Last time when I used something that was not GZDoom was forteen years ago. So, I already had picked one source port for the rest of my life and never played any other.
I'm pretty sure it's been GZDoom for single player, Zandronum for multiplayer for forever now. Any other source port is only for extremely specific things.
dsda-doom. It's properly vanilla compatible, or Boom, or MBF, and doesn't make silly changes to the game that are on by default. I can easily live without anything GZDoom has to offer.
he's said dosbox so normally i would think doom.exe and not something else in this context. someone genuinely thought dosbox doom are source port and disliked my previous comment
Rewind is a godsend for my forgetful ass not saving before big fights, per-WAD saves instead of just having a big block of saves that might not even be on the right mapset, the level table allows you to instantly warp to any level without idclev and shows you a load of really nice stats that make it easy to tell which maps you haven't uv-maxed yet (and sates the nerd side of my brain), and I can't think of any sourceport that isn't a direct dsda fork that has any of the above.
I prefer PrBoom+ over other source ports. But if I had to pick one for the rest of my life it would have to be GZdoom since it has a wider mod compatibility, therefore I can play a wider array of different mods.
Gzdoom is so beyond pretty much any and all of its competition that it can hardly even be described as a competition really. It is so versatile, so easily accessible, you don't have to jump through hoops or unweildy outdated UI, it has so many options to tweak your experience however you want it and it's such a great tool for modmakers that you can basically make a game on it that barely even resembles doom likes Selaco, Vomitoreum, Ashes Afterglow, Blade Of Agony etc.
Gzdoom is to Doom what Eduke is to Duke Nukem 3D
Gzdoom for compatibility.
Dsda-doom when I have to use "rewind".
Man I really miss "rewind" in gzdoom. Is there any script for rewind in gzdoom?
Edit1: spelling
GZDoom is so customizable, I can literally emulate all the other source ports play styles. Right down to the resolution, frame rate, and compatibility. I just wish we could use GZDoom for online play the way we use Zandronum.
there’s alot of fantastic mods that aren’t brutal doom
also how does the gameplay differ when you turn on strict compatibility mode and software rendered
gzdoom. if you want to play it vanilla there’s ways to get it pretty close. but the sheer amount of mods it can load means you’ll have basically endless hours of content
GZD. Even if you're a classic purist there's just too much must play community content that needs it to pass it up, and it can still be made quite true to OG if you know what settings to tweak.
It would be GZDoom for me since it has the most features, but the multiplayer is so atrocious that it barely works even while playing on the same network; I'm talking desync issues like you've never seen before.
So since I play Doom mainly for coop, I gotta give it to Zandronum.
GZDoom. If it weren’t for that, my playtime on the original DOOM games would be limited. I’m working my way through MaxDOOM and I couldn’t imagine playing them on Vanilla or Chocolate.
In before I use Project Brutality or Brutal DOOM because I don’t. I enjoy the dynamic lighting, mouse look, and a custom GOD mode that turns the screen a golden orange instead of black and white.
GZDoom, if I need vanilla, I can use the Vanilla Essence mod. Otherwise, too many awesome mods require GZDoom to run, and I'd render most of my Doom mod library unplayable without it.
DSDA or ZDoom. GZDoom exists souly for mods and a gigantic amount of them are either garbage, or just a timed fun. I'd rather would be able to launch some good slaughtermaps and be able to record legitimate demos.
And moat of the good maps you can play on ZDoom, so you really didn't missing anything there.
GZDoom no questions. The sheer amount of moddabilty is just too crazy. I'll be honest, I wish it had Zandronum multiplayer capabilities (it does have some to an extent but still really meh) but that can be fixed later down the road. Adding all mod compatibility back to Zandronum on the other end is a huge amount of work.
GZ beats pretty much everything in this regard. Theres surprisingly little you can’t do with it with some creativity, at least going off what I’ve seen.
DSDA would be my choice because I mostly speedrun and I like the features it has. I rarely play the massive overhaul mods but I occasionally dabble. My gaming life wouldn't change much if I didn't have access to it.
All these gzdoom comments, clearly they have never had a potato PC.
prboom for me, it works with linux, and macOS and even runs on my potato. That and it’s what I prefer to use, it’s familiar, and good.
Can be any port of prboom, prboom plus is my goto these days, so I could live with that.
No love for VKDoom? It's basically GZDoom running on Vulkan and without the stupid default settings. For me it has performed better and without hiccups.
DSDA-Doom for me because it’s a proper port faithful to the original engine and can run pretty much all Vanilla, Boom, MBF and MBF21 compatible wads. It has some really nice QoL features as well that no other source ports has.
Come on bro, obviously, GZdoom is the most powerful and predominant source port, although they release a lot of updates and the one you already downloaded is now obsolete, although zandronum is an option too
Last time when I used something that was not GZDoom was forteen years ago. So, I already had picked one source port for the rest of my life and never played any other.

Just for the Mod compatibility and engine wizardry alone I’ll always pick GZDoom…
GZDoom
gzdoom
GZDoom. Only really fucked around with Zandronum and Chocolate, never stuck with them.
And Zandronum is pretty much just multi-player gzdoom anyways
gzdoom needs to jump on multiplayer and complete it's conquest
I'm pretty sure it's been GZDoom for single player, Zandronum for multiplayer for forever now. Any other source port is only for extremely specific things.
DSDA, and then I'll use the loophole that GZoom is it's own engine now and UDMF barely resembles the 1993 code
dsda-doom. It's properly vanilla compatible, or Boom, or MBF, and doesn't make silly changes to the game that are on by default. I can easily live without anything GZDoom has to offer.
Gz is my long time choice!
DOSBox
Legend
"source port"
There is a DOS port of ZDoom floating around
he's said dosbox so normally i would think doom.exe and not something else in this context. someone genuinely thought dosbox doom are source port and disliked my previous comment
dsda-doom. Moddable to high hell yet still classic-faithful, and has quality of life features no other source port does.
Could you elaborate on thos QoLs?
Rewind is a godsend for my forgetful ass not saving before big fights, per-WAD saves instead of just having a big block of saves that might not even be on the right mapset, the level table allows you to instantly warp to any level without idclev and shows you a load of really nice stats that make it easy to tell which maps you haven't uv-maxed yet (and sates the nerd side of my brain), and I can't think of any sourceport that isn't a direct dsda fork that has any of the above.
DSDA and Doom retro probably.
GZdoom without a shadow of a doubt
zandro, my beloved...😊🥰
I prefer PrBoom+ over other source ports. But if I had to pick one for the rest of my life it would have to be GZdoom since it has a wider mod compatibility, therefore I can play a wider array of different mods.
Dm me

nowadays i would like to use Raze for all the other FPS like duke, blood, shadow warrior or even rednecks (and it uses gzdoom as back end)
Gzdoom for compatibility. Dsda-doom when I have to use "rewind". Man I really miss "rewind" in gzdoom. Is there any script for rewind in gzdoom? Edit1: spelling
GZDoom. The amount of stuff I can do and play with it alone is insane.
Where's my nugget Doom?
probably GZdoom since that's where most slightly more complex WADs/pk3 files are supported
LZDoom.
GZDoom is so customizable, I can literally emulate all the other source ports play styles. Right down to the resolution, frame rate, and compatibility. I just wish we could use GZDoom for online play the way we use Zandronum.
Prboom, anyone who says GZdoom is a zoomer
Original *Doom* executable. Anyone who says PrBoom is a millennial.
MSDOS represent.
if you don’t choose gzdoom you are denying yourself ALOT of mod capabilities just for a more faithful doom
I'm not about to play brutal doom (I actually have taste) I just want to play wads in an actually accurate way
I prefer the modding capability of GZDoom and all the shenanigans that can bring, plus I like the more accurate calculations over the faithful ones
Nah we play project brutality Or Russian Overkill
there’s alot of fantastic mods that aren’t brutal doom also how does the gameplay differ when you turn on strict compatibility mode and software rendered
GZDoom and it isn't even a competition.
True
I only use gzdoom so no worries
GZDoom
gzdoom
gzdoom. if you want to play it vanilla there’s ways to get it pretty close. but the sheer amount of mods it can load means you’ll have basically endless hours of content
GZ DooM as that would include Selaco and Brutal Fate when it drops plus DooM mod madness!
Gzdoom for sure
Is there a major difference between them? I’ve only used GZdoom for a bit.
GZDoom is very mod friendly, but it's poorly optimised and can't perfectly emulate Vanilla.
Thank you :D
GZDoom. The possibilities are endless
i choose gzdoom bc myhouse.wad
Excellent reason
Like the wind, you cane running...
GZD. Even if you're a classic purist there's just too much must play community content that needs it to pass it up, and it can still be made quite true to OG if you know what settings to tweak.
GZDoom. Wish it was compitable with Heartland tho
GZDoom is the one I use.
It would be GZDoom for me since it has the most features, but the multiplayer is so atrocious that it barely works even while playing on the same network; I'm talking desync issues like you've never seen before. So since I play Doom mainly for coop, I gotta give it to Zandronum.
Gzdoom. Easy to set up and causes minimal problems.
gzdoom just for moddding
My go-to has long been GZDoom. I want to try Doom Retro tho, I didn't know it was a thing before this post
GZDoom, most of the mods I like are playable with this source port.
I only played with gz doom so I can't express my opinion
gzdoom can do everything. So gzdoom. For vanilla wads I still think prboom+ is vastly better.
Gzdoom is the only real option
Gzdoom
GZDoom
gzdoom
i cant run GZDooM, is LZDooM fine?
GZDoom too flexible to abandon forever
GZdoom
Ok google sucks, what is GZDOOM?
Source port, Basically rewrites the game engine to make it better.
Whatre the differences? I only know gz
OMG I can swipe. GzDoom
I'll use DOS if I want vanilla, GZDoom is my pick here
Gzdoom
Gzdoom
GZDoom, if I need vanilla, I can use the Vanilla Essence mod. Otherwise, too many awesome mods require GZDoom to run, and I'd render most of my Doom mod library unplayable without it.
GZDoom. Despite not being vanilla compatible, you truly get the most out of GZDoom in terms of compatible content.
GZDoom for sure it’s just the easiest and best one for me
There's only one right answer to this, HELLO??? GZDOOM is more compatible then literally any other source port to mods
Obviously GZdoom because sometimes i want special mods that works best with GZdoom

GZDoom.
GZDoom
GZ beats pretty much everything in this regard. Theres surprisingly little you can’t do with it with some creativity, at least going off what I’ve seen.
GZ: works fine on Mac
Gzdoom
GZDoom. Played a wide amount of sourceports over the years and GZDoom is the one I prefer most. It's also the first one I recommend to people.
Linuxdoom
GZDOOM FOR THE WIN!!!
i’ve only ever used gzdoom and zandronum lmfao
GZDoom
GZDoom all the way for me. It's modding scene is spectacular.
Gzdoom
GZ DOOM
GZDoom
GZdoom.
GZDoom hands down
GZ doom
GZDoom, its so customisable
GZDoom definitely (because it’s the only one i know how to use)
Gz because it runs on linux
G fucking Z fucking Doom
GZDoom
GZDoom for the same reason as everyone else
Nothing beats GZDoom.
Gzdoom
GZDoom
idk if all those other ones have a Debian version... and I like my 3D floors to much :p
I couldn't, I like too many mods to eliminate like 70% playability from one of my favorite games permanently
gz and you know why
Sometimes I’ll play chocolate if I want the authentic DOS experience, but otherwise, GZ is my go to
Like everyone else is saying, gz.
Marshmallow Doom is my favorite
difficult choice between gzdoom and dsda-doom
DSDA would be my choice because I mostly speedrun and I like the features it has. I rarely play the massive overhaul mods but I occasionally dabble. My gaming life wouldn't change much if I didn't have access to it.
Chocolate Doom.
PrBoom Plus? Is that the path tracing renderer?
Skulltag honestly
As much as I love chocolate doom for its basically vanilla game play gz has all the mods
I use DSDA Doom because I'm a hateful elitist but I also like some quality of life.
Crispy. Love that shit because I like originality.
PrBoom+. I've been using it for years now and gzdoom just doesn't have the same feel. It's hard to go back to it these days
I'm in way too deep at this point with how many mod setups I have. I am forever tied to GZDoom.
Doom RPG 1/2 :)
LZDoom
LZDoom because I play on a 2011 laptop with Intel HD 3000 on it, can't handle the newer OpenGL.
Skulltag
Prboom+ is so underrated guys. Its the good mix for wad comp and the deh are cool. Can play on everything.
Since I knew about others for the first, I pick Gzdoom
No love for VKDoom? It's basically GZDoom running on Vulkan and without the stupid default settings. For me it has performed better and without hiccups.
the really terribly optimized source port called zandronum
GZdoom
For base DOOM experience Chocolate Doom, I personally don't really mod games that much but I honestly think GHZ is better overall
Modding, GZDoom. Pure vanilla, Boom
dsda
GZDoom, LZDoom, ZDoom or Zandronum
GZDOOM is the only source port I use and I'm happy
DSDA-Doom for me because it’s a proper port faithful to the original engine and can run pretty much all Vanilla, Boom, MBF and MBF21 compatible wads. It has some really nice QoL features as well that no other source ports has.
Gzdoom
GZDoom, I like mods.
GZDoom
GZDoom. My beloved...
PS1 Doom.
You can have your own takes but I would consider that a port and not a source port.
Come on bro, obviously, GZdoom is the most powerful and predominant source port, although they release a lot of updates and the one you already downloaded is now obsolete, although zandronum is an option too
Unity cause I'm a sociopath
You monster
GZDoom. It’s got Brutal Doom: Hell on Earth, and that’s all I need.
GZ + the Brutal mod has been my ideal experience for a while. Zan still sees a lot of use within the multiplayer community.
If it's about playing Brutal Doom and forks, GZDoom. Otherwise, DOSBox :)
I play Doom on console, so this question is invalid. But I'd give GZDoom a shot.
