We started a campaign using these rules. It didn't last long, as games often don't. See if they meet your needs. https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-LX4yHeg3_fD-cb5AYlb

Awesome, Ty Ty. I saw this, but wanted to get some opinions first.

Gorilla-Samurai

Are you kidding me? People complained about a NPC in CoS needing to hide a wooden leg because they felt she was being shamed, and Wizards actually revamped the damn thing. Dark Sun would reeeeeaaaally not work in today's social scenario, I doubt Wizards will be touching it anytime soon. Your best bet is reaching to other veterans who played it back in the day and see what they have cooked up.

CaptainRandomGuy

I am intrigued by your line of thought, but I agree with your suggestion I was seeking veteran players. But I honestly want to hear more on your thoughts as to whybDark Sun would not work in today's social climate?

Gorilla-Samurai

Pick one, slavery, famine, cannibalism, racism.

CaptainRandomGuy

But, all of those things can/do exist in Forgotten Realms. Neogi Slavers and Arena Combat cover slavery, there are several adventure modules that have the heros saving a town/hamlet beset with famine, several of the playable races (Lizardfolk for example) practice cannibalism, and racism in D&D has existed since 2nd Ed. I can understand your basic argument, in that these are all trigger topics, but I'm not seeing a reason for Dark Sun to be so socially unacceptable as to just Kibosh it.

Gorilla-Samurai

> But, all of those things can/do exist in Forgotten Realms. Neogi Slavers and Arena Combat cover slavery Which is the reason 5e has all but deleted most parts of FR outside the Sword Coast, focusing on that specific region. Also, I don't lizardfolk eating other races is cannibalism. Point being, in Dark Sun, all of that was normal, you could find mechanical benefits in owning slaves or BEING slaves, that would blow the lid right off people today.

CaptainRandomGuy

I can follow that line of thought. I don't necessarily agree, but I can see your point.

CaptainRandomGuy

I could understand the view that it would be immensely unpopular with a generation of players that are used to getting trophies for joining a team and mediocre existences, but to say that difficult subject matter would be a non-starter. This is a game that survived the 80s and 90s accusing it of being a source of Satanism and murder in teens.

Gorilla-Samurai

Oh yeah, that's why you still have people like you and me who played that and remember it, but the younger folk don't remember something they've never seen and trying to re-introduce Dark Sun with such a big company like Wizards (who pander to people crying), I think it's very unlikely. I think we might see something like that with Free League (like they did with MYZ), smaller and more focused on doing what THEY want, instead of worrying about what will trigger PTSD on a 14 year old, and they've been getting some interesting licenses.

CaptainRandomGuy

...sigh...

absurdchrono

There arent any Dark Sun 5e resources out there unless you dig around for someone elses conversion efforts.

CaptainRandomGuy

Oh, I am aware, I was just seeing if anyone had any preferences or recommendations for the Homebrew available

KiyuSanjin

If you are looking for environment ideas: Tasha's would be my recommendation. On another note: Princes of the Apocalypse has a interesting part in the end where it shows options to adopt it in settings similar to older dnd versions (if I understood it correctly) maybe give that a look.

CaptainRandomGuy

Tasha's has some good material for extreme environments, but I'm look for that Athas you are probably gonna die twice feel. I will have to look into that portion of Princes of the Apocalypse.

CaptainRandomGuy

Ty ty, btw

guilersk

Athas.org had/has a ton of 3.x conversions although I don't know how much 5e material they have. They seem to have some kind of podcast played in 5e though, and perhaps you could find some rules via that.

CaptainRandomGuy

I will look into that, ty
