The Kings were also a much better defensive team. If he see’s 30 games this year in Detroit, his numbers will probably look closer to his 22-23 season in Ottawa.
The 23-24 Wings were probably comparable to the 22-23 Sens. Yzerman still has holes to fill on the blue line this coming season and needs better 2 way play from the forward group.
That said, some good addition by subtraction in the off season. Ghost and Perrons offensive play will be missed, but their defensive liabilities less so. Walman getting shipped out helps too - so long as they don’t try to replace him with another 6th/7th defensemen.
He put up .913/2.55 in 53 games. By comparison
Lyon - .904/3.05 in 44 GP
Reimer - .904/3.11 in 25 GP
Husso - .894/3.55 in 19 GP
He might be older but he still put up better numbers than all of our netminders and has playoff experience. This is a pretty solid upgrade.
\^lol exactly what people are missing when they do low-level analysis and don't watch games.
.913/2.55 in 53 games with everyone in front of him religiously playing a 131 trap. Contrasted with our willy nilly D strat paired with forwards allergic to backchecking.
Hopefully Yzerman gets us some help this offseason and some of the guys from last year get better. It was sad watching us give up 4-5 every night when we had a top-10 scoring offense most of the season.
Not signing Sprong back is going to do wonders. Even with his limited TOI he was the source of 1 high value chance against every game and it didn't show up in the regular stat sheet.
Better to have that roster spot open for the young bloods.
I really like this, Talbot's still a really good goaltender, and I think he can easily split with Lyon, especially for that price.
Question is what happens with Husso? Buyout? Trade? LTIRland?
My guess is training camp Husso has to show not only is he healthy but that he can make a save. He was flat out bad last year. No idea if that was due to injures. If he can’t stay healthy or raise his game, waived to AHL as depth
The amount of regression has been really hard to watch on Husso's end. Just a few years ago blues fans were split on if they should keep him or Binnington, now they feel like Binnington is probably the most deserving of a statue outside the arena when he retires.
Agreed. I hope he comes to camp in amazing shape and looks lights out. I doubt it. But hope he causes an issue and forces us to make a tough decision .
I hope it isn't the case but I wonder if his injury was a slow buildup until it just exploded. Could explain his decline that whatever it was is just hurting a little more every night until you can't play anymore
Yeah, if it cost a 2nd for a player like Walman it's probably going to take a lot more to take Husso's 4.5\~, if he isn't healthy/on top of his game it might be best to just let him tandem with Cossa in GR for the year, not like anyone's going to claim him off waivers.
Waive him. He’s Swiss cheese. Plus injury prone now. We have a couple young goalies that will have their opportunity by the time the talbot deal expires
We'll get 1.15M in cap relief, but the other 3.6M from his contract will still count. That's assuming we send Husso to GR. We could potentially buy him out. He's only got one year left on his contract so if we buy him out he will count 1.58M against the cap this season and next.
Don’t threaten me with a good time.
I just wish all this cap that’s open would find a favorite free agent or two of mine added.
I guess when we’ve given out $5M AAV FA deals recently, it hasn’t worked out (Copp, Chiarot), but I thought we could really improve the team with a Guentzel, Marchessault, or Necas type scoring forward.
I guess that’s Kane’s spot and maybe we’ll add Roy, or there’s room for a trade, but it seems like we have extra money, especially after ditching Walman. Maybe best to just eat the Husso deal this year so not to take dead money into future years.
Isn’t it too late to buy him out? In any case, I think they’re better off waiving him. The cap relief is still pretty good and it gives them more goalie depth in case Husso can rebound even a little.
Anything at league min kinda doesn’t matter too much, but the Husso extension was a big failure so Stevie might be tentative to make a big money move there. Hmmmm, what’s this pattern? Copp signing was a fail so no more $6M forward free agents. Chiarot signing was a fail so no more $5M defensemen. Yikes.
Steve really does seem to learn from his mistakes unlike Holland who just kept repeating them. Hilarious he signed Campbell to that monster deal at the first place, and dont get me started on his trade for Mike Green.
Dude had one track and he kept driving in that till the very end.
Pretty sure Holland had an ownership mandate to keep the team competitive and prevented from rebuilding how he wanted… not sure on that though.
Also… has Stevie learned from his mistakes or is he shell shocked?
Seems like he’s undergoing the consequences of his mistakes (less money avail to waste), but with more of a war chest who says he doesn’t do the same thing? Look for bargain in tier 2 when really it’s an overpay of tier 3..
Not sure why y’all are acting like this sucks, did you really want Gibson at 4million or so? This dude put up .913 and played over 50 games last season. He’s probably not getting close to 50 games this season and raises our floor in net
Yeah bigger problem in March was Seider being our only competent defenseman, not Lyons slump, although it was a horrible time for him to go into a slump
True to an extent for sure but you left out one of the best goalies of the rebuild, Bernier. He had some pretty anemic defense and still kept them in games.
Lyon/Talbot actually sounds like a decent pairing. I don’t know how Husso fits in anymore though and I hope we don’t get rid of Lyon to keep him around
I didn't know where you're from, but here in the South they call them Pell Mell.
I'm not a smoker, but that infuriates me every time I hear it.
READ THE BOX; IT SAYS NEITHER *PELL* OR *MELL*
Yep, Lyon wore down in March. Can't blame him though, he came into the season with 31 starts across 6 seasons with his previous high game starts being 15. Detroit asked him to start 43. That kind of jump in workload is taxing both physically and mentally. Going into this season I'm sure he'll be much better prepared.
I expect an even split for Lyon & Talbot to start the year, with the team taking turns riding whoever gets hot. With how the team should hopefully look this year, and the promise Lyon showed early last season, IMO if you give him 40+ games more evenly split across this season you can pencil in a .915+ SV% and sub 2.80 GAA.
He was also playing on an injury if the press interviews after the season are to be believed. Bro was playing harder and longer than he ever had in the nhl up until that point.
Yeah not sure the hate… Very fine goalie and worst case we waive? Someone would grab that contract and if not we can hide him in GR.
You’d think we just handed out a long contract to the guy like all these other GMs.
Solid signing, Stolarz only got $2M but Brossoit got $3.3M...
Rules out Gibson thankfully. Goals Saved Above Expected rankings last year:
#3 Stolarz in 27 starts for FLA
#10 Brossoit in 23 starts for WPG
#14 Talbot in 50 starts for LAK
#34 Lyon in 44 starts
#56 Reimer in 25 starts
#76 Husso in 19 starts
#91 Gibson in 46 starts for ANA
This is literally the kind of goalie move I was down for. Not super pricey and keeps from running it back with Husso/Lyon which just isn’t the option going forward if it can be avoided.
One year would have been better. I bet he’ll clear waivers when they send him down to the Griffins.
I like this better the signing Campbell for this role.
Sure hope we start with Talbot and Lyon in net. Unless Husso comes out swinging...last season Lyon was in the press box for a while to start the season
I had been assuming that we made the commitment to Husso (who already had played a season with the Wings so he had tenure) to be the starter. So unless he really shit the bed in training camp, he was in. Then Reimer and Lyon were probably playing for the backup spot. And Reimer either performed better, or they were pretty even and Reimer got the nod for being the veteran.
Lyon waited for his chance last year then came in hot. Through January he looked solid. Now check his save percentage in Feb, March and April. All sub .900. I like him but he’s a backup.
Talbot is a backup goalie who has failed as a starter in multiple clubs. Recently he was touted as the starter solution in Edmonton only to play so bad he lost his starting spot.
He isn't the solution we require. We need a legitimate great goalie who is capable of stealing us games and playing up to 60 games. He isn't it.
When more than two of his prospects graduate to the NHL. We were written off last year and yet again, made another step in the forward direction.
Doesn’t really matter how much truth I spit to you, you’ll keep complaining and getting (rightfully) downvoted.
I'm concerned that what seemed like a step in the right direction for the Red Wings might have been a mirage. With Seider and Raymond set to get paid, we're looking at losing an additional $9-12 million in cap space that we used last year to fill critical holes. Unless Seider and Raymond take significant steps forward this year, it's unlikely we'll be a playoff team with our current roster.
We desperately need to bolster our top 6 forwards and find a top 4 defenseman to avoid regressing. Without the cap space to address these needs, we'll have to rely on other players making massive leaps, which is unlikely. Who's going to replace Gostisbehere's production and fill the power play quarterback role? Who will step up to replace Sprong and Perron's production? There are too many holes to fill, and we lack the depth to do so without signing new players.
Yzerman's managing style and contract decisions are putting us in a difficult position. Without significant improvements from our young stars or new additions, we're at risk of struggling next year.
I know I have a reputation for being "Anti-Yzerman" on this sub, but the reality is that our GM's management isn't positioning us best for success. It's tough to admit, but we need to recognize that we aren't getting the best results from our front office.
We were never going to get an elite goaltender, that's reality. Is what it is, hoping to see Cossa be one of the presumable 3 we start the season with and get real time
I think 2 years is even worse than talbot himself. Now we commit to him being 1 of our 2 man shit rotation for 2 years? Means husso is gone tmrw which is fine, but clearly no upgrade coming in for 2 years till Cossa or Augustine
Why? 2.5 is easy to waive and send down or trade. Gives the team flexibility and his numbers would have made him the unquestioned starter for wings last year
No one is trading for the 37 year old goalie, waive possible sure. But that’s not gonna be the plan when husso is gone, yzerman has already come out and said we aren’t holding 3 goalies. Talbot is here the next two seasons.
Official now: https://twitter.com/DetroitRedWings/status/1807826036207296765
This isn’t too bad. Better than Reimer if/when Husso goes down again. He put up a .913% in 53 games last season.
He’s just better than Husso straight up too.
Exactly. 54 games this year .913 save percentage.
Yeah, very solid.
The Kings were also a much better defensive team. If he see’s 30 games this year in Detroit, his numbers will probably look closer to his 22-23 season in Ottawa.
They could dip but surely we can strive to be better defensively than 22-23 Sens
I agree while we haven’t made the most exciting moves I feel we are improving defensively from last year.
Thank god we're letting Sprong walk. That alone will shave off \~65 high value chances against our goalies.
He put up .913/2.55 in 53 games. By comparison Lyon - .904/3.05 in 44 GP Reimer - .904/3.11 in 25 GP Husso - .894/3.55 in 19 GP He might be older but he still put up better numbers than all of our netminders and has playoff experience. This is a pretty solid upgrade.
He also played behind a much better defense. Our goaltender play hasn't been amazing, but the defense in front of them is like swiss cheese.
\^lol exactly what people are missing when they do low-level analysis and don't watch games. .913/2.55 in 53 games with everyone in front of him religiously playing a 131 trap. Contrasted with our willy nilly D strat paired with forwards allergic to backchecking.

Agreed - this is a tidy piece of work by GMSY. Good term to allow our young goalies to mature. Reasonable price.
Husso can stay down honestly lol
Not bad, it’s the second year that I worry about but that’s a season removed
I really like this, Talbot's still a really good goaltender, and I think he can easily split with Lyon, especially for that price. Question is what happens with Husso? Buyout? Trade? LTIRland?

Seemed like his first season with Detroit he had a really good start too
I hope it isn't the case but I wonder if his injury was a slow buildup until it just exploded. Could explain his decline that whatever it was is just hurting a little more every night until you can't play anymore

Waive him. He’s Swiss cheese. Plus injury prone now. We have a couple young goalies that will have their opportunity by the time the talbot deal expires
What happens to our cap if he passes waivers unclaimed?
We'll get 1.15M in cap relief, but the other 3.6M from his contract will still count. That's assuming we send Husso to GR. We could potentially buy him out. He's only got one year left on his contract so if we buy him out he will count 1.58M against the cap this season and next.

Isn’t it too late to buy him out? In any case, I think they’re better off waiving him. The cap relief is still pretty good and it gives them more goalie depth in case Husso can rebound even a little.
He makes more than $4M so there is a possibility to buy him out if Veleno goes to arbitration.
I’m not an expert on all the cap stuff but we did just sign another GT. Jack Campbell funny enough, so he might be the 3rd guy/emergency
Anything at league min kinda doesn’t matter too much, but the Husso extension was a big failure so Stevie might be tentative to make a big money move there. Hmmmm, what’s this pattern? Is this a racist comment?
Swiss cheese has holes in it
Husso only has one year left on his deal. You ride that out. Worst case he rides pine all year and that money is freed up next season.
Trade. Husso was never anything to write home about and Lyon proved much better. If we had a better defemsive core, Lyon would've looked amazing.
Since me and Talbot were born on the exact same day I will not tolerate *any* comments about him being too old.
I, for one, appreciate his youthful appearance and performances.
He’s not. He’s exactly the right age. Not younger, not older, just right.
36 is the new 26
I'm younger than Yzerman! We'll leave it at that. :D
Not sure why y’all are acting like this sucks, did you really want Gibson at 4million or so? This dude put up .913 and played over 50 games last season. He’s probably not getting close to 50 games this season and raises our floor in net
Raising the goaltending floor should be a noticeable improvement For 2.5M a season this could be incredible value to improve the team
Doesn't matter what goalie we get, Greiss, Ned, Husso, with shitty D continuing, any goalie is gonna struggle.
If he didn't help Ottawa make the playoffs, he isn't helping Detroit make the playoffs. Yzerman is fucking up.
Lyon/Talbot actually sounds like a decent pairing. I don’t know how Husso fits in anymore though and I hope we don’t get rid of Lyon to keep him around
Lyon and Talbot sounds like a menswear chain.
"Lyon and Talbot. We'll save your look and shutout your wallet."
![gif](giphy|sDcfxFDozb3bO)
Very classy haberdashery! Bow ties and ascots, houndstooth and bespoke shoes...😂
Sounds like a cigarette to me. Benson and Hedges, Lyon and Talbot, Pall and/or Mall
I didn't know where you're from, but here in the South they call them Pell Mell. I'm not a smoker, but that infuriates me every time I hear it. READ THE BOX; IT SAYS NEITHER *PELL* OR *MELL*
For that contract, I’ll take it. Was starting to sour on the Gibson idea, tbh…
This deal is fine lmfao it’s a cheap backup for Lyon. .913 in 53 games played last year. Him being old is the only downside but at that AAV it’s fine.
I think he challenges to be the starter. But way better to have him play 40 games and split. Lyon looked like he wore down as season went on
Yep, Lyon wore down in March. Can't blame him though, he came into the season with 31 starts across 6 seasons with his previous high game starts being 15. Detroit asked him to start 43. That kind of jump in workload is taxing both physically and mentally. Going into this season I'm sure he'll be much better prepared. Exactly. We kept getting guys like Neds and Husso that never started over 50 games. This was worth a shot
He was also playing on an injury if the press interviews after the season are to be believed. Bro was playing harder and longer than he ever had in the nhl up until that point.
I think Lyon should probably back up Talbot tbh. It'll probably be a pretty even split either way.
Yeah not sure the hate… Very fine goalie and worst case we waive? Someone would grab that contract and if not we can hide him in GR. You’d think we just handed out a long contract to the guy like all these other GMs.
I clearly can't do math today. Thought he was only 27. He was in top 10 of GAA and %. Nothing to sneeze at and low salary makes this better than fine.
This is an instant upgrade at goalie. 2.5 GAA and .913 SV% with the Kings, way better than our goalie situation was last season.
Is there a way to pull numbers to compare the defensive support for Talbot last year to get an idea what that might mean for this year?
he played 50 games and they made the playoffs so i would assume their d is much better than ours
Love it. Stevie said we won’t keep 3 goalies this year so let’s hope we find a suitor for Husso, and not Lyon.
Fr I know people are down on Husso, but I think it's our fault. We broke him. I still think he's a solid goalie and needs a change of scenery.
he has a bum groin. he might be cooked
He played well last season and played a shit ton of games. Good signing IMO. Just wish he was a little younger lol.
Much better than committing longer to a much more expensive option in Gibson. Happy with this
Pretty pretty good signing
![gif](giphy|d2jjIRvGomz6GMkU|downsized)
I wanted Stolarz but Talbot is alright, depends on the day
Yeah I really wanted Stolarz too. But I’ll give him a shot.
Much better than Reimer
Talbot/Lyon/Husso. Good enough for now.
Solid signing, Stolarz only got $2M but Brossoit got $3.3M... Rules out Gibson thankfully. Goals Saved Above Expected rankings last year: #3 Stolarz in 27 starts for FLA #10 Brossoit in 23 starts for WPG #14 Talbot in 50 starts for LAK #34 Lyon in 44 starts #56 Reimer in 25 starts #76 Husso in 19 starts #91 Gibson in 46 starts for ANA
Love it
No Gibson, I like that about it.
This is literally the kind of goalie move I was down for. Not super pricey and keeps from running it back with Husso/Lyon which just isn’t the option going forward if it can be avoided.
Love it. Is Husso staying?
All-star goalie
I'll have to dig out my Red Wings flags and get ready for the parade down Woodward.
lets goooooo
i remember he looked really good that one playoffs with the wild
One year would have been better. I bet he’ll clear waivers when they send him down to the Griffins. I like this better the signing Campbell for this role.
Damn, he is 37 this Friday. Hope he still has some in the tank.
Bob turns 36 in a couple of months and he just won a cup
I wish we got Ullmark, but I’ll take anything resembling a wall
Another 1B caliber stop gap is hard to get too excited about, but it's a team friendly deal. Don't hate it
And Alex Lyon, again, somehow will managed to be the 1A next year
Roughly the same age Osgood was in '08
Feeling very whelmed
Meh He's a goalie, that's for sure
Thats fine, and im just happy that it isnt Gibson lol. Idealy just for one year tho, but what ever
Meh. Looks like we are rolling three goalies again? And none that I would expect to be anything better than league average, if we are even so lucky.
Much of the goaltending is about the defense in from of them. You improve that the goaltending improves.
Where does he rank with Husso and Lyon
—————-
Probably better than Husso. I'm guessing Husso is destined for GR. If he gets his groove back maybe he returns to the A Team
I like Cam Talbot, I like his play style and he's always seemed like a solid guy.
Oh fuck yeah dude. For 2.5 I’m very happy about that
Looks like a nice bridge deal until Cossa is ready…ltir maybe be getting a room ready for Husso.
This is the epitome of "whelmed". Cant believe we couldn't match WSH trading a 3rd for Logan Thompson. Unreal.
Kind of newly into sports, where do you go to keep an eye on potential trades?
I usually just go on r/hockey and see all the transactions that happened throughout the day via people/bots posting to Reddit
Great signing by the Wings, I’d rather have Brossoit at 2x3.3 though.
I’m a hockey casual, but this feels like good value and addresses a need, experts is this solid?
Sure hope we start with Talbot and Lyon in net. Unless Husso comes out swinging...last season Lyon was in the press box for a while to start the season
Make me wonder was Lyon really suck at practice or what, to me out of three, Lyon is the better goalie in the end
Lord my faith in the Yzerplan has been tested this week, but I STILL BELIEVE. ^((But like Talbot, really???))
And they just signed fricken Jack Campbell of all goalies. Detroit ain't making the playoffs again this year. Fml
Just saw that we also picked up Jack Campbell? So Lyon is gone too?
I like this signing. He's not going to win any awards, but he's a solid goalie to tandem with Lyon and gives our prospects some time to develop.
He isn't it.
literally didn't realize he was still playing ![gif](giphy|jPAdK8Nfzzwt2|downsized)
He went to the all star game last year
People still watch that?
He played in the first round this year.
Oh..
Feels uneventful man
Ouch
Sweet, we needed mediocre goaltending
Unironically yes we did. Mediocre is better than Reimer and a broken Husso and at 2.5M it’s cheap as hell.
😭
Nice…I guess.
And now we have 3 goalies again. Something’s gotta give. Yzerman said he wouldn’t do the 3 goalie thing again this year.
Lol.
Steve put down the pipe please
I was hoping you would delete your account by now. Our favorite unrealistic Yzerman critic.
Were in 5 years of a rebuild under Yzerman. At what point is simply making the playoffs too much to ask for?
Average goaltending would go a looooong way for making the playoffs. Husso/Lyon is a garbage tier tandem
This will definitely go down as one if the signings in Detroit History. Giant meh on this one, but everyone else just got scooped up real quick like.
![gif](giphy|LyJ6KPlrFdKnK)
Steve's cookin...slop
Can't say that here. Today is the day of "all of steve's previously shit contracts now look good" ya know, that elite level cope

No one is trading for the 37 year old goalie, waive possible sure. But that’s not gonna be the plan when husso is gone, yzerman has already come out and said we aren’t holding 3 goalies. Talbot is here the next two seasons.
Not really, some teams might want insurance at trade deadline for playoffs Lots of goalies have been traded by TDL
Love are 3B goalies don’t we
For fuck sake
