Chirp is one I highly recommend, played with them a few years ago and they’re a great group of guys. Same goes for Sabbatical Bob but they haven’t been as active recently, one could say they’re on…sabbatical.
Chirp is awesome. They mostly play in Ann Arbor though. Seems like the scene for that in Detroit proper is lacking.
Used to love the shows at Otis Supply. Wish whoever was booking those bands would get a job here somewhere.
That’s true, we played with them at the Blind Pig! Definitely miss the shows at Otis, got to see a favorite of mine, Couch, for the first time there and it shut down shortly after. Hope whoever was doing the booking for them sticks with it somewhere else, they’ve got the Loving Touch and Magic Bag right down the road that would be great venues to fill in with bands like that.
Laith Al Saadi is one of my favorites. He is from Ann Arbor and plays really great bluesy rock.
Working band that makes money? Mega 80s. Probably one of the best gigs in the region for a working musician. Those guys are always playing somewhere, though they are a tribute group.
I can’t name a BAND that currently fits that description, but I can name a DJ/Producer/Musician.
DJ Dez Andres…dude has been around forever and worked with Dilla, Slum Village, Moodymann, Shigeto, Amp Fiddler, Will Sessions…list goes on. He’s a super talented producer, musician (sick on the congas) and DJ and is always working.
Also, I think it’s worth mentioning Delano Smith who has been DJing in Detroit for almost 45 years I believe. He’s has recently been battling cancer and STILL plays gigs as much as any DJ in Detroit. An absolute legend in the scene.
I looooooove Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers! They always put on a great show! I’ve already got my tickets to see them at Bells in the fall. The only dud show I’ve been to with them was at the Loving Touch, and it was 100% the venue sucking. I have no interest in seeing another show there.
If you’re into guitar, any time you can catch Jim McCarty playing is a good show. Dude is an absolute legend from Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels to Cactus, The Rockets. Inspired Nugent to play guitar and has recorded with Jimi Hendrix.
Eric Goebel and the flying crowbars are great too.
Maybe not hustling so much but Saajtak is probably my favorite Detroit band. They have their own sound and they’re all incredibly talented at their craft.
Will Sessions. The best soul/R&B/jazz group around. You won't be disappointed
Great band. I wouldn't call them hustling though. They play like one gig every 6 months
I know. Sux man.
They need to quit their day jobs lol
WDET
If you’re into hip hop, Will Sessions is the backing band on Elzhi’s *Elmatic*. A remake of Illmatic but all about Detroit.
I've heard some of this. Thanks for reminding me ✌️
Pancho Villa's Skull
My boy Fortino on guitar!👍 Big thumbs up
MRKT is gonna be up your alley
they are definitely working hard
Cult of Spaceskull is a truly worthy successor to Gwar, though a bit more surf/punk
Fucking love them. Caught them at Sanctuary last month and am going to see them Friday at Old Miami.

Brett Lucas is also a dymamite guitar player
She invited me on stage to sing with her in a bar in Hamtramck years ago. Awesome lady.

Brothers Groove. And Other side bands Chris Codish, Skeeto Valdez and James Simonson perform with.

Not a Detroit band but is a Michigan band Joe Hertler and The Rainbow Seekers

And they are funky, groovy, and hardworking, too. First band I thought of when I read OP’s post, although they don’t live in Detroit.
The Handgrenades are a lot of fun.
Snafu Self Absorbed Never Ending Game
BAAAAD BEAAATT
Detroit Party Marching Band
HAKI! Funky, groovy, good people, great shows
Black swan dive bomb if you're into punk
The Orbitsuns. Country/rock.
If you consider DJs to be musicians then boy is Detroit the town for you
Carbon Decoy if you’re into fuzzy garage rock
Planet D Nonet
Strictly Fine are a really fun funk group with a great live show
Low Key !!! Where did you go
Tito
Picnic
Moravian is a great up and coming band! They could become Mainstream easily tbh it’s so catchy
Camino Kid does a great show and seems to play pretty regularly

Resurrection Story. Very proggie band. Fun sound and something you can dance to or sway too.
“The band mint” is a great live show. Mix of hip hop, funk, psychedelic

Jeb Busch Lite!!

Strictly Fine is a great show, that should fit your funky/groovy request. They’ll be at the Willis show bar 7/25 per their website!
Bad Beat, Never Ending Game, D Bloc, Wounded Touch. Get in the pit nerd.
I been out of touch just surviving in SW.. I appreciate this question. Love to see some good music no matter genre. Thank you people
LL7 for Latin Jazz
Timmy's Organism
MRKT
Gonna need a genre. There are too many great bands in Detroit right now!
I was thinking of doing a different post for each genre... This one's just funk then?
If you want rock/heavy rock/metal I'm your guy with the recs.
Checker
I wish Midnight Gold was still around
Moravian
