Issues with WSAVA compliance aside, the amount of issues I've heard about the shipping and delivery alone would deter me from using any of those brands. I've heard of so many dogs getting sick off of those foods. I'd just stick with a nice science backed kibble, I love pro plan, my dog has great poops, is a great weight and in perfect health

rangerdanger_9

I personally will not feed Farmers dog due to the high fat content. I have a Bachelors in Animal Science and we talked about the ideal ranges for percentages of fats, proteins, etc. and farmers dog is above that ideal range I was taught. High fat levels can lead to pancreatitis and if you even just look through reddit you will see that people have said their dogs have gotten pancreatitis while on this food. I also saw another post just today about their dog getting DCM while on the farmers dog. None of the brands you listed meet WSAVA guidelines either. I don’t trust any of them as they don’t have enough research backing them. I think they’re all “boutique brands” which is risky business when it comes to feeding your dog. If you want to add some fresh food to her diet, you can buy unsalted sardines and just plop some on her food on the days you don’t have time to cook an egg! It will save you time and is a fun (although stinky) treat. Or even if you buy some hard boiled eggs too. Good toppers are great however I believe they work best with a science backed diet. I hope this helps!

fort_lipton

Bottled salmon oil could be another option and possibly an easier one

Complimentbinary

Yes they make it with the pump so it’s super easy

KittenHairington

I will second this and say there is canned salmon in water with no salt added that goes great as a fresh, healthy kibble topper. I think there may even be 0 salt canned chicken you can get online to keep in the pantry

CityBoiNC

TJ's has great fish in water for toppers and are reasonably priced

WillTheThrill86

This is true. If you look around it'd possible to find salmon and even other canned fish in only wate no salt added, like mackerel and sardines.

PJ_Sleaze

Yep, tried Farmers Dog, vomiting and diarrhea followed. Stopped right after that and she’s been fine, I would not do that again.

KTEliot

i hear so many horror stories about Farmers Dog. Seems like all they got right is their marketing.

morganamp

We tried farmers for our two Aussies. When I explained to my wife that it would be cheaper to purchase ribeyes from Costco we stopped the subscription.

WillTheThrill86

Yeah, as someone that supplements my dogs dry food with various toppers and proteins this was my first thought. I priced out farmers and another one and I'm like wait, I could just buy straight up turkey, steak, or fish for less money?

tx3girl

I’m adding this here too. It is in the thread at the top. So I have my puppy on farmers dog just started her. Yalls comments make me nervous!!!! The problem is she won’t eat kibble at all! I have a bag of Hill and I’m at a loss. Help on ways to get her to take the kibble? I also have toppers I use to get her to eat. What could I put on the kibble to get her to eat???? She’s a Pom and will be 11 weeks tomorrow. She’s little too and I need this baby to eat!!!!!

rangerdanger_9

Will she eat wet food? Hills wet food is a safe option!

tx3girl

She will but not as well as this farmers dog. I’m going to try and just slowly add more kibble into her food slowly and see how that goes.

rangerdanger_9

This might be where a little tough love comes in. A healthy dog will not starve themselves. Offer her food at the times you plan on feeding, and if she doesn’t finish it pick it up and throw it away. For example of you feed breakfast and dinner, offer her breakfast and if she doesn’t eat it within 10 minutes, take it away and offer her food again at dinner. It’s possible she may skip a few meals, but I promise if she’s hungry she will give in and eat. However, if she goes 3 days without eating get her into the vet asap for a checkup. Not eating for that long would indicate a more serious problem!

tx3girl

Yeah I’ve thought I may need to do a little of this is what you get kid and go from there. She does get excited to eat and will wait for it. It’s just if it’s not what she likes she’ll pick at it or walk away.

mkwb80

Be prepared that she may throw up yellow foam at some point during the standoff when she is hungry but still thinks she can win 🫤

TheWhiteRabbitY2K

What would you suggest overall then?

rangerdanger_9

Typically I recommend sticking to Purina, Hills, & Royal Canin. If in the U.S. I would add Iams and Eukanuba to that list. I want to also clarify I’m not against fresh food diets! I just don’t like the current brands on the market. If you want to feed fresh food, I recommend speaking to your vet about getting a consult with a board certified veterinary nutritionist. They can help you formulate a complete and balanced homemade diet. Just be sure that it’s a board certified veterinary nutritionist you’re working with and not a “Pet Nutrition Coach” or “Certified Canine Nutritionist.” A nutritionist is not a protected title so anyone can claim to be one. A board certified veterinary nutritionist will have the proper credentials to help you!

lostinsnakes

What are your thoughts on the DIY Farmer’s Dog where you buy the ingredients and cook per their recipes and add the nutrient packet once it’s cooled?

rangerdanger_9

It’s not something I’m personally comfortable with. I just don’t trust Farmers Dog due to the fact they use fear mongering in order to guilt people into feeding it. I would much rather they put that money into meeting WSAVA guidelines instead. If you want to feed fresh food, try speaking to your vet about getting a consult with a board certified veterinary nutritionist. They can help you formulate a complete and balanced diet that you can make at home. But make sure to use a board certified veterinary nutritionist and not a “Pet Nutritionist Coach” or a “Certified Canine Nutritionist.”

Illustrious-Bee1699

the best you can feed is simply going to be a safe, balanced food. none of those you listed are either. the best favor you can do for your dog, though it won't seem glamorous, is purina pro plan, hills, or royal canin. it's a very serious problem with marketing and misleading consumers. i fed a "fresh, healthy" food, and it killed my dog. i found out too late that there are many reports sent to the FDA about these untested foods causing fatal disease and lacking in proper nutrients. take it from someone who lost their best friend. it's not worth it.

MistakeOk2518

I used Ollie for a very short time (2 weeks) my pup loved it! Didn’t use it that long to see a lot of change tho. Her coat was soft and shiny and poops were good. The reasons I stopped were I started to question the “truth and honesty” of the ingredients (was it really what my dog needed,) the price and the “convenience.” It was not convenient in the least. Truly started to feel a little too “gimmicky” for me. I switched to Hills lamb and brown rice because of the “science and proof” behind their reputation and have zero regrets! Her coat is still soft and shiny, poops are even better and she loves it! That being said she’d love anything that came in her “supper bowl!” I would do anything to provide my pup with the best that I could as most of us would! I just didn’t feel Ollie was the answer.

mediacontrols

We tried Farmer’s Dog. It made my dogs so sick. Feeding Royal Canine canned now with zero problems. They love it, too.

donapuglisi

I saw a TikTok (so take with a grain of salt) but they said that their dog had a severe problem due to bacteria in the Farmer’s Dog. Their vet said it was a common thing they’ve been seeing with other dogs.

umm-iced

I saw this too! I saw someone in the comments saying that they work for FedEx and sometimes the food would sit on the truck over night! Same with hello fresh products. Again take this with a grain of salt as well

PashasMom

I'm only going to feed foods that meet the highest WSAVA standards unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. In your situation, I would consider a canned food such as Purina One, IAMS (for budget-friendly options) or Eukanuba, Science Diet, Pro Plan, or Royal Canin -- one that meets the highest standards and has a long history and lots of research behind it. Most of these foods can be fed more cheaply than a subscription "fresh" food anyway (might not be a factor for you but it is for me).

Succmynugz

I use Just For Dogs as a topper for my dog, sometimes the frozen ones and sometimes the pantry fresh ones. I enjoy it, he enjoys it, and for a dude with a sensitive tummy it hasn't been giving him any issues so far.

avocado4ever000

I was thinking of trying this! I have a retail store for them nearby. Currently on Farmers Dog.

ArrogantAmature

Consult your vet first, but salmon oil in the food is good for coat. As far as mixing in some home cooked stuff, I often boil some brown rice and chicken, tear the chicken up, and stick it in the fridge. It makes a great little meal topper that is healthy, and helps with my dogs chronic pancreatitis (can't process fats, basically constant diarrhea). I've also tried various 'human grade' type meals like Farmers Dog, but my dog didn't really seem to notice the difference, and his bowl problems actually got worse... Based on what I know, which is just what the internet and my vet tell me, \*good\* kibble (e.g. Hills, Royal Canin) is the safest and most nutrient dense option for your pup. A lot of instagram adds really hit the guilt button about food basically not looking yummy to us humans, but that's just marketing.

Complimentbinary

I’d try adding fish oil, salmon oil specifically. I’ve heard those subscriptions aren’t very good. What kibble do you give her?

Culture-Economy

We did farmers dog for our dog and he liked it but it is expensive just to ship it so we had to stop delivery for him. But it also made our dog sick with some of the food

critterwalk

None of these are WSAVA compliant. Switch to Purina, Hills, Royal Canin, Iams, or Eukanuba.

menaris1

I tried Farmers Dog for a bit while they were having a 50% off promotion. Dog did ok on it but it was actually quite inconvenient. It takes up a lot of freezer space and you have to remember to defrost it 24hrs prior

Avaacodo_toast

We use spot and tango - both dogs love it but for one the tear stains are pretty bad😕 I don’t think it’s the best food for her but we’ve tried 2-3 different brands and she doesn’t eat.

lunanightphoenix

If she’s not eating then she needs to see the vet. Healthy dogs don’t starve themselves with a bowl full of food in front of them.

Avaacodo_toast

She has always been super picky. This is not unlike her:) we went to the vet for a different reason a few weeks ago and the vet told us that if she likes this food, we can keep her on it and some dogs just have tear stains. Also, sometimes dogs just aren’t hungry, they can go a day without eating, as long as they’re drinking water, acting themselves and they have energy.

Leather-Health-1440

Omg my chihuahua has had the worst tear stains and has been eating the spot & tango turkey!!!

musicbabe1996

JustFoodForDogs

fashdrum

We still use Just Food for Dogs and have had a good experience. We also pick it up from the local store where they have a kitchen so it’s very fresh.

tx3girl

So I have my puppy on farmers dog just started her. Yalls comments make me nervous!!!! The problem is she won’t eat kibble at all! I have a bag of Hill and I’m at a loss. Help on ways to get her to take the kibble? I also have toppers I use to get her to eat. What could I put on the kibble to get her to eat???? She’s a Pom and will be 11 weeks tomorrow. She’s little too and I need this baby to eat!!!!!

atlantisgate

The maximum time you could’ve tried kibble is like two weeks right? What was she on? How long?

tx3girl

I’ve been still giving her kibble mixed in. It’s hills. I’ve had her since June 8. She picks around the kibble. I have seen her eat like 4 pieces just bc without any mixed in. She’s only right at 2lbs so I get nervous if she doesn’t eat.

atlantisgate

You need to speak to a vet about this. But it’s not really reasonably to say a dog won’t eat one variety of kibble for two weeks so they need fresh food.

tx3girl

I did speak to a vet about it. They said as long as she was getting calories each day and acting fine otherwise, it’ll get better. I could have done some of this myself considering I have just been worried about her eating enough. However, I didn’t give her fresh food bc she wasn’t eating kibble. I did it bc she’d eat the wet food and when I tried pet plate she ate that much better than the wet food or the kibble.

atlantisgate

I’d swap back to a fully science backed option asap! Hills is great

tx3girl

I am going to, for sure!

avocado4ever000

My dog is on Farmers Dog and she’s pretty happy and healthy so… I dk, I think it’s ok? The rescue I adopted her from also used it.

Maleficent_Tax_5045

The only fresh food I would recommend is Just Food for Dogs and that is because that do feeding trials, high quality controls and it’s the only fresh food that is recommended by vets. JFFD also have RX fresh foods which I have also seen vets prescribe. If you are looking for a more “holistic” food, I recommend The Honest Kitchen as they do feeding trials and have high quality controls. Otherwise go with the tried and true, Purina, Royal canin or hills.

Maleficent_Tax_5045

All the other fresh brands though I think are a rip off and all marketing. If you want to add fresh, cook up some eggs, chicken, or beef and add. Just don’t do more then 20% of the fresh with kibble as it will unbalance the diet.

Beneficial-Union-229

I called nutrapet and explained my dog is on a limited diet due to allergies. And is a very fussy eater. I asked for a sample to see if he would like it as I didn’t want order a full order to find out my dog refused to eat. Plus the cost was almost $100. They refused to send me a sample. I said I would not order from them. They offered 10% off the food. I said this doesn’t solve my problems. Their response was I guess we can’t help you They won’t stay in business long if they do business this way.

No_Pressure_7481

I was given some Bella & Duke raw (I use a small amount as topper on kibble) and it did not agree with my dog at all, even in the tiny amounts he had it. I think it was very very oily. I ended up binning the whole lot. My other dog came with some butternut box cooked food as a puppy; he was itchy & stinky on it and has thrived since I transitioned him onto the food I use. It was all sorts of weird flavours as well, I mean "chicken curry" flavour which was chicken & turmeric, pork that smelled incredibly strongly of herbs - dogs don't need that shit. Personally I think these subscription companies are an absolute scam and won't ever be using them myself. If a subscription makes your life easier find a company that will deliver mainstream commercial diets to your door on a schedule. Why not add something as a supplement to the kibble that you don't have to cook. What is the issue with her poop - too hard or too soft? If it's too hard you might need to find a kibble with lower fibre content or it might be that she's a bit dehydrated; try adding some water to it. A lot of animals are designed to get the majority of their water from their diet rather than drinking; dogs aren't as bad at this as cats are but it does still apply to them. If it's too soft you've got the opposite problem and would benefit from adding a fibre supplement such as Protexin Profibre. For her coat - any supplement with fish oil. Or get her fish skin treats. And make sure you're grooming her regularly; even on short coated dogs brushing gets the blood flowing to the skin and helps it "breathe", prevents the build up of dander which is what makes the coat look so dull. If she's long coated make sure you're removing all the dead undercoat as well - a coat rake can be your friend. I didn't realise how scurfy my Cavs skin had gotten as despite daily brushing a very thick undercoat had developed and once this was removed his coat was much shinier again.

mac695

We got sucked into Farmers Dog and spent more on our dog’s food than our own food… for no good reason. She was fine on it, but it’s sooooo expensive and we learned too late that it’s not actually that nutritious for dogs. We’re switching to Purina wet food since others here had recommended it as vet approved.

avocado4ever000

I have my dog on farmers dog and she likes it. She’s only 1-2 but she seems happy and healthy. But I may try Just Food For Dogs after seeing these comments.

Hansoncarolann

My dog loved Farmers Dog and they are easy to work with. However, her Pancreatitis came back and my vet told me many dogs couldn’t tolerate the high fat. She’s off FD and eating boiled chicken breast, rice, pumpkin and fat free turkey bone broth. I’m slowly adding hill’s vet prescription wet food to her chicken. She’s doing so much better. It was suggested I stay with one of the prescription diets as she is prone to Pancreatitis.

Slight_Meeting_1912

I am so happy to hear that she is doing better!

Asleep_Algae2827

My Dog has been on Nom Nom fresh delivery for about 7 months. It has really helped his digestion and overall health. We are really happy with it and so is he. He only likes the chicken and sweet potato recipe so we don’t even switch it up! He had so many tummy troubles on kibble.

crustystalesaltine

I feel like 90% of the pancreatitis or chronic GI cases I’ve seen the last 3 years have been on Farmer’s Dog, Stella and Chewy’s, or some other similar brand variant. Now, do the dogs love it? For sure, it’s delicious but I would save your money on the subscription and the vet bills and invest in a high quality, heavily researched wet or dry food

winterose246

I feed my dog Just Food for Dogs since she was a puppy which recommended by my vet. Dog loves it and she has the cleanest teeth for a 3 year old. No bad breath and beautiful coat of hair.

lobsterbandito

My dog hated Farmers Dog, but she's been on Ollie for over a year and no problems. She's not a fan of the chicken, but will eat all the other flavors.

Cherokeerayne

I tried Ollie but my pup is super picky so she only like the lamb food and they didn't have the lamb flavour the time I went to reorder.

Shoulder_Downtown

I buy spot & tango unkibble to use as training treats. It actually works great because my dog thinks they're a treat, I can feed him a little less of his regular food, and the little pellets are clean and a good size for tossing around. I've tried the beef and fish flavors (my dog has a chicken allergy) and they both were well liked. I agree with what everyone else is saying about wsava, the cost, deliveries, etc

oscarm3y3r

My vet recommended farmers dog. I spent a bunch of money on it and my dog wouldn’t eat it. The food was really slimy, it made feeding really messy. We switched to wet Cesar’s for her lunch meal and she’s never been happier. Dry kibble for breakfast and dinner. In 12 years, this is the fastest she’s eaten her meals. She looks forward to meals now.

critterwalk

Cesar’s is not WSAVA compliant.

starlizzle

my vet recommended ollie so i’m trying that now. i think it’s been the most convenient because they package for your dogs needs per day. takes the guess work out. i’ve also done nomnom with a dog in the past, he did well on it i am currently moving off of fresh pet vital beef & bison because the high protein was giving them constipation but they loved it. also it’s hard to measure and cut and not get plastic from the wrapping mixed in

Complimentbinary

It’s weird to hear of a vet who would recommend something like Ollie but 🤷🏻‍♀️

starlizzle

okay?

critterwalk

Ollie is not WSAVA compliant or recommended.

starlizzle

OP literally asked and my vet recommended it. dunno what to tell you

critterwalk

Yikes. I would switch to a WSAVA compliant brand before you do more harm.

wildflower-246

I thought it was okay (but $$$). We always supplemented dry food with it because we have a growing young GSD…. until one time it came thawed out completely and didn’t follow the directions and fed it to my dog. He got food poisoning. Poor boy, my fault too and I regret it but made me switch to dry dogfood from my local pet store. No issues since.

Competitive_Camel460

I loved spot and tango but found every month the food was inconsistent. Either too big or too small from the last batch. My dog loved it so much at first but eventually lost interest in it. We switched to open farm pet for their freeze dried kibble.

neonn_piee

JustFoodForDogs is a really healthy and awesome brand of fresh food. My dog’s been on it for years and his digestive has been good and his farts don’t stink as bad anymore. He eats the turkey and wheat macaroni one but they have a bunch of other flavors.

Ericinmobile24

So far, happy with Ollie more than farmers dog. Just make sure to ‘recycle’ email addresses for that 60% off. I refuse to pay full price for that

critterwalk

This is not WSAVA compliant and you’re likely doing more harm than good.
