Personally, I stopped doing maintenance about 6 months in and I am still puzzled til this day why it took another year and a half, or even a bit longer, for them to "settle down". I thought two strands were supposed to mature around a year or so but my ass was in for double 😂

It's necessary since his freforms are strongly molded together, and i'm pretty sure che combined some of them using a crochet tool, which can easily pinch the hair each time it pulls through. It was a 6 hour session, so I can imagine it felt like it would never end.
This lady did an amazing job with his hair. When loca form a giant mass, or a few giant masses, it's officially a lock repair situation, not a routine one. For routine maintenance, I just will not tolerate a high level of pain because it's likely that the person in question just doesn't care enough about their work to make sure their client is comfortable. I made that mistake once and won't be rushing to find another loctician. There are people i've seen online who don't have their patients having flashbacks to their childhood of moms ripping hair out of their heads. And that's not just a loctician issue, it's a stylist issue in general when it comes to those servicing kinky/coily hair.
Your free forms could have also been saved. People think free form means neglect. You still have to separate them. But your hair looks nice now nonetheless.

Traditional Freeform means NO manipulation.
Semi Freeform allows the wearer to manipulate, separate and direct the locs in the manner to which the wearer wants the locs to lay. Normally no manipulation is done except to separate them for size and direction purposes.
