His cap hit is $4 mil and any bonus money that's over the cap can be deferred to next year, when the cap should go up. That's why it is 1 year instead of 2 or 3. I was frankly shocked with myself and how much I was liking him as a Red Wing. I wasn't super pessimistic going into it, when things were still in the rumor stage, but man. A month in and he meshed so well, so early, and was putting up good numbers.

NYR is waiting for Trouba’s trade to open up cap space to sign Kane but Trouba is not making it easy for NYR. I think that changes things for Kane.
And I don’t think he was going to Canada to play for Montreal for a year
By open market I mean getting offers outside of DET. Teams like CHI and MTL would have opened up their wallets for Kane on a one year deal.
My point per my reply is he didn’t make this decision based on money alone.
Knowing your place is secured this much earlier, gets a lot of acceleration going for his off-season. He just wants to get started, and Detroit knew they had the responsibility to get the ball rolling first or he checks out market. Stevie showing some insight and initiative to get this done.
Chicago's GM said they weren't taking him back. From the fact that Kane didn't go to market, we can be pretty sure he thought an offer from Chicago wasn't coming. I'm almost certain he'd take most offers to go back to Chicago because that's where his heart is.
It's hard when we have 4/5 guys who could all be on the 1st line with larks. If we had someone such as Stamkos as our 2C, I think our top 6 becomes much more stable.
My ideal is Danielson/Kasper make the squad and top 6 is more like:
Stamkos Larkin Raymond
Cat Danielson/Kasper Kane.
Kane has shown time and time again in his career that he can get the best out of young/new to the league players like Cat, Panarin, Saad for example.
