yes, i have it in my horror deck, because every horror has menace due to my commander \[\[captain n'gathrod\]\]
its fun running over someone with \[\[consuming abboration\[\[
Its not explicitly stated, but as he is based on Lovecraftian writing, and Cthulhu and Nyarlothotep and other creations of his are unpronouncable in human languages because they are beings of another plane of existence that the human mind is literally incapable of comprehending, it can be assumed the same rules apply to this good squid boi.
He is a character from the D&D Universe and technically has nothing to with Lovecraft other than his species taking inspiration from it. His name is pronounceable, it's *n*gath*rod*. The n is pronounced like the n in "no" without the o, gath like "wrath" and rod like god.
I shall post one, once I get home.
I have two versions of this deck.
One with mill in it.snd one without but a lot more card draw depending on your meta.
yeah, had to get home first.
this is just a quick one
Do note, thespian stage is there to release my pet card, dark depths, you can take out vampire hexmage, thespian stage and dark depths and replace with something else - if you want more creatures or something else.
Im still waiting for marit lager to pop, but im keeping it in, just so i can get the feeling when a 20/20, indestructable flying horror comes on the field.
To make it the mill deck, you just remove some of the non-mill creatures and add in
a ton of mill cards instead, like \[\[nemesis of reason\]\] \[\[bruvac\]\] etc.
Edit: my mill deck, focused hard on milling oponents, so i didnt have as much card-draw, or that many non-mill creatures.
Nitpicky, but sort of important… just saying for new player clarity.
It’s controls, not owns. If we both own and have a copy of it and both are our commanders, if you take control of mine, both do separate commander damage.
As long as we’re diving down this hole. Commanders that are turned face-down (morph, cybermen, or manifest, somehow) still deal commander damage as well
Yup, that's why people play [[Slicer Hired Muscle]] in cEDH. Passing him around the table starting like turn 1 or 2 people will rack up commander damage from him quiiiiick
Edit: Notably Slicer costs less, can't be sacrificed, and is goaded unlike Tahngarth. If your opponent doesn't attack you can't give them Tahngarth, so you gotta goad their creatures or something, but with Slicer he W keys regardless. He's less likely to get through but way more self-sufficient than Tahngarth
Yep slicer is far superior in terms of power lvl. What I like about Garth is the political aspect; trying to convince/persuade/goad my opponents into attacking each other is a fun challenge.
Mr T! He was one of my favorite decks. Throw in some menace, a splash of some goad, and watch your opponents kill each other with your commander. So savage. He became a huge boogeyman of my pod so he had to go away for a while. But he could easily kill someone within one round of the table.
Want some real Lathril tech that ends games?
[[Fallen Ideal]]
Sac your 1/1s to her before combat, create twice as many when she connects. Usually someone doesn’t have flyers.
Kinda expensive mana-wise, no? You gotta keep paying 3 to replay the aura. I'd rather just pay for a big equipment like [[Colossus Hammer]] at that point and keep my elves.
Nah you just pay the 3 once, it’s an aura you attach to her. After that you just sacrifice elves for 0 mana. You just get the added benefit that if it would go to the GY it goes to your hand instead.
Also [[Colossus Hammer]] is something I’d personally never run in Latrhil. Expensive, no evasion. This makes her huge but gives almost no guarantees she connects. Any 1/1 stops Lathrill from connecting.
I love running \[\[Familiar Ground\]\] and \[\[Goblin War Drums\]\] in the same Gruul+ deck to make everything unblockable. I have this in my \[\[ognis the dragon's lash\]\] its full of haste-y that need to attack to get value.
I feel Familiar Ground gets you more mileage as Lathril, [[Abomination of Llanowar]], and [[Harald, King of Skemfar]] all have Menace. Yes, that isn't Commander Damage, but a big unblockable Elf is still a way to eliminate enemies.
Vorrac Battlehorns is genuinely a pretty underrated card for just how well it lets you rumble, whether it be a voltron commander or a deck full of creatures you want to send smashing in it does shockingly well. Also a common, so it gives a pretty unique effect to anyone building for Pauper EDH.
Bro THANK YOU I run [[Alpha Authority]] in Lathril and was baffled to see how few decks run it in EDHREC. Hexproof+Unblockable on a commander that wants to connect is unvaluable
I hadnt thought about this card, but adding it to [[iroas, god of victory]] right now. It generally swind wide, but theres some big hitters for just in case
Like how dose one read that as a way to stop Iroas?
Is it some convoluted conclusion of the conflicting ablitys of Menice, and only one creature can block?
[[Psychic Paper]] is one of my new favorite equipment cards for decks that need their commander to connect.
Sure, it's equip cost is 1 more but it also comes with Ward 1, which is a lot handier than people give it credit for.
I probably should have as well. I could have saved myself a lot of time and a little money. Now I want to figure out how I can turn this into some funky infinite combo.
[[Canopy Cover]] is such a massively underplayed card in the color. I run it in every single mono green deck that even remotely cares about its commander.
I have both Vorrac battlehorns and [[Gimli’s axe]] in my [[bruenor battlehammer]] Voltron deck haven’t got both out yet but It’ll be hilarious to have a “trample menace can only be blocked by one creature” 12/3 dwarf
I’d have to redo the list I’ve changed the deck a little bit but in general bruenor loves cheap equipment some light defensive equipment such as [[cathar’s shield]] [[swiftoot boots]] you can quickly get lethal commander with [[bladehold war-whip]] and some of just Boros Voltron standards [[steelshapers gift]] [[sigarda’s aid]] [[fighter class]] [[sram]] [[puresteel Paladin]] also you can get away with [[colossus hammer]] being a 1 to cast free equip with bruenor for +12/+10
Canopy Cover is one of the best cards in my Haldan & Pako deck. You want to be swinging with Pako as often as possible, so ways to ensure he gets damage through are great.
I use this strategy in [[Nine-Fingers Keene]] because she has a combat damage based ability and making her unblockable is really good. [[Alpha Authority]] providing Hexproof as well on top of her Ward is fantastic for only 2 mana. There is also [[Familiar Ground]] as a static green enchantments that makes it so all your creatures can only be blocked by one creature each.
Years ago, my friend made a Greven, Predator Captain deck, and as soon as he revealed the deck list, I told him I'd bring a Battlehorns for him to make it unblockable.
I love Battlehorns and wish that I could keep it in the 99 in more decks. It's so efficient for its cost, but it's usually been outpaced by better equipment over the years.
Why not both? This is a 100 card format, you can often have your cake and eat it.
Besides, with all the token decks running rampant through the format, edicts are not what they used to be.
Battle horns is nasty in a voltron deck.
[[Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale]] + [[Vorrac Battlehorns]] + [[Sword of Feast & Famine]] + [[Aggravated Assault]] = GG, what decks should we play next?
Since I included [[Silent Arbiter]] in my [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]] deck, I have come to appreciate these effects. It's an attack deterrent AND menace amplifier... what's not to love?
Generally true.
That said, Trailblazer's Boots backfired for me multiple times in a low power pod. It was kind of my fault. I convinced these new players that basics were usually better than tapped lands. They adjusted thier decks accordingly and I inadvertently set my boots up for failure.
I also recommend \[\[Rogue's Passage\]\] and \[\[Shadowspear\]\]. \[\[Power Matrix\]\] is also good for evasion as well as \[\[Trailblazer's Boots\]\]. If you're in blue, \[\[Winged Boots\]\] gives some evasion and a ward effect. If you're in black, theres \[\[Shizo, Death's Storehouse\]\] and \[\[The Black Gate\]\]. There's also \[\[Hero's Heirloom\]\], \[\[Chariot of Victory\]\] and a few others.
Its kinda nice to not have to rely on having the commander out for some cards in the 99 to be functional. I feel like elf decks have enough synergy that you could easily cut it for more elves or more synergy between elves.
Yeah it's a pretty common combo but in voltron decks it's usually much easier to just get something that straight up gives unblockable or flying, or trample even
Also i just saw that you mentioned lathril, he's generally played as a elf tribal commander and pretty much anything that isn't elf or elf related (or isn't utility, removal, ramp etc) isn't generally ran because you want a high amount of elf stuff and there isn't much room for anything else, and it's much easier to just jam in [[access tunnel]] and [[rogues passage]] since it's 2c and a few colorless lands doesn't hurt much
yes, i have it in my horror deck, because every horror has menace due to my commander \[\[captain n'gathrod\]\] its fun running over someone with \[\[consuming abboration\[\[
Yep, same here. I got one in my captain deck and one in my Lathril deck.
My favorite is guilt feeder with the wombo fear menace
Wombo?
Wombo combo
Mambo?
A little bit of [[Millikin]] in my life

Wow that card is wild
it eats the plains and everything on them . one gulp !
So how do you yall pronounce “N’gathrod” cause I’m saying “ing-guh-thrawd” but just wanna know
We just call him Captain Calamari in our pod, but we have nicknames for a lot of cards tbf
I love this and will be using it in the future!!
That's how I pronounced it at first when I got the precon. Now I pronounce it as "En-gath-rod".
for me the n is silent, so "cap'n gaf rod"
Damn I actually do like this one
N*gga throd. Obviously.
You get it
Nuh gath rod is what my friends and I say
His name said correctly is unpronounceable by humans.
Wait are you joking or serious
Its not explicitly stated, but as he is based on Lovecraftian writing, and Cthulhu and Nyarlothotep and other creations of his are unpronouncable in human languages because they are beings of another plane of existence that the human mind is literally incapable of comprehending, it can be assumed the same rules apply to this good squid boi.
Yeah that’s what I figured the guy I replied to meant, they def give that lovecraft vibe
He is a character from the D&D Universe and technically has nothing to with Lovecraft other than his species taking inspiration from it. His name is pronounceable, it's *n*gath*rod*. The n is pronounced like the n in "no" without the o, gath like "wrath" and rod like god.
Which option is more fun?
It's a reference to Lovecraftian fiction.
I say nuh-GATH-rawd
Davy jones
It’s actually a bummer they didn’t go with that

Greetings fellow Captain N enjoyer!
list ?
I shall post one, once I get home. I have two versions of this deck. One with mill in it.snd one without but a lot more card draw depending on your meta.
Were you still going to post it? I'm curious, I haven't stumbled across this Commander before.

and if your commander is [[tahngarth]], then every source of menace gives you unblockable :)
How does he interact with commander damage? Isn't that tied to the card, not the controller?
That's correct, if the card hits you for a total of 21 combat damage you lose, regardless of who ~~owns~~ controls the card
Nitpicky, but sort of important… just saying for new player clarity. It’s controls, not owns. If we both own and have a copy of it and both are our commanders, if you take control of mine, both do separate commander damage.
Good example of this is partner commanders, have to tally the damage for each commander, rather than combined.
Quick clarification, copies of commanders are not your commander and don't count for commander damage.
As long as we’re diving down this hole. Commanders that are turned face-down (morph, cybermen, or manifest, somehow) still deal commander damage as well
Yeah you're totally right, controls vs owns is an important distinction
Right. Commanderness and commander damage is tied to the physical card. Each physical card is a commander. Each physical card tracks commander damage.
I have a Tangarth deck. You reach the 21 dmg pretty quick
Yup, that's why people play [[Slicer Hired Muscle]] in cEDH. Ahhhh I got it. I misread it as "Sac THIS creature" hmmm that's actually something I need as an instant sac outlet in my lathril aristocrats, thanks!!
Then it wouldn't work. Sacrificing the creature is part of the cost, so it would die before the effect could resolve.
Also [[Colossus Hammer]] is something I’d personally never run in Latrhil. Expensive, no evasion. This makes her huge but gives almost no guarantees she connects. Any 1/1 stops Lathrill from connecting.

Also Equip *ONE*. Wish I'd known about this card earlier
I play Anikthea and use [[Familiar Ground]]
Thank you very much for this.
I second that!

Do you have a Rugrats alter?
No, I never thought about it, until now. So I'm going to have to look that up lol.
Phil and Lil DeVille would be hilarious. Don't mind me. Magic Boomer dating myself.
Oh boy, getting up on the weekends turning on Nickelodeon, not a care in the world. Bring me back please.
I figured a dill Pickles. by himself not gonna do anything, give him a rattle and you will be bonked.
I hadnt thought about this card, but adding it to [[iroas, god of victory]] right now. It generally swind wide, but theres some big hitters for just in case
I love it when people think [[Silent Arbiter]] is the way to stop Iroas then they get commander damaged out by him lol
Like how dose one read that as a way to stop Iroas? Is it some convoluted conclusion of the conflicting ablitys of Menice, and only one creature can block?
Moreso that (at least for my Iroas deck) it stops the go-wide strategy... forgetting that 3 hits from Iroas is all it takes.
Oh, lol far simpler of an explanation than i was thining

I have a Sisay deck that runs Iroas and [[Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist]] and it’s always hilarious explaining the interaction.
[[Psychic Paper]] is one of my new favorite equipment cards for decks that need their commander to connect. Sure, it's equip cost is 1 more but it also comes with Ward 1, which is a lot handier than people give it credit for.
😮 Maybe I should have paid more attention to Doctor Who.
I probably should have as well. I could have saved myself a lot of time and a little money. Now I want to figure out how I can turn this into some funky infinite combo.

Canopy Cover is one of the best cards in my Haldan & Pako deck. You want to be swinging with Pako as often as possible, so ways to ensure he gets damage through are great.
I have [[vorrac battlehorns]] in my [[valduk, keeper of the flame]] deck. They have saved my ass on multiple occasions, really a slept on card.

Silent Arbiter is great with Voltron menace builds, especially if your commander has vigilance too.

Used to run the battle horns in my old Akiri/Toggo landfall deck. Good memories!
You can also use [[familiar ground]] in green. All 3 of these work great in [[Nine-Fingers Keene]]

People swing with commanders that aren't Winota or Najeela?
Why would I want to waste a card on unblockable when I can just force them to sac 2 creatures every turn
Why not both? This is a 100 card format, you can often have your cake and eat it. Besides, with all the token decks running rampant through the format, edicts are not what they used to be.
I use Manabox, and I'm always looking for Commander Staples. Thank you for this. They've been added and noted.
Lathril was one of my first decks and I remember running Alpha Authority. Such a great card in Lathril for sure.

Generally true. That said, Trailblazer's Boots backfired for me multiple times in a low power pod. It was kind of my fault. I convinced these new players that basics were usually better than tapped lands. They adjusted thier decks accordingly and I inadvertently set my boots up for failure.
You did good, too many players underestimate the power of the basic lands, and how ahead of many non-basic lands they are.
I run those cards, or actively searching for them, they are really good for Lathril.

Surprised nobody in this thread has mentioned my boy [[Yuan Shao]], which also makes creatures with menace unblockable.
