First off, might steal this that's amazing! As for an idea, how about a long-lasting war/feud they instigated as some form of manipulation to achieve a goal they barely remember.
A few ideas off the top of my head: dead humanoids always rise when buried in a certain area. People who live here have adopted strategies to prevent or circumvent this (burying people with knives across their throats for when they sit up, decapitation, sea burials, whatever else makes sense!).
Crops always yield fewer seeds than are required to fill the field the next season.
All animals are aggressive, including prey animals.
It might be interesting to lean into urban legends for ideas, and then edit them slightly to fit the fantasy setting.
Maybe stuff in an area he had an experimental lab in has necrotic energy contamination? Lich didn't do anything around or to people, just hung around for a while and left the magical equivalent of nuclear radiation residue?
He didn't even do anything directly, just polluted the soil.
And his pet will o the wisp escaped and has lured dozens of people to their dooms but hey. It was a good reading light.
