Using "they" isn't even new. It's literally correct grammar lmao

CandyCrazy2000

Fun fact, singular "they" is older than singular "you"

Aron-Jonasson

Roses are red, violets are blue Singular "they", predates singular "you". Use this next time someone questions the use of singular they

Cytrynaball

Yea it's always been part of the glossary

ShiroGaneOsu

Yet people still act like it's inconceivable to use 'they' as a singular noun.

Inspector_Spacetime-

You use they in a sentence all the time when a persons gender is unknown. But when it’s a persons preferred pronouns it’s a problem🤨 Make it make sense!

NotADamsel

It’s changing, apparently, because bigots are pointedly saying “they” instead of someone’s actual preferred pronouns and thus it’s starting to be seen as a sign of belligerence. Or something.

CandiceDikfitt

ah shit we turning they into a prejorative term now damn edit: they turning they into a pejorative term now

Federal_Heron_Addict

Binary trans people getting they/them'd while non-binary people getting he/she'd

Dankn3ss420

Don’t you mean they are turning it into a pejorative term?

princejoopie

Schrodinger's They/Them: a quantum state of both being unacceptable to use "they" as a singular person's pronoun when preferred AND being perfectly fine to use "they" for a binary trans person when they don't prefer it.

PlatinumAltaria

They is a viking neopronoun, and that’s based.

Person 1 said "my friend **is** coming", indicating one friend

The_Better_Paradox

Bad example, I recalled it from my memory but I remember seeing a factually correct example showing how it's confusing in certain cases, not all. Never said it was confusing in every case but you do you.

krumznko

Gender??? Cmon now 😭😭

oFIoofy

people act like saying 'they' for a singular person is an entirely new concept and is 'woke', as if they haven't been using it their whole lives?

Full-Nature-9787

The problem is that some people for some reason get offended when you call them a they, especially with the whole neopronouns thing

Right_Reflection3973

No the problem is people who go out of their way not to use specific pronouns after they’ve asked them to. Of course there’s going to be unhinged ppl who take it to far, but if we’re gonna keep using the few to justify how we act and treat the many then we all may as well just become assholes to one another cus the last person we interacted with was an asshole.

Full-Nature-9787

Fair point, especially those who do it on purpose to mock others, I don't stand for queerphobic people but also I don't stand for people who are super super entitled

Crimsoner

What I do for people that absolutely refuse to call me my preferred pronouns is give them the opposite of my pronouns so they end up using the right ones lol

Mr_Leo_DS

No, (gender) don't

ForgiveMeImBasic

It has nothing to do with neopronouns.

Full-Nature-9787

Some people don't like they/them and instead use neos so yes, it does

ForgiveMeImBasic

Yes but using they/them has nothing to do with neopronouns, most of the time it's just that they explicitly want to be called "he" or "she" It has nothing to do with that Xir/Xblem bullshit Source: I know because I'm very involved with the queer community and nobody who uses a neopronoun gets offended over getting they/them'd. It's explicitly the people who WANT he/him/she/her who don't want they/them. Nothing to do with neopronouns.

Full-Nature-9787

I'm also in the queer community since I myself use they/them and I am very involved in queer spaces, there I have seen multiple people say not to use they/them for those specific people, often using neos instead and I have seen people make yell-ish Tiktoks just for people using they/them

ForgiveMeImBasic

You are so full of shit. This is top tier /r/AsABlackMan material :/

Desert_Rain_Frog_

Happy cake day Unless your making fun of neo pronouns then you suck

(gender) got downvoted to hell. (gender) rlly said (gender). I hope (gender) gets better soon after getting downvoted to oblivion.

howelleili

(gender) is crazy

Isaac_Kurossaki

You should have put [insert pronoun here] instead.

TabthTheCat3778

I think that makes it funnier, it's not ill intentioned, it's a genuinely hilarious mistake

Organic_Shine_5361

Yeah it's just dumb. Just use they. It's literally a gender neutral term lmao

i feel like it makes a mockery of using neutral terms or being mindful of them because they’re taking it to the extreme completely ignoring the already in-use neutral word for people in our language.

I’m finna need you to change that flair to “Deserved”

cursetea

This is like when people say "folx" lmfao like uh that was already neutral

univrsal_maniac

i think thats just to be lazy and not spell out the whole word lol just a way to shorten it

SaraHTheCatt

that doesnt explain y'xll

FaeryLynne

Nah, It definitely started as a "gender neutral" thing, the X is what people use to make existing words gender neutral. like Mx instead of Mr or Mrs, or Latinx instead of Latino or Latina (though that last one is a weird fuckery since it's not really pronounceable in Spanish; people are now using Latine as the gender neutral word) It's not really shorter anyway, only by one letter. "Folks" vs "Folx"

Environmental-Owl445

i feel like that’s just for abbreviation purposes, like how people used to say thx

DeleriousBeanz

Well this is a new one! They just needed to use “They” or “Op” lmao

TheyAreJavu

Wait, I know how to make they change their minds: My pronouns are (gender)/(genders)

SadGhostGirlie

That guy treats people like algebra

2ndchancetodothis

.... no? not using a common word isn't ill-intentioned Lmao

SadGhostGirlie

It very clearly is mocking.

2ndchancetodothis

Can I ask how?

Intelligent-Chair385

(Gender) was just looking out not to accidentally midgender someone 😭😭

CandiceDikfitt

change to “deserved”

Multifruit256

is it though

CandiceDikfitt

yeah

Multifruit256

why

CandiceDikfitt

because there’s no point in saying (gender) it’s like still using “he/she.” there’s nothing wrong with “they.” if *they* edited the comment to be “they” then it wouldn’t be a problem.

2ndchancetodothis

losing over a hundred karma over that is undeserved tbh, maybe like 20 would be okay

Sweetiebomb_Gmz

You can’t lose 100 karma from one comment, it’s capped at -10 regardless of how many downvotes you get

2ndchancetodothis

oh, thanks for da fact

Duke825

Bro who tf cares about reddit karma

2ndchancetodothis

that's the whole point of this sub, is it not?

Multifruit256

maybe they just didn't know that??? I also didn't know you can use "they" like that before

CandiceDikfitt

yeah but editing they in is also an option

RetroOverload

I mean it's an attempt I guess??? I don't think it was ill intentioned

SadGhostGirlie

Oh it 100 percent was no one is that oblivious

JettsInDebt

That feels really presumptuous. My initial thought was perhaps they thought that "they" had become a gendered term due to enbies being a thing, and was trying not to assume that either. There's a lot of interpretations for a sentence that short, and if you're operating from the same knowledge base as the rest of us, you don't even have the additional context to infer their personality. And yeah, people *are* that oblivious.

Sugarfreak2

Clearly you’ve never worked in retail

c_ray25

I found it slightly funny

realhmmmm

idk hard to take intentions off that you could say they were trying to be shitty by specifically not using the word “they” or they were trying to be inclusive but their brain didn’t immediately jump to that

VodkerAndToast

Yeah because it’s willful ignorance trying to be edgy

JettsInDebt

I mean, it conveys their point, no? They might not be a native speaker, or maybe they are and even then it doesn't matter regardless because (gender) does the same thing as "they" just in a different, and less standard way. People are really out here getting mad that the word gender exists, huh?

kweezie

they didn’t even have to say they, OP was right there

RenkBruh

This is deserved. But WHAT IF the person wasn't a native English speaker and didn't know "they/them" could be used to refer to a single person?

SomeoneWithKeyboard

Not unthinkable. My language doesn't have the opportunity for a single person they. That would be 'it', which I guess, is not preferred. Leaned the whole they/them part in English only a little while ago because there was never a need before.

Myrddraal5856

Yeah, this is deserved.

Desert_Rain_Frog_

Wait I'm confused why is this offensive I was thinking it was like so you didn't misgender anyone (ik using they is fine if you don't have the pronouns but I was thinking this was smart bc like can't misgender either way)

anon12xyz

That’s what the word they is for

Desert_Rain_Frog_

I think both work

[deleted]

FandomsAreDragons

They/them can be used singular as well. “My friend and I went to the aquarium and they had a blast!!” It’s still just talking about the one friend but using they instead

bluepotatosack

No. It's been used as a singular pronoun for centuries. I don't understand what's confusing about it.

Bonnie_BS_Main

It's not even an english thing, even in my language, they can be used as a singular pronouns

TheFurryFighter

As far as English goes, we already have another official pronoun in both the singular and plural positions: you. Also, they(singular) traces it's origins back to 1375, so it's been around for ages Also also, there are newer pronouns being generated as alternatives to they(singular) such as: Ze/Zir/Zirs, Xe/Xir/Xirs, etc.

LanguageNerd54

Back to 1375….probably earlier. I don’t get why it’s so controversial. It’s not even just used for non-binary people.

Arcaydya

Yep. That's the line where I stop understanding. I'm all for using whatever pronoun you want, but what the fuck is with the z x shit? Are you zemu?

Cyan_Light

They're for people that don't identify with the "man/woman" gender binary but that still feel like they have a distinct identity somewhere on the vast spectrum of human traits. So instead of using they/them (which doesn't communicate any identity at all, as people in the thread already pointed out it's not even exclusive to non-binary people and is used for cis men and women literally all the time) they use some neopronouns which they think best communicate whatever that identity might be. To be honest I don't get it at all either, but I don't really have to get it to respect it. I don't get gender in general, I have absolutely no clue what a cis dude means when they say they feel "manly" while clearly referring to things other than their biological sex, but it's still easy to use he/him pronouns for that guy and validate whatever they're talking about. If it's all going to be made up nonsense then it just seems like we should extend that same courtesy to people that feel best when they get to make up new categories within the nonsense, where's the harm? More importantly I've also never encountered anyone out in reality that uses neopronouns, it's the most niche of niche language issues to worry about. There are countless cis people on the other hand that seem to get genuinely upset when misgendered, so trying to figure out if that's a long-haired man with a high voice or a lightly mustached woman with minimal curves has been much more stressful to navigate than trying to remember the use cases of frog/frogself pronouns.

Arcaydya

Huh. Good point. I'm my opinion, it just muddies the waters even more though. "Here's his water" "IM NOT A HE! IM A ZE/ZER!" Like that's just confusing as fuck. And with how sensitive an issue this is, helps no one. But yeah. I can respect it without understanding. I'm cis, so there's already a disconnect to begin with.

Cyan_Light

Sure, I just don't think that ever happens out in the world. Almost nobody uses neopronouns and the few that do generally seem to be aware that they're confusing and thus more understanding when people get things wrong.

Arcaydya

Hope that stays the case. I've seen too many videos of mtf people literally abusing wait staff at restaurants because they get the pronoun wrong. Recording themselves the whole time. It isn't right.

beomint

I mean sure, but for every 1 person angry about an honest mistake, there's thousands of trans people who just sit there and take it as they're aggressively misgendered or even physically abused or killed. It's not right either. I'm not saying that excuses bad behavior, it absolutely never will, but honestly 99.9% of trans people I've met would never ever become hostile towards someone over pronouns unless they were being repeatedly misgendered over and over despite numerous polite reminders. What you see on the internet is highly sensationalized and many things are outright staged for rage bait views nowadays. In the real world trans people are afraid to even use the bathroom in public. I'm sure lots of genuine videos exist too, but typically the camera only comes out after this has built up and you only see the ending. People always play dumb and say "they didn't know" in order to make the trans person feel like they didn't speak up well enough for themselves when in fact they've tried to politely ask to be respected several times before we see this major blowout. There's 2 sides to every story and we can't let a few bad apples continue fueling the hate that's getting trans people attacked and killed constantly for no good reason other than daring to ask to be respected. Trans women are commonly beaten for using public restrooms (regardless of which bathroom was chosen) and we're concerned about people being upset when someone refuses to give them the most basic of human respect. I think there's a lesser of 2 evils here, maybe.

MageOfFur

I don't think it has to be confusing. The conversation you've presented would probably go more like: "Here's his water." "I'm sorry, I prefer using ze/zer pronouns. I could explain how to use them, and I understand it could take time to adjust, but it would make me happy if you were to make the effort." I have friends who use more unusual pronouns like those, and trust me, they know that people will see those pronouns as strange. But it doesn't change that those are the pronouns that make them happy. If you ever encounter someone who uses 'strange' pronouns, then they've probably put a lot of trust in you by sharing a vulnerable piece of who they are. Just do your best to get them right, and soon it'd be as intuitive as anything else <:)

Arcaydya

Oh for sure. I'd never misgender people on purpose. It's unnecessary and rude. Sure I'd think it was strange, but it doesn't take away from my life at all

MageOfFur

That's refreshing to hear. I just wish more people could understand that sentiment. It's appalling how 'respect others' can be such a divisive statement these days :/

Arcaydya

Blame the current political climate. I don't really care much for Biden, but there's no denying this shit started to get bad with Trump inciting a bunch of people. We never recovered now we have shit like the debate. Our entire culture, at least here in America, is totally gone to shit. I'm sorry if people give you a hard time over something so trivial.

TheFurryFighter

Most people that act like that are assholes anyway. Usually when someone misgenders me, i respond more with «thanks, and btw, could u please use Ze/Zir for me». As a trans enby, i use Ze/Zir and i attribute it as being the non-binary analog of He/Him and She/Her. They/Them is used as a general case and includes men and women, while Ze/Zir doesn't usually include those two

Arcaydya

Hey, live your truth. I'm here for it. Honestly. The neopronoun thing just kinda lost me as a cis person. As long as you're respectful, I'll call you whatever you want.

GeneralSpecifics9925

Just ten days ago, in a comment that got over 120 downvotes, you commented using the word they to refer to individuals. You were talking about when people get to use the n-word, if you want a reminder. You're just here to stir up shit.

Savage_Nymph

Eh it's not like they're forcing other people to use (gender) I don't see the big deal but I noticed people on reddit vet upset about the mildest things

Porkandpopsicle

undeserved imo, they wrote the word 'gender' implying that oop isnt like transphobic or something and oops english was probably not that good

tancereczka_243

Why is everybody mad about this? I would probably do the same thing.

ForgiveMeImBasic

That makes you a moron, just use "they" you clown fiesta Why in the everloving fuck would you use (gender) That's just so dumb

sxinoxide59672

GODDAMMIT I DIDN'T KNOW THEY THEM WAS USED TO REFER TO ONE PERSON

MagnusLore

Because people in the comments are transphobic

MLG_GuineaPig

Who are they and why do they want to use them

holthebus

Idgi

bytelover83

I think this was just ignorance rather than malice. I don't get why they were downvoted

famslamjam

I remember being like 11 and using they to refer to people of unknown gender before I even understood the concept of gender. Why can’t we just be grammatically correct lmao

Agent_Peter

Bro 😭😭😭

Tornado3422

Yeah, he’s being petty lol, “they probably play bedrock on computer”

Mister_Normal42

You can also just drop the pronoun altogether and say "probably plays bedrock on computer" That way the pronoun is implied by context and doesn't need to be defined.

AppropriateBed6855

Dumb but doesn’t deserve that much downvotes

ForgiveMeImBasic

Yeah it does lol Nobody's that stupid, it's pretty obviously malice

poopoodaddydom

that makes me angry

Agent_Peter

“now, I’m REALLY mad!”

Gaxxag

I vote that instead of everyone choosing their pronouns, everyone just picks the pronouns of the people they're talking to. People not only get to identify themselves as whatever they want, and also get to identify everyone else as whatever they want. True freedom.

Agent_Peter

the fuck

PettyWhite81

Good for you. Keep pointing out how stupid they seem to most people.

Cowboy__Guy

Some people don’t Identify as “They”

Multifruit256

I'm sure this is not how it works

Cowboy__Guy

How exactly does it work if you’re so sure.

Multifruit256

"They" is used to refer to people whose gender is unknown at the time

Cowboy__Guy

It also refers to people who wish to not identify themselves with any gender. What also happens is people have some third party gender that they want to use so they get offended by the “they” pronoun. So it does work that way.

Multifruit256

So you can't use "they"?? Then what should you use?

Cowboy__Guy

Shit I don’t know you just ask whoever it is.

Multifruit256

Seriously??? Asking someone's gender just to mention them?

Cowboy__Guy

Yea. Apparently.

Multifruit256

just...use "they" saying "some people prefer not to be mentioned as "they"" is like saying "some people prefer not to be considered a human"

sxinoxide59672

i didn't know that tbh

Krackle_still_wins

This just lets you know right off the bat not to talk to this person.

ReginaFelangi987

Well you deserved it.

matiegaming

We used to have 2 genders, then you could become trans, and then people started making genders because they wanted to be unique. Gender and sex isnt even the same

Multifruit256

"And then" It was always like that?

JettsInDebt

Nah nah. It's like how back in my day, there were only right handers, and then one day all these left handers just popped up out of nowhere and said "I feel more comfortable using my left hand and I was just being constructed by my limited options given to me by society". Clearly it was actually the work of all those feminist/leftist/cultural Marxists who tricked all these right handers into thinking they were left handed! /j cus Poe's Law
