Serious answer: as a software engineer my understanding is that WHO gets MVP/a mention is based on some hidden numerical score calculated based on some factors (eg kda, hero damage, tower damage, healing, maybe more).
Then once the top 3 are decided, some other system picks specific shout outs for all 3. Now I don't have any good theories for how this system works, but somehow WD's highest ranked shout out was 0 kills. But I'm pretty confident the 0 kills is not why he got the mention, that's caused by having a high MVP score.

In the end, Luna got the MVP after managing an 8-kill streak after feeding 7 times and ending up with 8-7-1 score. Oh, she also got 1 Lunar Beam kill and 1 Eclipse kill in there as a reason for MVP. Meanwhile I, who was top net worth and went 4-2-17 on the offlane, didn't even get a mention.
Sometimes I think they "fixed" the MVP issue (used to be pretty much only cores could ever get it) by just randomly highlighting supports that existed in the game.
And a shocking amount of the time it actually is Witch Doctor who just gets MVP, even if he didn't do anything. Yes, I know there are valid cases, where some 5 WD outplays people with switcharoo and then gets to channel a full ult for huge dmg and impact, but oftentimes he just gets it by default.
Maybe the basic formula for sup MVP consideration is something like "stunned x heroes", "healed y heroes", "dealt z dmg" and "placed a ward". So if he puts down a sentry he auto-checks every other box.
If you disconnect from the game, it will show 0 kills as your mentionable stat (if you had done any mentionable stat, that is)
I see it quite often, as Im below 9k behavior score and here theres people quitting in 2 out of every 3 games
I think Witch Doctor Is bugged because he always ends up on the MVP screen no matter how bad he is. I always assumed it was because of his stun bouncing back and forth and the game loves to give credit to stuns for supports
Anything that bounces gets mentions - that's why you basically ALWAYS have lich and WD in the mentions - not sure about Hoodwink, but the former two are always there. it's been know ever since they introduced that MVP feature

My theory has always been that the system determines HM/MVP with a weight of how long you've gone without getting one. It acts as a feel good system to keep people playing without it having any tangible reward attached.
Because mvp score is calculated from a bunch of parameters that try to estimate total impact. Its not related to the medals it gives. WD probably got a lot of healing, stuns, assists, etc.
People need to stop posting these. It's some AI-determined crap, so what? Even if the enemy team does 0 damage to any building or hero, they will still get an honorable mention alongside someone from your team. Whatever medal they get is seemingly picked at random. Maybe he healed a lot in this case. Who knows. Who cares?
It's not an AI, but some form of fantasy points I guess. And yeah, there are always one hero from loser team even if it was 30-0 game. Very stupid but seems motivating for 1k bear lovers :D
