Then you don't really get to have a say.
The way to change things is to participate.
The ultimate way to change things is to fix at the very least, minimum wage and healthcare.
When you can end up spending $2m to have a baby, things are very messed up.
Why? I've still voted.
The ultimate way is to get Democrats out of power in the big cities. Their methods simply aren't working. You don't think LA or Chicago or New York has a complete monopoly on political power? They are shit hole cities because of Dem policies.
Tell me you haven't been to any of these cities without telling me you haven't been to any of these cities.
Next you'll tell me that BLM protests destroyed Portland and Seattle in 2020.
In what way would having Republicans run major cities change anything except for the worse? They're major cities because people want to live there due to Democratic policies, and they're shitholes because people want to live there and can't afford them. You think Republicans will make things better for poor people? They'll strip crucial social services like they always do and make things worse, and if you don't know that already you must've been dumb enough to vote for Bush in '04. Oh wait...
This logic checks out until you realize how many Californian left California because of the politics and have processed to vote to make their new states like the one they left...
Laws promoting personal liberty that also promote personal responsibility. Social safety nets are a kind idea in concept, but it breeds what you see here where the government is responsible for the consequences of a personâs failures. If you believe in people as I do, empower them to strive for success by letting them own their own success or failure.
I would have liked something beyond "just empower people!". But that's literally all you have. You don't actually want to address homelessness, you just don't want to be confronted by it in your day to day life.Â
Which, ironically, is how you end up with all the homeless forced into "sanctuary districts".
In broad strokes, get rid of social safety nets for those who choose their own actions. No safe injection sites, no handouts for those not even attempting to get a job, reopen asylums for those with actual mental health problems, jail those without who have simply chosen a life of crime. Remove local minimum wage laws and allow two consenting parties to negotiate wages, decrease regulations so that someone starting a business who is poor doesnât have to jump through expensive hoops to get started. Severely increase penalties for theft while increasing the defense capacities for business owners to defend themselves and their property. Abolish rent control and regulations that make it all but impossible to build new housing.
Democrats have run big cities into shithole status for 20. 30, 40, or in some cases well over 100 years and itâs clearly not working.
So basically your way to solve homelessness and poverty is to let people suffer and eventually die (probably children included unless you'd actually leave those social safety nets alone)?
Start a riot and make sure there's a video of it on the internet.
One thing DS9 got wrong was the idea that the government could simply cut off the internet to a building and there'd be no way anyone could get a message out. If it actually happened today, the whole thing would be on a million social media feeds within minutes!
Never thought about that. I think youâre right. Someone just plugged in the clock and walked away saying itâs ITâs job to set the settings. IT says itâs one button and donât have the funding to send someone out to press said button. Employees there just think why bother just open your phone app, or sayâ itâs not in my contactâ (had co worker use that line to get out of everything hint it was in the contract) all this infighting is happening when there are more pressing issues going right in front of everyone
What I find odd is they've got the temperature in Celsius, but they're still using the ridiculous roller-coaster of month-day-year. At least use something sensible, like ISO 8601...
I think this Thursday might see some shit go down. Lot of people heading out into the hot sun to drink beer, half of them already angry and worried and the other half boastful and gloating.
This sounds like a really cool idea.
I live in a rural area and have no idea how to organize a protest. But I would love to see it happen, even if I couldn't attend.

Granted, the "era of (y)our last so-called World War" has been retconned by First Contact, at least, which is set to take place later this century, as you said.
It's possible we could be looking at several different timelines, rather than just two, though, so both could be possible. đ
We literally don't even give unhoused people Sanctuary Districts. A year ago, I was living out of a run-down RV that barely moved, and the biggest kick in the teeth was paying $600 a month just for a legal place to park it. The idea that I wasn't allowed to exist, even in only two parking spaces worth of space, was disheartening. It made it almost impossible to save to escape the situation as well. I remember often thinking of "Past Tense" and wishing for Sanctuary Districts, as awful as they were.
Our world's top augment got killed by James Bond. This is why secret agent movies are so popular here. But it delayed the development of space travel by a lot. The last surviving augment, codename Elon, was the weakest of the batch but still carries all the worst psychological traits.
The Chicago typeface, that takes me back. It used to be the default UI font in Mac OS from the 80's through much of the 90's, so it was readily available to a lot of graphical designers.
I always dreamed of living in the Trek universe. It broke my heart as a kid realizing needing glasses effectively banned me from ever being an astronaut.
I DID NOT EXPECT TO BE ON THE LORE ACCURATE TIMELINE. WWIII IS IN LIKE 2 YEARS.
I swear, if The Democrats drop Biden and find an African American candidate named Gabriel Bell, every Trekkie worth their comm badge will have no choice but voting for him, after they find new underwear of course. It would be quite the shock if it came to pass.
Through a violent act of rebellion. Something every liberal democrat I know needs to understand. Capitalism isnât going to change by voting. We need to take action and make this economic system work for the worker.
Liberal democrats believe in democracy. Which means they believe workers should hold some sway. And infact the term "liberal" refers to the RIGHT of the centre political spectrum.
Liberalism is a (lightly) right wing political-economic school. They believe in free market economies, and small government with low market regulation.
It's the non democratic left (communism and anarchism) that believe the status quo must be overturned by revolution. The communist believe in state planned economies that empower the workers.
The problem with this is that it's already been tried in practice, in several countries, Russia, Vietnam, north Korea, china. And in all instances it has lead to an authoritarian regime by "those who write the plans"
Communism isn't even supposed to be a planned economy. It's a stateless system.
What's happening is authoritarians are taking over communist movements and using them as window dressing to get popular approval. Then people who don't understand communism eat it up. The CCCP had to write its own version on top of Marxism to justify being authoritarian because of how fundamentally incompatible with Marxism it actually is.
Communism not planned? have you read Marx book? Like at all?
And yes communism doesn't work because authoritarianism takes over. I think it is unavoidable for communism as i already stated a few times.
Gotta flip through 300 channels to find the news or know someone with access to a personal computer WITH internet at their super important job to get access to the details, though.
I realised this about a week ago. My girlfriend asked me why I was suddenly so excited. I said, "I'm just looking forward to the Bell riots." We need him now more than ever đ«
Right? Like, yeah, that seems pretty on-track at the moment. Literally just got the go-ahead to criminalize existing while homeless, too.
Somebody has to change the regime of the major cities where homeless encampments abound, I agree.
Hey guys, found the right-winger!
Nope, just an observer of humanity. I havenât voted R since 2004
Then you don't really get to have a say. The way to change things is to participate. The ultimate way to change things is to fix at the very least, minimum wage and healthcare. When you can end up spending $2m to have a baby, things are very messed up.

I've been to all that I listed multiple times. My sister lives in New York. It's a shithole.
In what way would having Republicans run major cities change anything except for the worse? Yep, I was a dumb kid in 04 and didn't know better. I wouldn't have Republicans fix it either. They're not small government anymore.
You haven't voted since 2004. Feel free to have a say on politics in 2004.
I have voted. Just not for one of your two loser parties that you think is better than the other for whatever reason.
Okay, I'll bite. What's your proposed solution to homelessness?
Laws promoting personal liberty that also promote personal responsibility. If you believe in people as I do, empower them to strive for success by letting them own their own success or failure.
Oh, so you don't have any ideas. Thanks!
Seriously? You want me to lay out individual law for each individual city Iâd get rid of or establish? Way to engage
I would have liked something beyond "just empower people!". But that's literally all you have. You don't actually want to address homelessness, you just don't want to be confronted by it in your day to day life. Which, ironically, is how you end up with all the homeless forced into "sanctuary districts".

Hey what's your favorite rule of acquisition while you're at it?
Rule #127: F--k you, I got mine.
You get what you subsidize. Youâve subsidized shithole city behavior. It will continue until otherwise incentivized
So basically your way to solve homelessness and poverty is to let people suffer and eventually die (probably children included unless you'd actually leave those social safety nets alone)?
charities exist and they do social safety nets better than governments.
I'll be in San Fransisco the week before that. If there's anything I need to do to help push things along, please let me know, my fellow Niners.
Who was Gabriel Bell, maybe you can tell us
We're all Gabriel Bell!
That's the spirit
I thought weâre all Alpharius.
Bro YOU are gabriel bell
Start a riot and make sure there's a video of it on the internet. One thing DS9 got wrong was the idea that the government could simply cut off the internet to a building and there'd be no way anyone could get a message out. If it actually happened today, the whole thing would be on a million social media feeds within minutes!
Also go (Forty) Niners
Can I get a date Dax before the riots?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
I can set up a meeting with the/a symbiont if you like.
Are we also converting to the metric system in 2 months?
Clock was imported. Made in china.
Or they pushed the wrong button, set it to Celsius and couldn't figure out how to get back to FahrenheitÂ
Or couldn't be bothered to try
I can't even be bothered to change my clocks twice a year for Daylight Savings time.
That fits.
PRESSING issues.......no pun intended..............
It makes me think how few people use both MM/DD/YY dates and degrees celsius. It might just be Canada and the Philippines.
Canada officially uses YYYY/DD/MM. (In practice it's a mix) As a Canadian I did notice the use of Celsius on that board.
We did the conversion in 1820. Get with the program already!
That was the most unrealistic part of that whole story line.
What I find odd is they've got the temperature in Celsius, but they're still using the ridiculous roller-coaster of month-day-year. At least use something sensible, like ISO 8601...
Remember that Star Trek is an optimistic, utopian show. They thought we'd be on the metric system by now.
Embrace change.
I wish.
Donât rush itâŠđ€Ł
The riot in the show was Sept 3, 2024.
Doesn't this Gabriel Bell look a lot like Captain Sisko? All hue-mons look alike.
make it so
![gif](giphy|bKnEnd65zqxfq)
Iâm still giving SCOTUS props to make sure we stick to canon in making it illegal to sleep on the streets.
Except we don't even get Sanctuary Districts.
They canât do everything. Theyâre not the Profits.
I don't know about that, Thomas and Alito seem to be profiting just fine from their billionaire buddies.
The prophesy about profits is true!
What day we organize some actual protest action for this date? Lord knows there's plenty to protest.
We're in a worse timeline than Star Trek. I suspect the Bell Riots will be delayed.
On the other hand, we do seem to have avoided at least most of the Eugenics wars...
Probably because genetic engineering isn't that advanced or widespread yet.
True. And I have to say, I **am** a little disappointed that we don't have any DY series ships yet.
At least we got the meme wars
Pretty sure those are end of this century, maybe next.

Honestly, I like it and wish I had it on my iPhone, mostly because of the very specific retro/nostalgia niche it fills.
The real question is whether or not we'll be using Celsius in America by then?
Some of us do from time to time in the science lab⊠does that count? đ

Apathy also leads to authoritarianism, just a bit slower. See: the Trump immunity ruling.
Authoritarianism is inherently anti-left because communism is classless and authoritarianism is an inherently classed society.
while that is true in the ideals of communism. in practice communism becomes a dictatorship by those who plan the economy.

Bell Riots are on my daughter's 13th birthday.
The last thing I need is a visit from Temporal Investigations.
And when itâs Daniels/Kovich who shows up you know youâve really fâd up.
Was that a joke? We hate those too.
Imagine being named Gabriel Bell right now

Thereâs a small but enthusiastic market for that kind of clock right now.
By 2024, America had come to their senses about the metric system, but still kept using M/D/YY for dates.
Weâre in the alt time line. Weâll be the oppressors of the galaxy soon.
Dude- does this mean I grow a goatee and start wearing menacing makeup? Iâm a woman and I canât grow a beard, but maybeâŠ

Don't forget, if he looks a little different from when he entered the sanctuary... No he doesn't. He always looked like that.
All hoomans look alike.
Lots of Gabriel Bells out there; which one will it be?
i like when star trek creates its own timeline of history. one of my peeves is when they use real world history. everytime a nasa shuttle popped up in an episode or movie it was almost 4th wall breaking. i realize im in the minority on this but this is a much better approach
59 degrees F in San Francisco on August 30th? We shall see...đ§ It'd be really cool if everything matched.
Cool? Scary perhaps...
The actual events scary...having that readout be correct all those years ago when the episode was written...that's just fantastic. Temperature is highly variable, especially in SF. Plus summers have just been sweltering everywhere across the southwest in recent summers. It unfortunately seems that the actual events might well play out as well on that day if things continue to progress the way they have been concerning the homeless population.
When do we get the Irish Unification?
The show obviously forgot to incorporate global warming because that would be a comfortable day
If you want to see Hollywood depict an eerily accurate future? Watch Soylent Green. Edit to add, the actor who plays Ben's father in DS9 plays Charleston Heston's boss in the movie.
Just watched it, was a little disappointed about the ending but it was awesome otherwise
Oh ya!
We gonna I am Spartacus this or what?
The sad thing is we are actually worse than the past of "Past Tense." We don't even give unhoused people the "dignity" of Sanctuary Districts. Instead, the Supreme Court has just made it legal for cities to arrest people for sleeping outside, even when there is no shelter space. It's disgusting.
I live in SF, I've been wanting to organize something for the occasion for years but I will but I will be out of town that weekend. Why did they have to do it on a holiday weekend!
well, this year you vote if the Monarchy of the USA will be red or blue. choose wisely.
The eeriness of this prediction...
The...what?
Eeriness?
How things are so heated right now and how ds9 almost predicted it
Eiryness?
Eeriness sorry spelling mistake
Updated
And so it begins!
It has already begun. We are just circling towards the finale
All Trek fans should riot let's do this
Is there sanctuary districts in San Francisco? I know itâs become illegal to sleep in public so Sisko and Bashir could still get arrested for it.
DS9 is giving me the best birthday gift this year the arrival of Dax Siskoand Bashir
GOOD
I was just curious and yes... 8/30 this year does in fact fall on a Friday. For a show made 20 years ago thats a pretty damn good tibdit to add.
Dates and days of the week are totally unpredictable. Amazing the props team was able to do so.
Unvomfortable hiw close we seem to be getting to that episode.
So why not post this in 58 days..?
Prep time.
