PM_me_your_whatevah

Fuck yes it is. My boys at id never made a bad game. Seriously. At the time it came out… it was frustrating for me personally. It took a beast of a pc to run it. The only real complaint beyond that was the flashlight mechanic. In retrospect you can see what they were going for but… I dunno. They ended up changing that eventually and I think the game is better for it.

Mastojira420

I would love to hear your opinions about Rage. Not that I dislike it, I haven't played it since I was a teenager when it released. It's seemingly the black sheep of 'Doom and beyond' id.

TheRealHFC

It's definitely more bad than good. When it was recent, I thought the gunplay was great, but everything else was incredibly janky and felt like an afterthought. The gunplay hasn't aged well either. I would just call it more of a failed experiment than anything else

NovaPrime2285

Nah RAGE 1 was fantastic, let down of an ending for sure, but RAGE 2 failed to truly capitalize on what 1 set as a foundation.

Inside-Joke7365

I loved it but it's unfair for rage 2 because when you compare them the first one was so much better and I'd prefer to make them 2 separate things because of how different they are

NovaPrime2285

Id never made a bad game? RAGE 2 would like to have a word with you.

ForgeDruid

That was developed by Avalanche I believe. ID helped a bit with combat but they weren't the main developer. Honestly the combat was actually good so even in that respect ID still did good.

Internal_Cesspool

Yes, it’s my personal favorite.

Yes it’s an excellent game and we’ll worth your time. It remains one of my favorite doom games

CypherHound

Yes.

abzinth91

Yes It had one of the best graphics at the time of its release It's slower paced than the first two Doom games It's a really good shooter, but doesn't really fit into the other Doom games

omegaturtle

There are very few scenarios in Doom and Doom2 that encourage fast paced game play. The idea of Doom being fast paced comes from the multi-player. The fast-paced gameplay in the new Dooms feel more inspired by Quake.

aetherchicken

I suppose that is true about doom 1 and 2, but plutonia and most community wads (pretty much everything in this years cacowards that just came out too) are often very very fast paced, at least on par with the new doom games imo.

Lopez-AL

Yes, specifically the original versions featuring the handheld flashlight mechanic! ;)

nurabsal92

Its Excellent, not good.

FriendlyWiking

I dont like it. Im a fan of fast and precise movement shooters, not a horror fan.

stopmotionskeleton

It’s awesome.

Zzsark_Stormbeard

Si.

BanDit49_X

One of the best games. Anyone should experience it at least once imo.

--InZane--

Yes it's in my top 3. It actually was my first doom game, my introduction to the series and made me a sucker for boomer shooters (after playing og Doom)

RobBlackblade

Yes, anyone who says it's not is just on the hate bandwagon.

Foil-Kiki-Jiki

Yes. I just played it the other day for the first time in years. I’ll be returning to finish the campaign.

Danioner

Mmm.... yes.

reddithasweridnames

Yes! (If you like horror survival games there’s a similar vibe mixed with the doom sauce)

Sandman705

It’s ok…. Good for a play through and not much else.

Idontmatter69420

Yes

ShadixThePrecursor6

Its decent, IT doesnt feel like a Doom game, but its enjoyable

Struukduuker

Yes.

Billyxmac

Yes it's good, just feels different from typical Doom

MkemCZ

Yes. It's a survival horror FPS with story-telling through audio logs, emails and environment.

dallasmcdicken

This game has that early 2000’s game design charm, too. The first thing that comes to mind when I’m listening to those audio logs

SympathyBeneficial65

Out of all of em its my least favorite its more of a horror game than a fast paced doom game but it's atleast worth 1 playthru

mcdeathmaster

Honestly my favorite from the series I always find myself going back to it to play again every few months. Love the atmosphere and enemy design of the game.

sidprague

yes, but don´t be a pussy and play Doom 3 original, not BFG

Yeetaclus

For console players like me, there is no choice. We can only play BFG.

motherhub

can I get an amen?

Odd_Radio9225

Yes.

Rel_Tan_Kier

Patient shooter, with dark atmosphere. Slow a bit but for someone is even more interesting. Classical horror with doom references but even close in gameplay to other doom games.

Johncurtisreeve

Yes

smokeHun

It isnt doom 3 It is doom 64² But yeah it is good

Leonyliz

Yes but don’t expect it to be as fast as classic doom or as quake-ish as the modern games

Familiar-Wrangler-73

I think a lot of people were thrown off by it when it was released because it wasn’t what they were expecting. It’s a good game but not a doom game.

Rel_Tan_Kier

Patient shooter, with dark atmosphere. Slow a bit but for someone is even more interesting. Classical horror with doom references but even close in gameplay to other doom games.

ababwa35353535353553

No, that doesn’t work like doom, and that doesn’t work like survival horror, “that doesn’t just work”

TwTvLaatiMafia

It used to be. It just doesn't hold up at all compared to Doom 1,2 and 64. As the game isn't really scary anymore, you end up with a boring Doom with worse gunplay than 2016 or Eternal.

Anonymodestmouse

It's a bit slow and boring in my opinion. Gunplay is weaker than any of the other games too. I don't really like it personally. Felt like a chore to get through.

Spore-Gasm

Yes, it’s a good game No, it’s not a good DOOM game

nbk935

Its way more like classic doom than 2016 or eternal. It just had a different atmosphere music and tone Like doom 64 and Doom PS1. it wasn't a superhero fantasy like 2016 and eternal and i like them both but that's disingenuous.

Spore-Gasm

It’s nothing like classic DOOM

nbk935

How not? its way more comparable than doom 2016 is and eternal

Spore-Gasm

The pacing and tone are very different. There’s no swarms of enemies in large open areas like with classic versions or the reboots. It feels more like a horror game than a boomer shooter.

nbk935

the tone and pacing is very similar to doom PS1 and Doom 64. maybe no swarms of enemies but its not a super hero fantasy

DOOManiac

No

Tough_Clock_6135

Upvoted for truth.

Farren246

Objectively no. It has its moments, but wears out its welcome and lingers too long on mechanics like jump scares that become predictable. (I wonder what will happen when I step on yet another pentagram in the middle of a locked room?) Rather than playing it, try this instead: https://www.moddb.com/mods/runners-doom-3 Or wait for an RTX remix version.

vuzz33

I would say the biggest flaw Doom 3 has is how it aged not so well compared to its predecessors. As you said too much cheap jumpscare, Betruger being a big old cliche villain with his evil laught and some silly animations like how the imp walk. But saying it's an objectively bad game because of that is stupid. Its visual were stunning when it was released and even now it still has a awesome ambiance. Some of the design of the weapons/monsters are considered to be the best of the serie and the combat are still very fun even if different from the others Doom games.

Farren246

I'll give it all of those good points, and I'm a guy who bought the expansion then replaced my physical preorder copy with the BFG edition on Steam. But none of your points make it a good game. It was critically panned for good reason.

vuzz33

Let's resume Doom 3. Great graphism, great animation, great lighting, great soundtrack, great atmosphere, great design, extended bestiary and arsenal for an overall solid gameplay, while having a rich lore for a doom game. Consequently Doom 3 is a great game and the negative points you mentionned are just minor and not enough to qualify it as bad. Also saying that Doom 3 was critically panned is (once again) false. It received a very favorable reception from both the press and the public (close to 90% positive score). In fact the only one that didn't like it were some Doom purists because it was different from it's processor and because the shotgun sucks.

Farren246

It was planned because it was repetitive to the point of boring the player.

vuzz33

I repeat the game was acclaimed by the majority. I'm not inventing stuff, just look at the score it got. As for the repetitivity, it does get a bit tedious at the delta lab imo. But the hell section coming just after largely make up for it. And you could say the same for Doom 2016 last levels.

ARCHFIEND_1

nah, its like a cop out of a horror title and it has the most boring opening imaginable, if you want doom in its full glory go eternal or 64

TheRealHFC

I'm so glad people are finally able to appreciate 64. Those remasters did it the justice it deserved. It's like the best parts of Quake 1 mashed into the Doom formula with a little more to offer on its own, not to mention the great soundtrack.

ARCHFIEND_1

it hits a decent spot between horror and power fantasy (until you get the second key for unmaker)

TheRealHFC

I finished it without guides a while back and only beat the Mother Demon with one key after a hundred attempts because it was a mutual kill that somehow counted. Only big downside is that boss fight, I couldn't find those secret levels at all. Otherwise, it was great.

Tough_Clock_6135

I wouldn't worry about your downvotes. Obviously just people in detail and want your opinion ratioed.  You're absolutely right in your assessment.

_gamadaya_

Fuck no.

Mastojira420

Yes, but you shouldn't worry about how good it is. The thing about Doom 3 is the shift for something more scary and "less action packed". Not to say there isn't great action in the game, there is, but it's not going through a map kicking arse and taking name like it was before.

Yeetaclus

Yes, but not in the way most people think. It has a slow paced style. It's not scary, per say, but it puts you on severe edge.

Flooredbythelord_

Depends. You like killing demons? Then yes. Are you a level one advocate? Then no.

andrenyheim

Yes and yes

dallasmcdicken

Highly recommend that anyone who is a fan of Doom to go play Doom 3 at least once.

NovaPrime2285

DOOM 3 is fantastic. Resurrection of Evil on the other hand… 😖 (🤔 or was it The Lost Mission that im thinking of…)

vuzz33

In resurrection of evil you get the super shotgun and the gravity gun and you fight Betruger in his dragon form. The lost mission is way shorter and the final boss is similar to the one guarding the soul cube in the base game.

Inside-Joke7365

I didn't really like it that much

N7LP400

The OG one? Not really The BFG Edition? Yes

[deleted]

Yes it’s good (not the bfg edition)

Beneficial-Lab-6939

could be better. not great but not bad. the models for the demons are......questionable. The story is relatively the same as other doom games. Most of the weapons are absolute garbage and impossible to use.

REBORNED1

Wdym with models for demons?the revenant is trash i know, but the others are great, and Doom 3 has the most intimidating and good looking hell knights and barons of hell, about the weapons, aside from the shotgun is just skill issue.

Beneficial-Lab-6939

yeah the revenant is pretty bad. I do like the lost souls though. With the spine still attached. Also some weapons are pretty good, but when i think doom, i think shotguns. It was just dissapointing for me cuz i mainly only use shotguns

REBORNED1

Normal shotgun was a melee weapon, super shotgun was the most overpower and disgusting thing i've ever seen, that thing was raw power

memphis_dude

It's especially good in VR. There are a few great VR mod options to choose from.

Raffaello86

It's ok, even though I feel it didn't age very well, compared to the others. Quake 4 did a lot better, in comparison.

Tough_Clock_6135

No.  It's a slow paced, repetitive shooter. The guns feel weak AF compared to other games. Even the BFG, which is the weakest version of the gun. The lore is really weak. The level designs eventually wear on you and come across as trite. The last boss was absolutely disappointing.  The only thing Doom 3 had going for it were the lighting effects. That's literally it.  Whatever though. It has it's fan base as all things do. But most of the stuff said about in defending it as a great game are often bullshit reasons reflecting that people just don't pay attention and end up praising things that weren't even in the game. Or remembering things wrong that, again, weren't in the game. I played and beat it on hard and it felt absolutely fucking boring.
