There was a post somewhere (I'm coming from a multireddit so it could have been anywhere) that showed side beside what the ua listed vs what was in fizbans book and how it was massively nerfed. I would say it wasn't great compared to what they showed us originally.

Thanks,

Nada

fendermallot

Uh... De nada?

Karth9909

But that's the question, were those nerfs required or overkill?

The proficiency bonus and ki option is a definite design improvement that should be applied to all monk features, so I don't mind the bump in ki cost. Augmented breath is a boring change to a cumbersome size, and the lingering effect was a lot more interesting. Otherwise I'm ambivalent. Shrinking Aspect of the Wyrm to 10 feet is a bummer and nuking the nova for an optional fear nova sucks. I'm sure someone pointed out "oh, but paladins!" while this change was being implemented, and I think that's reductive. I would be more upset about it if monks didn't have a lot of movement, but one type of resistance to one or two allies is still a drag, especially since its not a reaction. The hit or miss on the capstone is needlessly harsh.

My feel is that of this was released years ago it wouldn't have been an issue but with the power creep that has been introduced with xanathar's and Tasha's it seems very underpowered. I liked the UA better and if a player in my game wanted to play the UA I would be ok with it.

Ars-Tomato

I wouldn’t say massively nerfed tbh, some of it was overdue, some of it a little heavy handed, I was near the end of campaign playing a level 11 Dragon monk and giving everyone within 30ft of me the ability to do a d8 of damage as a reaction was insanely busted and I felt bad for my DM The aura shrink sucks, however the range increase for the dragons breath is pretty incredible as a trade, losing the clinging effect sucks, and takes away from the monk’s ability to like 1v1, however, being able to absolutely pop off with a 60ft cone breath attack gives monk AOE that it’s never dreamed of,

Gi6son

Only a handful of games get that far to even get that 60 ft cone breath so yeah that should have been at the 11th level imo

Ars-Tomato

That’s fair, however I def see like the full on “your party is up against an entire army of 2000 skeletons” fights happening more at like 17, so like your Monk running around with 6 60ft cone/90 ft line (another 8 of those if you spend Ki) aoe’s against an army will keep you relevant for much cheaper cost while the Wizard’s throwing around fireballs,

Gi6son

That situation would be fucking amazing I just think the abilities are in the wrong spots and maybe the ki consumption is a little bit much

Ars-Tomato

Yeah they definitely used a little too heavy of a Hand IMO but I can see like their thought process behind most of it, 20 extra 60ft cone dragons breaths a short rest would be pretty wild
