Your son is a lucky shit. I wish I had somebody to teach me useful skills like that in my youth. Looks beautiful. Idk shit about construction, but these weeiners seem to think its a solid job, so good on you.
Honestly most of my crazy good tile guys can be damn good at most trades when needed or wanted. It takes dedication and care to be perfect in tile and it really is the core need for all trades. Obviously it's a lot more then just that but so much stems from there. I only do flooring and find this to be the case.
There’s good money in tile work, I agree care and dedication are a must in the trades. I have never failed a electrical, plumbing or building inspection and I’ve been at it almost 20 years.
There’s great money in tile work and it isn’t as seasonal as deck and fence building. Why I’m wanting to add that to my skillset. I have basic tile knowledge but there’s way more to it than slapping tile on a floor. Plus chances of falling off a ladder or shooting yourself with a nail gun nonexistent. I’m almost 60 and deck building and fencing is becoming more dangerous for me. Especially with the extreme heat.
I was gonna say I love most aspects of tiling, making thinset, grout, getting good at cutting it, laying but holy shit I’m 6’5” and it is super hard on the low back for me.
Thank you.. that’s probably why so many customers have me back to do other jobs.. I’ve worked on several house for this customer spanning back almost 20 years.
I know now that it's the pattern on the step material, but when I first looked at it I thought "why the fuck did he bevel the stairs like that!? Someone's gonna die!" LOL.. Looks nice, well done!
Just joined this too after a couple run ins on the popular page. I don’t even own a house. I just graduated and I’m living rent free at my moms. But I love this stuff
I feel like with some galvankzed steel, eco friendly wood veneers and borrowing some screws from your aunt, you could have made additional living space instead!
I recently remodeled their basement also, it’s a multi level house with 3 generations living in it and there’s an abundance of space for sure they bnb out their unused rooms as is.

That’s the closest to under I found lol
Is that normal? I was slowly starting to make plans for DIY myself, but that material cost is 3x my expectation. I imagine the stairs were a big part of that. Mine would only be 2 feet high
NGL fam, I have a SUPER negative connotation with contractors doing work. Soooooooo many bad stories with the pics showing how buyers have been left holding the bag. But you are an artisan! Your work is absolutely gorgeous, and functional. Stand well in your accomplishment! An absolutely BEAUTIFUL functional, structurally sound deck, oh, and a nice kitchen! May all contractors be like you 🙌
I’m blown away by how smoothly every picture adds a layer to the description that you framed in your post title.
A story I want to hear told with more words though.
i’m assuming the sonotubes are 2’ out of the ground because you wanted to save money on your posts?
otherwise that’s a pretty odd detail…it’s already been mentioned but i sure hope there’s a rebar cage in those piers.
the deck looks good but that’s a big hang up for me…maybe being a few inches above grade just to keep the posts out of standing water but that’s about it.
That floor to ceiling window next to the door is throwing me off. I would have asked you to swap it for another door, or something, and wrapped the porch around. 😂🤷♀️
Mmmm! Goddamn, u/PositiveAssistant887! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some flat-pack do it yourself home depot deck right, but you spring this serious GOURMET shit on us!
So I'm not sure which code cycle you're working with, but if the tubes were 4' in a cold climate like upstate NY, your frost line is probably 4'. This means that the tubes should be 4' deep to prevent twisting and upheaval over time. If we combine this with your extremely low ledger board attachment you may have an issue in the future. Depending on the code cycle you might also be missing a graspable handrail.
The finish work looks great.
Too bad you are nowhere near FL. I would have asked you whether you’d build an extended garage, big enough to be a LAB. Like I picture something to have at least 3 cars or trucks parked in it, can be seen from the background while I’m on zoom meetings, extra lounge room with a bed and tv, probably kitchen too. Epoxy flooring. I just really dream of having my own LAB lol. Great job btw, looks amazing
What are you doing next weekend? I have just a couple of things on my list for you. You know, new kitchen, couple bathrooms and of course replace my deck. Shouldn't take long. Beautiful work, sir!
Looks great. They should stain bearing posts in gray color to blend a bit. I would have added another fixed full glass pane panel next to the door if feasible to open it up.
Bros a natural. Idk at all but loons awesome
I enjoy construction, thank you
You didn't even leave the footing form in place to rot and slowly fall off? You call yourself a contractor?
Lmao.. I needed a laugh
Rebar in those?
I’d ask the same question. I might have to move there just so that I can hire the OP to build a deck for me, too. : D
Yep, and they go down 4’ also
What did you use to dig those 4’ pilings ? And what did you charge in labor to build that deck ? And how many people in your crew ?
A gas powered post hole digger, 18K.. just me and my son.
Beautiful job…..
Thank you
Your son is a lucky shit. I wish I had somebody to teach me useful skills like that in my youth. Looks beautiful. Idk shit about construction, but these weeiners seem to think its a solid job, so good on you.
My dad taught me about meth lol. Dont do drywall folks. Never try drywall, even once.
How long did it take?
The deck took a few weeks kitchen took a bit longer
Can I ask what area you're in? 18k is high for a deck like that in my area. But your work looks high quality for sure!
Thank you… NY near Cornell University.. 18k was labor.. materials were just under 15k
Honestly most of my crazy good tile guys can be damn good at most trades when needed or wanted. It takes dedication and care to be perfect in tile and it really is the core need for all trades. Tiles hard on the knees, get a good set of kneepads if your planning on tiling.
Knees and back… and hands
And mind, and... everything lol
I usually just stack up cardboard under my knees and move it around. I can’t stand wearing knee pads.
I was gonna say I love most aspects of tiling, making thinset, grout, getting good at cutting it, laying but holy shit I’m 6’5” and it is super hard on the low back for me.
Where are you located?
NY near Cornell University
It's pronounced Colonel and it's the highest rank in the military.
It’s pronounced Cornell, it’s the highest rank in the Ivy League!
It’s pronounced kernel and it’s the highest rank in grains and vegetables.
If you like building decks, I got a job for you here in Nebraska.....
You're the kind of contractor homeowners dream of hiring, seriously.
Thank you.. that’s probably why so many customers have me back to do other jobs.. I’ve worked on several house for this customer spanning back almost 20 years.
Ready for the hot tub!
I know now that it's the pattern on the step material, but when I first looked at it I thought "why the fuck did he bevel the stairs like that!? Someone's gonna die!" LOL.. Looks nice, well done!
LOL.. Thank you
Stairs look amazing!!
It’s an optical illusion. 😂
It’s the pleats.
I’m not an expert (just a deck enthusiast since this sub was constantly being recommended to me a few months ago) but this looks great
Just joined this too after a couple run ins on the popular page. I don’t even own a house. I just graduated and I’m living rent free at my moms. But I love this stuff
Bruh, get out there and lay some deck
Thank you
I feel like with some galvankzed steel, eco friendly wood veneers and borrowing some screws from your aunt, you could have made additional living space instead!
I recently remodeled their basement also, it’s a multi level house with 3 generations living in it and there’s an abundance of space for sure they bnb out their unused rooms as is.
FYI dudes comment is a TikTok meme, not genuine advice
Is this trex decking boards?
Yes it is
I want you to know that I understood and appreciate your reference and it made me laugh
Good nuance
Don't forget the LED light strip
[удалено]
Nicely done. Made with care and love for the craft
Thank you, I don’t cut corners lol
Show us a pic of the underside so we can destroy your soul.
I’ll check and see if I have one
Lol I read that as ‘check and see if I have a soul’
🤣
I don’t have any showing underneath that I could find
Then we have no choice but assume you fucked it all up.
https://preview.redd.it/7dvxcd3gr23d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55d327f20be181fbbb1ad42c2716ee4de5495955 That’s the closest to under I found lol
I'll bet you are quietly pissed that the posts didn't hit the footings dead center. Heavy is the crown of the professional. Nice job👍
I was lol.. thank you
Brace the frame where you want it, hang the posts down, pour the concrete around the connectors. Perfect every time
YW
Narrator: he did not fuck it up
We trust it is up to reddit code :P
Then how did you build this deck, or anything for that matter?
My helper cuts the corners of course lol
Where did you gain your familiarity with the decking and railing products?
I was an apprentice to a good contractor. I thank him often for the skills he taught me.
You’re hired
You’re on the schedule
How long is the span?
20’x16’ I believe, it’s been a few years.
Smart, posting after statute of limitations is the way to go
Look at you, all decked out.
Love the stairs. How do you do that?
Lots of measuring, some under the breathe choice words and coffee mostly.
Not judging just curious, why make the footers raised so high?
Customer requested them tall, she wanted to bring the back yard up 8-10” and put in a stone patio underneath.
Dats mighty purdy
Thank you
How much does something like this cost?
I think materials for the deck were just under 15k
Is that normal? I was slowly starting to make plans for DIY myself, but that material cost is 3x my expectation. I imagine the stairs were a big part of that. Mine would only be 2 feet high
Composite is expensive so is pressure treated.. so is quality labor.. it’s normal around here lol
Ah okay. I'm completely clueless about these expenses. It sounds like some labor was included in that? It's a very nice looking deck
Thank you.. no labor was an additional 18k I believe
So like $33k+ all in? Woah.
Yes that’s what the decks cost was labor and materials
This guy decks

Your work is absolutely gorgeous, and functional. Stand well in your accomplishment! An absolutely BEAUTIFUL functional, structurally sound deck, oh, and a nice kitchen! I’d say you nailed it, but it looks like hidden fasteners. Lol
I think it’s beauty. I love those clients that will trust you and keep adding interesting projects.
Thank you.. I worked for her parents before her so she knows I stand behind my work.
Those stairs tho 🤌🏼
So, the handrail posts. Are they mounted with brackets? Or the aluminum filler posts? Additional blocking underneath?
The posts are the steel filler posts, and I use an extra joist and lag them down with 8” lag bolts.
I think you know your 💩 sir. Good work
Looks great! Except that for some reason that overhead crane shot of the stairs makes me dizzy.
Awesome
I just wanna say you have discovered the grayest gray i think anyone has ever seen
Nice
Thank you
I am building stairs with composite and trying to figure out how to do treads like you did. Do you have a picture of the blocking between stringers?
Beautiful work!
Excellent work on both the kitchen and the deck. My only question would be why the concrete forms aren’t just a little above grade.
Looks great, now go knock on that neighbors door, he could use some siding
How’s the client like it? I’d be very happy. Make sure to take pics for your portfolio.
Everything is right in this example. I do NOT appreciate you being in this sub. I come here for absolute awful builds. Kudos.
Outstanding
Don't give up your day job, I mean because you're real good at it. I'm assuming you built a deck during the day while you were at work.
Lol you are correct, and I don’t plan on giving it up any time soon.. thank you
Can it support a hot tub tho?
I’d put my reputation on the line it would
That… looks slick af. Well done!
Crushed it, both inside and outside!!!
Man was thinking the deck looked awesome, til I got to the last picture, of the finished kitchen and then…🧑🍳💋
Looks nice to me! Footings look good from the pics. Good job! P.s. Nice tile too!
Nice flex bro.
deck is nicer than the house...
To be honest sometimes the work I do at a house makes it the best part of the house.
I think you can build a deck.
Looks great...I'm just learning here but do the stairs need to land on a concrete pad?
Can fit so many hot tubs on this baby.
it looos great
Is the customer happy? That’s all that matters. But looks good to me
I’m blown away by how smoothly every picture adds a layer to the description that you framed in your post title. A story I want to hear told with more words though.

Amazing job! Location? I need a new deck soon
This guy builds
Wow. You are incredibly talented and your hard work and effort is clear in the product. You should be proud of who you are and the work you do
I think you do very nice work!
What wood/material is that on the deck ?
What product is the railing?
Probably a good 50k between the two jobs
That looks amazing
You're coming to my house next, right?
That floor to ceiling window next to the door is throwing me off. I would have asked you to swap it for another door, or something, and wrapped the porch around. 😂🤷♀️
Man! It just keeps getting better every second! You’re awesome!
How do I hire you lol
Such a good idea. It’s gorgeus
Beautiful work.
I think you should’ve put one landing on the stairs midway of the deck. But very very nice craftsmanship for sure.
Beautiful work!
I think that looks great and strong. Beautiful job
Anyone know what kind of siding that is ? I’ve never seen that before.
Fantastic work.
Jesus christ that's aesthetic.
*claps and applauds in structural engineering*
The bevel cuts for the stairs is a bit of an odd choice, but the deck looks great.
When i see 45’s done that well i know theres pride there.
So I did the opposite. While a contractor did my deck, I asked if he could do my kitchen. Kitchen was decent - deck turned out not so well.
Pretty cool man.
Mmmm! Goddamn, u/PositiveAssistant887! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some flat-pack do it yourself home depot deck right, but you spring this serious GOURMET shit on us!

That’s the prettiest deck I’ve ever seen what the fuck
Damn - you picture framed the stairs even 🥰
Very nice 👍
That's a mighty nice looking deck, great work.
Impressive!
holy fuck that finished kitchen is incredible, decks real nice too

I’da wanted it to wrap around over that back door.
Wow, can you come do my kitchen next? Amazing job
OMG I love you..marry me!!
What are you doing next weekend? I have just a couple of things on my list for you. You know, new kitchen, couple bathrooms and of course replace my deck. Shouldn't take long. Beautiful work, sir!
A concrete landing for the stairs is all I would add.
Mannnnn. This deck decks. Nice job! Those stairs look awesome. All it’s missing is a hot tub. /s
This guy decks
Those stairs look gorgeous!
Damn dude. That looks 👌. Are you close to NYC? Lol
This is beautiful. Where in the world is this? How much did it cost?
Come rebuild my deck! I'm in RDU.
pretty what did you use for material, I love the way that looks
Fantastic job! Looks great.
An actual ledger bolted to the structure and concrete footers? I have no idea how this got into this sub...
really nice, great job
Broooooooo
Steps look great, that's the only way to do them with that material that doesn't end up looking like shit over time. Nice work
No blue tape anywhere to be seen. I like it a lot (in Lloyd Christmas voice)
Nice job
Looks like you do good work and have pride in what you create. Job well done.
Not bad. I would have made the deck longer than the deck. So can you come to San Diego and work on my patio? 😁
I think you know what your'e doing.
Can he build them a deck... it says. Jesus, man you're a Bob fucking Vila. I guess you can!
You’re hired!
I would be very happy with your work. Unless I’m missing something theirs not a view.
the piers are ugly as shit for professional work. get some stone work or masonry. the rest looks good
I saw the photos and instantly smiled. Great work!
Looks better than anything I can do. Well done.
Looks great. They should stain bearing posts in gray color to blend a bit. I would have added another fixed full glass pane panel next to the door if feasible to open it up.
That deck is fucking mint
Carpenter bee approved
Hot tub ready
Both the kitchen and that deck are sexy. Well done to both jobs!
It looks great
