Dude’s going to be 35 next year at a position that can hit a wall at pretty much any moment. He’s racking up endorsement money, got two rings, and is a HOF lock; I really don’t see him continuing much longer and I think everyone would agree he’s on the downswing of his career

IMERMAIDMANonYT

Whoa now. He was a HOF lock, but that call against Toney pushed him right back out

shaclay346

Yeah, that play completely ruined his legacy

onqqq2

Yeah, that play completely ruined ~~his legacy~~ **GREATNESS**

WeimSean

poor guy. this time next year he's gonna be lucky just be scraping buy. And it's all Toney's fault.

Thruthebitterness

No remember it’s the refs fault how dare they call that because it was such a good play. In that situation there should be no such thing as a penalty for the queefs

KickinWing2325

What if mahomes whining about that call and its effect on Kelce is because he knows that he's retiring after this season?!

Joamjoamjoam

All because of just 1 inch (or 12 depending on who you ask)

lebastss

The call didn't but his reaction might have pushed him off the first ballot.

ATG_19

Wife up a billionaire and call it a day.

killerbuttonfly

And he’s charismatic enough to land a media job. I don’t think he’s passing Gronk to be the GOAT at TE so might as well walk away while he still has his health.

StillNotTheFatherB

Whoa whoa whoa. Tony Gonzalez would like a word about that statement.

killerbuttonfly

Fair. Gates and Sharpe are up there too. I just didn’t feel like listing all 4. Either way, Kelce’s not closing that gap in the twilight of his career.

gabriel1313

Gronk, Gonzalez, Kelce, Sharpe and Gates. May as well be tied for top 5 with how ridiculous each of them were. Sharpe may have been most athletic and Gronk having had Brady helps. Gonzalez with the most longevity and Kelce perhaps the best receiver. And Gates was the basketball player. Excellent group.

2rio2

It’s crazy how many great TEs the AFC West has had.

MalevolentFather

I think Gronk would have feasted with any QB. That being said, if we’re looking at overall peak and not accounting for longevity the GOAT TE is Gronk mostly because he is dominant in both facets, receiving and blocking.

gabriel1313

It’s easy to say he could have benefitted with any QB, but the fact remains he spent the entirety of his career playing alongside the best QB of all time. It’s impossible not to take that into consideration. True talent would be able to make up for a lack of surrounding talent and its arguable that Gonzalez could be the best because he put up consistent numbers in KC despite never having an elite QB throwing to him. However, all that being said, I still believe they’re all about tied considering the previously listed attributes and any means of trying to say one was better than the other could be seen as favoritism towards that particular player, for whatever reason, and could easily be disproven with facts pointing towards an opposite conclusion on behalf of any of the other players.

infercario4224

That’s exactly why I believe Gronk is the GOAT TE. He was legitimately a 6th lineman for NE most of his career. That’s why imo I always say Kittle is a better TE than Kelce. Kelce is a better receiving TE, but the difference in the pass game is marginal compared to the massive difference the two men bring in the run game.

Commercial-Donut-798

Totally agree. Now that you mentioned Kittle, that guy is so underrated! On almost all of those incredible highlight plays by Deebo or CMC he's there making the key block.

For_Perpetuity

So many played in the AFC West

BrandRage

Ozzie was great too.

BareezyObeezy

Tony G was a monster. Gates was a beast. Kelce is unquestionably top 3. But peak Gronk was a cheat code. He was the ridiculous custom player you'd make on Madden. Ideal size, outstanding blocker, too big for DBs to cover, too fast for LBs to cover, crazy difficult to tackle in the open field, and he would go up and catch contested passes as well as anyone. If he weren't so injury prone, he'd be alone at the top statistically, and those Pats teams may have won another ring or two.

kazmir_yeet

Unquestionably top 5, not unquestionably top 3. Tony Gonzalez and Gronk have to be 1 and 2, and then it’s a fistfight for # 3 between Shannon Sharpe, Antonio Gates, and Travis Kelce. Even Witten could be included in the convo tbh. Personally I’m taking Gates at 3.

I_Poop_Sometimes

Tony Gonzalez is the easy number 1, Gronk and Kelce are tight at number 2, but if Kelce gets a first team all pro + pro bowl this season then the only difference in their PFR HoF tracker rating is Gronks two extra super bowls.

TheBIFFALLO87

Sharpe and Gates would like a word. They're in the parking lot by your car. Good luck.

Dani_vic

Sharpe doesn’t even put him self in a top 4.

TheBIFFALLO87

The man is an enigma. The biggest shit talker to ever play the game, yet humble.

vbcbandr

Wait: Gronk is the GOAT?

KlorgBaneTD

Probably not, I'd have him as a close #3 behind Gates. The Kelce GOAT talk is 100% recency bias though. Great player, and definitely top 5, but the discussion people should be having isn't whether he's #1 or #2, but whether he's #4 or #5.

kazmir_yeet

Gronk is 2 for me. I love Gates but Gronk’s rings (not a massively important metric for the position but still matters) and his blocking ability put him at 2.

Shenanigans80h

I will say, longevity and availability don’t favor Gronk, but his prime when healthy, idk if there’s ever been a weapon like him. To have the speed, athleticism, route running and catching ability he had at his insane size was just ridiculous; all of this plus he was a legitimately great blocker, something a lot of other top 5 guys (like Sharpe and Kelce) are honestly only average at. That would be my argument for Gronk frankly.

GonnaBeAGoodYear

Gronk is by far the best blocker out of the GOAT TEs and imo that counts for a lot…maybe not the GOAT because of longevity but prime gronk is the best TE ever

foothillsco_b

Gronk played 11 years. That’s not a Terrell Davis career exactly.

GonnaBeAGoodYear

Yeah he’s probably the overall GOAT imo anyway…but Tony’s career stats are just insane

babooze_you_lose

GOAT? Maybe not, but that includes longevity…most insane prime though? Hell yea.

Donthurtmyceilings

Loved watching Gronk run into the endzone, dragging 2 defenders on his back.

Homers_Harp

Not while Mike Ditka exists.

kazmir_yeet

Lmao? This is such a old head thing to say. It’s Tony Gonzalez and it isn’t close. Ditka isn’t even top 5.

Homers_Harp

Show me tape of Tony Gonzales wrecking defensive linemen as a blocker. What's that? Tony didn't block? OK, well, keep in mind that Ditka not only blocked like a guard, he was putting up ridiculous receiving numbers before the passing game was opened up with rules changes. It's Ditka and the only player who comes close to him in terms of block and receiving is Gronk.

kazmir_yeet

That’s great. He’s top 10 for sure. No argument there. He absolutely is not the best of all time though, or even top 5.

Homers_Harp

If tight ends don't block and are a liability in the run game, that's a demerit. Also, you seem to ignore the different eras. Ditka was a dominant TE receiving in an era where TEs were largely an afterthought in the passing game, which, when combined with his elite blocking, made him a game changer, not just dangerous like Sharpe or Gonzalez.

JSHVice

GOAT has to be Tony G I think. But it's crazy that there's an argument for Kelce, Gronk, Gonzalez, Sharpe, and Gates. Been blessed to have watched 4 of 5 play during my football watching lifetime.

MrJonBrown

He’s 35? Damn I’m getting old

Shenanigans80h

Tbf he entered the league at 24 so was kind of an old rookie

ecupatsfan12

You’re just jealous of Tom Brady because he played until he’s 45 when you had to stop at 35- Skip Bayless

Gtownbadass

He's the same age as gronk. Wild.

imbored53

Gronk had some city miles on him.

[deleted]

He’s a guy that will easily get a broadcasting job or other shows if he wants when he is done.

haranaconda

I’d say he’s likely got 1-2 more years. Feel like he wants one more push for a Super Bowl and then will call it quits. HoF lock, lucrative endorsements, successful podcast, dating a billionaire. Dudes already set, but I imagine him Mahomes and Reid want one more ring while he’s still there.

BareezyObeezy

How do those factors indicate that he would retire? Would he not be less likely to get endorsement deals after he retires? Peyton Manning is a huge outlier in this regard. His team is winning, he's making bank, he's playing well, regardless of this article's L of a take...what incentive does he have to retire?

Shenanigans80h

Bro what? What incentive does he have to retire? Idk maybe the rigors of playing a full contact sport at a position that takes constant hits. Wear and tear on a deteriorating body. 6 to 7 months of rigorous training day in and day out that has been constant for him something close to 15+ years. Yeah he isn’t washed yet, but plenty guys see the end of tunnel before they truly are. The comment about endorsement money is moreso an observation that he’s had a much larger presence in the public (even outside the Swift stuff) through endorsements, the podcast he does and public appearances. Racking up that money and outside clout can be a precursor to a guy’s post-playing career a lot of the time.

ConsiderTheBulldog

The incessant Taylor Swift coverage will be worth it if after this season she convinces him that there’s more to life than football

SuperAFoods

while she works around the clock to continue her career/brand. doubt it

crystalmerchant

can't play football your whole life they're different careers lol but i agree with the sentiment

johnnynutman

Giselle couldn’t do it so I wouldn’t count on it

wolfenbarg

QBs don't age out as fast as TEs.

MalevolentFather

Most players don’t have the same determination to play for 2 decades as Brady.

YOwololoO

Travis Kelce doesn’t seem to be quite as much of a psychopath as Tom Brady though

Ecstatic_Increase_50

Personally I think Week 1 injury has hurt his whole season and he hasn’t been 100% since

JJJaxMax

This….. and he has 900 yards and 5 yds with four games left. He’s going to end up at least matching his production from two years ago….minus a few touchdowns unless he just goes crazy

liesforliars

My tinfoil hat theory after the chiefs meltdown earlier was that Petty Mahomes was upset about the play being over turned (and getting an L) because he knows it’s Kelce’s last year. They want to go out with a bang, but it ain’t happening. We’ll see.

2rio2

I mean that would make his outburst make some sort of sense at least.

TDenverFan

Tweets like this are kinda funny to me. Kelce said himself (in an interview with the Wall Street Journal) that he's physically beat up and thinks about retiring constantly. Like we don't need some random twitter user to cite an anonymous GM, Kelce said these things in an interview with the largest newspaper in the US.

barnchico

Taylor Swift is a succubus confirmed.

Political_Piper

I ended up not killing the Succubuses in Witcher 3 because they seemed sincere in their remorse but then I couldn't make the Succubus concoction because of it.

tomfoolist

A 34 year year old who's played his skill position at an elite level for a decade is maybe declining. More at 11. I'd love for him to retire, but even if he is declining the guy is about to have his 8th straight 1000 yard season. I'm just gonna assume this didn't come from our GM.

RamDEF7

He also said on his podcast he's had like 10 surgeries.

Vegetable_Rent_7699

Thank you for saying this. I’d love to not play him anymore but he is still elite and the defending SB Champs best offensive weapon. Total shit take

JSHVice

Agree that this is just media spin. Dude absolutely still has it, but it might be worth his long-term health to back out before the end-end.

MeLlamo_Mayor927

He has slightly declined physically this season, sure, but I believe that much of his decline is related to his life off-the-field. He doesn't have much left to play for: he's a consensus top 3 tight end ever and a 2 time super bowl champ. In addition to those things, he's in a high profile relationship with the biggest superstar in the world who might very well be looking to finally settle down. I'm no Swiftie, but if she convinces the man who has terrorized our defense for years to retire, I will be super damn grateful.

Tazitos

Didn't he get hurt earlier in the season? Probably the biggest factor.

Spiritual-Chameleon

That for sure. And it doesn't help that they only have one other receiving option, and he's only come on recently (Rice)..

my_nameborat

I’ll become a swiftie if she convinces kelce to retire before he wins another SB

Awesome_hospital

Lmao true that

Jontacular

80+ catches, almost 900 yards and 5 TD's in 12 games. We'll see how he does the remainder of the year, but it doesn't really look like he's anywhere close to being done. I don't think he'll be like Tony Gonzalez longevity, but he probably has a couple more seasons of good production.

_redacteduser

Maybe TSwift and Brittany and convince both Kelce and Patty to retire together

aquintana

Consensus top 3 is a huge stretch: Gronk,Tony G, Shannon Sharpe, Antonio Gates, Kellen Winslow, Ditka, Jason Witten…

deadlythegrimgecko

Lol I feel like this is kinda gonna be a gronk and Brady type deal where Kelce isn’t gonna want to retire until machines goes or he just physically cant

philbert247

Gronk is less than 6 months older than Kelce.

deadlythegrimgecko

Hence the physically can’t but I feel like if Tom came out of retirement and called on gronk there’d be a 50/50 of gronk still coming back

pofwiwice

I would honestly love them to do that

deadlythegrimgecko

I mean maybe if they went to the nfc

shot-by-ford

God damn that’s crazy Almost as old as Bo Nix

Vulgar_Mastermind1

Kelce is gonna be like 45 by the time Mahomes retires, bro been in the league for a minute

pofwiwice

Insane when you consider that he and Gronk are the same age

Shenanigans80h

That’s very unlikely. Kelce is older than Mahomes at a position that ages quicker. The Gronk situation was unique because Gronk was younger and no one could’ve expected Brady’s longevity

foothillsco_b

I live in Colorado and we rarely get NE games. How good was Aaron Hernandez?

deadlythegrimgecko

I live in Wisconsin I didn’t get any NE games really either but I also wasn’t really watching football when Aaron was playing but from what I read he was very very good him and Gronk together for a long time would’ve been killer from what I hear (no pun intended)

jrebar

That's why he was begging Chris Jones not to hold out. He's cooked. I don't want to hear that goat te b.s. from the media though.

beatsbydeadhorse

Not even the greatest tight end in the history of the Chiefs.

aquintana

Some bozo above was calling Kelce a “consensus top 3 ever TE.” I almost spit out my chocolate milk

RUIN_NATION_

If patty loses him lol he will be just a qb running around not completing many big plays anymore

BobMossNanoTanks

It'll be amazing to see the fall from grace, though.

ClasseBa

Both brothers will probably retire at the end of the season. Especially if none of them make it to the superbowl.

Not_Rob_Walton

MLFootball is the same Twitter account that posted the Bears' Alan Williams home was raided by the FBI, and Peanut Tillman was the FBI officer that informed the Bears that Williams was a pedophile. This seems credible, but let's not give MLFootball any legitimacy. It makes things up for clicks.

DJ_Slex

I actually have been thinking this since this past off season. The main indicator for me was the explosion in Kelce related brand deals, commercials etc. I’m also of the school of thought that the Taylor/Travis thing is in fact a PR deal—meant to boost Travis’ profile away from football. I have a sneaking suspicion Jason & Travis are soon to retire. Jason’s older & for Travis TE is a notoriously rough position to play on the body. Combine that with what looks like a clear attempt to setup income streams for post-NFL life…I’d say they’re both nearing retirement. If they both retire this off season, I’ll take my flowers

Throwawayidiot1210

You know Jason made an entire documentary about considering retiring so it’s not like you’re a sleuth for having this take lol

GoForPapaPalpy

Yeah they’ve both outwardly talked about it openly on their podcast. Saying two mid-late thirties NFL players are “near” retirement isn’t exactly a hot take.

Throwawayidiot1210

I don’t think Travis will retire he still wants to get paid bad. That’s why he’s doing so many endorsements and commercials, he knows he’s been getting hosed by the chiefs on his contracts

For_Perpetuity

Peter King says s his agent refers to the NFL as his “side” gig. He makes plenty from endorsements.

Narcan9

Maybe he will shake It off

LimpDisc

He recently talked about his injuries and surgeries on their podcast. Basically saying they have taken their toll on his body. That he feels the multiple surgeries every day now.

captainduck2

Didn't Jason Kelce come back for one more year? Maybe he knows Travis had one more in him too and wanted to try to get another SB against each other and then retire together? Idk. Travis does look noticeably less effective but he's still great. Unless he gets hurt again, he will easily clear another 100 catch, 1000 yard season. I mean if that's a down year, you're pretty elite.

Jstcuzican

What I want to know is how much Andy Reid and Mahomes got fined by NFL?

DoubleOrangutans

Hate to say it but I do think it's important to remember that a lot of the hype around "good team in decline" media coverage tends to be overblown. Not saying the Chiefs are looking their best, but I don't think they're in danger of completely falling apart any time soon. What Kelce *really* needs is his ego checked. Dude had lots of fun and was all smiles when we were losing to the Chiefs, but now that KC has some competition again, he's nowhere to be found off-field.

QuidProJoe2020

If they lose Kelce this off-season, they better bring in multiple weapons. That offense looks anemic with Kelce, without him its gonna be looking like a Nat Hackett offense lol

Beneficial-Shake-852

Do they have the salary cap for that if they are paying Patrick the biggest contract in the NFL? Next year his salary increases but in 2025 it really increases. I think their window of opportunity is 2023/2024 and then they will struggle.

QuidProJoe2020

Well if Kelce is not gonna be on the team that's rid of his contract frees up some space. But yea, they don't have mad money to get big name weapons. However, they can easily focus on drafting weapons as they are cheap. They certainly are in a different stage now with that big mahomes contract, but you can still maneuver cap to get some room to bring someone in plus draft some weapons. Think you make a great point though, it's gonna be rough for them unless they hit gem in the draft.

fondue4kill

Didn’t we see these same articles during Tom’s last few seasons in New England?

GHamPlayz

How often was Tom running slants?

imrickjamesbioch

This GM is a clown… Kelce is on pace to get his 8th straight 1k season and will probably finish somewhere between 1100-1200 yards. He also faces double and triple teams now Tyreek not there and the rest of the KC WR’s suck. Also Travis, especially the last couple years has never been confused as fast. He just knows how to get open and play football. With that said, it doesn’t take a genius to say a 34 year old TE is slowing down and at the end of his career. T Gonzalez played til he was 37, Gates played til he was 38 but was washed his last couple seasons. So Travis probably has a couple years left in him unless he goes the LeBron route and takes a ton of special vitamins to play longer.

Abbey_Something

Could it be the Kelce is constantly getting double teamed because the receiving core sucks

willl_dearborn

Lol the best TE playing. I love the FUKC hate but this is dumb.

bobo_i_am

Good! Fucking do it Travis. I double dog dare you. Ride off in to the sunset and go kayaking some pipe on T-Swift and live your life. FTR!

mercedesblendz

Kelce looked like he was running at half speed during that play. I wonder if that was by design so he would get the end zone around the time the football was being batted around and maybe pick up a deflection for the TD.

crystalmerchant

Humans age. More at 11

killertrout1

Choice A: Play more football, grind out to be in peak physical condition. Work hard in practice, film study, games... Choice B: Retire and have more time to (checks notes) bang Taylor Swift? I know what I'm picking.

CitizenNaab

Fine with me. He’s a douche

Awesome_hospital

Needs to think more about football and not that damn girl

MillerTime5858

Shame.

shivaswrath

He’s got Tay Tay to retire on.

Podzilla07

How many extra seasons in playoff football did he play?

BobMossNanoTanks

He's gotta make time for Swift or she'll make a song about him.
