Your manager is a wacko and you need to stand up to them and look for a better job in the meantime.

Select_Camel_4194

What state is this? How long is your shift? Check your states labor laws. Talk to an employment attorney. I'd say let it go on for a while. Document absolutely everything, then turn your attorney loose one em...that's me ...that's šŸ’Æ how I would handle the situation.

Salty_Possibility917

This. That's not even legal in most states op. Most states it's a minimum 15 minutes break for every so many hours you work.Ā  Your managers on a power trip.

ADeadlyFerret

You'll be surprised. A lot of states have no laws regarding breaks.

Select_Camel_4194

If OP and his/her coworkers play this right, they're going get paid.

[deleted]

It's not the breaks you can get them on. You're not supposed to use the security cameras beyond a certain extent. Ensuring employee performance is acceptable but stalking them as they may be doing things like go to the bathroom is not. I had a VP level at a household firm try and get on her little crew for going to the bathrooms too much. She made mention of potentially timing some people and how that's not healthy. I wasn't involved but I made sure to mention to her over dinner that she'd be lucky if a lawsuit didn't end up on her table that next day. Those employees should sued the shit out of her.

OSRS_Rising

Idk I live in a blue-ish purple state and we have no laws regarding breaks.

Select_Camel_4194

Hell, I live in a flaming red state, any employee that works 6 hours has to have a 30 minute break.

Vast-Boysenberry6527

And if u work 5 or more hours u have to have a break

SmoothScallion43

Typically breaks are not required by laws because they are on the clock and jobs will even state that you may not get an on the clock break on any given shift. Also if you do get a break they can make it however long or short they want and they can cut it short if you are needed to work. Off the clock lunch breaks are a different story. Some states have laws for them some donā€™t. But no matter the states laws if you are clocked out for a break they are required to allow you to take the full amount of time

AcademicChicken8334

Not if you're in California. Here, an uninterrupted 30-minute break is required if you're working more than 5 hours in a day. And one 10-minute break for each 4 hours. If you work 12 hours, you're supposed to get an additional 30-minute break. Not that any of this is ever observed or enforced, but it's the law.

Kayraan93

Sounds like a piece of shit manager. Seek a better job immediately lol

SMGentlexFist

Your Manager is definitely doing illegal things

Indybo1

DG policy is 30 minute unpaid break for a 6 hour shift, or an hour for an 8 hour shift. if you are not being allowed to take these by your SM, you need to talk to your DM

Zomula

DM won't care in most cases. DG policy even states that that is policy "unless otherwise stated by state law". That means that if the state law says no break needed then they won't do anything if the store manager says no break. I know because I tried to complain and got told that there was nothing they could do.

Indybo1

the Ā "unless otherwise stated by state law" means they will extend the times or pay when required to by law. requiring less is directly against company policy, not to mention goes against the payroll DG is oh so greedy about.

Totally_Human001

Tell the manager they need to log how many times they fist their own ass.

NoHomePlanet

Tell whatever dork that came up with that policy they're committing time theft from the company by intentionally slowing down their own productivity spending time looking at cameras for people standing still and unecessary write ups.

Icy_Spot9941

Sounds like Store Manger is on a power trip... sounds like you're going to be looking for a better job... anything is better than the dollar general.

daddybearmissouri

Get out of there. DG is the worst employer in America for a reason.Ā  Be sure as you leave to tell them to stick their book up their...

Chevy_Mustang

Look for another job. The second you have a start date request more hours, then no call no show til they get the point. SM is the only one REQUIRED to cover it.

Holdmywhiskeyhun

HR and the department of labor would fucking love this.

United_Caregiver7046

DG workin yā€™all boys like some plantation slaves bruh. Massa DG says jump and you boys say how high Massa? šŸ˜³

OGFSweet

Iā€™ve told my boss since day 1 if upper management ever says some ridiculous nonsense I have no problem tellin them to ā€œstick itā€ ā€œget bentā€ or ā€œIā€™m not paid anywhere close to enough for this shitā€ I told my boss, whoā€™s a damn good one very fair ā€œdonā€™t let the DM walk all over you and that I can get another job very quickly and have no problem telling them how it isā€ For real they put all this shit on stores but they do bare minimum to help them out. Or they gotta put in requests that get debated on for months to solve issues. My store is lucky that our carts keep getting stolen so we have piles on our carts. Not even joking if we didnā€™t have poles our carts would be all gone in a few days. If they tell me I gotta log my smoke break Iā€™ll straight tell my DM Iā€™ll see ya later. My boss wonā€™t let me go cause single handedly I can move freight, I have superior customer service and generally a great employee. When you mess with my break or tell me some nonsense like self check out is gonna be the new main register Iā€™m gonna tell you how stupid that is and request a raise. Needless to say we still have our main register and just shut down self check out.

CeriPie

Most states don't have laws regarding breaks, but that is absolutely 100% against company policy. Contact your DM and tell them the situation, then file a complaint with HR. If your DM doesn't follow through, contact your RM.

Logical-Wasabi7402

Check your employee handbook. If that goes against company policy, report her higher up the chain.

Dextre_Official

Lunch Break/Meal break/Rest Break SOP was just updated not too long ago. It states if you work 6 hours you get a 30 minute unpaid meal break, with two PAID 15 minute breaks. If your manager tried report it to HR if you get fired call your department of Labor and make some money.

ThatGuyGetsIt

Quit. Find a better job.

Abject_Jump9617

That is pretty bold of them. Are people clamoring for minimum wage jobs at the dollar general so much that they feel comfortable alienating the people that are willing to work there over petty BS??

Altruistic-Cap8524

Maybe you make a call to your states department of labor and maybe an investigation gets launched

sorryiateyoursocks

sounds to me like your manager is up to no good

TypicalPicture6800

Are we supposed to be getting breaks other than the unpaid lunch?

Noisywheel083

Ummm... it should be 30min break no matter what. I was a lsa and it was 30 minutes every shift for everyone as long as you weren't there under 4 hours.

justwannafallinlove

Let me guess, he's always out back smoking cigarettes though?

Xenomorph-l

My manager wants me to log every time I turn the key.. wtf

NoNewspaper2636

SOP says your allowed two 15 minute breaks (paid) plus your 30 minute unpaid break. That's for a full 8 hour shift though

Solemates69

Do yourself a favor and walk out now. This is exactly why DG needs to Unionize.

Low_Maintenance_6984

Wait yall get breaks?
