Well, wasn't Lovecraft scared in general? I remember reading somewhere he had like bad anxiety or was scared of things in his mind? Ugh I'll try to find the article..
[guess he was just a scaredy-cat ](https://nilanjanaroy.com/2006/10/29/lovecrafts-phobias/comment-page-1/)
One of the only animals that doesn't have iron based blood. Almost everything on the planet has iron in their blood except octopus, squid and a few crustaceans. Almost as if they evolved separate from the rest of earth. Maybe another planet perhaps
Every time I watch this, Im mouth agape cause wtf?! That shit dont make sense!!!! When they made an alien an octopus in Resident Alien I was like finally! Someone who gets it! lol
I believe there are species of whale that have copper based blood, myoglobin, instead of hemoglobin. It is because myoglobin bonds to oxygen atoms faster than hemoglobin, reducing the amount of time the whale has to be at the surface
Im no expert, but I've worked with a lot of marine biologists. I don't think this is true at all. Things that diverged from mammals a long while before have that and it's obvious by them having blue or green blood i beleive, Mammals are much later and closely related.
Whales have some.crazy ass adaptations for living in the ocean, but I think a divergence that extreme was well before mammals, or at least happened before we split from whatever has that.
As far as the video, you either need to kill an octopus immediately, or let them go, because they will get away given enough time and im sure the interim isn't fun for them. Too smart too dick around humanly. Kill or toss back.
Yes, it's impressive that it can squeeze through a hole that's as big as it's beak.
I'm much more impressed that it recognized the hole on the corner of the ship as an exit directly into the ocean from a distance. Provided, it knows that it just came from the ocean, and that's what's in any given direction, but still. Damn smart little alien creatures.
I think it probes the water with the first tentacle out first.
So it recognized a way out and checked it was a valid escape route, when most other species just go opposite to danger.
I don't know how octopuses process visuals, let alone outside of water, the substance they need to live.
Most humans get pretty dumb if you remove their air and watch them scramble for it too, so I've heard.
The confusion comes from how we pluralize some Latin words ending in -us to -i in English. But 'octopus' comes from the Greek, so we can either pluralize it as they would have (*octopodes*) or, in English, we can simply add -es: *octopuses*. English is a bit ridiculous, mostly because it's stolen words from everywhere!
Ahem borrowed. It’s the effect of hundreds of years of cultural interchange. In Greek it’s χταπόδι
Οχτώ + πόδια. The plural would be χταπόδια. I really appreciate your care with this nuance. That level of precision is one of my favorite things about German speakers and the German language in general.
It seems like octopus are not in line with evolution. Like every other animal or fish makes sense. But what did octopus evolve from? Keep in mind I am not a biologist or even educated beyond high school.
Yes, they mainly evolved from Nautilus like animals, that lost their shell. Since they are not Mammals or reptiles their intelligence is very different, with all limbs and nerves being almost like independent brains. Evolution is wild when you start looking beyond the regular Mammalian biology.
Octopus are about as far away on the evolutionary tree as possible from us, I'm pretty sure. Our last common ancestor is so far back they're basically aliens.
A quiz question once enlightened me that the hole an octopus can squeeze through is only limited by the size of it's eyeballs. It's the only part of the body that can't be stretched/minimized.
I very rarely eat octopus and never go out of my way to do so, but honestly I might avoid it entirely after watching this. They are so damn smart, impressive, and honestly kind of adorable in their own way.
Ikr I felt jealous watching this too like imagine being able to do that. Life is so crazy. It reminds me of our tongues, how we can make them thin and flat or thick and pointy depending how we move them
They are amazing. There's brilliant footage of them changing their skin colour and texture in a split second, to look like something entirely different.
This hole is too big for them. All they need is a hole big enough for their beak to go through. Rest all they manage. These guys are legit aliens and my favorite sea animals.
Check this article out. These things are fascinating and really intelligent!
https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/2017/mar/28/alien-intelligence-the-extraordinary-minds-of-octopuses-and-other-cephalopods
If the eyes can go through, the rest will folllow. They're even able to test/measure using their eyes if they will fit or not, and choose between too small / large enough holes.
They are one of my favourite animals. It's hard because they're damn cool, but they also freak me the fuck out. I think it's a mix of how they move, and the amount of arms reminds me of spiders which i'm terrified of. Same with crabs.
And we’re trying to find aliens by looking *up*.
No kidding. These things are so freaking alien! Totally amazing creatures.
No wonder Lovecraft was scared shitless

The color gray and non-euclidean geometry made me laugh
he was not gonna be dinner :D

Technically, we are the weird new aliens. This was their planet 550 million years ago.
Every time I watch this, Im mouth agape cause wtf?! That shit dont make sense!!!! When they made an alien an octopus in Resident Alien I was like finally! Someone who gets it! lol

I believe I have misspoken. Whales have a higher amount of myoglobin compared to hemoglobin, but still have hemoglobin. My mistake lol
TFTD

And also it spat out the shrimp/lobster so it could fit through the hole, it understands object size and problem solving
Didnot catch that the first time
Gave it the ole Hawk Tuah.
Have you ever seen the video of an octopus escaping from a sealed jar with the lid screwed down? 😮
I think it probes the water with the first tentacle out first. So it recognized a way out and checked it was a valid escape route, when most other species just go opposite to danger.
That's even more impressive to me! I think that octopus might be smarter than me.
Yeah super impressive, but could it not get over the gunnel of the boat?
It could but it made a decision and stands by it...
Going up doesn't guarantee a down later. Imagine if that boat was tied to a skyscraper, Mr octopus would climb forever.
So you think the low height of the gunnel was not visible from the perspective of the octopus? (no sarcasm here)
I don't know how octopuses process visuals, let alone outside of water, the substance they need to live. Most humans get pretty dumb if you remove their air and watch them scramble for it too, so I've heard.
"So you've heard" Nice save there
Going up would make it more visible to predators?
Did you just invent a perpetual motion machine?
One must imagine Mr octopus happy
Maybe it thought it was less conspicuous this way
Path of least resistence I guess.
i was waiting for a tentacle to come back up for the two dinner pieces it left behind:-)
Same
They have 9 brains! They are clever scary ocean creatures.
The little shrimpy fella was trying to catch a ride, but got pushed off last second.
I’m pretty sure it spat it out so it could fit through the hole
It's an age-old technique.
he said "nah not today"
its not that shrimple
he sure didn't wanna end up as dinner :D
Felt like octopus consciously taking them under its body
I’m pretty sure it spat it out so it could fit through the hole easier
Take me with yooooooouu
It deserved the win like Andy from The Shawshank Redemption
I like to think he’s left a note for the shrimp that also tried to hitch a ride.. under a rock that has no earthly business on a boat…
Unde that rock there is something I want you to have shrimp
Whats in the rock Octy?
And it is _Red_.
So the fisherman was just like... "Alright, boi. Earn your freedom."
Tbf I don’t think the fisherman intended to catch octopi (?) so he would have released him anyway
Octopodes my pal or octopuses. 🐙
thanks bro. Yeah in German it’s Oktopusse and I thought in English it was different for some reason

Octopodes nuts
Oh nice thanks for the explanation!
Yay octopus! Stay well away from the floaty things, big guy.
I wonder if The Deep knows what she can do?🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
We all know they both know eachother very well 😂
It seems like octopus are not in line with evolution. Like every other animal or fish makes sense. But what did octopus evolve from? Keep in mind I am not a biologist or even educated beyond high school.
Octopuses are molluscs. They are related to snails, oysters, and clams.
Yes, they mainly evolved from Nautilus like animals, that lost their shell. Since they are not Mammals or reptiles their intelligence is very different, with all limbs and nerves being almost like independent brains. Evolution is wild when you start looking beyond the regular Mammalian biology.
Okay so octopus evolved from that league of legends champ with the anchor, got it.
And aliens. Definitely related to aliens.
Interesting! Thanks. Neat stuff.
Octopus are about as far away on the evolutionary tree as possible from us, I'm pretty sure. Our last common ancestor is so far back they're basically aliens.
Today I learned octopi are liquid.
All but the mouth!
Sometimes cats are too
That was basically my reference LOL!
Ambrosius
A quiz question once enlightened me that the hole an octopus can squeeze through is only limited by the size of it's eyeballs. It's the only part of the body that can't be stretched/minimized.
I would love to look at my plumbing system and be like “yeah, I could fit through that.”
The natural instincts here are unreal!
Oh, there's much more than instinct going on with octopoda.
They're renowned for their comparative intelligence. This is reasoning, not instinct. Also why I refuse to eat octopus.
I very rarely eat octopus and never go out of my way to do so, but honestly I might avoid it entirely after watching this. They are so damn smart, impressive, and honestly kind of adorable in their own way.
Fabulous! Makes me wish I could do that at times.
If there's a Will there's a Way! Gooo Octo! 🐙
The shrimp: "Take me with you!"
Poor little guy shouldn't have been on that boat in the first place. Humans are the real monsters 😥
Love this vid.
Well deserved new life.
Very smart creatures 🐙
Asian porn be like
Great job with the camera, I was expecting some crazy movements like panning backwards calling other people to check it out.
You know that terminator movie where the T-1000 is liquid? Um, yeah, that.
Should be illegal to fish or kill them.
Help that poor fucker.
Yeah I was afraid they would cut themself with the metal
Me too
Olcotraz
These are amazing creatures. Fishing is all well and good but I think Octopuses need left in peace.
Cool. But I've seen slimy politicians go through smaller holes.
There's a pedo joke there, but I'd rather focus on the awesome lil dude who just exited stage right. Phenomenal lil creatures.
wow, not necessarily
Octopus:“…You will never know who will be UEFA champion!“
Octopus just casually being the most hard-core animal on the planet all of the time
While, ironically, being one of the most soft-core creatures since no bones.
No fn way
🤣🤣 so cool
Maxing animal. Brilliant escape.
And we have bones, why?
Ikr I felt jealous watching this too like imagine being able to do that. Life is so crazy. It reminds me of our tongues, how we can make them thin and flat or thick and pointy depending how we move them
"Evolution, baby."
Cause of all the silly running and jumping we like to do
Terrestrial locomotion. There’s a reason octopi haven’t dominated humanity. But I’m not saying they aren’t on their way. *ocotopusinatrenchcoat.jpg
Davy Jones after Pirates of the Caribbean franchise shut down.
😳 these creatures are not of this world 😨
They are amazing. There's brilliant footage of them changing their skin colour and texture in a split second, to look like something entirely different.
This hole is too big for them. All they need is a hole big enough for their beak to go through. Rest all they manage. These guys are legit aliens and my favorite sea animals.
An octopus is actually capable of squeezing through a hole the size of one of its eyes.
Octopuses are our true lords.
Somebody could have told him he could just easily go over.
*SHHLOOOP*
Probably my favorite animal.
Those things are aliens
Looks more like "octopus was freed via small hole in boat" considering how this was filmed lol
Anybody else hear a slurping noise with a pop at the end?
I'm sorry, I will never be able to look at an octopus again without thinking about the boys.
“Hehe… I’m just gonna go over here and skidaddle.”
Yeah, at this point we can just call them liquid....
Is this an episode of The Boys?
Ima head out
The deep…
Just keep the deep away from it
Having watched The Boyz, I struggle to watch any octopus related clips now!
Captain Hector Barbossa's face is escaping.
I wonder if that feels weird to him.
He forgot his shrimps :(
This makes the new season of The Boys even more disturbing.
Who saw these things in the past and said "yeah we can probably eat that!"
It's amazing how you can contort if you don't have any bones or have some good quaaludes.
yep they are Aliens.
“And I’m taking this shrimp with me”
Notice he left a couple of snacks behind
That little prawn at the end trying to cling in an attempt to be taken with.
Did it just shit out a shrimp?
Looks like a nice fellow I think Ile call him bob
Him “I’ll make it fit” 🤨
and the shrimp didn't jump?
how does he know he has to escape
'Be water'

The octopus: "See ya, suckers"
Octopus, has exited the building
But can he dance the captain’s jig?
Uh why did it's head change?
The lucky octopus who was allowed to escape just to shoot the video 📸📷😅
i'm more amazed to the fact that they let it go
Poor little shrimp thingy just crying out “no… take me with you!” Octopus are smart! Ugly af but smart as hell
Poor thing looks like its legs are a little fucked up. Not a single comment mentions it. :(
You can almost hear the "Fuck youuuuuuuu..." as she swims away.
Very impressive Houdini trick
What no bones does to a mf
"Ow fuck, do you even deburr?"
Check this article out. These things are fascinating and really intelligent! https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/2017/mar/28/alien-intelligence-the-extraordinary-minds-of-octopuses-and-other-cephalopods
only peasants need bones
Dave trying to escape the Penguins (of Madagascar)?
Octopus is one of the coolest creatures in existence.
Lol, it used it's little shrimpy buddy as a distraction while it make it's gettaway.
Why was that octopus in that boat to begin with? If we're hint to praise his smart they are, this video is kinda cruel imo.
And he took the shrimp with him!
More aliens on Earth than you think. Well done for getting back to the water.
Oh, throw the prawn back too.
That video is older than the internet
These poor creatures are too smart and sentient to be treated like this.
86 the Callimari
That’s an Alien
If the eyes can go through, the rest will folllow. They're even able to test/measure using their eyes if they will fit or not, and choose between too small / large enough holes.
There goes our dinner
My aquarium says most can fit through a walnut size hole.
Those shrimp are like "nooo don't leave me big bro!"
Throw the shrimp back in for him to eat
This how I escaped my mother!
Desperation knows no bounds.
Bro at least give credit if you steal my post
Interesting that it chose to squeeze through that hole and spit it's meal rather than going over the railing
They are one of my favourite animals. It's hard because they're damn cool, but they also freak me the fuck out. I think it's a mix of how they move, and the amount of arms reminds me of spiders which i'm terrified of. Same with crabs.
Now his brain is a slushy!

You are free now, baby Cthulhu.
An octopus has no bones in its body. It fit through the smallest crack
If there's one animal I don't like it's octopuses
