character of Anne with Bobby. Brenda Strong was one of the only new additions to the show and the reboot that I liked. I think the character of Emma have potential as well and I think they brought in her ex-husband to be the new JR but I would never work.

External-Recipe-1936

Plus, they should’ve brought back Katherine. So many wasted opportunities, but of course, the real drama was whether Pam would come back.

Weird-Awareness3377

Exactly. We never got answers about her involvement in Pam’s disappearance and why she had power of attorney, etc. My theory was that they were going to get Victoria principal back or recast, and explain it by saying that Katherine had her kidnapped or kidnapped her herself, and kept her hostage, perhaps even going as far as a higher doctor to make her think she was dying. And then maybe held her for so long that she had a brainwashed and Pam had amnesia and personality change or something. It seems like Cynthia was so unfamiliar with the show that I was afraid Matt Kentrell and Angelica Nero we’re gonna come back as if they weren’t part of the dream

External-Recipe-1936

I agree exactly with what you said about Katherine. So many wasted opportunities. I could’ve written a way better story!

misterme212

You basically said everything i was going to say but let's also add JR'S other son James as well whose own son would have been a young adult at that point.

RickWest495

I hated the whole story with James. But JR could have easily had multiple other children out there.

Weird-Awareness3377

Good chance he and Mandy Winger had one and she left pregnant without telling him.. Also remember he had a baby with Callie that we never knew the name of

Weird-Awareness3377

Exactly. And he could’ve had more kids at that point. I never understood with all of those legacy characters in the right age range for the show why they only use three and created all these others that were totally disconnected and rewrote history. Why couldn’t Elena have been Teresa and Raul’s daughter? As if we didn’t remember who the Ewing’s house managers were… It was really insulting to the audience and to the original cast. And the way the end of the series was an insult to Larry Hagman himself. He owed him and us at least a two hour movie to wrap it up. Screw TNT

montauk6

I will say I had a rough time buying Judith Light as Mitch Pileggi’s mom. That was an Olympian taffy pull!

External-Recipe-1936

And that dummy Cynthia Cidre almost defiantly refused to honor old characters, her ego was severe.

RickWest495

I give Cynthia Cidre credit for fighting to get the show on the air. But I had the following problems. They brought Ray and Lucy back to basically just stand around together. Family functions. All I could think of was them having sex in the hayloft in the early shows. I know they didn’t know that they were uncle and niece at the time but it was always creepy to see them together. Also, how did Christopher turn from a white kid with freckles to a Latino guy? Why did they ignore the two TV movies? Were those dreams as well?

-Swampthing-

Not sure you if knew Jesse Metcalfe isn’t Latino. He is of English, Irish, French, and Italian descent on his father's side, while his mother is of Italian and Portuguese descent. No connection to Latin America or Spain. He did play the role of a Latino on Passions but he’s white.

RickWest495

Interesting. Christopher was played by a very very white little boy and both Kristin and the father were very white as well. Jesse just didn’t look like who that little boy would have grown up to be. The casting of John Ross was a little more realistic. There were many ways that Cynthia Cidre did not follow the story of the original show. The character of Elena Ramos didn’t exist on the original show. And it’s hard to believe she was just “off screen” and the daughter of some never shown cook. It would have been more realistic if she was the daughter of Theresa, the maid and Raul. The show strayed too far from the original.

Weird-Awareness3377

Well to be fair, those TV movies were pretty terrible and I'm kind of glad they ignored those plots for the most part. I never thought Jesse Metcalfe was right for Christopher and he always looked older than John Ross for some reason to me anyway

montauk6

Maybe I'm in the minority here but I think after JR died, the show did kind of pick up steam and finally removed the training wheels. And JUST WHEN IT GOT REALLY GOOD, the cancelled the S.O.B.

RickWest495

I think the reboot didn’t have enough connection to the original show. When JR died, it turned into a different show. Ratings proved that people lost interest.

RefuseMany1770

I think it should be retconned. Ugh.

Appropriate_Cover_84

I would like to seen reboot rather than continuation, I would casted patrick duffy as jock ,linda grey as Mrs Ellie and Steve Kanaly as digger

RickWest495

There was a movie reboot in development for a while, but it never happened. They had John Travolta as Jr and Jennifer Lopez as Pam. It never made it out of development. I think that would have been awful.

DemonSpaceCat4

By this point, I now imagine Dallas as a multiverse. The original series, up to the episode Swan Song, is one universe. Then all of the other incarnations we have seen may include familiar characters and storylines, but are not necessarily part of that same universe. And the 2012 series is definitely NOT part of the original universe. But it was awesome to see Hagman, Kercheval, Gray, and Duffy together again
