Once China stopped buying our plastic recyclables for at least a few years some facilities were reportedly taking all of their collected recycled plastics and after sorting and holding them for a while rerouting them to landfills when they ran out of space.

Yeah this was last night at the Australian International Airshow held at Avalon Airport in Victoria. It’s the final display for the night and finalises a combat simulation display. Shortly before this, a C-130J Hercules flew by and dropped the angel flares.
Avalon airport is nowhere near forest, it’s in the middle of paddocks (note:I am aware of the risk of grass fires) in the middle of nowhere. It’s also a tiiiiiny airport, and has the airshow every year. This would have been incredibly well planned.
People get real mad over here for governments continuing to use fireworks when there are other modern options for spectacular shows. I'm mad looking at this and knowing the fire dangers over here

This is in a controlled environment, under strict conditions, in a cleared area in an airport.
We do have total fire ban days which prevent us even using a gas (propane for those outside AUS) BBQs. These are depending on the weather conditions of the day and are wide broadcast. Most people understand what not to do when and where though.
Generally speaking, one-off events like this have a negligible impact on the environment. You should be outraged at plastic straws or tuna fishing instead.

FWIW, it was pretty amazing to witness in real life. The wall is pretty far away and you can feel the heat like it’s right next to you. It was a very memorable experience…albeit at the time I did not think about the environmental impact.

During WW2, the Brits started a project called FIDO (Fog Investigation Dispersal Operation). Basically, they did exactly this except with fuel lines running up and down alongside the runways of bomber airfields. The reason for this project was Britain is so heavily fog-bound that the bombers returning from missions might be able to find their local airfields or emergency airfields but couldn't land due to the fog. Typically, if they were lucky, they'd get diverted to another field reasonably nearby with little to no fog (very rare) or more frequently get sent to offshore and told to bail out and wait for AirSea Rescue to show up. Obviously, not great choices if your plane is low on fuel, damaged, or have injured crew.
So FIDO was set up to burn vast quantities of aviation gas vapors along the runway edge piping allowing aircrew to see the flame and then the runway because the heat would lift the fog up off the runway. Very costly though not difficult to implement, it saved a lot of aircrew lives and planes too. Flying into such a runway was apparently not a big deal as there was only a brief bump of air over the threshold and everything else was like a well-lit night landing.
We (US) used it up in the Aleutians, Whidbey Island, and Northern CA. No longer in use obviously since we have advanced electronics and lighting systems to support night/inclement weather landings.
